Hi List, I am a new ConTeXt user coming from LaTeX background. To print duplex on my printer I need to flip even pages upside down. I looked into section 3.7 "Arranging Pages" of the latest ConTeXt manual (2010-10-26). It shows how to setup very elaborate page compositions but somehow I failed to find a solution for my little problem. Any help/advice is greatly appreciated. --Leo--

seeking 'hello world' example for Arabic typesetting with conTeXt

Dear all, I'm gradually getting my head around using ConTeXt to typeset texts marked up in TEI/XML. I'm trying to typeset an English/Arabic text and I keep breaking my teeth on the Arabic. I'm trying to do what I can with the macTeX 2010 distribution, but the documentation on the conTeXt wiki has me confused. The amount I don't know about TeX is truly daunting, but clearly there are some basic things about font management that I don't understand. I thought I had found a minimal example in http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Arabic_and_Hebrew that I could use as a starting point. After saving it locally as ara-sty.tex I tried to typeset: % engine=luatex \environment ara-sty \starttext \setarabic أهلا بالعالم! \stoptext a PDF was produced but it contained no text save for !. Among the things that conTeXt told me was: !define font : font with name arabtype is not found !define font : unknown font arabtype, loading aborted !define font : unable to define arabtype as \*Arabic20ptrmtf* Where should I look for this font? Where is conTeXt looking for it? If I were to find it, where should I put it? I gather that fonts on my system can be used, but font metric files for them have to be generated. How to do that? Apologies for the unfocused tyro questions, but the TeX world has become so much larger than it was when I last used it that I feel quite at sea with all the available documentation. thanks, Jon

interactive chapter titles in margin

Hi all, for my document setup, I would like to have interactive chapter headings, and I want the chapter titles in the margins only; they should not interfere with normal indentation, spacing, etc. So far, I haven't really found a solution. Hi all, the last days have brought a couple of bug reports on bibliographies in ConTeXt. I will try and create a number of examples so Hans can test and debug. In order to facilitate the creation of minimal examples for all users, we have a couple of suggestions: 1. There is now a dedicated page for bibliography support on the wiki; unsurprisingly, it's at http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Bibliographies. For the time being, this page is just a skeleton; you are all invited to contribute. 2. The page contains a link to a sample bib file. This file will be part of the main distribution (and hence of the minimals) under context/tex/texmf-context/bibtex/bib/sample.bib. I will send this file to Hans. At the same time, it is meant as a bibliography for ConTeXt related publications. So if you build minimal examples, please try with this file first. If the error you are reporting is triggered by a certain publication type which is not yet represented in the sample file, please modify the file on your disk, but *remember to add these modifications to the file on the wiki* (http://wiki.contextgarden.net/sample_bib) and drop me a line! If you want to add further ConTeXt related publications, feel free to do so! I will send Hans and Mojca updated versions of this file which I'll pick up on the wiki. 3. As you know, priority in development is given to mkiv. The bib module for mkii was written by Taco, and as far as I understood him, it is quite unlikely that he will have the time to do extensive work on it. Later today, I will try and coordinate the bug reports I can still find in an example. Please add your reports as well. All best Thomas

Chapter's frame too small

Bug or feature in list and error with setuptructure?

Hi list, I am using the following code with a recent beta (last week): \setuplist[subsection][numberstopper=, right=), style=\slanted] and the ')' is not slanted. However, it is the following: \setuplist[subsection][numberstopper=), style=\slanted] So, bug or feature? Also, \setupstructure[state=start] causes the compilation to stop after lpdf-pdx.xml. Minimal example : % \setupstructure[state=start]% doesn't work (lpdf-pdx.xml) \starttext \startitemize[n] \item one \item two \item three \item four \item five \stopitemize \stoptext In a my thesis, I got some other errors, please see attached file. The file (5.5 MB, 1500 pages approx.) contains the TOC, listing of the source files (on the left page, if short enough) and the result beginning from the right page. The content is divided in the same manner as Hans did - the tree structure is fully kept. End of page & orphan/widow control

