Downloading long urls

Hi, While downloading urls, context santizes the filename but does not check the length of the url. So, one can end up with a situation where the filename is too long for the operating system to handle. Problem with ownnumber

Hi all, I want to have my headings numbered via ownnumber, and they sometimes should include a dot. Everything works fine except when the ownnumber is numeric. Endnote-problem

Dear list, While preparing a contribution for a conference proceedings I encountered a weird problem that I don't know how to tackle: First, the editor wants endnotes, no footnotes. So I collected all "footnotes" in a separate section at the end (\subject{Notes} \placefootnotes). That works in principle. The paper contains several longish quotations in both the original language and in English translation. The editor wants the original text in the endnotes. So I put them there, in blockquotes. Works too, in principle. However, this results in more than one page of notes. But here ConTeXt, neither mkii nor mkiv, does not insert a page break. Instead it tries to place everything on one page, ignoring the layoout below the header. The result is that only half of the notes turn up in the pdf. The rest is cut off. After the truncated list of notes there follows an empty page. What can I do about it? Thanks in advance for any help. Regards, Robert Blackstone

mkii broken in latest beta?

Hi all, am I the only one having this problem? On OS X, the latest beta ver: 2011.01.18 19:34 MKII fmt: 2011.1.21 breaks with any and every input, even a simple \starttext hello world \stoptext, with this error: systems : no file 'cont-sys.tex', using 'cont-sys.rme' instead ) ) (\end occurred inside a group at level 1) ### simple group (level 1) entered at line 3 ({) ### bottom level Output written on test.dvi (1 page, 396 bytes). Transcript written on test.log. I even installed a new minimal tree into an empty directory, still the same problem. Anyone else seeing this? All best Thomas

Hi all, I have some setups like: \setupfootnotes[textstyle=\plf] or \setupitemize[style=\plf] where \plf is defined as: \definefontfeature[plf][default] [pnum=yes,lnum=yes] \def\plf{\groupedcommand{\setfontfeature{plf}}{}} With the newest beta this setup fails. For footnotes one can use textcommand=\plf\high, but there is no symcommand for item groups. Asides from the old style=\setff{…} behaviour was very convenient, is there a work around? escape in verbatim text eats line breaks

Hi list, there seems to be something wrong with the "escape" mechanism in verbatim. Line breaks before escaped code are ignored. Hi Thomas, I had to do some work with regard to this issue recently. What was mentioned on this list, is, that \fontchar is a command which will stay. \setupbodyfont[Myfont,rm,12pt] \definesymbol[Q.alt] [\fontchar{Q.alt}] \def\Qa{\symbol[Q.alt]} The easiest way to get a stable environment is to use the char-names from the font. Translating PDF-files

Properly not really a ConTeXt question, but maybe nows the answer. Someone asked me how to convert a PDF to XML and back. The reasons is that he has a PDF in English, but he likes to have it also in Russian. His idea is to convert the PDF file to XML, translate the XML file with GoogleTranslate and convert the translated XML file to PDF. He asked me how to do this. Of-course it does not have to be a XML file, if GoogleTranslate can work with a TEX file, there is no reason not to do it. Does anyone know how to do this, or has pointers about how to do this? -- Cecil Westerhof

Hi, I did a rather huge update step from my working context 2010.09.29 to the actual beta. I noted that \getscaledglyph doesn’t work anymore. I use it a lot for symbol insertions like this: \definefontsynonym [ArialU] [name:ArialUnicodeMS] \definesymbol [Diameter] [\getscaledglyph{1.5}{ArialU}{\char"2300}] \def\Diam{\symbol[Diameter]} \starttext hello \Diam\ goodbye \stoptext ( \getglyph seems to work as usual: \definesymbol [Diameter] [\tfb\getglyph{ArialU}{\char"2300}] ) Should I better change my definitions or is it just a bug? \hangaround in xml mkiv

