Hi all, working on a book project with index and bibliography, I discovered two small bugs (at least I think they are bugs): 1. index sorts uppercase letters after lowercase letters. Minimal example: \starttext \index{Aardvark}Aardvark \index{azygous}azygous \page \setupregister[index][n=1] \placeregister[index] \stoptext I would expect azygous to follow Aardvark, but it is sorted before. 2. (Maybe not a bug, but a somewhat unfriendly behavior): When a \cite command refers to a non-existent key and sort=bbl, ConTeXt bombs out with a lua error: ! footnotes when using RtL (Arabic)

Dear all, Two quick questions regarding footnotes and Arabic: 1. How do I get a footnote rule/marker to go from right-to-left (i.e. to begin at the right margin instead of the left margin)? 2. I would like some of my footnote streams to run RtL for Arabic, and also for those footnotes to be in paragraph form (i.e. \setupnote[afootnote][paragraph=yes] ). But when I add this command, my footnote instead runs LtR, the letters get cut up (i.e. the Arabic script is not connected), and I lose my footnote marker to add insult to injury. How should I define a footnote stream to run RtL in paragraph form? Many thanks in advance. Kind regards, Talal p.s. Hello, let's have the following example: --- \starttext \tt \input tufte \hairline \tfx \input tufte \hairline \tfxx \input tufte \stoptext --- When I look at the result, I see the smaller font the bigger "gap" between lines (or this may be taken as "line height" relative to letter height). As I would need to type many datafiles, it's important for me to reduce line height, even if readability of the text becomes a bit worse. Is it possible to achieve this anyhow? Another question: How to force new line and new page to start? - LaTeX provides \newline, \newpage\ linebreak and \pagebreak commands - see e.g. http://www.personal.ceu.hu/tex/breaking.htm. present state of critical editions with ConTeXt MKIV ?

Dear all, My apologies for flooding the mailing list as I try to come up to speed quickly with some of the perhaps more arcane usages of ConTeXt over the weekend. I have come to understand that ConTeXt MKIV can indeed produce beautiful critical editions (including those of Arabic texts). I've spent some time scouring the mailing list and wiki with things related to critical editions and Arabic (from the early 2000's until now), including the developing CitTeXt project. However, I have some questions. From my (nascent) experiences and readings regarding critically editing texts, the following appear to be necessary tasks for any typesetting software used to produce critical texts [1] (I have placed an + next to those features which seem to already be implemented in MKIV, and a '?' next to those which I am unsure) : 1. Marginal line numbers + 2. Keying lemmas to linenumbers ? Footnote streams where the lemmas are referenced in connection with the line numbers (and thus not by puting a footnote reference number in the body of the text after the variant). I.e., functionality similar to ednotes or Ledmac in LaTeX. From what I've read, it seems this might remain the most problematic matter currently. 3. Formatting the lemma footnote streams in paragraph/block form OR in columnar form ? This mailing list provided direction to using \setupnote[footnote][n=x], where if x=0 makes the footnotes into a single paragraph, and if x=2 or more than 2 or more columns appear. I am unclear, due to my relative inexperience with ConTeXt, whether this is deemed robust enough as part of the solution of keying lemmas to linenumbers (#2 above). 4. Lemma abbreviations ? When the lemma is rather long, it should be displayed partially only preceding the note at the bottom of the page 5. Nested or overlapping lemmas ? 6. Cross references to lines ? 7. Line number switches + I.e. being able to turn line numbering on and off, restart, etc. 8. Multiple footnote streams + 9. Parallel typesetting ? I.e. It seems this was last recently discussed on this list in August 2010, and I assume it is naturally still in development, as these matters surely take time. Thus, the main issues seemingly remaining are related to lemmas. Issues number 2 to 5 are my main concern at the moment. Any advice on currently effecting these and other matters with a '?' after them (or being told that it is currently impossible) would be most appreciated. Alternatively, it would be nice just to know where things stand. Verbatim text loaded from a file?

