Hi Hans, the latest beta is looking for files ! I can't find file `/mnt/shared/context/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/base/symb-mis.tex'. and ! I can't find file `/mnt/shared/context/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/base/symb-nav.tex'. only symb-mis.mki(i|v) and symb-nav.mki(i|v) are present. All best Thomas

writebetweenlist regression (mkiv)

Hello there. Currently \writebetweenlist doesn't work as advised. It inserts the argument before the last entry of the list. The minimal example is provided by the reference itself. http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Reference/en/writebetweenlist The rule is correctly inserted at http://live.contextgarden.net/ and in the ConTeXt shipped with TeXlive 2010 (2010.05.24), but not with the current beta and the 2010.07.30 version. mkii works fine. How about a forum

Hi everybody, I am trying to get into Context again. The documentation seems to be somewhat better than one year ago (my last attempt) but still very suboptimal. Many information (as well on Contextgarden as on Pragma) is outdated, for example, the xml document on Pragma is dated 2001, the "first document" on the context wiki does not mention mkiv (ok, at least now there is a hint that something should be done about that). For a newbie like me, the best chance of information seems to be the mailing-list, where one can find a lot of gems. After spending this cold and snowy sunday afternoon with the mailing-list (and i got no further than to september 2010) I am wondering why there ist no forum for Context. I spend a lot of time getting into new themes, and I always like the functions of forums. I think in a forum the acces to the relavant information could be very quicklier than in a Mailing-List - which is in my opinion a relict of the information possibilities of the 1990 (last century, only a minute away from the middle ages :-). Dont get me wrong, I like the unbelievable support which is done on the mailing-list, but i think today there could be more efficient possibilities. Any suggestions on that? Thanks, Achim

xml: test for attribute

Hi all, I thought I had done this and it was easy, but I can't find a solution: I want to test whether a xml tag has an attribute and vary the typeset content accordingly. There used to be \xmldoifelseempty, but that has been commented out (lxml-ini.mkiv). What else could I use? Proposal for math mappings

This is a proposal for a new way of selecting math mappings in MkIV. I want to get input from other math users whether this syntax would take care of all scenarios or not. There are five different ranges in mathematics: - digits (0..9) - lower case Latin (abc..z) - upper case Latin (ABC..Z) - lower case Greek (αβγ..ζ) - upper case Greek (ΑΒΓ..Z) A user may want to control what each range is mapped to. So, I suggest a setup command \setupmathmappings [ digits={style,alternative}, lclatin={style,alternative}, uclatin={style,alternative}, lcgreek={style,alternative}, ucgreek={style,alternative}, ] where the options for style are normal, bold while the options for alternative are normal, italic, sans, sansitalic, blackboard, script This command will the mappings for each range. **NOTE**: All combinations are not valid. A companion command \definemathmappings [whatever] [....] can be used to define multiple mappings. These mappings can be used by \setupmathmappings[whatever] (An alternative is that these mappings are activated using \whatever ...) For example, we can define a command to typeset vectors using \definemathmappings [vectors] [ digits={bold,normal}, lclatin={bold,normal}, uclatin={bold,normal}, lcgreek={bold,normal}, ucgreek={bold,normal}] \def\VEC{\groupedcommand{\setupmathmappings[vector]}{}} If later, we want to represent vectors as sans serif, we can use \definemathmappings [vectors] [ digits={normal,sans}, lclatin={normal,sans}, uclatin={normal,sans}, lcgreek={normal,sans}, ucgreek={normal,sans}] This interface makes it easy to switch math fonts for disiplines that want different style for different alphabet ranges. It is relatively easy to implement the above interface. All we need is some bookkeeping to set the right attributes. The default math mapping commands can be reimplmeneted using \definemappings. Before implementing this, I want to ask the opinion of other math users. Would the above interface take care of different use cases, or is it missing something? Finally, I am not too happy with the syntax. There are only a few ConTeXt commands in which the keys take a pair of values. Another option is to allow all 12 valid options normal, italic, sans, sansitalic, blackboard, script, bold, bolditlaic, boldsans, boldsansitalic, boldblackboard, boldscript with the variants sansitalic-italicsans, boldsans-sansbold, etc. as synonmyms. Hello everyone. I am new to ConTeXt, but a frequent LaTeX user. I have got ConTeXt to compile simple text documents, and want to try to use the hvdm-exm.tex package (or module?) from http://tlcontrib.metatex.org/ When I try to load it with \usemodule I get the error module hvdm-exm not found I am using TeX Live 2010 on Mac OS X 10.6.4. footnotes

