Passing info from MetaPost to TeX

Dear all, is it possible to pass data from MetaPost back to TeX? This would be similar in spirit to, say, the MetaPost variable BodyFontSize that contains data from the TeX surrounding. Just the other way round. Best, Oliver Buerschaper

I hate to pick up on this again, but... The basic Palatino, together with protrusion and small caps is causing issues. Essentially horizontal placing of the characters fails (see previous PDF). In the example below, I can reliably cause the effect by commenting out (or not) the line with the \sc. This effect shows up the my "real" files. While trying to find the trigger by culling down the files, for a moment I could reliably (!) turn the effect on and off with the line %\setupfootertexts[chapter][pagenumber] and not changing the \sc lines. Weird side effect? Sorry, I can't reproduce that one anymore. One way to reduce, but not prevent the effect, is if more plain text is output before using \sc. eg by adding an \input tufte beforehand. But once the text after the \sc is a bit longer ie. 10x tufte the effect will show again. Gut feeling: successive and cumulative rounding errors. Question: Am I tripping over "side effects"? Is using SmallCaps a bad idea when using protrusion? It just feels odd that something like this would be so uncontrollable. Particularly since the palatino font is from the TexGyre set (so close to home) Thanks for thoughts! complicated layout - impostion

Hallo, I need to create a document with complicated layout. four A6 pages on one side of A4 sheet (two upper ones with bottom up) two A5 landscape pages on back side of A4 sheet (upper one with bottom up) How can I reach this in Context please? \setuppapersize[A6][A4] \setuparranging[2*4] This code works fine for A6 pages, but I'm not sure how to include also A5 landscape pages. Expansion and database module

Hello all, My big weakness in TeX practice is working with the expansion. Perhaps because he speaks so Lua. I would like to ask whether there is any possibility of printing table columns (throw Mojca database module) when the column data are contained in a separate macro. how to jump to figure and return to the original postion?

Dear all, In the presentation, I'd like to jump to a figure and return to the original position. For that purpose, I set a label for a figure like \placefigure[][fig:test]... and put \goto{figure}[fig:test] It works fine. It generates a ling to the figure so I click it, I can move to the figure. But I don't know how to come back. I tried similarly. Set a label like \item[start] ... and \goto{return}[start] It also displays "return" in changed color but the link is not working. Minimals Beta on Windows 64bit

Since one of the last Betas mtxrun seems to be aware of 64bit windows, but all the stubs and scripts seem to be missing support for that resulting in the whole setup to not work at all. First-setup fails with stuff like that: MTXrun | run: rsync -rpztlv --stats contextgarden.net::'minimals/current/bin/common/mswin/ minimals/current/bin/context/mswin/ minimals/current/bin/metapost/mswin/ minimals/current/bin/man/ minimals/current/bin/luatex/mswin/ minimals/current/bin/xetex/mswin/ minimals/current/bin/luatex/mswin/ minimals/current/bin/luatex/mswin/ minimals/current/bin/pdftex/mswin/' 'c:/context/tex/texmf-mswin'The source and destination cannot both be remote. rsync error: syntax or usage error (code 1) at main.c(1127) [receiver=3.0.2] Easy fix: in mtx-update.lua, line 294 the current check is if osplatform == "windows" or osplatform == "mswin" then which should also check for "mswin-64". But even after fixing that, mtxrun fails at several points, because it tries to run further commands from "tex/texmf-mswin-64". Another easy fix: add a hardlink/junction for that directory. But that only ended in the following error whenever I invoke mtxrun, texlua, etc.: "texlua.exe - Application Error The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000022). click OK to close the application." I don't know why that was changed, but afaik all 64bit versions of windows support 32bit too so I would vote to leave it as it was before - just deal with mswin-64 as if it was mswin. Hallo ConTeXtist, Thanx to Hans for his advice. I further experimented with Mojca database module. I want get interaction database module with my lua application which process CSV files otherwise. My application can list arbitrary fields from any CSV file namely in completely arbitrary format i.e. in rows format: field11, field13, field15, ... etc... field21, field23, field25, ... etc... field31, field33, field35, ... etc... this is one of reasons why I want use Mojca database module. Meanwhile, I too can not run it. Problem is, perhaps, that I can not work properly with the expansion. Perhaps I can get progressively. Here are some insights to the functioning of the previous examples. \usemodule[database] \defineseparatedlist [NaturalTable] [separator=comma, before=\bTABLE,after=\eTABLE, first=\bTR,last=\eTR, left=\bTD,right=\eTD] \starttext 1. using \definebodyfont with multiple size declarations -- Why?

