ConTeXt Minimals: `luatools --selfupdate` does not work.

Dear ConTeXt folks, I installed ConTeXt minimals and tried to run luatools --selfupdate as documented in the Wiki [1]. It looks like, the option is not supported anymore, since the output looks like a list of supported options. Presentation Styles: `texexec --pdf --mode=demo s-pre-xx` still valid?

TABLE border width for row

Hello, is it possible to increase border width of single row (or column) without affecting "inner" (between cell) borders using TABLE macro? Hi all, First I admit that I've never understood the typescript part of ConTeXt... I've been using the following recipe for boldmath. Postscript Type1 fonts & MK IV

I'd like to get some Postscript Type1 fonts working with MK IV (installed via the minimals under Linux). I placed the *.pfb fonts in ~/.fonts and did: mtxrun --script fonts --reload mtxrun --script fonts --list --all --pattern=* ...but the output doesn't show any of the *.pfb fonts. The *.ttf fonts installed alongside them in ~/.fonts do show up, and I can create PDFs with those ttf fonts using the `context` command, but I'm not sure how to proceed with the Postscript fonts. Hi all, Today I started preparations for my activities at the ConTeXt meeting. There are two small lua tutorials in the program, and I am looking for input on both. There is one that is supposed to be a general beginner's introduction, and one specifically about fonts. For both, I am looking for input on what subjects I should cover? Since both tutorials will end up as articles/wiki pages, it makes sense to ask everybody on the list for input (but requests by actual attendees will be scored considerably higher). Centered framed text in two columns

Hi everyone, I have three questions regarding the use of abbreviations in mkiv: it seems that there is a difference between the way in which mkii and mkiv treat the definitions of synonyms. questions regarding `\date`

Dear ConTeXt folks, I have four questions regarding `\date`. I looked at the page in the Wiki [1], in the ConTeXt user manual on page 159 [2][3] and tried some things, but could not figure it out. I am using Debian Sid/unstable and I am a total beginner regarding ConTeXt. 0. I guess the first question is, if `\date` is supposed to be used inside a text anyway or just when for example setting the title page. 1. No space is inserted after using `\date[…]`. text \date[d=29,m=8,y=2099] text result: text 29. August 2099text Is that intentional? A slash after the command fixes it. text \date[d=29,m=8,y=2099]\ text 2. I do not want that one digit months have the zero displayed. But using `m` acts as using `month`. \date[d=29,m=8,y=2099][d,.\,,m] result: 29. August 3. Spacing between numbers. Using LaTeX there were some suggestions to typeset a date using small spaces like `29.\,8.\,2010`. I guess this depends on the fonts used and personal taste? If there is a rule, maybe that could be added to the typesetting chapter in the user manual. PDF fields

Hi all, please have a look at my attached example. I've two problems. 1) After I fill one field in the PDF-file all other fields inherit the text. MKIV and path updated by Mktexlsr...

Hello list, I do not know why, but somehow ConTeXt MKIV stopped (in texlive 2010) look up the my .tex files (my libraries) that I placed to c:/texlive/texmf-local/tex/... etc. .. While MKII works fine. Is Mktexlsr command for MKIV without effect? Knows anyone what may be the problem and how to fix it?? Thanks Jaroslav

parsing custom syntax in lua

Hello, What is the best way to pass verbatim text to lua for processing? I would like to write a lua parser for non-TeX text with a custom syntax (could be something like Markdown for instance). The interface would be \startMyFormat % custom syntax % \stopMyFormat \processMyFormatfile[external file.custom] % alternative The text between \startMyFormat and \stopMyFormat or the text read from the external file should be passed as one utf8-encoded string to a lua function. Any ideas on how to write these macros? On a side note, does anyone know of a quick way to strip diacritical marks from utf8-encoded strings in lua (i.e., transform them to pure ascii)? If I should sent each patch as a separate message, please tell me. I was not able to get a PDF created with my Debian Sid/unstable system, so I could not test my changes. $ texexec correspondence.tex […] ! Undefined control sequence. l.139 \doifolderversionelse \contextversion{\currentmoduleparameter\c!context... I hope this is the right way to contact the authors and to submit the patches. If not, please tell me the preferred way. As a last remark, I would really love to see the sources and documentation of modules under SCM so contributing would be easier. Dear list, I'm trying to find the command (in manual, wiki or mailing list) that enables using background behind text spanning over multiple pages. At the moment I have \startframedtext [width=\textwidth, background=color, backgroundcolor=mycolor1, frame=off, leftframe=on, framecolor=mycolor2] but I remember that there used to be a command that allowed doing the same, but spanning the text over multiple pages. I would be grateful for any hint/pointer to the manual. I've found a document that does underlining of words in paragraphs, but this seems like an easier problem anyway. Thank you very much, Mojca

