Wikifying: footnotes in margin - two questions

Hi all, when Hans introduced the criterium option to \setupnote in recent betas of MkIV, he asked me to wikify the problem of typesetting footnotes in the margin in order to demonstrate the usage of that option. There are, however, two questions I'd like to settle first. For one thing, the new algorithm is still error prone as I can provide examples where it fails. What is the preferred way to point out such a problem (in the wiki or whereever), so it will be delt with eventually? Secondly, can someone please explain to me why the example below produces so strikingly different results when processed with MkII or MkIV? In particular, I'd like to know why the footnote numbers are placed differently and, unless this is due to a bug, how to mimic the MkII behaviour in MkIV. Hi, Is it possible to change the name of the font as it appears in the pdf file? More specifically, I am using Termes font, but I want that the document properties to show the name of the font as Times. Is that possible? Is doing so a violation of the font license? Aditya

Hello, I'm looking for some stuff about calling MP from ConTeXt Lua. The only thing I found is a short reference at http://www.luatex.org/svn/trunk/manual/luatexref-t.pdf, but even when I read some basics (pages 79-83), I don't even know how to draw a line between two points. So I'd like to find a tutorial or examples or a deeper reference about how to call MP via Lua from ConTeXt. - Any idea? Cheers, Lukas

Hello, I'd like to ask - - where could I find a list of variables which (Con)TeX(t) defines to MetaPost scope? When I browsed the Hans' presentations, I encountered "PaperWidth", "PaperHeight", "Page" etc. (see e.g. "s-pre-22.tex"). I didn't find them mentioned/explained in any manual (especially: in "mpman.pdf", tab. 5 on pg. 71, there is a list of MP internal variables). So where I could find them with a short description? Questions regarding the bibliography

Hi, I've a bunch of questions regarding the bibliography. I didn't find much useful information somewhere, neither in the wiki, the manual or in bibmod-doc.pdf. If my questions are answered elsewhere feel free to point me to the right direction. 1) Why are there redundant keys in the publication list: \startpublication [ k=ram, t=book, a=Ramez Elmasri, % BTW: How to input many authors in this place? y=1981, % not taken into account u=http://foo.bar.com ] \author {Ramez}[R.]{}{Elmasri} % Is it OK to leave out the first bracket? \pubyear {2007} \biburl {http://foo.bar.com} \stoppublication I checked that the »y=1981« is not taken into account, in fact I can remove it without problems, if I remove \pubyear it doesn't work. What's »y=...« for? Same goes for \author vs. a=... Why two locations for the author and url...? 2) What about not valid entries? \biburl for example is not a valid BibTeX entry type, it's neither required, nor optional. Can I provide it without running into problems? Providing for example \country leads to problems with the year. But \biburl is not used in the style, \country is. 3) During testing I forgot to say \usemodule[bib] and it worked well. Is this line not needed any more? 4) How to specify the \edition entry? Use the attached file for testing. If I specify \edition {5} I get »5 edition« using the setup \setuppublications[alternative=num]. That's wrong, either 5th edition or edition 5. When I use \setuppublications[alternative=ams] I get 5th ed. That's correct. For this reason I cannot enter \edition {5th}. The correct input should be independent from the style used. 5) How to specify online sources? BibTeX has no proper data type for this. But BibLaTeX has the type »online« with the special field urldate (for the access date). Maybe there's a corresponding functionality in ConTeXt. Thanks in advance. Regards Marco

(And handwritten looks different as the name suggest.) I use a structure like \startproduct prd_JournalVolume \component c_A.tex \component c_B.tex \stopproduct to produce a single PDF file for the volume of a journal. Is there a way in MKII to adapt this so that instead of a single JournalVolume.pdf, I get c_A.pdf c_B.pdf where each component file has the proper pagination as well as functioning external and internal hyperlinks? I am interested in the latest updates, but I do not want to get into trouble with a bad update. Last time I stopped in ConTeXt TL2009 quite work and I had to completely install TL2010. At the moment its no fun dealing with weights/opticals. How to use a true type font?