As someone new to Context, I am trying to get to grips with font handling. Reading through a fair amount of documentation it is not always to clear to me what recommended practice in todays Luatex/MKIV enviroment is. My setup is "Minimals" updated 26.7.2010 (luatex 0.60.2, MTXrun 2010.07.22) setup on Mac OS X 10.6.4. I use it to produce documents I need in a language teaching environment. As I am starting of without legacy documents, there is no need for MKII or any other type of Tex. Confusing for me is the use of "\definebodyfont" in typescripts. I read in "co-fonts.pdf" (no release date, internal creation date 18/11/2009): "because Latin Modern comes in design sizes, there was a need to associate a specific font with each bodyfont size. You may find yourself in a similar situation when you attempt to create a typescript for a ‘professional' commercial font set." Looking at the example: \definebodyfont [10pt,11pt,12pt] [rm] [tfe=Serif at 48pt, ite=SerifItalic at 48pt] \tfe Big {\it Words}. What I simply don't understand is the need for multiple font size declarations. I can (kind of) see that it might be necessary (looking at typescripts), if the whole typescript resolves to "design sizes" where each point size is a single font file. But for ttf/otf fonts, ie. where the font is scaled? This minimal example, including a "special" font (TitleFont) works (almost) fine for me. % the only two statements to declare the fonts I want to use \usetypescriptfile[type-otf] % being default, I could even miss this declaration \setupbodyfont[pagella,10pt] \definefont [WonderFont] [BoldItalic sa 4.8] \starttext {\WonderFont The Big Title} \input aesop-de \stoptext I do get one consistant error (the "5pt" can vary depending on the size I give in "setupbodyfont"): {/Users/martin/contextMini/tex/texmf-context/fonts/map/pdftex/context/mkiv-px.map} virtual math > the mapping is incomplete for 'pxmath' at 5pt Though, the document looks fine. Does the error hint I am missing something? What is "good practice" in Luatex/MKIV to access the desired fonts? My questions: - when do I need to use the multiple point sizes at all in a Luatex/MKIV environment? - when would I need to provide that information in typescript files I need to create? (simplefonts is very slow to load fonts with phonetic symbols) Any tips to help my understanding would be appreciated!

figures after columns

hello all: I want to add a figure after a balanced \startcolumns ... \stopcolumns. When the last page uses less than aprox half a page, the figure appears after the text ends, but if the page uses about half a page o more, the figure jumps to the next page. Consider the following code: \setuphead[section][style={\tfd}] \starttext \section{bla bla} \dorecurse{4}{\input tufte} This is just some text that shows what happens. \section{bla bla bla} \input tufte \stoptext In MkII, "This is just some text that shows what happens." goes on the first page (which makes sense), while in MkIV it goes on second just before section name. Itemize behaves in similar way, if it is used just before section, last item in the itemization list goes on second page. A bug? -- Vedran Miletić

width of definetextbackground

Hallo, I am wondering if there is an option in \definetextbackground to get the output over the entire width of a page? I mean to go over the width of the \textwidth (for example like \setlayout[width=\textwidth+\outermargintotal])? I played with \setuplayout before calling textbackground, but it did not work perfectly since the layout of the text after \definetextbackground was changed as well; \setuplayout[reset] before stopping the textbackground did not help. I read the solutions proposed by Aditya but they did not help. Have you any ideas how to get it? Armin

new beta

Hi, I uploaded a new beta that can deal with the new mplib. The biggest side effect of the new lib is that no longer formats are made and that the 'format related code' (read: metafun) is loaded at runtime. In the future I might optimize this but at the moment it's not needed. For a while both methods will be supported. The latest version of mplib can process the metafun manual without crashing or hanging which is a good sign. Minimals without rsync - again?