Dear All, I am processing a docbook xml file, which works great (thanks to Wolfgang's introduction to TEI). I have some images and I want the text before and after them to wrap around. This can be achieved through the command \starthangaround .. \stoparound. Since the text that is to wrap around must be put between commands, I cannot attach the image to the figure/graphic tags that are within that text. The figure tag does not allow the para tag to be inserted, nor do other approprate media tags. Instead I attached them to the attribute 'role' of the para tag: <para role="dolce1">abcdef abcef</para> In the environment file I specified this: \xmlsetsetup{#1}{//para[@role]}{xml:chapter:para:role} The hangaround environment is put in the accompanying startxmlsetups: \startxmlsetups xml:chapter:para:role \starthangaround{\externalfigure[\xmlatt{#1}{role}]} \xmlflush{#1} \stophangaround \stopxmlsetups I also added an \xmlflush, assuming that the text itself is processed there. In a rough sense this works. There is a white angle in the text for the image. However, the image itself slides away. I am not sure what is going wrong. Has anybody got a clue? Thanks! new tikz terminal for gnuplot

Dear gnuplot lovers, Peter Hedwig is soon going to submit a patch to gnuplot that fully supports ConTeXt via TikZ output. Its advantage over ConTeXt terminal is that one won't need to recompile gnuplot in order to be able to use it (the gnuplot team at least accepted TikZ terminal if they didn't accept the one for ConTeXt) which is great news. I need to fix some tiny bits before I upload a new version to ConTeXt modules (however the files are here: https://github.com/mojca/context-gnuplot) I can also commit changes done by Peter to https://github.com/mojca/gnuplot if they won't be added any time soon (but if anyone else wants to test it, feel free to ask for the files). An example of usage follows below. Here's his message (the comment about TeX Live is related to the long-standing bug in TikZ for ConTeXt; I'm just thinking about uploading a patch for TikZ to TLContrib ...): I am sorry, that it stalled a bit, but I worked on it secretly ;) But now I think it is time to release what is done so far to anyone who is willing to test it. Conditional cross references to floats

Hi all, I wonder if it is already possible to perform the following task: I have to typeset documents that contain many pictures of various sizes. Due to lack of space, some may pictures may not appear on the page on which they are discussed. And also in the course of revising the document, adding text may push them to another page. Therefore I always refer to every picture with \in and \at. On the other hand, changing or deleting text may unexpectedly land them on the correct page. So sometimes it may happen that the reader, for instance on page 23, will be referred to a figure on page 23, which looks rather silly. Is there a trick to let ConTeXt automatically omit the reference when the picture happens to appear on the correct page (or change the reference to « on this page »). In other words, can one make a sort of conditional reference that only mentions the page if it is not the present page? Would this perhaps be something that can be coded in Lua? (I saw a similar question on this list in june 2010, and the provisional solution that was suggested, but apparently did not work.) Incidentally, the address for the archive seems not to be correct (and untrusted). (Message: The requested URL https://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contextrev/ was not found on this server.) Is it possible to set up the table of contents in a way that entries of some level get typeset continiously? \startquotation, grid and footnote

Hello, I have to typeset paragraphed quotations in a smaller font (and maybe a smaller baselineskip, but this is not necessary) and with larger margins. However, after the quotation, the main text has to be on the grid again. Footnotes seem to be a bigger problem. When using the linecorrection mechanism (either with \start|\stoplinecorrection and with \placeongrid), the footnotetexts don't get typeset at all. They seem to get lost within the linecorrection environment. catcode problems (mkiv)

Hi, I have some problems with catcode handling in lua and tex. Source of the problem is (aside from my limited knowledge) a XML based line of text that can contain any printable character. From this source line I create one modified text line for the tex side (named 'textext') and one unmodified text line for the lua side (named 'luatext'). The tex side actually prints the text and the lua side is used to create some bitmap based background graphics. The XSLT output is something like this (saved in a *.tex file) ... \ctxlua{myluacode.foo{ luatext = [[Test |%_^~$#{}±©®¶°<>& 123]], textext = [[Test \textbar \%\_\textcircumflex \texttilde \$\#\textbraceleft \textbraceright \textpm \copyright \registered ¶\textdegree <>\& 123]], ... }} Two problems still occur. The "%"-sign in (ctx)lua (text is ignored afterwords) and the significant spaces in the tex part (which are eaten up when printed). I tried it with a modified catcodetable, but no success (ugly sideeffects). So my question is: What is the best way to 1. deal with the "%" character in ctxlua? 2. print significant spaces? My current 'solution' for 2. is writing to a tex buffer instead and then using \bgroup\obeyspaces\getbuffer[textext]\egroup If I try to use \obeyspaces in combination with the lua variable 'textext' I can no longer access the variable, as the variable is indexed by a tex macro (lets call it \FOO), which then is interpreted as whatever.["\FOO "].textext ). No solution for 1. yet. As always... any help welcome :-) Peter

