\completepublications without criterium gives no publications at all?

I just encountered a problem when running the following, using the sample.bib given in the wiki (http://wiki.contextgarden.net/sample_bib) The list of References is emtpy. If I added the argument "[criterium=text]" to \completepublications, it produces the correct result (it prints out the list of references), but if I put that as an additional parameter in setuppublications as "\setuppublications[alternative=apa,criterium=text]", again: no list of references. Is this a bug? or maybe I haven't used the correct setup? Hey all, the “deo” hyphenation does not appear to be accessible anymore. ··8<····························································· %\mainlanguage [deo] % neither of \language [deo] % these two works \starttext Fluß, Guß, Stuß. \stoptext ··8<····························································· Which makes context throw a “! How to create a breakable text box inside math equation?

Hello, This is probably a very trivial question, but I'm not sure how TeX works in that respect. I'm used to use a macro \def\unit#1{{\rm\ #1} in constructs such as $1\unit{cm^2} \times 2\unit{cm}$. However I figured out that the contents of \unit{} cannot be broken accross lines, most probably because this becomes an hbox. Is there any simple workaround? Thanks a lot, Mojca

Hi, I'm trying to make some (mkiv) handouts from my simpleslides presentation. Unfortunately the resulting pdf is blank for the slides, no frames either. Can someone give me an example that works? mtxrun --script metapost and fonts?

Hallo. I've got a problem with metapost -> pdf translation. Since mptopdf is still broken in the last ConTeXt beta in the minimal distribution, I use "mtxrun --script metapost --split". It works well, only it ignores font setting. My code is like this: verbatimtex \definetypeface [times] [rm] [serif] [times] [default] [encoding=ec] \definetypeface [times] [mm] [math] [times] [default] [encoding=ec] \setupbodyfont [times,10pt] etex; beginfig(1); label(btex A $a_i$ etex,origin); endfig; end. I believe that the code in the verbatimtex ... etex environment should switch the major font to Times (it works with "texexec --mptex"). However, it is ignored by the "mtxrun --script metapost --split" script---Computer Modern in 12pt is used instead of Times in 10pt. Is there any way around this problem? Many thanks for your help. formula numbering in unnumbered sections

I came across the following problem recently: In my document I want chapters and sections to be numbered, but not subsections, subsubsections etc. Then, additionally I want my formulae to be numbered by chapter and section, but not subsection. In the following example the first equation gets numbered correctly as (1.1), (1.2) and (3) in the first chapter, and as (2.1), (2.2) and (3) in the second chapter respectively, which is not what I wanted. I'd rather have the formulae numbered as (1.1), (1.2) and (1.3) in the first chapter, and as (2.1), (2.2) and (2.3). Anybody has an idea how to accomplish this? Hello there, somehow texexec (in the latest minimal distribution) does not convert my bibtex-file correctly into an bbl-file. ------------------------- My bibtex file: @BOOK{Fowler2006, author = {Fowler, C. [NTG-context] How to retreive the bibentry number and use it somewhere?

Hi, I sorted the reference by the squence they appear in the text. I want to retreive a bibentry number, but use it at other places. I try to use \onlinecite, this number is the same as \cite[xxx]. Its number will become smaller if I put it before where I cite it. Can I get the absolute number of the bibentry, which means, this number will not change when I use it somewhere?

I'm guessing that I have not yet understood how to use abbreviations/synonyms correctly, but why does it make a difference if I call the synonyms "abbreviations" or "tests"? That is why do the following two files produce different results on my PC (Windows 7, context version 2011.02.09 16:42)? In the first case I get the abbreviation in capitals, in the second case, no capitals. What would I have to do to get small capitals? Hi, After updating my system to ubuntu 11.04, all sorts of access permissions seem to have changed. Some Ethiopic examples (hyphenation/breaking) in ConTeXt