I want to try to make a logo. When executing: texexec ConTeXtWikiLogo there is generated: -rw-r--r-- 1 cecil users 17K aug 28 12:55 ConTeXtWikiLogo.pdf When I give: cp ConTeXtWikiLogo.tex BASHLogo.tex texexec BASHLogo there is generated: -rw-r--r-- 1 cecil users 1,3K aug 28 12:57 BASHLogo.pdf which is a completely wrong file. Hi Hans, In scrp-cjk.lua, the function "process" can eat some glue node between CJK glyphs. But the following glue nodes between CJK glyph and half_width_open/half_width_close glyphs should not be eaten. For example: \starttext 中国 (Chinese) 的未来 \stoptext Its output need stay the same. Therefore I think the function "process" need add some codes for the test of half_width_open/half_width_close glyphs. fonts on ubuntu in ~/.fonts directory are not recognised

Hi, the command 'mtxrun --script fonts --reload' does not find fonts in /home/me/.fonts directory on ubuntu, or any system fonts for that matter. Consequently the fonts installed there are not used. The output is like below. \bf disturbs flowing of text around image

In the example below (just updated minimals too) the \bf in the second paragraph prevents the text flowing around the picture, the text runs over the picture. Take \bf out and all is fine. If I use an \input statement instead of the lorem text the effect does not show. The image name is deliberate -- it does not exist on my system. What's going on? How to cause the text to flow around again? creating own hyperlinks in bibliography

Dear Taco, I would like to add some additional fields to bibliography. I know that I have already asked the same question twice (for url and doi) and each time it has been built into the core functionality, while my current request is "too local" to do that. I would like to have \newbibfield[cobissid] \startpublication [...] ... \cobissid{70615} \stoppublication and then I would modify \setuppublicationlayout[book] to transform the number written above into "cobiss.si-id: 70615" pointing to the following URL: http://www.cobiss.si/scripts/cobiss?command=DISPLAY&base=cobib&rid=70615&la… That is very similar to what DOI does at the moment, but while DOI is quite international, COBISS ID is really local, but it is *the* system used in the whole country. problem with mpost/metafun/MKII/MKIV???

Hello Members, I have a problem with texlive 2009. In the version 2007, I made some file with "decorations", made by metapost.Then you got a list of numbered -mpgraph files. In the version 2009, I don't getns these files and my .pdf files are without the "decorations". With "decorations" I mean blocks around pieces of text, witin a lecture note. Also the first page is white, till it was first green with some figures on it. While texexec works, I see mpgraph files but only numbered by .1, in the 2007 version it started by 4000 and it went to almost 3650. I see also that there is made use of MKIV instead of MKII in the 2007 version. What to do such that the 2009 version, gives the same result as the 2007 version. I installed the 2009 version of the TUG side with tlmgr and almost everything of texlive is installed. Only most of the languages are not installed, further everything, greetings, Rene'

Hello, When - creating the file test.tex: \starttext \setupexternalfigures[directory={./arranging}] \externalfigure[2*8][page=2] \stoptext - creating a sub-directory "arranging" - putting into this directory the file http://foundry.supelec.fr/svn/contextman/context-reference/en/arranging/2*8… - running "context test" then the run stops with this error: !LuaTeX error: PDF inclusion: required page <2> does not exist ==> Fatal error occurred, no output PDF file produced! ConTeXt Minimals and TEXMFCACHE