Hello, I'd need to show contents of a (text) file like verbatim text (with a monospace font). So to do something being described at http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Verbatim_text using \startcode SOME TEXT \stop code, but the difference is that I don't need to write SOME TEXT manually but I need to load it from a (text) file. Moreover, I'd need to have the following options: - To alter the font used for numbering lines, so that it would be smaller than the normal text. - To specify number of the first and/or last line to be printed. - The input file may contain the end-of-page character, \0C. So I'd need this char - to be ignored - and/or to force printing from a new page. Is there a ConTeXt command which would provide all above? TeXexec MkII, ConTeXt MkIV

Hello, I have pretty recent installations of TeXLive 2010 (for Cygwin) and ConTeXt Minimals (for Windows). In both installations, running TeXexec reports it is ConTeXt MkII ... but running ConTeXt directly reports itself as MkIV. I would like to synchronize TeXexec and MkIV ... as MkIV ... how is this done -- for each installation? Thanks for your help, Tom.

In my example, the overall document is Latin-based (e.g. English), with a paragraph of Arabic text; I want this Arabic paragraph as a whole to fit onto the grid (though obviously the individual Arabic lines of the paragraph would not). Currently, when I typeset an English paragraph, followed by an Arabic paragraph, followed by an English paragraph, the second English paragraph is no longer on the grid, having been throw off by the Arabic one. I'm looking for some way to automatically calculate and fill in the vspace needed for this. This is not the same as the issue of an Arabic word or phrase (or mathematic formula) being typeset in the midst of Latin text, as discussed http://www.mail-archive.com/ntg-context@ntg.nl/msg46163.html. Lettrines in MkIV

For my students, I've made some lecture presentations in color, and I print them in black&white, with four pages on one page for the handout. Hi list, I wrote a custom pretty printer (verbatim) for Free Pascal/Turbo Pascal/Delphi source files. It's attached to this mail together with a ConTeXt test files that shows the features and some special cases. The pretty printer can handle: reserved words (bold) {...}-, (*...*)- and //...-style comments {$...} compiler directives '...' strings embedded assembler code (asm ... end) It's based on the Lazarus IDE syntax highlighter (Free Pascal IDE), which should be pretty Delphi-like. The main difference to Lazarus highlighting is that comments are not bold, but slanted. That looks much better when no colors are used. I'm not experienced in Lua programming, but I hope there are no major issues. I'd really appreciate any feedback: comments, suggestions and corrections (if necessary). I hope that eventually the Pascal pretty printer can make it's way into the ConTeXt distribution. Best wishes, Stefan. PS: Thanks for the Lua pretty printer, which served as a good starting point.

May I ask one further newbie question of simplefonts: how do I change the font for just the "fallback" font, without affecting the mainfont? Is there a way to do this by setting the size in points, or in scale (percentage), or some other fashion? In fontspec, i was accustomed to something like: \newfontfamily{\arfont}[Script=Arabic,Scale=1.66,WordSpace=1.66]{Scheherazade-Regular} I am sure there are equivalents for these feature (size, scale, wordspace); I've seen many features in the simplefonts pdf. But i'm unsure how to define something like "arfont" using simplefonts. Simple Bibliography

Hi there, in the attempt to stich together a simple bibliography, I don's seem to get as far as I'd have liked. My apologies if I'm dumbing down the level of discussion here. But I'm trying to get my head around fonts and bidirectionality using ConTeXt MkIV (as a rather unsophisticated user, not as a developer). To begin with, since it's all bit much at once, I'm trying to use simplefonts. I am unclear how to establish English as my language and its font as my main font (using the default font), and Arabic as a secondary language (using Scheherazade). What would I change in the ara-sty environment found on wiki.contextgarden.net/Arabic_and_Hebrew? Or, if I don't need to use this, should I define my own macro in my tex document for directionality? I'm probably making a mess of some basic things here, but could use some help. I have working familiarity with Fontspec over on the XeLaTeX side of things, but the sparse documentation of simplefonts is leading to my uncertainty as how to proceed. Many thanks in advance. Hi, how do I get typewriter text in formula? I've tried: \startformula r = \mono{foo} \stopformula but that gives mono from a different font. I'd like to have consolas, but it looks like courier new. No bleeding with 2UP arranging