Hello! Nearly one year ago I posted a question about alignment of footnote-numbers to the list. I then was occupied by other projects, so I now want to catch up and thank you for your replies.I am now again trying to make some work using Context. At first, I have to state that I am impressed about the advancement of Context. But I still have some problems with footnotes: 1. My annoying alignment problem. We now have headalign=flushright, that is the right direction, but not sufficient. What I additionally need is that the width of the number-box is determined by the broadest number on the page, ie I need to have 1 2 3 ... but on the other page: ~8 ~9 10 of course the same with 99 and 100 and so on. In an ideal world, the indent of the footnote-text would also change, but for the moment I could live with an equal indent for all pages having only the alignment of the notes change. I then did some research, read the mail-list etc. What I found on the list was a short message about \doifnoteonsamepageelse, I thougt it could be a starting-point. But trying the given example \starttext \dorecurse {100} { test \footnote{\doifnoteonsamepageelse[footnote]{ibidem}{aaa}} } \stoptext gave me 100 nice little notes, all containing aaa, which was not what I had expected... I then wanted to figure out a little more what was happening, tried to enable tracking with \enabletrackers[structure.notes], but could not find any of the expected messages in the log? What is going on? Because this problem is a real show stopper for me, I hope you can help me getting a solution. 2. The second, but not equal important problem is multicolum footnotes. It seems only to work with very short footnotes, in my example \setupnote[footnote][n=2, columndistance=12pt] \starttext This is just for \footnote{note1} testing This is just for \footnote{note1} testing This is just for \footnote{note1} testing This is just for \footnote{note1} testing This is just for \footnote{This is a very long note which will cover multiple lines. HI All Contexters out there! I'm a Guy from sweden who will appreciate a possible solution to following problem. I'm interested in to do a personalized itemlist with a symbol created in metapost. I did following as an alternative solution and it worked as I wanted but If I run this example the linebreak comes in to the next column(third item), which is not what I want. Hello all, I have just noticed that \SetTableToWidth does not work in MKIV. Bug in fontswitching

Hi, There seems to be a bug in the font switching mechanism. When using the fonts at small sizes up to 12pt everything is fine. However I detected while developing a title page, that larger sizes will not be honored. I.e. that the font where it is switched to is not loaded at all. See attached minimal example. bib problems

All, I've begun summarizing the bibliography problems. Could you all see if your particular problem is mentioned here? If I missed something, please send your test files to the list or to me, please use the sample.bib which is now included in the minimals, and please make the test cases as short as possible. Hans and Taco, one general remark: one thing that is confusing is that the key/value pair "criterium=XXX" is present for the \setuppublications and for the \setuppublicationlist and for the \placepublications command, yet seems to do slightly different things in each. Maybe that's a place where the interface should be changed? Here's what I have so far: % Example 1, posted in a slightly different form by "Curiouslearn" on % 2010-11-25: Hagen 2010c is not quoted and should not be in the list of % references. On 2010-11-26, Mathieu Boespflug made a further observation on % the original testfile which I can't reproduce because it's too complex. Wolfgang, In MKIV using TABLE: All seems to work well enough UNTIL I use \placetable. I have enormous table that run pages in length. I need them split0 repeat and that works fine until I add: \placetable[here][tab:five]{Descriptive Statistics for Salaried Men \& Women} { . . . . . . . . . } I lose ALL page breaks and the table dissappears off the bottom of the page. I took the following document as a source: http://wiki.contextgarden.net/images/b/b4/Mathalign.pdf (Btw: Aditya, why isn't the latest version also on http://dl.contextgarden.net/myway/mathalign.pdf?) Section 4.2 says one thing and does the other ... I want to have my equations numbered as a_1 = (1,0,0) (1a) a_2 = (0,1,0) (1b) a_3 = (0,0,1) (1c) and then reference them as equation (1). The example from Aditya's document says the following: \placesubformula \startformula \startalign \NC a_1 x + b_1 y \NC = c_1 \NR[+][a] \NC a_2 x + b_2 y \NC = c_2 \NR[+][b] \stopalign \stopformula But if I try that in MKII, I get (0a) and (0b), while if I try that in MKIV, I get (1) and (2). How do I get (1a) and (1b) with both MKII and MKIV? Mojca (I'm asking about MKII since I have a completely different problem with every new MKIV version released and I really need to finish that document even if MKIV crashes or a nuclear war starts ... :) :) :)