Dear Hans, We were originally preparing the example for XeTeX (which behaves very weird anyway) and I would like to know how to typeset Ethiopic text in ConTeXt. The basic requirements are: - Words may be split after any character (character = syllable; it's in the range "1200-"139F), but not before word/sentence dividers. (We have hyphenation patterns, but one could just as well use some other mechanism to break.) - "1361 and "1362 are word dividers and sentence dividers. - One doesn't use spaces when writing. - In output one should get something like space (approximately the same width) before and something like space after word/sentence divider, except that the "space" before divider should not be breakable; I highly suspect that the amount of space before/after dividers depends on the font being used, but I may be wrong. - Text should be nicely justified (I wonder if microtypography would also help). I'm attaching a sample text that does approximately what I expect it to do, but I would like to avoid active characters, make the space before and after divider of equal size and I'm not sure what is the most appropriate approach in ConTeXt. The example also leaves a bit too much whitespace after dividers that end the line. Annotation and background color

Hi Wolfgang, Following up one of the recent threads about your annotation module, I made some experiments and found it a wonderful and extremely useful module. Out of curiosity, I wanted to know whether there is a key to set a background color for an annotation (as it is possible to use headcolor=darkred, or textcolor=darkgray, for instance). Also I didn't get the difference between textcolor=darkgray and color=darkgray: are they the same? The example I was testing is below. Dear All, In my docbook xml document I have fragments that I want to typeset indented. For this I use the tag <blockquote> which I map to startnarrower and stopnarrower. Some blockquotes in my document have a header: <blockquote> <title>How a cow catches a rabbit</title> <para>Text Text</para> </blockquote> I was wondering if the header could be setup just like sections and section headers in the following way: \startnarrower[title={title}, reference=reference] .... \stopnarrower Perhaps I need to create a new environment (blockquote) with these qualities? The title and the reference to the section (and subsections) can now easily be matched to lpath variables (much easier than when \section in fact refers to the section title). Another question related to this is how to can typeset the text of the blockquote in two columns, while its header is typeset over the full page. Kind regards, Robert

Proposed changes for Croatian language

Hi, according to [1], Croatian language has no em-dash. Could lang-def.mkiv (lines 240-243) be fixed to be: \c!leftsentence={\hbox{--~}}, \c!rightsentence={\hbox{~--}}, \c!leftsubsentence={--}, \c!rightsubsentence={--}, also, from my understanding, month names are only used for generating correct \date[...=...] output. If that's the case, they should be in Genitive case, as follows: january = siječnja february = veljače march = ožujka april = travnja may = svibnja june = lipnja july = srpnja august = kolovoza september = rujna october = listopada november = studenog december = prosinca If it would be easier, I can send fixed lang-txt.lua. LuaTeX error ...minimals/texmf-context/tex/context/base/util-prs.lua:125: bad argument #2 to 'lpegmatch' (string expected, got boolean). system > tex > error on line 0 in file : LuaTeX error ... <empty file> <*> ./test ? Any ideas on how to fix this? Also, I looked at back-exp.mkiv and it appears that xhtml export is possible. If so, what is the command to enable it. (I am guessing \setupexport[export=yes, xhtml=yes] but cannot test it due to the above error). Aditya

Problem with arrows in latest mkiv (again)

Hi Hans, I am sending again a message sent some two weeks ago, but probably it was lost… It seems that the latest beta (version 2011.05.01 12:50) has a problem with arrow in math mode, using Latin modern, while with Palatino the arrows are correct. Here is a minimal example and its PDF result (please look at the \longrightarrow in the PDF): \starttext Let $E,F$ be two Banach spaces and consider a linear operator $L : E \longrightarrow F$. \stoptext Best regards: OK

Plea for unicode help

Hi there, I'm experiencing a very strange error related to unicode at the moment and I can't pin down the problem for the life of me… The situation: I'm using context mkvi (2011.04.20 16:23) on Mac OS 10.6.7 (with the latest font patches in particular) and TeXShop 2.41. In my tex source file I have unicode letters with accents (like "clarín") and the file's encoding is set to UTF-8. It still looks like valid UTF-8 when opened with a different text editor, say SubEthaEdit or vim. The problem is, context compiles this to a PDF in which the accent is missing ("clarin"). The really strange thing happens now. I delete the offending letter and reenter it, in TeXShop there's *no* visual difference between before and after but the compiled pdf suddenly has the accent enabled again. I seem to remember that the missing accents issue didn't occur with a different font (Latin Modern vs. Minion Pro in context) for the *same* source. I'll have to check that again though. Has anyone seen this before? I wanted to ask up front before I really start digging into the issue… I might have missed something obvious. Many thanks, Oliver

