List of special characters

While writing the documentation about using ConTeXt I need some 'special' characters. A few I have found, for example \%, \backslash, \texttilde, \percent. But until now I did not find how to represent [ and ]. How would I use those characters in my document? Also: is there somewhere a 'complete' list? I found several, but they where all for LaTeX and are not completely the same. For example LaTeX uses \textbackslash which does not work in ConTeXt which uses \backslash. -- Cecil Westerhof

Different output formats

I am writing a document for our client that has accepted to work with ConTeXt. One of the things I want to mention is the different output formats. I know PDF and xhtml and that in the near future epub will be available. Are there others? (I know dvi, but I do not think it is worth mentioning.) -- Cecil Westerhof

mlib plugin question

Hi, I use a mlib plugin to manually start/stop transparency. All graphics in between will be drawn with the defined state. Not very useful in general, but I need it for some graphics in Aero. I use: \setupindenting[yes, small, next] This works on the main text, but not on the footnotes. In \setupfootnotes I do not find an option to do the same. Am I overlooking something, or is it really not possible? -- Cecil Westerhof

Formatting lines in TeXworks and using spellchecking

Until now I worked with Emacs to edit ConTeXt documents. Because I have to make a manual for the client, I now work under Windows with TeXworks. In Emacs I could easily reformat my (source) lines, to be not wider as 72 characters. Is something like that possible with TeXworks. Also: there is a spell-checking option, bet there are no languages to choose from. How can I install languages? -- Cecil Westerhof

Installing ConTeXt in Windows (XP)

I like to install ConTeXt on a Windows (XP) machine (so I can make an installation manual). dejavu fonts

Hello, CTAN has a new font package for dejavu fonts (http://ctan.org/pkg/dejavu) The package contains original fonts (suitable for XeTeX and LuaTeX) as well as many tfm files. The author is willing to add support for ConTeXt. In my opinion it would make more sense to support straight into the font package (like it is done for Gentium) as opposed to adding them to ConTeXt core, but I would first like to ask for opinion before sending anything to him. If nothing else I have a question. How exactly should one split "type-fontname" files in third-party font packages? ConTeXt core uses type-one.mkii (pdftex), type-one.mkiv (empty), type-otf.mkii (xetex), type-otf.mkiv (luatex), but that approach doesn't work with \usetypescript[type-name] In Gentium we used \beginOLDTEX etc., but that is suboptimal. some bug in xml processing

Hi all, Hans, you won't like this a bit, but I'm hitting a bug in xml-processing with the latest beta. It's a fairly complex setup, so I don't have a minimal example yet. All I can say is: it works with version 2011.06.19 14:17 (which I have on a server), but when I process the same files with version 2011.08.04 00:42, I get this error: structure > sectioning > section @ level 3 : 0.0.1 -> 8. November 2011: \hfill \bgroup \em Ilias\egroup und \bgroup \em Odyssee\egroup ) ! Morning all, I am trying to get together something for expressing physics appropriately and precisely. The \units and \lunits command and I are becoming better acquainted, but now I ma having grief with with the \digits{}. In particular, exponents don't seem to function as documented in the 'my way' and I cannot find anything more up to date on the wiki. Input: \digits 123.222,00^10 \digits 123.222,00e10 \digits /123.222,00e-12 \digits -123.222,00e-12 \digits +123.222,00e-12 Actual output: 123 222.0010 123 222.0010 123 222.00−12 −123 222.00−12 +123 222.00−12 (in each case last two digits are superscript, as their signs) Expected output 123.222,00 · 1010 123.222,00 · 1010 123.222,00 · 10−12 -123.222,00 · 10−12 +123.222,00 · 10−12 (in each case last two digits are superscript, as their signs) ???Anyone?