Hello, could anyone give me an advice how to manage text flow (in terms of orphan/widow control with controlling of flushbottom raggedbottom effects?). I am desperate in fact ConTeXt is a great tool but I can't reach effective way how to control these things. (And be sure I have spent many hours above manual and wiki… but maybe I am not so technically capable.) In case I have longer text with many quotations, one-line paragraphs and direct speech (typically any novel), I am able to reach a stage without orphans and widows but context do what it want with an end of every problematic page – it simply shrinks it –1 line. I need to be able to create simply nice results in a basic-typography point of view of good novel typesetting (without orphans, widows, on grid and every page the same height). Sure I know about \setuptolerance setting but it has (imho) very poor effect for my purposes. (Sure, maybe I am not using it properly.) I have this question. I now get the messages below when installing context beta. Especially alarming sounds to me "unknown script 'base.lua' or 'mtx-base.lua" Is there something wrong with my setup, perhaps because of some change I missed? I did reorganize my disk layout somewhat, but I am fairly sure I put all directories and links in order. The output of the installation runis followed by the scripts I use. wrong name of a *.top file

Hi All, I am a new ConTeXt user coming from LaTeX background. I am using ConTeXt minimals "current" version on Linux (Ubuntu-9.04) ConTeXt ver: 2010.07.30 11:35 MKIV fmt: 2010.11.18 int: english/english LuaTeX, Version beta-0.64.0-2010111215 My file is named foo.11.tex (notice two "." in a filename). After running "context foo.11.tex" a bunch of files get created with the names such as foo.11.log foo.11.pdf foo.11.tex foo.11.tuc In addition there is a file named "foo.top" but NO "foo.11.top". Inspecting the file "foo.11.log" I noticed the line: systems : no foo.11.top Please, correct me if I am wrong but I think that proper name of the *.toc file in this case should be "foo.11.top" and not "foo.top". Somehow the present of two "." in a filename messed up context/luatex. If I rename the file to, let say, "foo-22.tex" with only a single "." remaining, then problem is gone and the file "foo-22.top" is properly generated and loaded. --Leo--

bib: ignoring 'criterium=cite'

Dear Taco/Hans, In MKIV the argument criterium=cite is ignored: I get the complete list of publications even though some of them are never cited anywhere. In MKII the list shows up just fine. On top of that the space between number [n] and bibliography item is simply too small when 10 or more bibliography items are used (in MKII it is fine). On the other hand MKII doesn't have enough blank space between title and the start of bibliography listing (I remember that bug since 2006 at least), while it is OK in MKIV. I use: \setuppublications [alternative=num, criterium=cite, sorttype=cite] But I will send a complete minimal example, hopefully tomorrow. Mojca

Portable linux Minimals installation?

Hello list! It's happening to me that I have to travel to a place where there's no broadband access, and I'd like to take ConTeXt with me. So I can't just run the installer and rsync the trees. Now, the question is: is it safe to tarball the ConTeXt root directory with executable and texmf trees, and move it around (on another machine)? Or are there hardcoded paths that prevents this? I couldn't find anything about this on http://wiki.contextgarden.net/ConTeXt_Minimals Thanks in advance. -- Marco

Using Bold SmallCaps in LuaTeX - typescript

Good evening! First of all, I'm new to this list and also a context/luatex newbe. I have some experience with LaTeX. I want to use a font (Neutraface2) in my documents and I'm struggeling with the typescript. I'm not able to get bold SmallCaps working (the bold face .otf file has the feature smcp, I checked). I tried various combinations and variations of \bf \sc in my document. It gives me bold OR smallcaps, but not bold AND smallcaps. Whats wrong here? Can someone give me an example typescript that I could modify to fit the Neutraface2 font? My attempt to make one is attached. Greetings, Chris

Problem \input a file (lastest minimals)