Unwanted spaces removing

Hello ConTeXist, For some reason I need to use \placefigure environment in such a way that no space are before and after this environment (eg space for image caption under image). I want to hit as a result of using \externalfigure separately only. Can this be arranged? I tried \removelastskip, \removeunwantedspaces etc, but without success. Thanks Jaroslav. Dear typescript experts, in an earlier Email I reported, that the font switches did not work in math mode. E.g., $\bf a=\alpha$ $\bi a=\alpha$ did not display bold math. It turned out that this happens when I invoke \definefontalternative. In some countries it is custom to stretch the space after a period. ... One can however change this spacing \setupspacing[...] ...broad packed if this argument is set as 'broad', what is the exact space? Let's say I want two spaces after the period, how to set this?

Widgets color option not working with Mark IV

Hi The color option in setupfield for widgets is ignored and always gives me black text with Mark IV (see: MarkIV.pdf compiled with a recent ConTeXt minimals). The attached example (widgets.tex) with Mark II however makes the correct color, in this case red, as you can see in (MarkII.pdf) compiled on live.contextgarden.net (aka with Mark II). Hi, I have a set of specifications for a document and I am having some problems implementing it. I am using MKIV from TeX Live 2010. I have some difficulty with these requirements in particular: 1) title: 17pt, boldface, capital letters; 12pt spacing before and 3pt spacing after the title; Now I use \setuphead[title][align=middle,style={\bfd\cap},before={},after={}] How can I ensure that the font size is exactly 17pt? How to I specify precise vertical spacing? 3) All § must be indented 1.25cm; \setupindenting[1.25cm,yes,first] But the first § of each Section is not indented. 4) footnote symbol: * I use \setupnote[footnote][numberconversion=set 3] but I get stars instead of asterisks. bug in TABLE when there is a complex head

Hi Developers, Enclosed is a piece of code that demonstrates a bug in the NaturalTable environment when using a complex head in a multipage case. If you run the following code you will notice that not only does the head get repeated but also the first row of the body of the table. The cause appears to be [nr=2] in the head. Chart module: comment not visible!?

Hi, I wanted to try the chart module to build some flow diagrams, and tried the example (digital signal processing!) at contextgarden. Unfortunately, the text inside the rectangular shapes shows up properly, but no sign of any comments visible in the generated pdf-file! I use ConTeXt ver: 2008.05.21 15:21 MKII together with pdfTeXk, Version 3.1415926-1.40.9 (Web2C 7.5.7). Any help will be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance! Regards, Gerard Verhaag

Hello, just two notices - 1) When searching for some learning stuff, I found the cont-enp.pdf/12.11.2001 (http://www.pragma-ade.com/show-man-9.htm) which "... is the big reference manual, the one that is supposed to cover the whole of CONTEXT.". Some time ago, I downloaded the contextref.pdf/8.10.2010 (http://pmrb.free.fr/contextref.pdf) whose content is near to that of cont-enp.pdf. Probably just one of both documents is supposed to be the FINAL Ctx manual - and this [only] one should be available for download at both sites. 2) Fonts: wiki refers to http://context.aanhet.net/svn/contextman/context-reference/en/co-fonts.pdf (18.11.2009?), whilst the http://www.pragma-ade.com/general/manuals/mfonts.pdf (21.11.2005) is a cca twice wider (and newer?) document. Furthermore, the former document has some links broken (e.g. "(see section ??)" on the page 5 on the first line) and it would be nice if the links were INTERACTIVE (e.g. "(see section <1.5>" to jump to the section 1.5 of the document). Would it be possible to make links in the "mfonts.pdf" interactive ("jumpable"), even in the print version of the document, e.g. in TOC? Probably just one of both documents is supposed to explain deeply the stuff about fonts; this [only] one should be refered and available for download. Friendly regards, Lukas