Alignment with inline headings

Hi, I am looking for a way to vertically align the start of paragraphs after an inline header, i.e. in the following example, I would like each first word (Lorem, Lorem, Suspendisse, Cras, Proin, ...) to start on the same column. Section numbering in MkIV

Hi everybody, I need to use the following numbering scheme for the different section levels. Conflict between fr and cyrillic

Hi everybody, I have an almost finished report inside which I need to typeset some russian words. I am using ConTeXt Standalone current (2011.05.18 18:04 MKII). Reading the wiki, it seems that there are no more fonts with cyrillic glyphs in this distribution. So I switched to XeTeX in order to use my system fonts. Unfortunately I stumbled into a problem when combining my fr settings with a font switching command. Here is a minimal example. \mainlanguage[fr] \useencoding[ffr] \definefontsynonym[CyrF][name:Lucida Grande] \definefont[Russian][CyrF sa 1] \starttext Quelques caractères cyrilliques {\Russian Мама и Папа} et on continue tranquillement. \stoptext If I delete either line \mainlanguage[fr] or \useencoding[ffr] everything works fine (for the font switching, but obviously not for the other part of my report :-). System font handling problems in MacTeX 2011 dist

Good day! Tried to typeset a document using a template I created using MacTeX 2010. Below are the font setup lines that I used: \definefont[hla][abalone at 10pt] \definefont[hlb][bigcaslon at 10pt] \definebodyfont[9pt,10pt,11pt,12pt][rm,ss,tt,mm][default] \definefontsynonym[Serif][MinionPro-Regular][encoding=utf8] \definefontsynonym[SerifBold][MinionPro-Semibold] \definefontsynonym[SerifItalic][MinionPro-It] \definefontsynonym[SerifBoldItalic][MinionPro-SemiboldIt] \definefontsynonym[SerifCaps][MinionPro-Medium][features=smallcaps] \definetypeface[cb][rm][serif][MinionPro-Regular][default][encoding=utf8] \setupbodyfont[rm,9pt] In MacTeX 2010 and MacTeX 2011, I have no problems typesetting text marked with \hla or \hlb. However, when it comes to the body font, I am only able to successfully typeset using the specified fonts in MacTeX 2010 but not in MacTeX 2011. What happens in MacTeX 2011 is that the body font remains the default modern latin fonts. It seems like \definefontsynonym in MacTeX 2011 does not map the specified font (e.g. MinionPro-Regular) into Serif. As is, the only way I can use system fonts in the body would be to use \definefont definitions of the desired system fonts into \tf, \bf, \it, \bi, etc. tags. Is there a way to go about this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. joel mendoza

For the records: \setupstructureblock was named back to \setupsectionblock At some time in history, I could define different layouts for right and left pages like \setuplayout[right][rightmargin=10mm] This syntax isn't valid any more - what's the new way? Hi there, compiling this minimal document: \mainlanguage[es] \starttext \currentdate\par \date \stoptext I get 7 agosto 2011 7 agosto 2011 Being a Spanish native speaker, excuse me, but I guess it makes no sense for a date. Indentation as in itemize

When you use itemize text is neatly put under each-other. I have the folowing in a macro: \bTR \RowWorkTable{}{\bullet\space #1} \eTR When text is overflowing to the following line, the text starts under the bullet. I would like it to start under the character after the space, just like in itemize. How would I do this? As a hack I now use: \bTR \RowWorkTable{}{\startitemize \item #1 \stopitemize} \eTR This does what I want, but I do not find it very pretty. I am on a Mac, and the MacTeX distribution installed everything as expected in /usr/local. But things do not work as expected. lpeg splitter

Hi, I'm currently trying to adapt my MP specials to the 'new' plugin handler. My actual problem is the splitting of the 'ssh_colors' string with lpeg. Sadly my knowledge about lpeg is nearly zero and it would take me a few days to understand this (my mind is already contaminated with 'regular expressions'). How do I split the 'ssh_colors' string ["ssh_colors"]="1:1:0 0.949:0.729:0 0.894:0.514:0 0.835:0.341:0 0.776:0.216:0 0.706:0.125:0 0.631:0.063:0.588 0.549:0.027:0.953 0.443:0.008:0.953 0.318:0:0.588 0:0:0", to get the single color strings (r:g:b) in say 'col[i]'? A couple of setupcaptions questions