This problem started appearing with the latest minimals (updated today evening) and there was no such a problem before. Hello, There has been some discussion about this lately, but I have some questions about the sort order in registers. Consider this example: \starttext \index{42 numbers} \index{'apostrophe} \index{‘apostrophe} \index{’apostrophe} \index{"quote} \index{“quote} \index{”quote} \index{Oo} \index{ob} \index{oz} \index{Öa} Test \subject{Method zm} \placeindex[method=zm] \subject{Method zc} \placeindex[method=zc] \stoptext First of all, common to both methods, I'd like the unicode apostrophes and quotes to be ignored just like their "straight" counterpart. Is there a method to do so, apart from specifying the key manually? Using the zm method, entries beginning with a number appear at the very bottom of the index, which is quite a strange place especially as there is no separation with the previous letter. Using the zc method, the numbers are at the right place, but now entries beginning with an accented character appear wrongly in a separate group after the unaccented letters. Tabluating with fixed-width column

After updating the minimals again, thanks for fixing the previously mentioned problems, I see, that the tabulating environment does no more honor fixed width columns, For left aligned the fixed width is ignored, whereas the fixed width for a paragraph results in a maximum width paragraph. mkiv/luatex bug

Hi, I'm currently trying out context and somehow I can't get it to behave the way it should/I want it. I think I may be hitting a bug in either my setup or context mkiv. Somehow when using luatex/mkiv the spacing and placing of figures and such looks very different (and wrong) compared to pdftex/mkii (invoked using context --luatex/--pdftex). I think the bug is either in context or my context setup, because lualatex compared with pdflatex is fine, so it doesn't seem engine related. I already ran various combinations of (texexec|luatools|context) ((--generate|--make)||--all) but that didn't help. I'm experiencing this with TeXLive + TLContrib as well as context-minimals (only installed for testing) attached are: - Hello World.tex (from http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Hello_world ) - logs context.(lua|pdf).log - the resulting pdfs Hello World.(lua|pdf).pdf Would be nice if someone could help me with this, since I'm eager to play with luatex and context a bit more. Composed words: a simple way without a global replacement to |-|?

Dear list, today I was reviewing the hyphenation and stumbled on the composed word problem, as explained at http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Composed_words and in the ref-manual. Now, the trivial question sounds: is there a way to say to TeX "hey, consider the hyphen inside words a good breakpoint"? If not, I'm going to do a global replacement of ([a-z])-([a-z]) to $1|-|$2 , but somehow I feel I'm doing this wrong (because this will harm to the readability of the source). Any idea? Bibliogrraphy MKIV sort does NOT work

Hans, Could we (you and I) fix sort= so that we can make choices? Default sort=author does NOT function. As a matter of fact there seems to be no sort available. Also, can someone point me to the files required so that we (I) could write code to chose biblio style files for reference list eg econometric, elsevier, AEA, etc.

Can't use buffers inside a block

Hi, I uploaded a new beta. The most important issues are the following: (1) Table I fixed a few things and there is limit color support \VL[10] rule ten times wider than normal \VL[red] red rule \VL[red,10] both The same applies to \HL and \DL, but with \DL the first argument hs the number of spans, so we can have: \DL[2,red,10]. (2) Buffers and typing This whole bunch has been cleaned up and pretty printing has been redone. The \type command accepts an optional argument with settings. as does \starttyping, \typebuffer and \typefile (and the defined variants). The interface for defining visualizers might change a bit but I'm getting there. There is a chapter on it in the cld manual. Hi All, I am having trouble with the bib module. The bibliography section of my article contains references that I have not cited in the text. These are in my .bib file, but it seems to me that references that were not cited in the text were ignored when constructing the bibliography. This is a minimal example. The bib file is attached. TEI - conTeXt - pdf

All, Having abandoned apache's FOP, I've now been trying to get my arms around XML typesetting with conTeXt with the help of Thomas's excellent tutorial at http://wiki.contextgarden.net/TEI_xml. With some difficulty I got the philostratus.xml/lorem ipsum example to work, save for errors like this from the \definemargins command: ! You can't use `\dimexpr' in restricted horizontal mode. (The marginal notations are typeset, but so are the distance arguments) What I really need help with, however, is Arabic. Can anyone point me to a 'hello world' example of how to typeset TEIxml in Arabic using conTeXt? My TeX skills are very out of date and were never much to begin with, and I'm having a devil of a time getting my head around the welter of available documentation. I haven't even yet worked out how to point context at suitable fonts, or how to invoke them in the --environment .tex file. [I'm using the MacTeX-2010 Distribution on OSX 10.5.8. It took me some time do discover that I had to do: $ luatools --generate before I could run context at the command line thus: $ context --environment=tei-style philostratus.xml] Any hints, examples, or pointers to the relevant documentation would be gratefully received. How to get \iint?