bibliography basics

I haven't used bibliographies before and have a few basic questions. I am using mkiv, current version: 2011.04.03 22:32. 1. If I interpret the wiki pages correctly, the bib module is not needed for mkiv. On the other hand, examples I found in the archive have "\usemodule[bib]" included, although (I think) they were meant for mkiv, and leaving it out didn't affect the outcome. Question: has \usemodule[bib] no function in mkiv, never? 2. Where can I get documentation? Can Taco's bib-module documentation still be used? (In my experiments in some cases, not in others). 3. The "very basic example" on contextgarden (http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Bibliography_mkiv#Example_of_use) gave numbers in the text and an alphabetic list at the end. I added "\setuppublications[alternative=apa]". Would that be the way to do it? Please change it if there is something better (according to bibmod-doc, apa should be default). Thanks, Jörg

I want to typeset a multiplication table, where there will be a horizontal line after the first row, and a vertical line after the first column. Bibliography question: one list of references per chapter and one overall list

Hello all, I am currently making up my thesis in ConTeXt. And I am thoroughly impressed with the professional looking result I already have, although I have only recently started using ConTeXt. Now, I have a question regarding reference lists: I would like to have one list per chapter (which are original research papers), but also one big list at the end of the thesis, as a separate chapter, containing all unique references in whole thesis. At the moment, I'm using the bib module. This works perfectly if I compile every single chapter separately (i.e. 'texexec chapter01.tex', for example). However, if I compile the whole component (i.e. 'texexec thesis.tex'), I obviously get at every chapter the same reference list, regardless whether the references were cited in that particular chapter. Does anyone have suggestions on how to accomplish this (if at all possible)? With kind regards, Renald

I draw a figure by tikz but found it is not in the middle but a little left of the page, and then I wrote a piece code and impoved my view. And I tried to add some parameters to put the figure in the middle but failed. Positional graphics (MetaFun)!

Hi, Inspired by the examples given in the MetaFun manual (Oct. 2010) I tried a few, but I can't get them working! I'm specially interested in the 'Anchors and layers' (p.257, screen version!) feature. I typed in the MetaPost code as given on page 260, defined the anchors, but no circles and lines appear in the resulting pdf-file. Well I assume it must be something trivial. Anybody any idea? P.S. Hi, Why does verbatim text not line break properly. \setuppapersize[A5] \showframe \starttext % hyphenate is not the right word here; but illustrates the problem \type{a very very long line to see if it hyphenates or not, that can require a lot oftyping phew}. \stoptext Also, it is possible to completely prevent line breaks for \type. Right, I have a feeling that this is MetaPost related, hence the random problems with different styles. I can reproduce this now without simpleslides too, using only metapost. Hi Here's another qpdf problem I've encountered lately. Not sure if it's ConTeXt's fault (simpleslides perhaps?) or qpdf. As a result, I reinstalled my TeXLive 2010 version and followed the post-installation steps in the TeXLive documentation. I have a demo file(attached to this post) that I wanted to test out. Hi Hans, using the 'Report PDF syntax issues'-preflight in Acrobat9 gives a warning about an 'Unexpected value for this key'. I used 'pdf-x4p.mkiv' from /texmf-context/tex/context/test/ as test file. Probably just a warning about a redundancy (see 'PDF Reference, version 1.7.pdf', p376), setting 'BaseState /ON' in combination with '/ON [ whatever] /OFF [whatever]'. Removing 'BaseState /ON' results in a flawless PDF. Regards, Peter

problem with printing pdf files (MKIV on Mac)

Hello, I'm not sure if anyone will be able to help, but it doesn't hurt to ask. I'm using ConTeXt MKIV 2011.03.11 11:45 (I will try to upgrade first). When I try to print the document from Mac (Skim.app) to two different printers, I get pure junk on both of them (bold and italic fonts come out semi-ok, but regular doesn't). If I print an older document or if I compile the same document with MKII, the document prints out fine on the same printer. The document also prints out fine when printing from Linux. I'm using one network PostScript printer and one network printer that is most probably using PCL drivers and both generate junk. I'm using "palatino" typescript. Mac is well known for displaying Word-generated documents as almost-pure-junk (one gets a different font and screwed up kerning instead of the original font that one would see in Word or in generated PDF when opened with Adobe Acrobat; but I'm not sure if it is Apple or Microsoft that have buggy software in that case) and for crashing on documents using smooth shading patterns. Does anyone have any suggestion how I could figure out what is wrong with the document? I would like to figure out if it is LuaTeX's or Apple's fault that it behaves so weird. (Can I send a document to PostScript printer on specific IP from a Mac without having to use Apple's libraries for handling PDF?) Mojca

MathJax and ConTeXt?