Imposition with signatures (pdfpages/psbook emulation -- kind of announce)

Hello there. I deal very often with imposition, useful for zinesters and to create home-made booklets. ConTeXt by itself seems not to manage signatures, i.e., given a text long 200 pages, it should be imposed in smaller booklets of 50 pages each. (Or at least I didn't find anything about it) At the beginning I was using psbook. But this requires a slow processing (pdf -> ps; psbook ; ps -> pdf). Then I found out that pdfpages does the same thing (and better), and started using that. Now that I switched to ConTeXt, I found that I cannot use pdfpages without a latex installation. So I wrote a script and a module to do the same thing without having to install texlive. It uses MkIV and lua. The code is stored at http://gitorious.org/the-anarchist-library-tools/the-anarchist-library-tool… A minimal example and (minimal) documentation is provided. The code does basically 2 things: 1) the module, using the \alibraryflushpages commands, fills the output pdf (not imposed) with white pages, until it reach a “good” number, multiple of 4. The signature is calculated at runtime, so you can specify a minimum or a maximum (depends on your staple, if you can trim the paper, and so on). E.g., if the original pages are 128, no problem, the signature is 64 (16 sheets) and you can impose it without problems. But, if the original pages are 129, the optimal signature is 44, so the module will add 3 pages during the PDF compiling. 2) the perl script (which uses only standard perl libraries) creates a temporary context file, gets the number of signatures provided by the module (or passed as option if only the imposition is required against a pdf without tex sources), and does the actual imposing (the algorithm is taken from the psbook sources (the same used by pdfpages), including the pages in the right order. I'm not a real programmer, so it's a piece of spaghetti code. But seems to work. I'm posting this here because it's aimed to people that use the Minimals only, as TeXLive already ships pdfpages, psbook and pdfpages to do the same thing. (Well, the signature is not calculated on the fly by these tools). *If* there are people interested, I'd like to clean it up, improve it, document it a bit better and so on. Hi, a) this minimal example does not work as expected. The first column is not justified correctly on top. This does not change, even when swapping small, big, medium (e.g. make 1st col medium and 2nd small). Bad interaction between new interpretation of underscore and modules

Hi all, today's beta introduced a really strange problem. Consider two source files: definitions.tex: \startmodule[definitions] \def\lambdax{\lambda_x} \stopmodule[definitions] main.tex: \usemodule[definitions] \starttext blah $\lambdax$ blah. \stoptext This results in the following compile error: ! Undefined control sequence. \lambdax ->\lambda_x l.5 blah $\lambdax $ blah. ? However, if you change "\usemodule[definitions]" into "\input definitions" instead, then there is no compile error! My understanding is that the underscore is a valid character for macro names now outside of math mode, which is what is causing the problem. But I really don't understand what magic is going on in the modules code to trigger this. I would be very interested in an explanation of what is going on. Many thanks, Mathieu

Hello, I have problem. Suppose having t-TypeF.ctx which is to print itself: --- \enableregime[cp1250] \starttext ABC ŽŠČ \typefile[]{t-TypeF.ctx} \stoptext --- The letters "ŽŠČ" to be printed during \typefile are the problem. I get a long error message, where the key message is: l.9 \typefile[]{t-TypeF.ctx} ! String contains an invalid utf-8 sequence. system > error on line 73 in file t-TypeF.ctx: String contains an invalid utf-8 sequence ... l.73 ´┐Ż The file is created with CP 1250 = Windows, Eastern Europe, Czech Republic. So how do I make ctx accept also Czech letters with diacritics like "ŽŠČ"? - I also looked to wiki to \setuptyping, but it doesn't seem to there would be a command which could change this. Replacing a piece of a paper

Hello, I'm trying to handle a special problem. I guess ConTeXt would be useful for this purpose, although its primary function is to typeset. But - I have many drawings - they are black-and-white one-sided PDFs of A1 or A2 size (typical technical drawings). The bottom right area of size 210 x 330 mm should be "deleted" - or over-painted by a white rectangle (or picture or MP code). And next a new PDF of A4 size should be placed on the right bottom area, just on the white ("deleting") area. I wouldn't have problem with batch processing the number of files. But I would need an example how to take the original A2 PDF, place a whitening area on it and then to place a new PDF over it; I'm not experienced enough in "layering" with ConTeXt and I guess this may be the way. Would it be possible to provide a small example of such processing an arbitrary file? I can send a sample A2 or A1 PDF, and also a replacing A4, if necessary. Thank you in advance. Which table environment?