Hi, according to the wiki “ConTeXt minimals does not touch anything outside its installation folder”, but if TEXMFCACHE is not set by setuptex, actually many files may be written outside the ConTeXt minimals folder, and (as in my case) they may conflict with the files written by ConTeXt from TeX Live in the same cache folder. Is there any reason why exporting TEXMFCACHE is commented out in setuptex? Nicola

font sizes not obeyed

Dear list, yes, I do understand that it is somehow polite to use some kind of \definebodyfontenvironment for weird font sizes (but don't understand why this is needed), but the following example somehow works in MKII and produces really weird result in MKIV: \starttext Title \switchtobodyfont[5pt] Title \switchtobodyfont[10pt] Title \switchtobodyfont[14pt] Title \switchtobodyfont[15pt] Title \switchtobodyfont[50pt] Title \stoptext Is there any tiny patch for the core to fix such weird behaviour or is it forbidden to switch to font sizes in this way? I am having trouble working out a solution for spanning some rows of tables. The instructions at http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Table got me so far as the example shows. The example is a timetable excerpt. So I want horizontal lines everywhere, except on Mo, Di, Mi (Monday Tuesday Wednesday) where there are double periods. Adding any more \DLs or \VLs results in not being able to translate the file or other errors. Currently the horizontal lines are not where they should be (now on Mo, Mi, Fr) but kind of evenly spread. Lastly: How do I control row height? thanks! Hi! Is it possible to get the value of a MetaPost variable from TeX? It can, e.g., add "show u;" to MetaPost input, then parse output. I want to pretty- print the values of some MetaPost variables. hoffset and voffset have no effect

Hi everyone, I cannot see any effect when using voffset and hoffset as a parameter for \startstandardmakeup. For example: \startstandardmakeup[headerstate=none, footerstate=none, hoffset=1in, hoffset=1in, width=4in, height=7.0in] ... \stopstandardmakeup I'd expect them to shift the page content up and to the right, respectively. This is guessing from their name: I actually cannot find any documentation on these parameters. Am I missing something? Thanks, Michael

Trouble with percent character in ConTeXt text (programm code typing)

Hello all... I am converting any manual from HTML to ConTeXt. There are a lot of programm code. and in the code is very often % character. Ther is no problem in \startyping - \stoptyping environment, but I need using this in text ... for example The sequence \type{%0} stands for the whole match. The sequence \type{%%} stands for a single~\type{%}. or For instance, the call \type{string.format('%q', 'a string with "quotes" and \n new line')} will produce the string: ... etc.. 1. It is clear that this can not work, but is there any satisfactory solution?? Something like \startypingintext ... \stoptypingintext i.e. intext typing environment.. 2. in html code is often emphasis found inside the program code for example: <code>\<em>ddd</em></code>, Maybe it's a dumb question, but may be inside emphasis inside verbatim (\startyping - \stoptyping) environment?? Virtual math

I'd like to take an existing math font, say Latin Modern, and replace certain glyphs by their corresponding ones from an OpenType font, say Minion Pro. Mysterious space in first table column

I am trying to typeset a simple table with very tight spacing. The first column of the table is wider than the others with a mysterious amount of extra space added on the left. You can reproduce this with a simple example: \starttext \starttable[|s1l|l|l|l|l|l|l|l|l|] \HL \VL4\NC 1\NC 7\VL\AR \VL6\NC 3\NC 2\VL\AR \VL9\NC 5\NC 8\VL\LR \HL \HL \stoptable \stoptext I assume the problem is that I don't understand the "s1" declaring the amount of space for the cells. Reading through the docs (which have examples of tables but not a lot of introductory material), I haven't been able to find a way to remove the extra left-hand space while leaving the spacing of the remaining cells the same. --- Also a quick note, I have spent the last month converting to ConTeXt from my previous background in LaTeX and have really been amazed. I'm currently typesetting a new journal, aimed at computer programmers ( http://codequarterly.com/) and I was very quickly able to get my otf fonts working, format complicated documents, and create reusable named styles. If we're happy users of ConTeXt, what is the best way to give back to the community? Blog posts talking about it? Documentation? Conferences? Thanks, Adam Solove

