Dear all, I defined "Example" as following: \defineenumeration[Example] [location=serried, headstyle=bold, command={\framed[height=1.3em]}, text={\ss \white 예제}, prefix=yes, prefixsegments=chapter, way=bychapter, width=broad, number=yes, before={\blank[big]}, after=\blank] The problem is that the bottom of the framed text is aligned just below the center of the following text lines. The vertical center is a little bit higher than that of the following lines. If I use "\inframed", then the top line of the frame is a little bit higher than the center of the following sentence, so there is almost no space between the frame and the texts in the next line. In the manual \inframed makes vertical center alignment, but I can't make it. I'd like to make vertical center alignment framed word and the normal text line which follows. How can I do it? Hello, Here comes a little feature request: it would be nice, if context allowed us to write a file with dependency information, like a C-compiler does for the dependencies of a C-file on the included header files. The best would be, to get such dependencies directly in Makefile syntax. Example: Say you have a main context file "main.tex" that includes an environment file "../env.tex" and a figure "subdir/figure.jpg", then running context --dependencies=main.d main would create "main.pdf" and also "main.d" with this line: main.tex: ../env.tex subdir/figure.jpg -- Peter

With the current solution, I still have the problem that the numbers of \starttheorem and \startproclaim{Theorem} are on the (resp.) left and right side of the text/title and I don't know how to change that. I still find \starttheorem[text={Special Theorem}] (and that is called key-val-input?) the more intuitive, though. Maybe it would be worth considering to enable such inputs - it seems many other \start... \stop... environments allow such key-val-inputs. The annotation module looks good from afar, I just can't find it on contextgarden nor on tlcontrib... Thank you for the quick reply, it is getting quite close. I guess the trick is to define an enumeration for one-off use and use "title=" to fake "text=". The only problem is that the number sits between text and title. So to still be able to use \starttheorem alongside \startproclaim{Theorem}, I would need to know how to either place the number after the "title" or how to place it before the "text". I'd be interested in knowing how to do both. Hi all, I think for the sake of my sanity I am going to stop building prototypes now. I am very grateful to those who have been very helpful along the way, answering what must have seemed like foolish questions. I'd have to say that getting to grips with Context has taken longer than I bargained for, and has not been as smooth as I hoped. But without you, collectively, extreme frustration would have kicked in long ago. I am based in the UK and have a moderate budget to develop some frameworks in which to publish a series of documents that'll be up for being maintained. This will be the third iteration for some of the collection, which have appeared on CD-ROM in a Macromedia shell, then as rich pdfs with an InDesign - Acrobat Pro workflow. Now, maybe, they'll find a final home in Context, at least for the pdf versions. There are two pieces of work, I think, requiring different skill sets, I think. 1) To build some context templates, using modes and layers to give me the ability to produce pdfs of varying 'heft' by switching in and out layers. What people might read on a smartphone / iPad ought to be different to what they might get on a fast desktop / laptop running Acrobat, so permitting embedded swfs. The text is already highly structured and the trick will be to implement a document that automates much of what must be done by hand in InDesign, and to fully exploit the facilities in Context. 2) (This might be some heavy lifting, so may be best thought of separately). To build the wherewithal to allow rich swfs to be placed in the resulting pdfs by Context, at their natural size and at a specified location, and loading in poster frames and directories of assets where these exist (for which you currently have to use Acrobat Pro). It is possible that I could, eventually manage the first, but I'd expect someone with a history of working on Context to do a much more elegant, clean and maintainable job. The second task is will need some cunning coding in Lua, or equivalent, I expect. Anyone interested, please contact me off list, where we can discuss further details. Letter with letterhead

I would like to know how to revert the second and subsequent pages to use a default layout. I have a counter that I'd like to reset \newcounter \nuggetnumber \def \numberofnuggets{0} \definehead [nugget] [section] \setuphead [nugget] [number=yes,page=yes, before=\increment \nuggetnumber, after=\savecurrentvalue \numberofnuggets{\countervalue{nuggetnumber}},] % LO as nugget This counts the number of nuggets.. and seems to work fine. But when it gets to an episode it should reset....so, maybe like this \definehead [episode] [title] \setuphead [episode] [numberstyle=bold, textstyle=cap, number=yes,before=\resetnumber[nuggetnumber]] % may be used But \resetnumber[nuggetnumber], where-ever I put it seems to have no impact. I think the Wiki suggests that it should, and the mailing list back catalogue and the manual shed no light on the matter.... while I am at it, I am equally unsure how to reset the numberofnuggets accumulator, which should also be done on meeting the episode structural element - I'd like to insert a whole chain of commands in the before=...' A question about data types?