Hello, I'm trying to use the BrickToBrick.ttf font. It can be freely downloaded from http://moorstation.org/typoasis/designers/klein05/pic05/brick2brick.htm. Problems are: 1) What's the best destination where the BrickToBrick.ttf should be placed? (Now, I've copied the file to c:\ConTeXt\tex\texmf-local\BrickToBrick.ttf.) 2) How to make ConTeXt realize that a new (.ttf) font has been added to use? Is it necessary to run any special routine? 3) How to use the font? I tried: \definefont[BRICK][BrickToBrick.ttf at 30pt] \starttext {\BRICK abcdefghijklmnopqrtsuvwxyz ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRTSUVWXYZ 0123456789 } \stoptext But I got just letters and numbers. 4) Another thing is that there are only 14 pictures (= letters) in the font. So I don't know whether to use them via "a", "b", "c"... and what would happen for "z" as for 25th letter, or how. - I saw this font working - it was used in the thick "Book of Fonts III" by Pavel Stříž; it was used in the right bottom quarter at page 171. But the book was typeset by pdfLaTeX and I'd like to make it work in ConTeXt. Thank you in advance. Lukas

Hello all, Is it possible to open a PDF file (after compilation of ConTeXt) in other PDF viewer which is not the default setting? I mean change the default choice: context --autopdf file.tex to another, for example: context --viewer=PDFViewer file.tex I would like to retain the default browser settings, but I would like after ConTeXt compilation opened the files with something else. cow symbols don't work in MkIV

Removing banner from mtxrun output

In the modernized version of the R module (attached), which makes it possible to interact with the statistical programming environment R (http://www.r-project.org) mtxrun is used to call R on saved buffers containing snippets of R code. Optionally, the output from R can be included using \typefile. However, mtxrun includes a banner in the output file, example below. MTXrun | MTXrun | executing: R -q --save --restore MTXrun | MTXrun |> sample(1:10) [1] 5 3 1 9 2 6 10 8 4 7 > sample(1:10, replace=TRUE) [1] 1 10 7 1 7 5 2 2 10 5 > If the results of the computations are to be included in the text, this banner is ugly and distracting. Question: is it possible to instruct mtxrun not to make such a banner? Or, alternatively, is there an easy way to remove it before the text is included? I am using MKIV exclusively. Problems with the installation of the minimals on Win XP :-(

Hi, after solving my problems with the minimals with Linux, I have now a problem with the Windows version. :-( My boss allowed me to use ConTeXt for a book project :-), unfortunately we work here with WinXP and the first-setup.bat fails with the following error: mtxrun.exe – Komponente nicht gefunden (mtxrun.exe – component not found) Die Anwendung konnte nicht gestartet werden, weil kpathsea60071.dll nicht gefunden wurde. Neuinstallation der Anwendung könnte das Problem beheben. (Couldn’t start the application. Couldn’t found kpathsea60071.dll. A new installation of the application could solve the problem.) problem with tabulate header and footer

\setuptabulate[footer=repeat] has no effect, so is this a bug or if something has been changed? And \setuptabulate[header=repeat] can only repeat a single row(see the minimal example below). So is this a bug or is it never been implemented or thought like this? TIA for any help or feedback. Problem with Schusters letter package

I think I've managed to set ConTeXt to mkiv, things proceed relatively smoothly, and from the log file, it appears that the right files are read. I'm using the most recent version of Schusters's letter package. When compiling the example letter, the following error occurs: ! Undefined control sequence. <argument> \@@@@lsoptionmethod the macro in question seems to appear in default.nli but is not defined anywhere. Any and all help appreciated. Metapost and underscore

Hi, Really bad things happen if the variable name in metapost contains an underscore. It took me quite a while to isolate this problem. \setupcombinedlist ignores `level' argument?

Hi all, If I understand this right, \setupcombinedlist[content][level=section] tells ConTeXt to list up to section level when doing \completecontent. But it seems no matter what I set for `level', \completecontent lists however deeply it can. Here is a minimal example: \setupcombinedlist[content][level=section] \starttext \completecontent \chapter{Level 0} \section{Level 1} \subsection{Level 2} \subsubsection{Level 3} \subsubsubsection{Level 4} \subsubsubsubsection{Level 5} \stoptext Is this a bug, or I did something wrong? -- There is no emotion; there is peace. Hi all! I’m using the structureuservariable to set an author on a per chapter basis. Dear all, I had installed minimals in a folder 'context' in my home directory. I am using a Macbook 10.6.4. I have been using MarkIV successfully for a number of months. I recently decided to update but I get the result below. I followed the instructions on Contextgarden as before in the ConTeXt Minimals page. I finally trashed the folder and did everything from scratch. I use TeXshop as my editor. I would be very grateful if anyone could give me the steps to get ConTeXt Minimals working again on my Mac. Strange optical scaling