Hello all, I've been playing with the various table environments but I thought I'd seek advice as to which would be the best for my requirements. I need to be able to do the following: - Repeating header row with coloured background and text (I can get this working with TABLE but not tabulate). - Multi-page tables (TABLE and tabulate are fine with these). - Insert images in a cell (TABLE seems to handle this better than tabulate). - Have rows that will split across pages - we will have large pieces of text and images which will end up being taller than the page. (tabulates paragraph support is the right sort of thing) - Start next row on current page. - Include other tables, lists etc in a cell (this is a "nice to have" rather than a "must have") The reason I need these various things is because Word acts this way and I need to produce something similar (until we can argue for a format change). At the moment I'm leaning towards tabulate but I'm having issues with images and the headers. I'm using Mk IV (bonus question: as a newbie, should I just start with IV and ignore II? Or is II better for any particular reason?). Thanks in advance, Felix

Hi, are the delimiters \lgroup and \rgroup supported in MkIV? This \starttext $$\bigg\lgroup\dots\bigg\rgroup$$ \stoptext is ok in MkII (ConTeXt ver: 2011.01.06) but when compiled with MkIV (ConTeXt ver: 2010.07.30 11:35 and ver: 2010.07.30 11:35) the delimiters are not shown. (By the way, the same holds true for \rmoustache and \lmoustache.) Am I missing something? Searching the list archive and the contextgarden unfortunately didn't bring up in anything. Hi, I uploaded a new beta: The character definitions have been updated (esp math, thanks to Aditya). After some testing by Wolfgang the decision was made to permit _ in macronames in modules. So, the following works: \unprotect \def\test_test_test#1#2{#1+#2=whatever} \test_test_test{1}{2} \protect In principle we can also support ^. The mkiv code base no longer uses _ and ^ in math in modules and those who write modules should avoid them as well. So, when writing macros in unprotected mode, one schould use: $x\normalsuperscript2\normalsubscript n$ Taco and I think that we can safely switch to \nonknuthmode in mkiv so this might happen soon (which means that _ and ^ become normal characters in text mode). Actually, being permanently in \nonknuthmode would permit _ and ^ in modules again. We could even make _ and ^ always letters outside math in which case \text_test etc would become possible everywhere but that needs some more consideration. In that case \def\make_subscript#1#2{\mathematics{#1_{#2}}} \make_subscript{x}{2} becomes valid everywhere. We can discuss this in detail at the dev list. Hello all, Often I include external PDF files into PDF document generated by ConTeXt. When I create a PDF document containing text in Scribus (or other application) and then I put it to my PDF file (generating by ConTeXt), then in final PDF document are unreadable characters. External figures in section headings

Hello all, I need to have an image as part of my section headings. I've read through an example in the "It's in the details" manual and came up with the following example: \definelayer[chapterstart][width=\paperwidth,height=\paperheight] \definelayerpreset[lefttop][corner={left,top},location={right,bottom}] \setlayer[chapterstart][preset=lefttop]{\externalfigure[hacker.jpg]} \setuphead[chapter][before={\setupbackgrounds[page][background=chapterstart]}] \starttext \chapter{First chapter} \chapter{Second chapter} \stoptext This works very well for the first chapter: the picture is inserted behind the text as I want but nothing is inserted behind the second chapter heading. I've been able to add extra details to the setuphead; these are repeated but the picture is not. Can anyone see what I'm doing wrong? I get the same behaviour whether I use version II or IV. Hello, I'd need to pass a variable to Ctx and to retrieve it inside a compiled document - via Ctx itself and also by Lua. Something like modes; but modes allow just to check whether they are on or off. Dear ConTeXt developpers, While trying to use mkiv, I noticed that the output of the "\div" macro in math mode is not the division symbol as I was expecting but the "div" text. Hi there, I'm pretty new to ConTeXt and stumbled upon a problem when trying to use Xfig: I'm trying to create figures with xfig and including them in my ConTeXt document. I would export them as PDF, but unfortunately I have TeX math inside the figure and I'd like to have native fonts. I used to use a combinded LaTeX/PDF export in the past with LaTeX. Is there any practical solution to this? Regards, Florian.

What has happened to externalfigure command?