Sorry. me again...and I have been all over the wiki, mailing lists and manuals... I have this: \setlayer [progresssteps] % name of the layer [hoffset=904 px, voffset= 28\nuggetnumber px] % placement (from upper left corner of the layer) {\stepstack} % the actual contents of the layer And I am hoping that as I increase nuggetnumber the voffset of the layer will be 28*nuggetnumber I am setting nuggetnumber like this for the moment: \def \nuggetnumber{3} (in the other dev document it is the result of counter, so set dynamically) and this in the text \nuggetnumber which compiles to '3', so I assume the assignment is good to go. varying both nuggetnumber and the scale factor (28) shift the layer up and down, but not in a way that suggests that 28\nuggetnumber is being evaluated as a product (so a scale factor of 7 and a nuggetnumber of 2 do not give the same output as a scale factor of 2 and a nuggetnumber of 7). So I am led to think that there is something in the evaluating that is going wrong - data types / units? (if I hard code in the results I am expecting, say 28 px, 56 px or 84 px then I get exactly what I want... Thanks, as ever (Same result in ConTEXt ii or iv) Ian

breaking up long input into metapost pages

I now have a long input file with many independent sections. For the moment it is processed as follows: \starttext \startTEXpage \startMPcode % variable declarations % macro definitions with drawing code input input_data; \stopMPcode \stopTEXpage \stoptext Now this becomes a bit too large for one page, I tried a Metapost run in luatex but after taking some 12 GB of memory it gave up. The idea is thus to have one contiguous input which at certain points produces a new startTEXpage. That will flush the internal memory I guess and makes long documents possible. I'd rather not split the input_data in seperate files: making a thousand of more files seems no nice prospect to me. Any ideas how to best structure things? I should mention that I have a lot of control over the writing of the input_data. Hans van der Meer

Dear Lutz, After replacing "blblogo.pdf" with a figure file in my system and tested it. Otherwise, it shows a gray rectangle. I got no error and the output is fine.( "Test" and the figure are well shown) I don't know "rev 4090" but here is the version of ConTeXt minimal in my system. ... This is LuaTeX, Version beta-0.65.0-2010121316 \write18 enabled. (testmp.tex ConTeXt ver: 2011.02.25 22:03 MKIV fmt: 2011.3.1 int: english/english ... Silly perhaps, but I am stuck with something that shouldn't be difficult to solve. I want to fill lines with small blocks (\vrule's just 0.2 mm high) and then fit the indivdual lines as tight together as is possible. After some delays, thankfully the book "Fonts in ConTeXt" is now finally available for immediate ordering. "Fonts in ConTeXt" describes how to define and use fonts in ConTeXt MkIV. In this book, for the first time all existing documentation related to fonts has been combined into a single document. In 128 pages, the reader is guided through everything there is to know about fonts in ConTeXt MkIV. The earlier chapters deal with the theory behind the font subsystem of ConTeXt and explain how to use the font switching macros. I am trying to make an e-book with ConTeXt. The word e-book is used in this e-book. ;-} Sometimes e- comes on the end of the line and book at the beginning of the next. Is there a way to circumvent this? I could ofcourse change all occurences with \hbox{e-book} (and the same for e-mail, ...), but I was hoping there is a better solution. -- Cecil Westerhof

