How to define fallback font for symbols

Hi all, Is it possible to set a fallback font from which glyphs will be taken if the current font doesn't have it? For example, I'd want to use fancy miscellaneous symbols from the Symbola font using their unicode codepoint without any extra font-changing command (and obviously, I don't want to use Symbola for the rest of the text). Alternatively, setting different fonts for different unicode blocks would also do the trick. Vianney

Placing figures flush right and captions in the margin

Hi, I want to place my figures flush right, so that they are aligned with the right border of my text area. Captions should be in the right margin, flush left, ragged right. It is a one-sided document. I've tried \setupfloats[ location=right] \setupcaptions[ location=rightmargin, align=flushleft, headstyle=\tfx, style=\tfx] \usemodule[tikz] \starttext \placefigure{Test figure caption with a pretty long text which might eventually require a line break.}{ \starttikzpicture \draw (0,0) rectangle (2,2); \stoptikzpicture } \stoptext and the figure is placed left, and no caption is shown. When I remove location=rightmargin, the caption is visible. Other settings I've tried: outermargin - invisible righthanging - invisible right - caption is typeset in the gap between text and margin I found this old thread: http://archive.contextgarden.net/message/20090707.065101.8175a86c.en.html, but it is not very enlightening. I'm taking the options from http://pmrb.free.fr/contextref.pdf. My ConTeXt version is 2011.06.11. How can I place figures flush right? How can I place the captions in the right margin? combining character (unicode 0364)

Dear list, a question concerning combining characters: I try to make a letter out of a small elevated „e“ (unicode 0364, combining latin small letter e) with „a“, „o“ and „u“ using Junicode with Wolfgang Schuster’s typescript. In Fontforge the mark positioning lookup looks good to me, but ConTeXt somehow seems to ignore the anchors in the font. The „mark“-feature is enabled in the typescript. Maybe someone can give me a hint how to get this working? Thanks in advance! Daniel

Hi Using math with dejavu as the bodyfont produces: ! Math error: parameter \Umathquad\displaystyle is not set. minimal example: --- \setupbodyfont[dejavu] \starttext $e = mc^2$ \stoptext --- Installing the xits-math (https://github.com/khaledhosny/xits-math/) solves the problem. Shouldn't there be a fallback to lmmath or similar? Log using context without xits-math attached. Adam

LuaTeX + microtype: Small Caps vs. Letter Spacing

Hi everyone, I'm happy to see that by now almost all of microtype's features are available in Lua, almost like in the old days. There's one thing that seems a bit strange, though: While I have no trouble applying letter spacing using \textls or \lsstyle to regular, italic, or bold text, I can't get it to work on small caps. What's even stranger: while this problem occurs with all fonts I've tried, it does /not/ occur when I don't specify a font at all. Consider the example below. Thanks again, it works very well. However I still have one question: is it possible to decide of the placement of the overlay and its alignment? With your example the section name is centered both horizontally and vertically. I'd like to flush it right at least. [mkiv] \setupfootnotes[n=2] not working properly

When using columns in footnotes, the line length is not adjusted. Instead, they have the same length as if there where only one column (like in the normal setup). This works like it should in context-online (wich uses mkii, I suppose). Modules inside project structure

Hello, I'm currently trying to split our ConTeXt project into smaller parts, utilizing the ConTeXt project structure. I thought it might be a good idea to also extract reusable parts into private modules. Now I face the problem, that I can't find an optimal spot to place these modules. Currently I just have them at the root of the project where I also have the environment file that is used. That kinda works, since \usemodule uses resolvers.findctxfile which also traverses parent directories. Unfortunately \registerctxluafile doesn't, so the corresponding lua file isn't loaded (which I currently circumvent with dofile()). I guess it might be cleaner to make use of texmf-project or something similar, however that would require the "user" (who is working with that project) to modify their TeX tree and rebuild their formats. It's also a bit strange, since these modules are exclusive to that one project - a new project would at least require copies of these files anyway. So these modules should preferably lie somewhere beneath the actual project, and not "globally" on the system of the user. What would you suggest to handle such projects that should be separated and independent from the ConTeXt installation of the "users"? Would you use modules at all in that case? -- Best Regards, Andreas