Dear all, I was about to adapt the type-optical module to include Semibold and Condensed when I noticed that optical scaling is not working as expected. To be more precise only downscaling works. Let me give you a short example of what I did: \usemodule[type-optical] \usetypescript[minion] \setupbodyfont[minion,12pt] \starttext \title{Title} \section{Section} Text \tfxx tfxx \tfx tfx \tfa tfa \tfb tfb \tfc tfc \tfd tfd \stoptext This document is composed of various font sizes: \tfxx to \tfd scale to 7.2, 9.6, 14.4, 17.28, 20.736, and 24.888pt. According to the definitions in type-optical \tfxx should be set in MinionPro-Capt, \tfx and \tf in MinionPro-Regular, \tfa and \tfb in Subhead and the rest is Display size. Looking at the resulting PDF file with pdffonts indicates that MinionPro-Regular and MinionPro-Capt are the only fonts used. Not so Subhead or Display sizes. Changing the bodyfont to [minion,14pt] results in MinionPro-Subh and MinionPro-Regular to be included. I was curious and tried the same thing with Latin Modern: \setupbodyfont[8pt] \starttext \title{Title} \section{Section} Text \tfa tfa \tfb tfa \tfc tfa \tfd tfa \stoptext Same problem: Only LMRoman8-Regular is used. By including the lines \tfxx tfxx \tfx tfx LMRoman5-Regular and LMRoman6-Regular are included in the PDF. Again not the larger sizes. I'm quite puzzled about this strange behaviour and would apreciate any help. Hi guys, I'm designing a student BSc and MSc/MEd thesis template for our department[1]. Our student volunteered to help me by doing his thesis in ConTeXt, so I could really see what we have to fix or work around. We actually managed to figure out lots of things thanks to mp-cb-en.pdf, but we still have some problems (MkIV only, in MkII it seems to work OK). 1) Footnotes and other references' colors alternate between red and green (eg. page 7). 2) One footnote from TABLE, gets lost, while the other one appears normally (eg. page 28). 3) Reference in PDF bookmarks to 4.3 Konsolidacija doesn't get created properly. Hi folks. Just hit a strange feature using \about to give me the title of a referenced section. When the title is long, there seems to be an automatic cut-off, as if some form of \nomarking had been used on the last words of the title. So with a section somewhere in the text like \section[sect0101]{Residence and domicile and the taxation of overseas income} a later reference of the form See \about[sect0101] for further details gives me See 'Residence and domicile and the taxation of overseas ... ' for further details What I would like is for the full title to be output, however long. I have had a look through the sources but not managed to identify where any default cut-off is defined. Can someone help. Oh, and my apologies, I haven't upgraded to MkIV yet, so this is a MkII question. Thanks very much, Duncan

Impostion to make a scroll

I am trying to string 10 pdfs together onto one very wide page so I can print it as a scroll. I've tried using texexec as follows: $texexec --combination=10*1 --pdfcombine infile.pdf but what I get is 10 pdfs at the top of an A4 sheet. How do I make a custom page size 1480mm x 210 mm? I've also tried using a tex file like the following: \definepapersize [scroll][width=1480mm, height=210mm] \setuppapersize[A5][scroll] \setuppaper [topspace=0mm, backspace=0mm, dx=1mm, dy=0mm, nx=1, ny=10, margin=0, width=148mm, height=210mm] \setuplayout [topspace=0mm, backspace=0mm, margin=0mm, width=1480mm, height=210mm, header=0mm, footer=0mm] \setuparranging[XY] \starttext \insertpages [input.pdf] \stoptext I get the right sized pdf sheet, but all the input.pdf pages are stacked on top of one another in a big mess all on the right hand side. Hi, in my work I have a lot of formulas inkl. subformulas. Doing the examples at the wiki two questions came up: a) how to generate a table of formulas? b) what is the right/better way for subnumbering? a) I tried the example for generating a table of formulas from the wiki (http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Math/Display#List_of_Formulas) but instead of a list I get in the pdf a »no list method«. What do I missed here? b) I found two descriped ways how to create formula (sub-)numbering: 1) using \formulanumber and \subformulanumber (third example from http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Math/Display#The_Manual_Method) But context always reports here: ! Undefined control sequence. <argument> ...^{\vfrac {1}{2}} &\subformulanumber {b}\cr a^2 + b^2 &= c^2 &\... 2) using the \NR[..] like it is described on http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Multiline_equations#Working_with_equation_num… and http://dl.contextgarden.net/myway/mathalign.pdf. This way compiles through. But which way is the future context way? In which way can I combine subnumbering and including to list some (not all) subformulas? Thanks for your help