Started for myself some learning on colors in ConTeXt. In the manual there is a nice colorpalette shown (section 6, page 141). However, I cannot reproduce this. The following minimal example shows colored texts, but \showcolor[color-name] just produces black boxes with ominous zeroes behind it. What am I missing here? The wiki didn't procure more information then the manual. This comes from the ConTeXt manual (section 4, page 65) \starttext \setuplinespacing[height=1mm] \stoptext It gives an error: ! Undefined control sequence. l.2 \setuplinespacing [height=1mm] ? Two pages earlier there is \starttext \setupinterlinespace[height=2] \stoptext And this works, but I am not sure what the number values for height and depth mean. I guess fractions of the normalbaselineskip, but I could not find it defined in the text there. What doesn't work is for example: \starttext \setupinterlinespace[height=1ex] \stoptext But sounds fairly natural to me. However, the error is: ! No widows and orphans

I do not want to have widows and orphans. Because of this I use: \clubpenalty=10000 \widowpenalty=10000 But this has no effect. Still the last two lines of a paragraph are put on the next page instead of the complete paragraph. I somewhere read about using: setups=*strict so I now have: \setuplayout[ header=0mm, setups=*strict, ] This makes it a little better. Now three lines are put on the other page. Is it possible to get the complete paragraph on the other page? -- Cecil Westerhof

problems with bib

Hi list, until now I used the bib module for my bibliography in a rather large document in MkIV by calling \usemodule[bib]. Today I updated to version 2011.02.25 22:03 and the document does no longer compile. I removed the above line from my document and it ran again, but the "References" section was empty and I got "[[error 1]]" everywhere I used \cite. So I changed \completepublications to \completepublications[criterium=all]. Now I have the complete list of references (I know, I asked for it) but instead I only want to have those references in the list that I cited in the document. Some questions: (1) Is the bib module obsolete? If so, can someone provide me with a small example how to properly make bibliographies now, preferably from a .bib-file? (2) If this is not already answered by the first question: How do I get the references list to display only the cited entries from my bibliography, "[criterium=?]"? (3) What do I have to do to let context find the sample.bib database? I get "I couldn't open database file sample.bib.bib" or "I couldn't open database file sample.bib" in the output depending on whether I added ".bib" or not. Screen document design

Morning all, Quick question. I want to design a screen document at 1024 by 768 pixels, so ideally work in pixels as units, and not mm / cm. I know pdfs are scalable and about \setuppapersize[S6][S6], but I'd prefer to work in pixels (I have swfs / images to embed, and these come in x by y pixels). Anyone have an easy answer? ...nothing I have found in the selection of downloadable documentation or on the wiki suggests that it is possible... Thanks Ian

Labels, offsetting the layout...

Hi all, I should prepare a couple of sticky-labels. The label-sheet however has a top margin of 21 mm as also a bottom margin of 21 mm. At the left and right side there is a margin of 8 mm. The size of the label is 42.3 x 97mm. There are 16 such labels on each sheet. In order to get the prints correct I wanted to move the layout 8 mm to the right and 21 mm down... I had no success to complete this. Could someone enlighten me what I am doing wrong? Comma spacing in math mode

I don't know if anyone feels the same, but I'm not happy with the spacing of commas in math mode (pictures attached). For instance, typesetting H^1(X,F), the comma seems to be closer to the F than to the X. Equal spacing on both sides or setting the comma closer to the X are I guess a matter of taste (inserting a \neghairspace after the X achieves the latter). In any case, I would kind of prefer equal spacing. Also, it seems odd that adding a negative space \neghairspace does not change the length of the total formula - I had expected the modified one to be slightly shorter...? On a related issue, the spacing for lists, e.g. (0,0,...,0), is not satisfactory. LaTeX provides a command \dotsc for dots between commas (and other commands like \dotsm, \dotsi, \dotsb). I don't know if all of these are necessary, but \dotsc and its cousins are not defined in ConTeXt and both using \ldots or just ... give unsatisfactory results. (It is also curious that the spacing after the first comma and the spacing after the last comma in (0,0,...,0) is evidently different...) Personally, I think I favour something approximating (0, 0, ..., 0) and I find \ldots is spaced too widely, ... too closely, and in any case, the spacing of the dots doesn't match with the spacing of the commas. Any second opinions? Best wishes, Severin P.S.: I'm also confused about \colon and : - the latter looks better to me in $i: A \to B$. The spacing for projective coordinates [1:0: ... :0] is wide but still acceptable. The index of a subgroup |G:H| is far too widely spaced, but \colon only gives asymmetrical spacing. The semicolon seems to undergo the same spacing as the comma, with the same problems mentioned above. P.P.S.: \hairspace does not seem to have any effect in math mode, while \neghairspace does. Bug or feature?