Hi all, On the wiki at http://wiki.contextgarden.net/ConTeXt_Minimals/FAQ is says: "Blocked Firewall port You are most probably behind a firewall. Make sure that port 873 is open. If you cannot make any changes yourself and if your admin objects, you probably won't be able to use rsync for the distribution." Yes, I am behind a firewall. No, port 873 is not open. No, I cannot make any changes, and yes, my admin objects :-( So what's the alternative to using rsync? I used to use the zip file at http://www.pragma-ade.com/download-4.htm but that doesn't exist any more! I've now managed to screw up my MKIV installation somehow, so I desperately need some way of getting the beta release re-installed without rsync. Help!! Richard Converteam UK Ltd. Hello all, What is the recommended method for creating multi-line labels in MetaPost in MKIV, please? Semantic data in ConTeXt?

Hullo, this is something that's been bothering me for quite a while: Will ConTeXt support semantic meta-information? A few examples: * could ConTeXt automatically tag the PDF it creates e.g. via Nepomuk[1]? * could the bibliography be enriched with RDF triples? * by selecting an event or contact mentioned in a document made by ConTeXt, could you import that into your organiser or address book? * if a document made by ConTeXt was put online, could meta-data inside it reveal the semantic meaning of its contents and creator for easier searching? * ditto for local storage? From my understanding this depends on whether PDF can have RDF included and/or whether ConTeXt could output to ODF. Currently KOffice is leading the pace here with OOo just a bit behind it and AbiWord still needing to catch up. There's an interesting article[2] in Linux Magazine about how KOffice uses libferris to integrate RDF into ODF. With semantic web and semantic desktop creeping up at a fast pace, it'd be a pity not to make use of it IMHO. Setting up protrusion, side-effects

When setting up protrusion, I noticed it "disappearing" despite being defined/setup. In a text, when I changed the font from Palatino to Sabon (with \setupbodyfont[sabon]), protrusion stopped working. Changing back to palatino, with nothing else changed, protrusion appeared again. Note: getting the latest minimals update did not change anything: context: version: 2010.07.27 16:30, LuaTeX, Version beta-0.60.2-2010070117 on OSX 10.6.4 The following test file showed that if the \setupbodyfont takes place before \definefontfeature and \setupalign, protrusion fails completely. In the example 1 below it fails. Disabling the top \setupbodyfont and enabling the bottom \setupbodyfont gets it to work. However, it will fail for both Palatino and Sabon! I could not create an example for one font working and the other not. Is the order of declaration important? That would be unusual in context by what I have seen so far. Am I missing something? This release supports tagged pdf, but it will go unnoticed if you don't have full acrobat. Tagging is enabled with: \setupstructure[state=start] Normally tagging takes place automatically but you can add your own using \startelement[whatever] ... \stopelement and labels can be changed with \setuptaglabeltext [en] [elementname=yourfavourite]. I have a comment on the name of macro "\xmldoiftext". The name as is, seems specifically to point to something like: <node>some_text</node> Luckily the manual mentions here "when .. node has some content" and this implies the {yes}-branch will be taken also in case of the presence of subnodes, even if these lack text content: <node><subnode/></node> I am happy to find that this is indeed the behaviour, because it is what I need. Thus I am inclined to consider "\xmldoifcontent" as a better descriptive name instead of "\xmldoiftext". Or is it already too late to change its name? Hans van der Meer

slightly OT: tablets

Hi all, this is slightly OT, but maybe someone here has a helpful suggestion: since the announcement of Apple's iPad, tablets have become the rage. I am somewhat underwhelmed by this type of computer, but I see one area where it might be interesting to have one of those babies, and that's presentations. What I'm dreaming about: a tablet that would be able to show my manuscript (of course, a pdf produced with ConTeXt) on it's own screen and drive a presentation (again, pdf) on an external screen/digital projector. That way, I would need only one technical device, no paper etc. for my presentations. I even called Apple, but they said there is no app yet for doing this on an iPad. Do any of you have any insights: is there anything on the market yet that would make this possible? Is it at all feasible? Does it sound like a reasonable idea? All best Thomas