Hi, I'm struggling to get an older ConTeXt file that worked well under TeXLive 2008, but not any more with ConTeXt minimals! I've installed the ConTeXt minimals (Mark IV!) (MTXrun | current version: 2010.07.30 11:35) recently. I've a file someplot.1 in a directory called /home/somewhere. The ConTeXt source file contains the command: \setupexternalfigures [directory={/home/somewhere}] in the preamble. The image file is called using: \leftaligned{\externalfigure[someplot.1][scale=100]} But no image is presented in the generated pdf-file! However, all jpg-type of images that I use in the document - using similar commands - are all rendered correctly! What's wrong? Anybody any idea? Regards, Gerard Verhaag

How to get numbered cases'ed equations ?

Hi list, How can I get a numbered equation when using cases in MkIV? The "hack" proposed by Aditya in [1] doesn't work as it uses macros that no longer exist (\makesesctionnumber and others). The reference doesn't even get recorded. I precise that I don't want (well, don't need) the sub numbering per-line, just a regular number would do. xml-processing: missing or ungrouped '='

Hi all a problem with processing XML data (maybe a lack of knowledge). If in the example below I set the chapter-attributes directly in \startxmlsetups xml:title (commented out) everything is like I expected. Because I have headings to be treated equally in multiple hierarchies I tried to delegate the processing to splitHeader. But then the processing always complains about a missing or ungrouped '=' in line ... still struggling with footnotes

Hi, for a text background graphic I need the character box sizes of a given string. I managed to collect the needed info (width, height, depth, kerns), but there is still some flaw in the kerning part. For example: "VATo" is printed out (in the shell) as V 12 11 0 *kerning -85721.088 A 10 11 0 *kerning -64487.424 T 10 11 0 *kerning -64487.424 o 7 7 0 The character stands in the first column, followed by width, height and depth (in pixel). The "*kerning" line shows the kerning value (in sp) of the neighbouring character pair. No problem here. MPtoPDF problem

Hallo. Few days ago I migrated to Ubuntu 10.10 (Linux) and last stable ConTeXt minimals (2010.07.30 11:35 MKII) (from very old ConTeXt version). Now I found I can't run mptopdf: Command mptopdf chart.1 just prints chart.1 and an empty line Command mtxrun --script mptopdf chart.1 fails with these complaints: This is pdfTeX, Version 3.1415926-1.40.11 (TeX Live 2010) \write18 enabled. entering extended mode [MP to PDF] (./charts08.1{/home/qasar/programy/context_stable/tex/texmf/fonts/m ap/pdftex/plain/pdftex.map}) [1] !pdfTeX error: pdftex (file lmmi9): Font lmmi9 at 600 not found ==> Fatal error occurred, no output PDF file produced! MPtoPDF 1.4.0 : error while processing tex file And command mtxrun --script mptopdf chart.mp starts to compile something, than reports that it cannot write the log file and asks for another file name, and eventually fails with the same complaints as above. Determining available fonts

\showbodyfont & \showbodyfontenvironment display details about a single font. Which command lists or otherwise identifies fonts available for use on a Tex Live MKII system? I want to find out what fonts have been loaded onto my system. These would most likely be the standard fonts included with the on-line download. updating in texlive

Hi all, a Happy New Year to all of you! Here's a small question: from time to time, as a mental exercise (and because I like a backup), I try to bring my texlive installation up to date. I have copied these relevant files over from my minimal tree: - luatex binary - mtxrun - texmfcnf.lua (with modifications, of course) then unzipped the latest ConTeXt. Everything works - but I get no hyphenation. For a simple test file like: \mainlanguage[en] \starttext \hyphenatedword{philosophically} \stoptext I see in the log file mkiv lua stats : loaded patterns - en::2 but no hyphenation is given. in a run with the minimals, I see: mkiv lua stats : loaded patterns - en::2 mkiv lua stats : language load time - 0.155 seconds , nofpatterns: 1 (the last line is not present in the log from texlive). I don't see anything wrong in cont-en.log, so I wonder how I can find out why the patterns are not applied? All best Thomas

Omega not recognized in asciimath module

Hi, I have a problem in displaying the omega symbols. *xhtml *contains Suppose that <am> S = 20 Omega , T = 41 Omega "and" U =O84 omega </am>. *tex *contains \startxmlsetups xml:am \expanded{\asciimath{\xmltext{#1}{.}}} \stopxmlsetups But the Omega symbol is not rendered in the pdf.