Hello again, it's been a while... ;-) I need to pack fixed lines into a fixed width box. Some years ago I had something similar in plain PostScript, where I pre-calculated the width of a text box, let the default font if it would fit my max size, otherwise try a narrow font and if that wasn’t enough decreased font size until it would fit. This time I've only one font and must not decrease font size, but must use negative kerning and perhaps some artificial narrowing. How can I do that with ConTeXt? Automatic landscape figure rotation

Dear ConTeXters, I have a full-page, landscape figure in my double-sided document which I rotate 90° to fit the page. In all the books I've seen, such figures are rotated ‘outward’ -- i.e. with the top towards the binding, so 90° clockwise on verso pages and 90° anticlockwise on recto. Is there a simple way to do this automatically in ConTeXt? At the moment I just check where the figure ends up, then change it manually. (Apologies if there is a documented answer -- I've searched the wiki and docs, but it's the kind of question which is hard to reduce into keywords.) Thanks, POnt

Hello, apart from a pending fix for TeX Live installer (shell script "install-tl") which writes out a proper texmfcnf.lua based on what user enters as his/her preferences for locations of TEXMFHOME etc. (if you don't touch any settings, this is not too important and if you do, you can manually fix the file) and some yet-to-be-made decision about when to run 'mtxrun --generate" (which you can also ignore and simply run mtxrun --generate by hand), ConTeXt in TeX Live 2011 should work now, thanks to all the effort that Taco in particular has put into this. If anyone is willing to help to work on man pages, please feel free to volunteer (context man page has already been committed, mtxrun not, but both of them need more input). The following is the list of modules. If you miss any, it is now the best time to ask. Disable line-break when \typefile

Hello, is there a way how to disable line breaks of (very) long lines typeset with \typefile, even if this would cause overfull hbox (i.e. typesetting to "out-of-page" area)? The following example: ---- % This a very long line which should be typeset to one line even if there'll be overfull hbox \definetyping[Std][bodyfont=10pt,style=\tt\setupinterlinespace] \starttext \typefile[Std]{TypeFi.mkiv} \startcolumns[n=2,rule=on] \typefile[Std]{TypeFi.mkiv} \stopcolumns \stoptext ---- gives a result where there is new line between "overfull" and "hbox" in normal mode and between "be" and "typeset" and "be" and "overfull" in column mode. Is there a way how to avoid this, how to force continuing on the same line? Digits-Module in tabulate does not work

Hi, I'm using the digit-module and enjoy, that I get a nice output using the following: \starttext \digits{30e-3} \stoptext instead of \starttext $30 \cdot 10^{-3}$ or $30 ⋅ 10^{-3}$ \stoptext But now I'm wondering why this module does not work in the tabulate-environment with: \starttabulate[|l|l] \HL \NC first \NC second \AR \HL \NC \digits{30e-3}\NC \digits{30e+3} \AR \HL \stoptabulate In the pdf-file now appears only 30e-3. verbatim text in MkIV and \installprettytype...

Recently, I tried to typeset some verbatim MATLAB source codes in MkIV, but I can't seem to be able to grasp the concept of pretty printers. All the sample codes I found on the net/wiki/mailing list don't compile, complaining that "\installprettytype" is an unknown command...?! Is there any module I have to load first or something I missed in the wiki? Or can anyone provide me with a minimalistic example? Best regards, Julian

Hi all, I’m struggling with the font used in metapost. The only way to actually change it appears to be enclosing the mp graphic in two statements of \setupbodyfont[…] -- which I need to avoid. Hi, \activatespacehandler{on} does not work in MkIV. I guess that this is because \controlspace does not give the right glyph in MkIV, possibly because, in opentype fonts, \char 32 is the same as regular space. Any idea how to fix this? Is there a unicode character for visible space. A discussion on the xetex mailing list suggests http://www.tug.org/pipermail/xetex/2006-February/003095.html 0x2423, but that looks very different from \tt\char 32. Aditya

I'm still wrestling with this issue of doing InDesign-like documents. Does ConTeXt provide a way to simulate multiple "stories" or flows of text? For example, suppose I have a newspaper with two articles on page 1. One of them continues on page 2, and the other on page 3. Is there a way to do that? Alternatively, I could consider plain TeX or LuaTeX, but I know very little about either of those. I'm prepared to learn, but I'd like to get some hints about what seems like the likliest path to produce this kind of document. I'm aware that modes are accessible by 'tex.modes' ('tex.modes.Mode' gives 'true' in this case); but I'd need to get also the source file name ("Source.mkiv") and the option ("--result" -> "Result.pdf"). After I reinstall my system fedora 15 and install the latest context mtx-context | main context file: /opt/context/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/base/context.mkiv mtx-context | current version: 2011.06.09 00:59 I want to use context to produce simplified chinese document as before, I set the OSFONTDIR=/usr/share/fonts/adobe and run the command :mtxrun --script fonts --reload to generate the fonts for use. But it seem have no efforts as before, because I could not find the font adobesongstd use command mtxrun --script fonts --list --pattern=* --all. But I can see the font use system fc-list command, What's the problem and how can I fix it. Thanks.