Hi all I'm trying to setup captions for figures with mkiv. I found this page on the wiki: http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Reference/en/setupnumbering Using both these: \setupcaptions[way=bysection,prefixsegments=section] \setupformulae[way=bysection,prefixsegments=section] formulae are numbered as expected but captions are not, the prefix is lacking. Problem with table of contents? (Mark IV)

Dear ConTeXt Users', I'm struggling with the setupcombinedlist command to finetune the table of contents of a book I'm currently writing using ConTeXt. I use the following setup command in the preamble: \setupcombinedlist [content] [level=section,width=\textwidth,alternative=g] and use the command: \completecontent[level=section] to actually generate it. When using the alternative=g option the navigation in my pdf document is completely absent, while e.g. alternative=a the navigation is working as aspected! But alternative=g also worked in Mark II! Hello, how to "redirect" the Ctx "local" directory "c:\ConTeXt\tex\texmf-local" somewere else, e.g. to "c:\Lukas\ConTeXt"? I'm looking for a way which would "survive" any occasion I update Ctx (even when I delete the whole Ctx installation directory, = "installation from scratch"), so e.g. editing a config file which would appear in Ctx installation tree doesn't seem to be the best. Hi! I recently installed the MacTex 2011 distribution and has been trying to typeset some chemical formulas using ConTeXt MKIV (i.e. via ConTeXt (LuaTeX) engine of TeXShop). However, if I try to typeset the following \startformula \chemical{Na^+,+,Cl^-,GIVES,NaCl} \stopformula I get Na+ + Cl— GIVES NaCl (Note: The superscript "+" and "—" of the ions were correctly displayed.) But if I use \chemical{GIVES} under the \startchemical \stopchemical environment, I am able to get the left arrow that it's supposed to produce in the chemical formula environment. Sharing color between MP and TeX

Hello, I'd need to use the same color for text and drawing inside a MP code. The typical situation looks the following way: ---- \definecolor[COL][.7red] \starttext \startMPcode label(btex \color[COL]{Some text} etex, (0, 0)); color col; col := .7red; draw unitsquare scaled .5cm withcolor col; \stopMPcode \stoptext ---- The problem is that the color must be defined twice - first as TeX's 'COL', later as MP's 'col'. As far as I know, the 'COL' must be defined inside TeX code as colored text in MP is achieved *only* by calling TeX's "btex \a-color-family-command[a-color][some-text] etex". I already asked this in april, but got no answer, and now I need it again: I need my marginals as one line, rotated in the inner margin (that works) AND ( "hanging" from its place (at the moment it’s "standing") OR aligned to the top or bottom of the text area. ) AND several marginals must not overlap. I discovered that I can use \defineframed so that I can write \defineframed[myframed][frame=off,background=myoverlay] \myframed{whatever} But I'd like to have "my" counterparts of \inframed, \mframed and \inmframed. context on miktex problem: databases are not generated

The context installation on miktex is (again) broken. The problem seems to be that for all trees the databases are not generated: "resolving | not saving runtime tree ..." And so context and also the format generation breaks on machines where old databases don't exists with "! I can't find file `catc-ini.mkiv'." I made some test on my context-minimals installation and found out that I can recreate in a context-minimal installation the message "resolvers | resolving | not saving runtime tree 'XYZ' I only have to remove the !! before variables in the definition of TEXMF. E.g !!$TEXMFMAIN -> cache is created, $TEXMFMAIN -> cache is not created. So it could be that a wrong "Syntax" of TEXMF is the problem in miktex. But as I have no idea how in miktex context gets the TEXMF, is there a way to *force* the generation of caches for all trees with mtxrun? -- Ulrike Fischer

Hi, Line numbering does not work well with text backgrounds (with location=paragraph). sorted phone directory

I am maintaining a small vademecum for my workplace. One of the things it contains is a list of handy phone numbers, which should be sorted. Until now I have used the attached hack. It has worked reasonably well until the directory outgrew the one page. Before I start to modify my hack it occurred to me that ConTeXt most likely has a machinery for this already. It is a sort of register, after all. I have looked in the manual at registers and sorted lists but have not been able to find what I want. How to align \mframed correctly?