Hi all, what would be an elegant way to make out the current interpreter from inside lua? For now I'm branching things at the top of the script like this: ···8<·········································································· if arg[-1] == "texlua" then utf=unicode.utf8 else require "lpeg" utf=string end ···8<·········································································· because I have neither slnunicode nor a built-in lpeg on my system's lua installation. The problem is that luatex has arg[-1] == nil but arg[0] == "luatex", and context sets all args to nil, so my crude way of determining the interpreter by cl args fails with both. I tried something like "local string = utf or string" as well, but this works only in context which has utf==unicode.utf8 or something. Hi, given you have a context project with a preface in frontmatter: In the printed "table of contents" you don't want the preface be listed. But in the PDF bookmark the preface should be listed and the table of contents, too. How to achieve this?? Steffen

Publishing matlab figures

Hello, I'm used to use LaTeX for scientific publishing mainly because many conferences offers an article template in this language. I'd like to use Context to typeset my thesis, but I miss one important feature from LaTeX. Psfrag package can be used to replace selected marks in an eps figure (generated by Matlab) with a text typesets with TeX engine. There is also an alternative package which converts thess psfragged figures to pdf and full work can be processed by pdftex. Is there any similar way how to do this in Context? It would really help me. Hi, there was an earlier issue with \underbar{b} http://archive.contextgarden.net/message/20091109.094902.baf77ffc.en.html which seems somewhat related to my problem. When providing only one character as argument to \underbar or \overbar and a following space (or paragraph ending) the line is also under/over that space. Is this intended? Example: \starttext \underbar{b} \overbar{b} \underbar{b} $\underbar{b} = \overbar{b} = \underbar{b}$ \stoptext A fix for this would be to use \underbars{b} or \overbars{b} instead, btw. The GUI installer progresses, downloads a few files via the command terminal and rsync but then I get a couple of dialog boxes with Make failed and Update failed. Using stylistic sets in math

In XITS I have stylistic sets (ss01-07) for accessing additional alphabets not bresent in Unicode, or variants of exising ones. Return value of context call

Hi, when there's a mistake in the context code then the context call returns »1«. When there's a mistake in the metapost code then the context call returns »0«. This is annoying for me, since I use the return value as indicator for my pdf reader to refresh. This seems like a bug to me. Is there a workaround? Best regards Marco

Dear all, I'd like to draw boxes with a label in a certain rule. I define drawbox macro for it. It receives 3 numbers, (the height of box, x position, y position). I'd like to label the height of the box in the middle of the box. I tired label( h ,(3s*u+u, t*u + h*u/2)); %h is a received numeral. But it is not working. If I change h to "letter" in label command, it is working. So, I'd like to know how to put received numeral(the height of the box) as a label. Or, how to change the value of a variable to a string. Hi, I ran into a case where a natural table has an issue when it contains inline math and an alignment character is used. Here's a small example which triggers the problem: \starttext< \bTABLE< \bTABLEbody< \bTR< \bTD[alignmentcharacter={.},aligncharacter=yes]{\le 4.0\math{-}}\eTD< \eTR< \eTABLEbody< \eTABLE< \stoptext< However, if I replace \math{-} with $-$, the file works. My main question is: how do I sort strings using the built-in sorting rules for the current language? Example ConTeXt document: PS output

I've just installed ConTeXt "minimal" and had a look at "ConTeXt, The Manual". I typed in the example document that starts at the bottom of page 13 (called it eg.tex) and ran context. It produced the file eg.pdf and I notice that it ran luatex with the option "--backend=pdf". Thanks, those who have done massive amounts of advanced work on ConTeXt and luatex, huge projects which are costing me nothing. But, I have a problem. I have a PostScript printer. I'd prefer not to have to run pdf2ps. How can ps output be produced directly? "context --backend=ps eg" doesn't do it and there is nothing about --backend or other options in the index, of "ConTeXt, The Manual", as far as I can see. There's no Reference/en/backend on the wiki.