varying headers, footers, page numbers

Hi, I'm trying to create a book where the front matter has no headers/footers, except roman numeral page numbers at the top outside of the page. The main matter should have Arabic numeral page numbers (restarting with '1') at the top outside of each page, plus the name of the book in the header of each even page and the name of the chapter in the header of each odd page, with no footer. However, on the pages where a new chapter starts (which is set to always be an odd page), there should be no header, and the page number should appear centered at the bottom of the page. I'm quite confused about how to achieve this in ConTeXt. An excerpt from the project structure is ./env.tex ./project.tex ./book/book.tex ./book/chapters/chapter1.tex The following is a shortened excerpt from book.tex: \startfrontmatter \setuppagenumbering[state=stop] % nothing for now, should be roman page % numbers later \component book/frontmatter % ToC ... \stopfrontmatter \startbodymatter \setuppagenumber[number=1] \setupheadertexts [{Name of Chapter}] [{}] [{}] [{Name of Book}] \setuppagenumbering[ alternative=doublesided, % mirrored even/odd pages location={header,margin}, style=small] \component vol04_1/articles/azimov \stopbodymatter This leads to my first question: I generally try to keep all formatting definitions in env.tex. However, it seems to me that since I want to have different settings in the frontmatter compared to the mainmatter, I need to put the \setuppagenumbering and \setupheadertexts in book.tex, which slightly bothers me. The way I intuitively feel it should work is that I would define various headertexts and pagenumberings under some label in env.tex, and then activate the different configurations in book.tex via that label. Is there anything in ConTeXt that I may have overlooked that makes something like that (centrally defining several alternative header/footer/pagenumber configurations) possible? Next, the problem of having a different header/footer/pagenumber on pages where a new chapter starts. In env.tex, I have \setuphead[chapter][ page=mychapterpagebreak, number=no, alternative=c, align={center, nothyphenated, verytolerant}, style={\switchtobodyfont[16pt]}, header=high, footer=none, ] This causes the chapter pages to have no header/footer/pagenumber at all, which is halfway what I want. But actually, I don't really understands why that works either. My understanding is that "header=high" means there should be no header on the first page and the normal header on all subsequent pages. The way I've set it up though, the page number is not really part of the header (it's separately set up through \setuppagenumbering). So why does the page number disappear as well? And, of course, the main question: How do I get the page number centered in the bottom of that page? Again, I feel if there was some way to define different configurations for the header/footer/pagenumbers under different labels, e.g. a label 'chapterfooter', it would then make sense to do something like 'footer=chapterfooter', instead of 'footer=none'. But I guess that's not the way it works -- so how *does* it work? Thanks, Michael

Hi, I've been trying to troubleshoot a problem with TeX labels I ran into the other day... finally I discovered that 1. MkIV (textext) includes TeX material as one single chunk apparently while MkII (btex ... etex) used to include a decomposable picture and that 2. the anchor point is completely different! Is there any way to restore both the "individual addressing" of glyphs and the MkII anchor point in MkIV? This would be crucial for a customized labelling macro... Best, Oliver P.S. Hi! In tikz I can say \draw[help lines] (0, 0) circle (1cm); and setup what does "help lines" mean (color, linewidth etc.) in the environment file with \tikzset{help lines/.style={...}}. hello all I have a 2 column A4 document, each 71,5mm wide. text is CMR 9pt. there is a paragraph 12 lines long. the 12th are the 3 last letters from the word "procesos", or "sos". I really need that 3 letters go up. I need 11 lines. they are just 3 characters in 11 lines. a single syllable. \looseness=-1 is not enough. I also tried inserting discretional hyphens where they can be more usefull, some times helps me but not now. How can I FORCE spacing bettween characters, words (or both). I don't care if it looks too tight. I know that this can seems sacrilegious, but nobody will notice it! thankyou in advance for you generous people. --------------------Horacio Suarez

Summary of user wishes for streams

Hi, We have rather few suggestions and they are not coming anymore. So I am summarizing what we have so far. Since my typesetting vocabulary is meager I choose to present it graphically. Then again my apologies for poor graphics as I did not attempt it in metapost. Below is the collection of the posts and attached is a pdf of a drawing generated in inkscape. A simple case is a translation of the same text running on opposite page while the original runs on left/right page. In my thesis these are not translations, but correlated texts written for different audiences. (think of levels in a CG game) So the texts need to be designed differently. To extrapolate this facility, if columns on one page can run such parallel texts then we can have multiple translations running together. Khaled:Old Arabic book, essentially all early Bulaq Press books used to typesettwo books in one, one is the main book running on the body of the page,while the other is a loosely related book running in the margins of thepage, the second book can be a commentary on the main book, but oftenthey just discuss the same subject with no direct correlation (not acritical edition). I'd like to be able to reproduce such layout. Hi, I need to get the current *section/chapter title and number. I figured out that \fullstructureheadnumber gives the current number. But I can not figure out what gives the current head title. In strc-sec.mkiv I found this comment: \def\currentheadtext {obsolete, use marks} Is this a hint to use getmarking? I tried \getmarking[current] \getmarking[currentsection] \getmarking[currenthead] without success. Does anyone know how to access the current title?