Hi all, As some of the gurus here may know, MathJax, http://www.mathjax.org allows one to display maths formulas typed in TeX (or LaTeX) and MathML to be correctly displayed on web pages. Executing 'mtxrun' without arguments shows the list of commands. There one finds: mtxrun | ConTeXt TDS Runner Tool 1.30 mtxrun | mtxrun | --script run an mtx script (lua prefered method) (--noquotes), no script gives list Doing 'mtxrun --script' I expected to see a list of the available scripts. Hi, I am a latex user trying to extend my knowledge to include ConTeXt. I have installed TeXLive2010 along with some latex editors including TeXWorks. attachment attaches twice

Hi I'm trying to use PDF attachments again, but run into some issues. Here's my small example (att.tex): %%% start %%% \setupinteraction[state=start] \starttext \useattachment[myfile][title][name][att.tex] \attachment[myfile] \stoptext %%% end %%% 1) Using context-current makes 1 attachment, whereas context beta makes 2 attachments (page + attachments tab?). I've attached the two generated PDFs. I guess the "attachments tab" attachment is not intended. 2) The third parameter should give a custom name for the attachment, and I recall this from old times (maybe mkii) to behave like that, though I can't reproduce this now. Is this broken (as it has no effect right now)? 3) I want to have some attachments (source code) from a url, can this be added to behave like \externalfigure? I want to use it like this: "\useattachment[myfile][title][name][http://git.example.com/master/att.tex]" Right now that just attaches an "Unknown" (maybe shortcut) but it cannot be viewed/opened or saved. Undefined control sequence. \pgfutil@addpdfresource@colorspaces ...olorspaces {#1} l.396 ...rspaces{ /pgfprgb [/Pattern /DeviceRGB] } The latex pendant (even with a tikz picture in it) compiles fine. I have another computer with an older version of pgf, which works well (with context and with latex). After an update to 2.10, context stopped working, latex still does. Skipping item numbers in an itemized list?

Hello, The effect I want is something like: 1. First item 2. Second item 5. Fifth item 6. Sixth item 8. Eight item and so on. Every now and then I need to skip a number or two. In LaTeX I could do this with \addtocounter{enumi}{2} - but how is this done in ConTeXt? Thanks very much, Alasdair

All, After being away from my project for a while I returned to find that something that worked now no longer does. Layers again

Context and metapost: using \frac

Hi I am using context to run a metapost graph. I am however unable to insert a label with \frac, since this is not pure Tex but Latex. This seems to be a known problem for metapost: -Seems for metapost only, one should add %&latex (http://ryanmlayer.wordpress.com/tag/metapost/) -I saw also one post where it was mentione done should add //\setupMPpage[offset=1pt] //(http://www.tug.org/pipermail/pdftex/2001-March/000429.html). I tried, but did not work however... Any idea how I should do? Find below minimal example, that does not work on my computer when compiling with context... Thanks!! strange error on ntgmaps style

I get a strange error when using the dutch NTG-MAPS style I acquired from Taco, quite some time ago taking into account the fast pace of development in ConTeXt ;-) The error location in the log seems to be not directly related to the culprit, because deleting some lines shifts the given linenumber that number of lines down. If I comment out the maps style and its macros: \usemodule[map-se]\enablemode[nosubsub] \startArticle[.....] \startAbstract ... \stopAbstract \startKeywords ... \stopKeywords \stopArticle then typesetting does not give the error. Grid typesetting and inline math