Hello, When using 2UP arranging, the pages are clipped to their bounding box, loosing any bleeding. This table indicates what happens instead: \tfxx 6pt -> lmroman6 (as expected) \tfx 8pt -> lmroman8 (as expected) \tftf 10pt -> lmroman10 (as expected) \tfa 12.0pt -> lmroman10 (instead of lmroman12) \tfb 14.4pt -> lmroman10 (instead of lmroman12) \tfc 17.3pt -> lmroman10 (instead of lmroman17) \tfd 20.7pt -> lmroman10 (instead of lmroman17) \switchtobodyfont[small] 8pt -> lmroman8 (as expected) \switchtobodyfont[big] 12pt -> lmroman12 (as expected) \title 17.3pt -> lmroman10 (instead of lmroman17) \section 12pt -> lmroman10 (instead of lmroman12) The commands \title and \section and the font size switches \tfa, b, c, and d scale the font to the correct size, however, the wrong optical size is assigned. Modules, namespaces, Luacode etc..

Hello my wise masters of the Force and teachers of Jedi... It seems that my first module (SCANCSV of scancsv.lua library of CTM in Brejlov) work without any visible errors (without documentation and with a junkyard yet), but I'm not sure whether is there a hidden problem or future collisions. Therefore I have a few of questions for modules namespaces, luacode namespaces etc. I want to ask how relates a namespace ConTeXt module with namespace of Lua code, which is listed within this module and others questions. 1. Is the namespace of Lua code independent of the namespace module? 2. If are ConTeXt macros defined in the module, are automatically in its namespace? 3. Can both namespaces (module and Luacode) somehow connected? 4. What happens when I have two macros with the same name in two different modules? 5. Can I call the macros of the same names in different namespaces (diferent modules)? 6. Can I read about somewhere more? 7. I enclose below a minimal example of the module (I do not know why there are some things) to comment or write yours comments and suggestions, etc. I'd like to start with something simpler, but this is the reality of our Empire.... Hello, is it possible that Lua gets value of a MetaPost variable? Let's have MetaPost code: z11=(0,0) z12=(1,1) z21=(0,1) z22=(1,0) aa[z11,z12]=bb[21,z22] So now aa = bb = 0.5. And I'd need to access MetaPost values 'aa' and 'bb' from Lua (e.g. in Lua: "local a = mpost.aa, b = mpost.bb"). Is it possible somehow? Regards, Lukas

composing characters in MKIV

Dear Hans (or anyone else), There are some fonts (including Lucida) that don't have all the needed character. A font feature "compose=yes" has been added to MKIV, but that one doesn't work for Lucida or any other Type1 font. The code must be there already since this is supposed to work for OpenType fonts. - Is there any way to fix horizontal and vertical position of accents (on glyph-per-glyph basis; that one probably needs to be slightly more low-level; maybe using lfg files)? - Do lfg files work for non-opentype (Type1) fonts? wrong sign or spacing in math/mkiv (at least in Lucida)

Dear Hans, I'm not sure if the same problem would occur with other fonts as well (it is probably worth trying), but at least it happens with Lucida. Something is wrong with the spacing around the plus sign or maybe the wrong plus sign is taken (I suspect that). In MKII the formula is nicely aligned, while it looks ugly in MKIV. Problems with x-set-11.mkiv

Hi, For some reason, line 248 of x-set-11.mkiv file (\blank[\v!line]) is not taken into account. As a result, when typesetting the setup-??.pdf files, the line of the first argument being described after a command is be too high and the word "optional" is mixed with it. When we change "\blank[\v!line]" with the low-level "\vskip\lineheight" it works as expected (or it seems). I understand this is not "beautiful", but it is a workaround for now. I am sure a fix will be available shortly. I noticed this when generating the seup file with the command (MkIV): "mtxrun --script context --run --interface=en --global --result=setup-en --purge x-set-12". There is no problem with the MkII equivalent (as it uses x-set-11.mkii instead): "texexec --int=en --pdf --global --result=setup-en --purge x-set-12". Regards. -- Cédric

Hi all, trying to figure out how postponed notes are processed in MkIV, I'm wondering when, or indeed, whether the tokens in \everyinsidenoteinsert and friends are being inserted. columnset - float vertical spacing