Hello, I have the following situation. One source file is to be converted by Ctx normally and secondly with a special mode, e.g. "--mode=PageOneOnly". I'd like to get two result with: (1) Context.exe source.mkiv -> should give 'Source.pdf', (2) Context.exe source.mkiv --mode=PageOneOnly --result=Source-Pg1.pdf -> to give 'Source-Pg1.pdf'. The problem is that the option "--result=..." just renames the result; it means, if the 'Source.pdf' has been created by (1), it would be OVERWRITTEN by (2), as (2) normally processes 'source.mkiv' to 'source.pdf' in the first phase and renames it after. So the question is - is there a better way which would PRESERVE the <file>.pdf if <file>.mkiv is to be processed and '--result=<another-file>' is being used? Or (question for developers) - wouldn't be better to work directly with an output stream(s) name based on '--result=...' option, and to take the source file name for the output stream name ONLY in case that '--result=...' was not specified? (This would also mean to create other support file(s), like 'Source-Pg1.log', 'Source-Pg1.tuc' - IMHO this would be OK.) Best regards, Lukas -- Ing. Hello, I'm trying to use \usetypescript[antykwa-poltawskiego] \setupbodyfont[antykwa-poltawskiego,10pt] \starttext \eTeX \stoptext but it fails miserably. An easy workaround is to use greek letters, but also the whole math is somewhat broken. In MKII the font would fall back on Latin Modern in case that there are no math glyphs, but ConTeXt MKIV complains about ! Math error: parameter \Umathquad\displaystyle is not set. system > tex > error on line 6 in file a.tex: Math error: parameter \Umathquad\displaystyle is not set ... What would be the remedy for that? (Tested with TeX Live 2011.) Mojca

This can be done with: \setuphead[subsection][before={\page}] But when I have had a section before the subsection instead of a subsection before the subsection, I do not want a new page. DocBook in ConTeXt - any new ideas?

Dear list, I am beginning a rather tedious documentation project and will most probably end up with DocBook. The fact is I haven't used it for any serious work for about 10 years. Docbook In ConText haven't been updated since 2003. Does it mean it's so perfect or instead rather obsolete? Could you recommend other approaches which work out-of-the-box (or almost). Obviously I would prefer ConTeXt based solutions. DocBook is not mandatory in fact, I would happily learn other documentation system. The \externalfigure command can take a width and/or a height parameter, and context will be happy to take either one into account. I'm trying to translate that into xml syntax. All, Pardon for trying to boost the topic, but I still can't seem to gain control over marginal material in an Arabic section using the new typo-mar.mkiv. I confess, it's quite likely that I'm just not getting something obvious. I've rotated the page to landscape to show where the marginal material winds up when margin is [right]. Hello all, I'm afraid I've never spent the time to understand fonts properly, I just make do with the defaults most of the time. Now, however, I am being forced to use company default fonts for some documents. I have got as far as using the following commands to setup my body font: \usetypescriptfile[type-win] \usetypescript[arial] \setupbodyfont[arial, 10pt] But the teletype style now has no effect: e.g. using {\tt teletype} gives the same font as normal, and \showbodyfont reveals the same. Problem installing minimals on PowerMac G4

Hi, When installing the current version of ConTeXt-minimals on my old PowerMac G4 (OSX 10.4.11), on which the minimals have been installed, and have worked, without any problems up till october last year, the process stopped midway, because the file 'metafun' could not be opened. The last lines of the log are: "TeXExec | using tex engine xetex TeXExec | using tex format path ./xetex TeXExec | unable to make format due to lack of permissions TeXExec | using mp engine mpost TeXExec | using mps format path . TeXExec | generating mps format metafun This is MetaPost, version 1.504 (kpathsea version 6.0.0) ! I can't open file `metafun'. <*> metafun Please type another input file name: " Does anybody know what can be done about this? Moving module installation from first-setup.sh to ctxtools