As the example below shows, \mframed part of the formula is placed too high. I found that \inmframed helps, but my question is: does \inmframed alter spacing? Parsing image pixels with lua

Hi list, I'm trying to create a ConTeXt document that searches for image-files (png, jpg, any, whatever... that's not important) in the same directory and processes all found images in a certain way. I'm pretty sure that parsing the directory should work with lua in ConTeXt, but I'm stuck at the part where I want lua to process the image. Is it somehow possible to get the color of an arbitrary pixel in the image (file) given the vertical and horizontal position of the pixel? I could process the images beforehand with another application (which does not yet exist) and write its output to ASCII files or something, but I rather avoid that. If that's the only possibility, how would I call another application while processing a tex file with ConTeXt? Thanks in advance for any hints, Stefan

Footer including "Page n of m"

I'm trying to recreate an MS Word document in ConTeXt. The reason for this is so the final document won't stand out from the others too much, and also so that I can have better control over the layout. One thing I'm having difficulty with is the footer, which consists of a rule, followed by "Name of document on the left << space >> Page n of m" where "n" is the current page number, and "m" is the total number of pages and is on the right. Is there an automatic way of obtaining "m", and what's the best way of preceding this footer by a rule? I have just installed TL 2011 and I would like to be able access to system fonts (which are found in directories under /usr/share/fonts/). It seems that mtxrun --script fonts needs each individual directory listed. How could make it under Fedora 14? [OT] Research into Generative Typesetting

Hi everyone, As some of you may know, in 2010 I attained a masters degree in New Media from the University of Amsterdam. Linked above are the PDF and HTML versions of the thesis, which attempts to examine generative typesetting (ie, going from one input into multiple outputs with various properties) through the lens of new media theory and the 'transductive' cybernetics of Gilbert Simondon. The introduction is particularly heavy with new media theory, but as the chapters progress I think it becomes more readable for those unfamiliar with this discourse. The 'Operating Systems' chapter was quite fun to write and hopefully contains some interesting history and reflections. One of the things this list might be excited about is the typography itself. I use many of Robert Bringhurst's suggestions, and I think the output is much the better for his advice.[^1] The HTML version was never totally finished (I'd prefer it to have JavaScript interaction and more Web-specific functionality). In fact, I had quite some plans for it, but as the deadline of the thesis approached, I necessarily poured my efforts more into content than presentation, and where presentation was concerned I was much more preoccupied with the Context version. All in all, I am happy with the thesis but I also know that it could use some work. If you have any feedback, please let me know. [^1]: If anyone is interested, I'm thinking I might make a module that sets up the environment according to these conventions. Because I was concerned with both PDF and HTML output, I chose to work in Markdown with Pandoc as my input format. Through the course of trying to manage a generative workflow, I had to make some unfortunate concessions: on the one hand, I had to process some of the input in order to get some basic things I needed, such as a blockquote environment for Context, handling the title page layout and abstract, among other things; and on the other hand I was forced to avoid bibliographic automation and instead had to be very careful to manually cite all my references. (This was because, at the time, Pandoc did not have the any capacity to do citation management that would work within HTML; with its new CiteProc support it seems that this is now feasible). Tagged PDF support is out of the question due to Pandoc generally only having MkII support, including lacking newer stuff like \startchapter..\stopchapter and \hyphenatedURL. The main conclusion I had about generative typesetting is that we are missing a crucial "glue layer". I have written some on a system which I call Subtext, a mutable translation layer where one is in control of both the syntax and the translation effects from a configuration file. Pandoc is great, but Subtext approaches the edge cases of generative typesetting differently by encouraging output-specificities without requiring anyone to learn Haskell to gain a little more control. Looking over Hans' new `m-markdown` code, I am beginning to see a clearer vision of how to go about implementing this. In recent versions (didn't test any other than the latest two betas, and only MkIV) the "3SIDE" imposition schema, written by Willi Egger in 2003, doesn’t work any more; the error says something about "the letter 6 is not a valid prefix". I have had it before, but had it just again, and it can make live quit difficult. Instead of \getvariable I had used \getvar on line 3206. But the error message of ConTeXt was pointing me to line 330. This makes finding and correcting errors a little difficult. -- Cecil Westerhof