Hello, I need to reduce vertical spacing around floats in columnset. I have tried \setupfloats command as in example below, but without succes. And what about columns balancing? I have read the columns.pdf manual, but I don't understand it clearly. Formatting in TOC

Dear all, I would like to generate a table of contents, where each item should have a number, title and date. I use the user variables this way: \define[1]\ChapterListTextCommand{% #1\hskip 1.5em \hbox{ \doiftextelse{\structurelistuservariable{date}{(\structurelistuservariable{datum})}{} } } But actually I would like to align the date to some fixed horizontal position. Something like this: 1. Title of chapter 1 (9.2.2010) .... 5 2. Title of another chapter (10.3.2010) .. 10 3. A very long title of a chapter (10.5.2010) .. 34 4. Title of fourth chap. (8.4.2010) ... 25 Another complication is that I would like the line to snap to a grid. I tried it with framed, but I'm not good enough in ConTeXt. Please, any idea? Thank you, best regards, Tomas

Please see the attached minimal example and its error log. \placepublications[criterium=all] triggers error in ConTeXt 2010.09.29. It works fine in ConTeXt 2010.09.24. Both the luatex versions are beta-0.63.0-2010091123.

tagged pdf broken

Hi, in todays beta (20100929) the tagged pdf is broken! No tags are created and Preflight says: "An error occurred while parsing a contents stream"" See in attached zip folder a minimal example working (vers. 20100923) and corrupt (vers. 20100923). Custom lua script (updating and debugging)

Hi list, I'm currently messing around with a custom lua script (a pretty printer) and I have some beginner trouble. First: I put the file in "MyContexDir\tex\texmf\tex\context\base\". What do I have to do to let ConTeXt work with the script and to let ConTeXt know that something has changed in the script? Is "context --generate" enough (after initializing with "setuptex.bat")? Second: How can I debug errors in my *.lua file? Just put print("debug message") in the function that is (supposed to be) called? Any help appreciated and thanks in advance! Stefan

Hi all, first, for thosw of you who went to the meeting: welcome back home from the ConTeXt meeting - looking at the slides and at the pictures made me really sad I couldn't come; I really hope I will be able to make it next year to Porquerolles! Here's a question that has been on my mind for a while now and that I would have loved to ask Taco and Hans at Brejlov: we now have shiny new \userpagenumber and \realpagenumber etc. Is any of these available and accessible from within Metafun? Right now, in a StartPage -- StopPage environment, I use NOfPages and PageNumber, but it would be convenient if we had access to userpagenumber as well (so the number can be reset etc.) All best Thomas

unnumbered chapters

A standard (wiki, manual) means of obtaining an unnumbered chapter is to use \title, but this does not create an entry into the toc. So one can create a new head, as in: \definehead [unnumberedchapter] [chapter] \setuphead [unnumberedchapter] [number=no] \definecombinedlist [content] [unnumberedchapter,chapter,section] \setuplist [unnumberedchapter] [headnumber=no] Bof! (pardon my French, as they say in polite circles) Much easier (or cleaner if you wish), using the structured syntax, is: \startchapter [number=no,incrementnumber=no, title={Conclusions}] \stopchapter (The {} are not necessary, but I believe that this may make things more readable, given the practice to enclose typeset text within curly braces.) A problem occurs, though, if we use labels, as in: \setuplabeltext [chapter={Chapter }] % with trailing space; blank by default (which Hans *never, ever* uses, by the way...) Dear list, The following code numbers the figures in appendices with Roman numbers in MKIV (while in MKII there is no difference at all). On top of that it doesn't restart the counter, but simply continues. In my opinion the Roman numerals should be easy to configure, but not set by default, and it particular figures should not be numbered with 1,2,3,IV,V,VI, ... Justifying last line of paragraph