xml/fo typesetting with ConTeXt/foXet?

Hi list! I am hoping that someone can point me towards some more information on typesetting FO (Formatting Objects) with foXet and ConTeXt. I've read the threads on the foxet mailing list (and I assume that's dead, last post in 2005), and the wiki provides pretty sparse information. There are some files listed in the manual, but it doesn't say how to load them (or I missed that part, very possible). I can parse my .FO file, but the content is just flowed into PDF, there are no line breaks, or headings, or anything-- it just strips out the xml tags. Thanks for any help/directions! Best, Mica

Dear ConTeXt users, I am trying to write a document (grammar notes) in English and Japanese and so far have used XeTeX (for Unicode support) with tikZ (for graphics) quite successfully. However, I wish to convert to (Xe)ConTeXt in order to have more control over the page design. At the moment I am stuck at trying to define English and Japanese fonts. In XeTeX I used \usepackage[BoldFont]{xeCJK} \setCJKmainfont{IPAMincho} \setCJKsansfont{IPAGothic} \setCJKmonofont{KanjiStrokeOrders} in order to set the three different Japanese fonts I am using. I haven't found any documentation on how to implement something equivalent in ConTeXt and would be most grateful if someone could outline how I would best go about converting my XeTeX document to ConTeXt. Many thanks. Kind regards, Severin P.S.: If you think I'm crazy for trying to mix XeTeX, ConTeXt and tikZ, please tell me now... =) Also, it feels like ConTeXt MkIV with LuaTeX would be the best choice (if the project were just already beyond the beta stage), but I don't really know an awful lot about that either. urgent bottom line problem (thin paper)

Hi, before getting the train to Praha there is an urgent last problem to be solved: The bottom line of body text and footnote text need to be absolutely at the same height (due to a very thin paper used)! I tried to fine-tune the height of layout by 1pt up-and-down, but the difference stays: at least 1mm. Is there a "...skip" that's needs to be adjusted? (using grid mode is a no-go!) Help please!! Hi, I'm new to ConTeXt (from LaTeX). I'm trying it out for a course paper that I need to write and running into a problem with the output pdf. With respect to the code below, when I compile it, I get the odd text "pubs]References" under the "References" section heading. I've looked around, but I can't find anyone having a similar problem. Is this caused by something I'm doing incorrectly in the ConTeXt code or is it something wrong with the bib module? Hello, can m-units be made to adjust it's font style to local font? For example \usemodule[units] \starttext \ss 1 \Bit\Per\Second \stoptext will still use serif font for units. Also, can m-units be set up to use spacing like 1\,\Bit\Per\Second instead of normal spacing? I saw there are some definitions for that in m-units.tex, but haven't found a way to activate them. Hi, I uploaded a beta. There have been some changes in the initial font loading code (mostly an experiment and hopefully compatible). The default load->cache method is unchanged (and tagged table') but you can configure others (given tat you run luatex 0.63) There are three optional levels of intermediate garbage collection: \enabledirectives[fonts.otf.loader.cleanup=1] % true|false 1 2 3 The higher the number, the less memory is used (I'm preparing a chapter for hybrid.pdf that discusses these methods and gives some statistics). By default cleanup is turned off. Garbage collection efficiency differs per situation and is somewhat platform dependent. There are three methods but only table and sparse make sense: \enabledirectives[fonts.otf.loader.method=table] \enabledirectives[fonts.otf.loader.method=mixed] \enabledirectives[fonts.otf.loader.method=sparse] In some cases sparse might save a bit of memory but at the cost of runtime and even then it only concerns making a font cache-ready so in practice it is seldom needed to change the defaults. Only mess around with these directives if you are convinced that it will improve your situation. As said, these are the results of an experiment so we keep them around. If no serious problems are found in the beta I will release a current, so that we're nicely in sync with todays luatex beta. But I would like to have the possibility to use a parameter to for example make checkboxes in three columns. How would I do this? Lastly, in GetNiveauOfService there is text. How can I make this language dependent. For example in English I want: (1 = low, 9 = high) but in Dutch: (1 = weinig, 9 = veel) and properly it would be a good idea to have two optional parameters when you want other descriptions. Hello, Can be deployed print letters due t-letter module in the cycle? When I use recursion, then an error occurs. Accessing fonts