Hi. The command \iint is defined in context (mkiv) but it doesn't produce the desired sign. What I should do to make it appear? (in log file I see that LMMath font desn't contain such symbol but I don't know much about font mechanism of context, btw in latex I could easily get that symbol so I think it should be in 'standard' math font). ConTeXt mkiv and Drupal

Dear Contextators, Has anyone tried to process TeX files written for ConTeXt mkiv in Drupal (http://drupal.org/)? To be more precise, there exists a so-called filter DruTeX (http://drupal.org/project/drutex) which can process LaTeX files for viewing them in a web page, but since my TeX files are written for ConTeXt, I wonder if there is a simple way to do the same in Drupal with ConTeXt. Or maybe I am going the wrong direction? Should I export through mkiv my TeX files to some other format than TeX for being understood by Drupal? Actually my documents are essentially one page each, without any complicated layout or graphics: there is only some text, and items within two or three sets of \startitemize, \stopitemize. SciTE & ConTeXt

Hello, I tried to follow the PRAGMA document for setting up SciTE to run with ConTeXt. The "Tools" menu seems to recognize that I am trying to process a ConTeXt file and the syntax highlighting seems to fit as well. However, when trying to Compile or Build, SciTE tells me >mtxrun --autogenerate --script context --autopdf --pdf myfile.tex sh: mtxrun: not found >Exit code: 127 When running mtxrun from the terminal or from the shell (by entering sh in the terminal) it works fine. My $PATH variable is set to find mtxrun (and context). How come SciTE can't find it? Many thanks. Severin P.S.: Does the --autopdf option try to automatically open the output? If so, how can I change the default to evince?

Hi! Could you please tell me how to sort bibliogrpahy in ConTeXt Mark IV? I've tried \setuppublications[sorttype=author,sort=yes] but this doesn't work. It seems that bibl-tra.lua contains two compare() functions. Which one is used (my Lua knowledge is far from perfect)? P.S.: I'm ready to convert my bibtex db to another format if this will help.

Problem with expansion tables (macros with variable numbers of paramaters)

Hello ConTeXist... I work on my first module (t-scancsv) which allows to process external CSV files. Now I have a problem with the processing of tables that require expansion line data. Unable to discover why my macro is not capable of handling the expanded rows. It seems to me that the macros with variable number of parameters work differently from the macros with a fixed number of parameters. I attach a minimal example of what problems occur in the processing of expanded lines. I need to write a macro \doloopaction with a variable number of parameters that would work as well as macro \doloopfromto, which has 3 fixed parameters. In addition, I attach a demonstration of the failing macro \DOLOOPFROMTO (variable number of parameters), but seems to me the same as the macro \doloopfromto. Dear ConTeXt group, I have Winedt 6.0 latest release with ConteXt support, MikTeX 2.9 16 Nov build (Luatex ver. .60). I am trying to move a book full of math to a ConTeXt document using lucida fonts. I have read everything I can find on this subject and serched all I can find in this list. I get the body text by: \setupbodyfont[lucida] and that works fine but ..... how do I get all the math symbols I need using lucida? neither %\setmathfont [Lucida New Math] %\setmathfont[Lucida] works. referencing position on page in index

Hi all, one of my favorite grammars contains rather elaborated indices: to a given entry they not only list the page numbers, but also the position on the respective page. To this end any page is subdivided into four regions to which the entries may refer separately. For instance, these entries: Aspekte beim Verbum 509\high{2} Assibilation 154\high{2·4} would refer to the second quarter of page 509 and to the second and fourth quarter of page 154 respectively. Is there a mechanism to achieve that or could the context’s referencing be extended in that way? Jano, thankyou very much. It is a songs book, and I need an author table of content. Your solution is very good, works fine, but using \pagenumber or incrementing a counter I can´t make it work. I replace \pagenumber with a incremental number to assure the label sorting. Hello there. I'm experience the following problem: with microtypography \overstrike plays weird. See the following minimal. I can't reproduce it with the latin modern fonts, so maybe it's a font specific issue. Convert eps to pdf