Non-stretching or slow-stretching spaces?

I was wondering if there are any kind of spaces which (partly) fix the spacing between characters. For example, typesetting "Chapter 1", I would like to keep the space from stretching at the same rate as the surrounding spaces (just like ck ligatures in old German texts would be prevented from stretching, or the space in do n't (sic) in early 20th century American texts). I currently use "\ " to prevent a line break "~" to prevent extra space after a period \, \; etc. as fractions(?) of the normal space (i.e. they change at the same rate as the normal space when stretched) Are there any other types of spaces I should be aware of? I would be most grateful for any comments, especially concerning the existence of a slow-stretching (or non-stretching) space... Thank you, Severin

\externalfigure can't find svg files in the path specified by \setupexternalfigures

Hi, If I put the Dna-SNP.svg file in the current directory, it works fine: \starttext %\setupexternalfigures[directory=figure] \externalfigure[Dna-SNP.svg] \externalfigure[Dna-SNP.png] \stoptext If I put the Dna-SNP.svg file in the figure subdirectory, then it broke: \starttext %\setupexternalfigures[directory=figure] \externalfigure[Dna-SNP.svg] %\externalfigure[Dna-SNP.png] \stoptext And If I convert the Dna-SNP.svg in the figure subdirectory into Dna-SNP.png, and comment the .svg line, while uncomment the .png line, it works again. So the problem is that \externalfigure can't find svg files in the path specified by \setupexternalfigures. Dna-SNP.svg is attached in case somebody want to test it.

how to keep inmargin texts above the base of the page

Hello. If I have a lot of inmargin or margintext, they will extend into the base of the page (defined by bottomspace). Is there a way to remedy this by some setup? This was compiled with xetex option b/c inmargin stack doesn't fully work in mkiv. defined symbols - question/feature suggestion

Hi Hans, in symb-mis.mkiv you define most symbols with \mathematics. I don't know why you take these symbols from the math font. Just in case the symbol does not exist in the regular font, I would guess. Problem is only, that you will loose most symbols when switching the math font to something else than computer-modern (I tested with euler and cambria). BTW: I wonder how many contexters use modern for math... Anyway it appears most fonts have geometric shapes and common symbols and dingbats. So I end up redefining the symbols: \definesymbol [bullet] [\textbullet] \definesymbol [dash] [--] \definesymbol [star] [\char"2734] \definesymbol [triangle] [\char"25B6] \definesymbol [square] [\char"25A0] \definesymbol [diamond] [\char"25C6] \definesymbol [checkmark] [\char"2713] Also it looks nicer when you use item symbols matching the text font. Maybe you would consider this and prefer symbols from the text font rather than those from the math font and keep \mathematics only as fall back should the glyph be unavailable. Cheers, Florian