horizontal alignment

Hi everyone, I'm trying to do some horizontal alignment, for typesetting poetry. There are lines that are continuations of the previous line, and should be aligned to the end of that previous line. Currently, I'm doing this by using \phantom text, which for some reason I also have to wrap into an \mbox to avoid a line break. As an example: \startlines here we now see you ~~ already in grief as you see ~~ yourselves ~~ as the last of the lasts we are mirrors of your consciousness \mbox{\phantom{we are mirrors of your consciousness} as you see the end} and you see us ~~ deep in the spring of the universe seeing you deep ~~ in the gravity well of the heat death we are dying ~~ in the spring as we watch you die we are grieving in the spring as you begin to grieve for all we are talking about bone-dry at the bottom of the well of time we are already parched \mbox{\phantom{we are already parched} for time is transparent} and we are all rats in the glassy \mbox{\phantom{and we are all rats in the glassy} labyrinth of time. \stoplines How would you solve this kind of problem? I've considered defining a macro \BrokenLine[line1][line2] that does the above. But, there are also instances where there are two or more lines as a continuation of one previous line. Maybe there is a possibility to mark a horizontal position temporarily, and then jump to that position later? Thanks, Michael

Hi, I made some modifications to lang-sla.tex that improve support for Croatian language (quotes, quotations and translations). Hope this can be included in ConTeXt. m-barcodes error

I can’t get the example in the m-barcodes module to work. I have no urgent need to print barcodes; I was just curious. I'm writing in case I found an easily corrected bug. The release notes from 2010.05.08 call this module mkiv only. But according to the log, the file m-pstricks.mkii is used. Installing Context Minimals on Windows

Hi, I normally use linux, but I now need to install context on Windows (7). Right now the minimals installation fails for me in various ways, depending on how I do it. Running the graphical installer I get two dialogs "update failed error code 1" and "make failed error code 1". Using the command line method I get a message about a vtable error when I try to run context. (It looked like the one mentioned in earlier postings, sorry I don't have the exact message now). I want just MKIV + extras (and intend to try TexWorks). Any hints appreciated. Thanks, -- John Devereux

Best version of ConTeXt

What would be the best version of ConTeXt to recommend to a friend who writes novels on a PC running Windows? The person has no programming skills. He would probably require some assistance installing Tex-Live or whatever and would need a stable version because he couldn't manage frequent updates. writetolist causes mystery blank

Hi all, I'm having a but of a problem using writetolist. In principle, I want to insert something into the table of contents, but I don't want to disturb the flow of the text. Unfortunately, the following code seems to generate a blank at the top of the page: \showframe \showmakeup \starttext \writetolist[section]{}{}% \framed{This box has been pushed down} \stoptext I've also tried using a section command where the output has been set to empty: \showframe \showmakeup \setuphead[section][ before=, after=, command=\mydonothing] \def\mydonothing#1#2{} \starttext \section{}% \framed{This box has been pushed down} \stoptext but that also gets me a blank. Incidentally, the same thing happens with writebetweenlist, (except that this seems to sometimes push content onto a new page for some reason). Any ideas? -- Michael Murphy

context vs texinfo

Hi, I was using context and I had to wait for 16 seconds for one run approximately. I switched to texinfo and it barely takes 2 seconds. Can you please explain the diffrence? I know context is complex but still? -- Best regards, Shiv Shankar Dayal

\definecolumnsethsize

I'm using columnsets for a paper with 2 columns and copied an examples from the wiki and the columnsets documentation to give the following commands: \definecolumnset[colset][n=2] \setupcolumnset[colset][2][distance=5mm] \definecolumnsethsize{colset}{1}{1}\One \definecolumnsethsize{colset}{1}{2}\Two ... \placefigure[btlr][fig:ex1]{caption1}{\externalfigure[example1][width=\One]} % One column figure \placefigure[btlr][fig:ex2]{caption1}{\externalfigure[example2][width=\Two]} % Two column figure The figures appear okay, but they are quite a bit smaller than the textwidth of the columns. Can someone explain the workings of \definecolumnsethsize? I've looked at the code and it means nothing to me! The columnsets document only gives examples, no definition. After completing the installation and when I run "texexec.exe" I get the following error: mtxrun:9289: attempt to concatenate local 'v' (a table value) What is the problem? and how to solve it?