ConTeXt mkiv will take an encapsulated postscript (eps) file through \externalfigure [myfigure.eps] and creates a (compressed) pdf version as m_k_i_v_myfigure.pdf that conserves the vectorial components of the eps file. Other standard conversion tools, notably those based on ghostscript, generally create a bitmap image with pretty horrible results. The vectorial conversion must be fully trivial, but I am ignorant of the tools available for this manipulation (other than ConTeXt!), as well as the inverse (pdf->eps) conversion. Perhaps I am simply missing some simple (ghostscript, pstoedit, ...) option. I am posting this question to the ConTeXt mailing list as I am sure that someone can give a trivial answer, but also to indicate to those who may ignore this robust feature of ConTeXt. Also, \externalfigure is a very powerful macro that would justify more complete documentation in the revised reference manual. Alan

Hello ConTeXist, I want my macro to act differently inside \bTABLE ... \eTABLE environment and otherwise outside of that environment. Is there any sign (flag) which can determine whether my macro run inside or outside the \bTABLE .. \eTABLE environment? Or do I have two similar versions of my macros (one for the table environment and the other for normal environment) Explanation: To my macro work, I must have already expanded values inside table environment... How can I properly credit ConTeXt

Hello there. This was meant to be a mail to say thanks to the ConTeXt/LuaTeX teams for the wonderful work they did and are doing. I'm pretty new to ConTeXt but I'm really impressed. It happens that I'm typesetting a journal that will hit the printer soon. Now, the question sounds: how can I credit ConTeXt/LuaTeX properly? normal font incorrectly set to italic

hi, when i build my context mark iv font database via mtxrun --script font --reload, for some fonts i get italics when i want normal fonts, most notably with “cambria” and “envy code r”. with cambria, this is likely due to the fact that the regular and math variants are served within a .ttc file. \setmainfont[Cambria][regularfont=Cambria Math] does the trick (i use simplefonts), as well as some obscure chinese ttc2ttf program i found on the web. with envy code r, i have no idea. mtxrun --script fonts --list --all --pattern="envy*" yields: envycoder envycoder /home/phil/.fonts/Envy Code R 7/Envy Code R.ttf envycoderbold envycoderbold /home/phil/.fonts/Envy Code R 7/Envy Code R Bold.ttf envycoderitalic envycoderitalic /home/phil/.fonts/Envy Code R 7/Envy Code R Italic.ttf envycodernormal envycoderitalic /home/phil/.fonts/Envy Code R 7/Envy Code R Italic.ttf you can see the problem. how can i circumvent it? thanks, phil

Perhaps Taco could find time to explore this?? Recently MikTeX enabled ConTeXt using Luatex .60. I love ConteXt and was using it UNTIL MiKTeX stopped support in version 2.8. I try to process a ConteXt file now using: Windows 7, Winedt 6.0 and MikTeX 2.9... I changed to MKIV within MikTeK and luatex tryies to process a TIK test file instead of my master.tex file. Could anyone please advise me on how to get this working? I reallly NEED to use ConTeXt again to continue to publish my research correctly Thanks Barney Schwartz

Is the chart module broken?

In the past I have used the chart module for a little flow chart in a presentation. I wanted to make again flow charts. But I did not get it working. I just compiled my old version again, but this does not work also. The chart is drawn, but the boxes and lines are invisible. That is not very usefull. What could be the problem? Hi Wolfgang, With MkIV blocks are hidden by default while MkII prints them, add \keepblocks[Block] to your document and the blocks will appear. Using \keepblocks worked thanks. Unfortunately, now the \reset command doesn't seem to work in mkiv (see attachment), but's ok in mkii.