Hello, I'm struggling with the grid. I've stepped from LaTeX to luaLaTeX for a simpler font selection, and from luaLaTeX to ConTeXt for getting a usable grid (because I was told that it supports typesetting on a grid). Now that I got font selection working as desired in ConTeXt, the grid is driving me crazy. I'm trying to use the grid as described in details.pdf, and I want halfline spacing around formulas in text, because a full line is definitely too much. This is what I'm compiling: \setupbodyfont[10pt,serif] % should be lm? \setuplayout[grid=yes] \setuptextformulas[step=halfline] \starttext \showgrid Testing inline math: \gform{x_2 = \frac{a}{b}}. The following line should be seperated from this one by half a line, but it isn't. Testing inline math: \gform[-]{x_2 = \frac{a}{b}}. The following line should be seperated from this one by half a line, but it isn't. \stoptext Both paragraphs look identical, the second line is too far away from the first one. Hi all, Using the last mkiv from the minimals, \setuppublications seems out of order. If I write: .................................. \setupbibtex [database=/home/jean/biblio] \setuppublications[alternative=apa] \starttext {\bf Bibliography} \nocite[foo, bla, blu] \placepublications \stoptext ................................... the pub list is empty. But if comment out this line the bibliography is printed; it works also ok with \setuppublications[] -- Jean

Creating a PDF named destination

Hello all, This seems to be a very obvious FAQ but I can't find an answer anywhere. How can one create a named destination in an output PDF file such that an HTML link to <filename>.pdf#nameddest=<name> will work? I'm using Mk II in case that is relevant. I kinda assumed that a section title with an ID would automatically create a named destination with the same ID, but that doesn't appear to be the case. So given a file generated from \starttext \chapter[myid]{My chapter} Blah blah. \section[myotherid]{My section} Blah blah. \stoptext I'd like to be able to link from an HTML file to the named destinations myid and myotherid using the #nameddest URL construct above. \type macro weird?

This works fine: \starttext Here a type macro <\type{\abc}> \stoptext This also: \starttext \placetable{table \type{abc} title}{abc} \stoptext This too: \starttext \placetable{table \type{\blank} title}{abc} \stoptext But this gives an error (mind the \ before abc). \starttext \placetable{table \type{\abc} title}{abc} \stoptext Do I misinterprete something here? I just wanted to typeset "\abc" in the type-font. Why is the very first \abc treated as text to typeset but requires the placetable argument that it is an existing macro? Or isn't this the intended behaviour? Base mode ignores specified script and language

In base mode the specifies script and language and always uses the default. This is because in font-otb.lua the feature initializer is registered at position 1 while setscript et al. in font-oti.lua are not giving a position, as a result base mode feature initialisation is invoked before script/language are set. Bug: footnote's "textcommand" overflows?

Dear all, there appears to be a bug in the handling of font features in footnotes… the following messes up the footnote block in 2011.04.20 16:23, but yields the expected result in 2011.02.14 23:30. --- \definefontfeature [superscripts] [default] [sups=yes] \usetypefile [type-optical] \usetypescript [minion] \setupbodyfont [minion] \setupnote [footnote] [textcommand=\setfontfeature{superscripts}, textstyle=, numbercommand=] \starttext \dorecurse{9}{This\footnote{Hello World #1} is a test.\par } \stoptext --- The problem is not triggered for Latin Modern, also not for, say, "textcommand=\it". LuaTeX bug in 4096?

Hi This is very likely luatex related, but I hope it's fine to post it here. I'm using this example: http://www.ntg.nl/pipermail/ntg-context/2011/058519.html This works with luatex svn rev 4195, but with the latest 4196 I get this: </home/reviczky/.texmf-var/luatex-cache/context/e570cb3e0e3ab0118ca08dd148bbec7d/schemes/https-chart.googleapis.com-chart-cht-p3-chs-250x100-chd-t-60-40-chl-Hello-World (PNG copy)> mtx-context | fatal error: no return code, message: luatex: execution interrupted% No logs are created. xits-math.lfg

Misplaced integral *scripts

See the attached file, it is broken for all OTF fonts; the italic correction is used the wrong way (added to width while it should be subtracted from it). It seems to be a ConTeXt issue (testing with same luatex binary but with TeXLive ConTeXt gives correct output). Regards, Khaled -- Khaled Hosny Egyptian Arab