Hi, I can only load some fonts (like Fontin) that are in ~/texmf or ~/.fonts if I load it using the file: directive. The name: directive does not seem to work, even if the font is in ~/texmf directory. As a result a lot of my old documents (which generally use typescripts or simplefonts module by Wolfgang) have stopped working. I can fix things on a case by case basis, but I wonder if others are also facing similar problems and there is bug lurking somewhere that is platform dependent. I am using 2010.09.05 on linux-64. Hi Hans Hi all, i use the latest context minimals under windows xp with the SciTE Editor. Since some weeks, automatic closing and opening of the PDF doesn't work anymore. My testfile pdfopen.lua has only one line: os.execute('pdfopen --file "calluna.pdf"') If I run this file with: mtxrun --script "pdfopen.lua" Adobe Reader 9 crashes completely and wants to send an error report to microsoft. If I run the same file with: lua pdfopen.lua the file opens immediately. For me it seems to be a problem in luatex. Greetings Lutz

Module t-letter: Headers, Footers And Back Address

Hello everyone, an issue arised while writing a letter with the third party module t-letter (http://modules.contextgarden.net/letter) I've read the official documentation (Correspondence with ConTeXt) but I found no solution to: a) Setup a header/footer for the first page and configure a different one for the following pages. Page 46 of the documentation describes the setup of the specific (letter) layers. With the "state" parameter it's possible to enable (= "start"), disable (= "stop") the header or start it on the second page and the following (= "next"), but if I configure the header for the first page with \setupletterstyle[head] [ state=start, alternative=left, fromrule=top, ] and then for the following pages \setupletterstyle[head] [ state=next, ... ] only the second setup is typeset. From this it follows that the first setup is just overwritten. The header on the first page should only contain a name and than a thin line (a "\hairline" similar to the built-in variable "fromrule"). The header on the following pages should contain variable things and than also a thin line. Unfortunately I found no possibility to get this done. b) I would like to define a back address which should be typeset above the addressee. Page 44 of the documentation illustrates amongst other layers the back address layer, but there is no way to activate and configure this layer. I've tried it with \setupletter[backaddress][...] and \setuplayer[backaddress][...]. Maybe someone have a tip. Thank you and have a nice week. I am trying to define a (paper) feedback form. One of the things I need is checkboxes. tikz fading graphic

Hi, this is the first time I use tikz and maybe something is missing in my example. I tried the second graphic from page 206 of the tikz manual. Sadly I only get a opaque blue square. Context to RTF :-/

Hi, is there any practical solution to convert a context-document into a rtf-document? (Unfortunately I must send my documents to word users :-( ) I do not need a perfect rtf file. It would be sufficient if the footnotes and headings would be tranformed. (Layout / Tabells etc are not so important) I've read the FAQ and I know there is no tool like latex2rtf. In 2005 (five years ago) there was a approach to the problem on the mailing list, which suggest to write the document in xml and the produce on pdf and one html file. Is this a practical solution or is it, if you have absolute no idea about xml like me, a to time consuming approach? I've also tried some free pdftortf tools, but so far the results were disillusioning :-(. I am open for any suggestions ;-). Greetings FloMo