substitute glyphs from another font

Hi again, the font I want to use keeps, despite its being otf, small caps and text figures in a separate file, not as features. I’m fine with the caps but I really need text figures as default and a switch to lining figures for the occasional table. Is there a way for typeface A to globally substitute the glyphs for R"09" with their aequivalents from typeface B? (I tried making numbers active but this messes things up royally. Modifying the font is not an option either. Also, some threads[*] on the ml seem to indicate that this is possible but predominantly done with math fonts.) Any solution would be appreciated no matter how hackish it might turn out. contextref vs. cont-enp; co-fonts (retry)

Hello, just two notices - 1) When searching for some learning stuff, I found the cont-enp.pdf/12.11.2001 (http://www.pragma-ade.com/show-man-9.htm) which "... is the big reference manual, the one that is supposed to cover the whole of CONTEXT.". Some time ago, I downloaded the contextref.pdf/8.10.2010 (http://pmrb.free.fr/contextref.pdf) whose content is near to that of cont-enp.pdf. Probably just one of both documents is supposed to be the FINAL Ctx manual - and this [only] one should be available for download at both sites. 2) Fonts: wiki refers to http://context.aanhet.net/svn/contextman/context-reference/en/co-fonts.pdf (18.11.2009?), whilst the http://www.pragma-ade.com/general/manuals/mfonts.pdf (21.11.2005) is a cca twice wider (and newer?) document. Furthermore, the former document has some links broken (e.g. "(see section ??)" on the page 5 on the first line) and it would be nice if the links were INTERACTIVE (e.g. "(see section <1.5>" to jump to the section 1.5 of the document). Would it be possible to make links in the "mfonts.pdf" interactive ("jumpable"), even in the print version of the document, e.g. in TOC? Chart comment not rendering!

Hi, I wanted to try the chart module to build some flow diagrams, and tried the example (digital signal processing!) at contextgarden. Unfortunately, the text inside the rectangular shapes shows up properly, but no sign of any comments visible in the generated pdf-file! As soon the tab paramter is set and a tabulator is used in the text, ConTeXt breaks with following error message: ! Hi! Color is not the only place where TikZ treats "!" in a special way. For example, in TikZ/LaTeX you can say: \coordinate (A) at (0, 0); \coordinate (B) at (1, 0); \coordinate (C) at ($ (A)!.3!(B) $); % z.C = .3[z.A, z.B] in MetaPost \coordinate (D) at (2, 1); \coordinate (E) at ($ (A)!(B)!(D) $); % projection of (B) to (A)--(D). This code fails in ConTeXt because "!" is made a "normal" character.

Another indenting problem

Hi all, it took me a while to track this down. It seems that if one uses \in[…] and \footnote{…} in the same paragraph the following \noindentation-command is ignored. Here is an example: \setupindenting[big,yes] \setupdelimitedtext[blockquote][before=\noindentation] \starttext \showframe[text][text] \startbuffer \startblockquote Is this paragraph indented? It should not! Is this paragraph indented? Hi all, pardon my ignorance, but how can I define custom colors for pretty printing xml in current mkiv? I tried defining a palet, I tried defining the usual colors prettyone etc., but to no avail. And, on a related note: are the files pret-lua.lua pret-mp.lua pret-tex.lua pret-xml.lua no longer part of mkiv? What has replaced them? I attach an example which works with mkii and with my older installation of mkiv (2010.10.22 16:46) but not with the current beta (2010.12.02 08:51).