Hi ConTeXt community. While looking for free (preferably open-source) tools which I could use for typesetting a planned internal newsletter-booklet for a non-profit organization (to be released in printed form in regular intervals - each issue with new content of course, but same/similar style), I came across ConTeXt. I usually use Inkscape and various WYSIWYG word processing software for designing and layouting flyers/leaflets/etc., but in this case (many pages, varying and regularly updated content, consistent style) I'm afraid those tools simply don't cut in in terms of professional-quality typesetting capabilities and content//style separation. So programmatic typesetting might be the answer. I thought of LaTeX first, but I read from various sources that using ConTeXt might be easier for typesetting book-like things, especially if you want to design your own styles. Before I delve in deeper, though, I would like to ask you (the ConTeXt community) some questions: a) Is the ConTeXt project alive? The newest PDF documentation I could find seems to be from 2007; most of it is dated 2003 or older. b) Do you think that ConTeXt is an appropriate tool for the use case I described (be honest please ;-)), and easy enough to learn for someone with almost no TeX experience? The requirements are: - Support for elaborate, colorful, graphics-heavy design, which I would preferably create in Inkscape and then export as vector graphics (or port to ConTeXt's own graphics language) as necessary. - Ability to write a style *once* (with reasonable effort), and "outsource" it to an external file (or files), so that for each new release of the newsletter, only a simple content TeX file (or files) with minimal amount of markup is required (which e.g. even a non-tech-savvy writer/editor could edit) - Ability to easily include pictures in the content, and let the typesetting engine automatically position them (either in the main text area with text floating around them, or in special margin areas). c) Are there any full-featured examples of design-heavy booklets/magazines/etc created with ConTeXt., for which the full source code is publicly available? That would be *really* helpful in order to assess how much work would be required, and also to learn how exactly it's done in practice. Thanks! Sanja C.

Validate (cross)references

Hello, if I use \in, \about, \at or anything else that generates a cross-reference, and that reference happens to be invalid (typo or whatever), it just prints out "nothing". Is there a way to have context throw an error if a reference is invalid? (That probably would only make sense in the second pass of context, since the first pass has to collect the references first.) If context can't do it by itself, I'll probably just grep for "unknown reference" and use that, but if context could do it by itself, it would be nice for automated builds (I actually have my current ConTeXt project in a Continous Integration system, so anything that leads to a wrong result should throw an error there.) -- Best Regards, Andreas

Hi, I would like to be able to specify a style that would apply to text that appears on the first line of a paragraph after whitespace. I have no idea how to go about it. Specifically, I have a font with an alternate glyph that can only be used after whitespace, and I would like to have it used automatically when appropriate. Modifying the header of a Register : \setuphead or \setupregister not working

Hi, How can one modify the header of a Register, after it apparently inherited from Chapter ?In the following example, I try to have the title "INDEX" at the same height as the title "CHAPTER",but neither the \setuphead nor \setupregister commands seem to do anything.Is there another command for that ?I couldn't find it. Hans, et alia, Thanks for mentioning typo-mar.mkiv. Once I found it, and figured out what to do with it (put it in my texmf-local directory), it appears to, as you say, "offer more control over margindata". My (rather belated) thanks for offering this extended functionality, though my grasp of context is still too fragile to really understand how to use it. typo-mar.mkiv appears to introduce a bug in my Arabic typesetting. In my bilingual text, my margin data (pg/lb numbers) are placed correctly in the margin of the English text, but the margins of the Arabic text appear to be miscalculated and the margindata overwrites the beginnings of the lines (or disappears beyond the edge if I set margin 'left'). My tyronic fooling around may certainly be at fault, but if you could offer any observations on the following, I'd be grateful. ConTeXt ver: 2011.04.24 15:15 MKIV My environment file is included below, stripped down as far as I could to its essentials. compresslevel and png graphics (mkiv)

Hi, I just made a one pager (TEXpage) out of a big png graphic (5900x4094). The compressed size of the graphics is normally around 1.37MB on the highest png compress level (9) and 1.32MB after using optipng (only around 3% reduction this time). To my surprise the size of the final PDF was about 2.3MB. After adding '\pdfcompresslevel9' the size went down to 1.48MB. Still not what I wanted... So I was wondering: is there an option to embed the png graphic as it is (no re-compression)? Otherwise the time consuming usage of optipng would be a complete waste of time.