Hello, is it possible to create multiline text only with \crlf, \par etc. inside a MP block? Background color of table cells?

I'm setting up a table, for which I'd like the first column to have a background of a middle gray. According to the wiki, something like this should work: \starttable[|p(4cm)|p(11.75cm)|] \HL \BL[1]\AR \VL\tfa{\bf A bit of text}\VL A lot of text, which will be broken up into several lines\VL\AR \HL \stoptable There are two problems here: (1) the background covers only the line of "A bit of text" and not the entire cell, and (2) the background color is too light. I experimented with this from the wiki: \starttabulate[|CR{red}c|CC{yellow}c|CM{green}c|CL{blue}c|] \NC test \NC test \NC test \NC test \NC \NR \NC test \NC test \NC test \NC test \NC \NR \NC test \NC test \NC test \NC test \NC \NR \NC test \NC test \NC test \NC test \NC \NR \stoptabulate but it produced no colors at all (and yes, I do have colors turned on). Squashing up lines?

I'm preparing a grant application, for which the template is given in MS Word, and for which the instructions are that the final application must be no more than 4 pages. I'm trying to re-create the Word doc in ConTeXt, and to keep within the page limit I'd like the text to be as tight as possible. This means: minimal space before and after an itemize environment, and between items. And also minimum space between lines. I'm using the Arial font, so as to most closely approximate the MS Word original. How can I do this? Thanks, Alasdair

Hi, I use euler.otf with texlive 2011. The expression $1\over\sqrt{{1\over b^2}+{1\over a^2}}$ is typeset with a wrong radical. Here: $$1\over\sqrt{{1\over b^2}+{1\over a^2}}$$ it seems correct. Beta also exhibits the same behavior. Is the font or the format, or, perhaps, something else? Thank, Eythan

\defineseperatedlist and working with variables and merging fields

Attached a tex file and the generated PDF. The first table is what I am trying to do. The second table is an example about what I would like to accomplish. I have two problems. Because there will be a lot of tables I like to use a variable, so that changes can be done in one place. That is why I would like to use: \getvariable{desc}{fieldHeading} on the third line of the table. But then I get one column instead of five. (The third is what I get, the fourth what I would like to get.) In the first and last two rows I would like to have the field take the complete row. trailing spaces in macro argument

Dear list, could anyone be so kind to explain to me why in the following MWE the trailing space are missing in the output of the \test-macro? Single page in landscape?

I'm sure this is a FAQ, but I can't find an answer which works. I have a document in portrait mode (A4), with one wide diagram - a Gantt chart, created with the gantt-tikz module, and which I'd like on a landscape page of its own. What's the easiest way to do this? I can do it by simply putting the chart on a page of its own and rotating it, but this is a bit of an ad-hoc solution. Thanks, Alasdair

Only show section numbering for \chapter?