Maybe the ConTeXt community can be of assistance to the LuaTeX bunch ... As a new LuaTeX user, I came across the following problem: Using Lua(La)TeX, customized kerning of letter pairs (via the FeatureFile capability of fontspec) is ignored when it coincides with a possible hyphenation of a word (e.g. between 'f' and 'h' in German words like 'aufhalten'; see first minimal example below). Ulrike Fischer was so kind to point out two things (http://tug.org/pipermail/luatex/2011-February/002569.html) First, the problem seems to be the break points between the adjusted kerning pairs. Second, ConTeXt seems to handle this case correctly (see second minimal example below; feature file bonum.fea from first example required). I am no expert in neither LuaTeX nor context, but Ulrike suggested I post here and ask if the (typographically correct) ConTeXt behavior or solution can be reproduced with Lua(La)TeX. If you uncomment it again there are 41 lines! \placefigure[top,nonumber]{}{\externalfigure[dummy]} \page \dorecurse{30}{line \recurselevel\par} \blank[medium,small] \dostepwiserecurse{31}{50}{1}{line \recurselevel\par} \stoptext It's really a problem if compiling a component file which ends up with another page breaking than the corresponding product file. Hello, Khaled had another idea to manipulate (reencode) fonts: He suggested to put a function in fonts.trigger. (Example below). I have some questions regarding this example: 1. Is there a basic flaw in the idea? 2. Is the interface more or less stable or will it probably change in the future? If not 3. which tables/values in tfmdata must be copied/reassigned beside the indices information? (There seem to be quite a lot informations more than once in tfmdata. E.g. I find the boundingbox in two places (descriptions and shared.otfdata.glyphs)). 4. Which tables/values must be created if I try to move a char to a place which is currently empty (like the "z" in the example)? 5. What is the recommanded lua-code to copy/reassign/remap the tables? ".mkiv-tmp" -- maybe just .tmp if trace_temp_files and not tempfiles[name] then report_tempfiles("registering temporary file: %s",name) end tempfiles[name] = true return name end Can you remove the first line of this function? (That is, do not modify the name at all). This will allow me to use this functionality to remove temporary files created by t-filter and t-vim. These files, do not end in .mkiv-tmp or .tmp. I have a Dutch document where I use the word genereren. Because it is on the end of the line ge- is put on the end and nereren is put on the beginning of the next line. I find this quit ugly. increase space on the left of pages included using \copypages

Hello, I am trying to use the \copypages command to include a pdf file, say file3pages.pdf with three pages in my context document. First, I issued the command: \copypages[file3pages.pdf] The pages from file3pages.pdf are too close to the left margin. There is not enough white space on the left whereas, there is a lot of space on the right of the included pages. So, I tried \hskip 0.5in \copypages[file3pages.pdf] This creates appropriate space on the left of the included pages, but only for the first page of file3pages.pdf. The second and third pages of file3pages.pdf are the same as before (too close to the left margin). How can I apply \hskip 0.5in to each of the pages included from the file3pages.pdf. Can someone please suggest if there is a better way to increase the space on the left. Please note that the included pages do not respect the margins I have set for the document. Thanks a lot.

Hi list! I have to create the proceedings of a conference. I'm collecting A4 pdfs (from word/latex templates), and I have to stick them together, adding cover, toc etc Now, I've used copypages. The fact is that the included pdfs do not bleed over all the page, their inclusion seems to depend on some dimension I'm not able to control via setuplayout. So, I tested startpagefigure. Works fine but I can include (well, I'm able to) a single page. More, it seems that numbers of page disappear (while I need them) Any hints? Thanks a lot -a-

I am trying to stretch two lines of text to the same width for use as a chapter head. I have two major problems: 1. The second line of text is appended to the end of the first line instead of being placed below it. 2. I get errors when using #1 and #2 as values, i.e {Chapter #1} and {#2}. Hi all, this must be easy, but I don't find the solution. Given an xml structure like this: <X> <A>dog</A> <A>cat</A> <A>mouse</A> </X> which \xmlfilter expression do I need to get the first <A> element which has a subelement ? I.e., the filter should only return "cat," not "dog" or "mouse." There can be 0 or more elements without before and after the one I want to retrieve. Sorry if this is elementary, but I looked at xml-mkiv.pdf and mk.pdf and couldn't find an answer. Thanks Thomas

Simplefonts

Dear Wolfgang, The file from which the extract is taken worked fine a few months ago. I have since updated minimals and also simplefonts but I now have a problem. This update was today. The main font is typeset as Gentium Basic as requested but the Gaelic font is set as a roman italic. The switch to Mionchló does not happen. If I reverse the two fonts and make the Mionchló the main font it typesets correctly as the Gaelic font but the switch in this case to Gentium Basic gives the same roman italic. I have not changed the file since it worked correctly. Unexpected indentation

Hi, getting unexpected o/p with the following (both locally and on http://live.contextgarden.net/: It took me a while to come across the second incantation to get my desired o/p but I would be obliged if anyone would care to comment on why the first does not work as (I) expected. The only letter ("g") I have left in the logo has two spaces that I want to cut out. I can't make a single path out of it so that it doesn't go through the entire letter, so what to do in this case?