Issues with MetaPost boxes

Since some weeks I have strange problems with MetaPost in MKIV (beta). The attached example should (and did in the past) output a central box ("Fakt") surrounded by five boxes named "Dimension". However some of them (in that particular example one) is drawn wrong: the box is on the right spot, but the label seems to be at 0,0. It seems to happen whenever the boxes are drawn from within a loop - at least all of my problems with boxes show similar symptoms and only occur within loops. Any ideas what goes wrong here?

Typeface - simple example

Hi, I reactivated my interest in Context. A lot changed since then... so I am became a beginner again. E.g. I don't know / understand how to use that Typescript-Framework. I tried to build a simple example, but I do not get it to work. I crosschecked successfully with simplefonts that the fonts itself are working (via \simplefont[..]). In this example I wanted to put the Nimbus Sans fonts on the rm-Definitions (just to see that it is working). I like what I was reading in the wiki, examples, posts and manuels about the Typescript-framework - but can anyone help me to understand it really / help me to get this simple example to work? Adding supplemental information to entry in list of figures

Hi all, \nolist{}, I understand, is used in headings and presumably in captions as well to exclude parts of the heading / caption from the automatically generated list of contents or floats. Now, my question is what the canonical way would be to add information to an entry in a list of figures that doesn't appear in the caption to that figure; indeed, it might be desirable sometimes to specify the entry in the list of figures independently of the caption, very much like the LaTeX command \caption[entry text]{caption text} does. Problems with the minimals

Hi, I have installed the minimals for Linux. If I am using texexec now I am getting the following error: /usr/bin/mktexfmt: 926: /home/florian/context/tex/texmf/texconfig/tcfmgr: not found fmtutil: config file `fmtutil.cnf' not found. I can't find the format file `cont-en.fmt'! I am a little bit confused, becaus the minimals worked just fine for me :-(. How can I fixed it? Greetings Florian

Does Makempy still work?

Hi everybody, I tried to make a Metapost outline by following the mmakempy manual but it didn't work. As I saw that "makempy" and "makempy.bat" files were removed in 2010 (I don't remember the date), my question is: is it still usable/valid feature? I processed the example from the manual, both from a standalone mp file and a tex file (which follows): \starttext \startMPcode input mp-grph ; beginfig(1) ; graphictext "$e=mc^2$" scaled 10 dashed evenly withdrawcolor .7blue withfillcolor .7white withpen pencircle scaled 2pt ; endfig ; \stopMPcode \stoptext It sucessfully created the test-mpgraph.pdf with the text processed by TeX but the result page is blank, though it seems the "graphic" is on a line by itself (seen from another document where all the lines go down). When the mp file is processed with "mtxrun --script mptopdf", it warns of a width and height of less than 1in when it tries to convert from ps to pdf. When the tex file is processed with "mtxrun --script context", it complains that metapost had a problem flushing a literal and that it couldn't find pstoedit. Of course, this could be the problem, but I have no idea of how I could get around this. By the way, I use the TeXlive 2010 pretest. Thanks. -- Cédric

Hello all, I'm looking for a way to insert any character (CSV separator) into a variable. Manually insert a double (or single) quote is not a problem, but how to use the universal way to not have to change the macro definitions? Is there another possibility to insert a macro parameter into a Lua variable than the use double or single quote? Any "universal" alternative is unfortunately impossible: For example: \def\setseparatorC#1{\directlua{Sep=#1 }} ??? With cmd.exe call C:\luatex\minimals-beta\context\tex\setuptex.bat C:\luatex\minimals-beta\context\tex does it's job correctly. I would like to know the same for Windows PowerShell: . \startinterface and module documentation

Hi Hans, there is a clash between \startinterface from mult-ini to set constants and variables and module documentation. The file s-mod-02.tex defines a paragraphe environment with the same name and as a result of this it's not possible to use a module in it's docu for examples. polish sorting

Hi, I'm creating some sorting tables. While researching this topic I stumbled on the Polish dictionary sorting rules: if two strings are equal except for case then the one gets precedence that begins lowercase.[1] (This seems to apply to the Swedish order as well but I have no means to verify that. Apparently, my German dictionary (from 1991) follows the same rule without explicitly stating so.) Context seems to prefer it the other way round, so I modified two functions from sort-ini.lua to handle that; but I'm not happy with this solution. So my question: is there already, or could we have some mechanism to influence the details of sorting in context?