Hi, I have a multi-page PDF without page number . Is there simple way to insert page number by using ConTeXt ? I'm thinking about: * Setup ConTeXt with zero or small margins, * Setup page number (possibility to start from some value, not necessary from 1) * Include each page of PDF as picture * Build PDF with ConTeXt but I can not found an example for that. Room for comment on the backside of form

I am still trying to make a useful environment for paper feedback forms. One thing I am trying to do now, is to but lines on the back for when someone needs more space to give the feedback. For this I made the following macro: \def\PageWithComment[#1]{ \page #1 \crlf\crlf \thinrules[n=35,inbetween=\vskip1.5ex] \page } There are several needed optimisations. For starters the number of lines is hard coded. Is there a way to calculate them? At the moment it is always called with: \PageWithComment[Room for extra comments] What is the best way to set a default? Because most of the time it will all the time be the same value. With this setup the pagination has to be done completely manually. Not very handy. Is there a way that when a new page is generated, the comment page is inserted before the new page? And also after the last? XeLaTeX logo

Dear Hans, may I request the addition of XeLaTeX logo to ConTeXt core? I'm not sure if there's an official version of it, but I would simply define it the same way as XeTeX logo, only replacing \kern-.15em \TeX} with \kern0em \LaTeX} at the end of definition. (The original XeLaTeX logo definition is extra-complicated, so I'm not sure how it's done. I suspect that they use -0.125 kerning between mirrored E and L, but that makes the two letters clash too much. It's in tex/latex/metalogo/metalogo.sty) Thanks a lot, Mojca

vim syntax highlighting in MKIV

Hi Hans, Mojca, Aditya and List, just tried to use the vim Syntax Highlighting module in ConTeXt MKIV, but if running the documents complains it searches a file called filename-vimsyntax.tmp-vimsyntax.tmp sure that file not exists but there is a file called filename-vimsyntax.tmp is there a way to do a workaround so that the vim Syntaxhighlighting module would work in MKIV or does it need to be rewriten completedly? Dear all I should break a line to correct for an "Overfull \hbox ..." error. How can I achieve this, so that the line before the manual line break remains justified. Example: Original text "Abb. 1. Männchen von Megarhyssa rixator, einer charakteristischen Schlupf- wespe von im Holz lebenden Pflanzenwespen. R. Burri. Während der " The word "Schlupf" cannot be hyphenated any further and therefore "Schlupfwespe" should be put on the next line. However, the above line above becomes raggedright with standard commands, e.g. \crlf. So, how can I force the word "Schlupfwespe" to the next line so that the the entire paragraph remains justified? The command should be the equivalent to LaTeX's \linebreak command. Any suggestions welcome. Regards Hannes

linking to equations with leqalignno?

Hello, I am a bit lost. I am using this format for an equation: ----------------------------------------------------------------- \placeformula[nohair] \startformula \leqalignno{ - M^{}_{\bullet}a^{2}_{\bullet} = & M^{}_{2} = - \frac{J^{2}_{1}}{M^{}_{0}} \,, \cr - M^{}_{\bullet}a^{3}_{\bullet} = & J^{}_{3} = \frac{M^{}_{2}J^{}_{1}}{M^{}_{0}}\,. \cr } \stopformula ----------------------------------------------------------------- but then,using \in[nohair] to link to the equation in the text of the document does not work. I get a [??] I think this is related to leqalignno, because \in[] works fine without it. What should I do in this case? thanks, Pau

extra row at the end of matrix

The matrix from the following example has an extra row at the end. ============= \starttext \startformula A = \startmatrix[left={\left(\,},right={\,\right)}] \NC 1 \NC 2 \NR \NC 3 \NC 4 \NR \stopmatrix \stopformula \stoptext ============= I am using mkiv version: MTXrun | current version: 2010.07.30 11:35 This is LuaTeX, Version beta-0.62.0-2010082314 Removing the last \NR fixes the problem, but this is certainly different from the previous mkiv/mkii behavior. Hi, I uploaded a beta. There have been quite some changes in the lua code, not so much in terms of functionality but in organization (a first step to a more formal api). So, if you use calls to functions in mkiv, you might need to check it. There have been some extensions but those will become available when the next luatex release happens. multiple flow charts in the same document

Hi all, I want to place multiple flow charts in the same document. However, connection comments displays correctly in the first chart, but disappears in the second chart. New beta: protrusion and expansion