Hi there, what I'm trying to achieve is splitting a paragraph into two -- from TeX's point of view -- that still look like one single paragraph. To this end, I have to make sure that the last line of the first paragraph is justified just like all the surrounding lines, so, in the pdf output one couldn't tell that this is actually the end of a paragraph. so, How can I force the last line to be justified as well? In order to see the reason for my question, consider the following example: \setupwhitespace[big] \setupalign[line] \starttext \dorecurse{3}{\input knuth\par} \placefigure[right][fig:test1]{Basically just a bit of empty space.} {\framed[width=0.5\textwidth,height=0.4\textheight,offset=none]{Test}} {\input tufte\par} \stoptext The first couple of lines of the paragraph beginning on page two should really go on the previous page. Since the hang mechanism of \placefigure doesn't work due to the page break, I'd like to split this paragraph into two logical entities, so TeX can put the first on the first page and treat the second as a separate paragraph flowing around the picture. Hello Daniel. Malfunction your code was caused by two things: 1. CSV file contains TeX problematic characters (eg underscore_ which is used only in math mode) - should therefore be set catcodes. Correction is for example here: \def\lineaction{ \catcode`\_=12 \catcode`\%=12 \catcode`\&=12 \catcode`\@=12 % etc... \expanded{ \bTD\ssxx\Name, \Vorname, \Titel, \Bezeichnung \eTD \bTD\ssxx\Mail \eTD \bTD\ssxx\Raum \eTD \bTD\ssxx\Telefon \eTD} } 2. A simple parser that I wrote not process general CSV files (it not allow some items were in quotation marks and not others. That is, if you use within the field delimiter, must be ALL ITEMS quoted!) I modified the lines 16 and 198 your CSV table, which contained a single delimiter in quotes (instead of a semicolon delimiter, I used a comma) I change 16. line from: Bialluch;Kathrin;;Lehrbeauftragte;"KathrinBialluch(a)web.de; Kathrin.Bialluch(a)stimme-dortmund.de";; to line: Bialluch;Kathrin;;Lehrbeauftragte;KathrinBialluch(a)web.de, Kathrin.Bialluch(a)stimme-dortmund.de;; and on 198 line I made the same correction ... (library interpreting more columns ...) 3. I modified the code so that the tables, the tables are split at page breaks. eg: \def\bfilehook{\setupTABLE[split=yes]\bTABLE} Will now compile properly. Hi, I need to shape a index register as shown in this sample page: http://werksatz.com/attachments/index_sample.pdf -> the entries should be like \hangafter=1\hangindent=10pt\parindent0pt -> also the subentries (like in itemize: the "-" stands out) -> and the indicator should be the first character bold of the first entry with that letter (better see the example, it's hard to describe :-) How can this be done in MkIV?? Dear list, my publisher forces me to set different things as titles, in headers and table of contents. Hi, I'm dealing with the bugs/anomalies/wishes that showed up during the ctx conference. The following has been done so far: (1) With respect to registers, Jano had a wish to deal with mixed language indexes. As a result the current sorting code has been adapted. In the process also different control over sorting has been streamlined and this is controlled by the method variable. For the moment 'get it running as per mkii' is good enough. As cross referencing info is stored quite differently this is somewhat tricky. Hello Hans, thank you for implementing multilingual indexing. Is there a way to turn off case sensitivity? I would expect the result as written in the minimal example below. This is not wanted in every case (should be a switch). The "Oo oo Öo öo" part is probably tricky then, so I've sorted it as usual with xindy plus my custom module and I've got oá öb Oč Öď Oo oo Öo öo Öq öř Oš oů so the "Oo, oo, Öo, öo" part could probably depend on available methods (before, after, last, first). In practice, one hardly gets same lettering with the different accents. Second try. I use a structure like \startproduct prd_JournalVolume \component c_A.tex \component c_B.tex \stopproduct to produce a single PDF file for the volume of a journal. Is there a way in MKII to adapt this so that instead of a single JournalVolume.pdf, I get c_A.pdf c_B.pdf where each component PDF file has the proper pagination as well as functioning external and internal hyperlinks? $TEXINPUT worries

It seems that the commands context and texexec cause ConTeXt to look in different paths. I haven't been able to see any patterh here. "context" sees some files that "texexec" doesn't, and vice versa. Hi, For those who were not at the ctx conference (where it was demonstrated) .. there is a new feature. When you say: \setupbackeds[export=yes] You will also get a file called <jobname>.export which represents the document in xml format. You can postprocess such an export to for instance html. It's still somewhat experimental but also fun.