Hello all, I'm trying to only show section numbering for chapter, both in the section head and content list. I tried several combinations of number=yes|no, sectionnumber=yes|no but I either get numbering for all or none. I tried using \title and \subject by they don't show in the content list. Weirdness with the names of files processed

Hello ConTeXist I met with great strangeness. When I was looking for a mistake in my source text, so I experimented and at one point I renamed myfile so that there are "+" in its name. At that moment compilation ran flawlessly. I know that the use of + in the filename is relatively non-standard, but even so I was surprised Now everything works fine, but I decided to send it as a curiosity rather than to be annoyed by someone. It's really strange and it took me a long time before I discovered the cause of the collapse of the compilation. Unfortunately I am unable to put together a minimal example, which worked, but it is interesting, that compilation will be OK in two cases: 1. when I rename the file to name without "+" or 2. when images are not to be found (for example when I comment the line which contain \setupexternalfigures[directory={flags/}]) Conversely, if "+" is part of the filename, while images are found, the compilation will collapse and prints a message that I mention below. I present here an minimal example (with message list), BUT THAT WILL NOT WORK because they do not have my library, but although the problem probably caused by my library, so it probably is not very important at this point because the problem is maybe a bit wider. Dear all, For the header text, I used \getmarking as follows: \setupheadertexts[][{\getmarking[{\v!title}]}] Then it showed title in the header as shown in the text which is bigger than default bodyfont size. minimals: How to prevent that core and modules become incompatible?

Dear ConTeXt folks, I just experienced a situation that I wanted to try a module, in this case TikZ [1][2], and I only had run `./first-setup.sh`, so the module and “core” were diverted and I got an error message. ! Undefined control sequence. system > tex > error on line 396 in file tikz.tex: Undefined control sequence ... \pgfutil@addpdfresource@colorspaces ...olorspaces {#1} l.396 ...rspaces{ /pgfprgb [/Pattern /DeviceRGB] } Running `./first-setup.sh --extras=all` fixed the problem for me, but not wanting to install all extras it is quite hard to insert/remember all extras installed on the system. math: formula alignment: confusion about `left` and `right` alignment

Dear ConTeXt folks, if I am not mistaken `autopunctuation` [1] should prevent the space after the decimal mark [2] like in »1,23« or »1.23«. Citing online sources

Good evening, what is the recommended approach to citing online sources? BibTeX does not understand the @ONLINE type, as opposed to BibLaTeX. Internet sources have other important information than book. For example here I want to show the URL in the bibliography, whereas for don't want it to be shown for books etc. Also the date of the last access is needed. This would be a nice format (first book, than online source): John, D. (2011). Johnny's big Adventure. 2nd ed. Made-Up-Publisher. Some Place else. Times Online (2011), Title of article. wwww.times-online.com/323/title- of-article.com (last access: 01.01.2011) Note also that the author field is not automatically abbreviated. Is there an approach to this or do I have to cheat in the bbl file in order to get the desired output? Regards, Christian

context doens't work in cli mode on ubuntu 11.04?

Hello everybody, I'm on Ubuntu 11.04 64bits, and try to generate a pdf without success. On ubuntu 10.10 64bit, it works perfectly, but after the upgrade, no ... So I ask you if you have any idea. math: using bold charaters for number sets

Dear ConTeXt folks, according to [1] the number sets were originally set using bold characters and only on the blackboard the double strokes were used. ConTeXt defines for example `\naturalnumbers` or `\reals` [2] which are set using double strokes. How can I redefine those to be just bold? Thanks, Paul PS: Does somebody actually use these commands (`\naturalnumbers`, …`) or do you define for example `\N`? mkiv and non-universal sans-serif kerning

Greetings, long-time reader, first-time writer here. I've been using ConTeXt for about a year and, until now, been able to solve all my problems using the wiki or the mailing list, so a "keep up the good work!" is certainly in order. ;-) My problem concerns kerning in mkiv, which apparently doesn't work for all sans-serif fonts. It does seem to work for TeX Gyre Heros and Latin Modern Sans, but not, as an example of a font shipped with ConTeXt, DejaVu. Here's a short testcase: \usetypescript[dejavu] \setupbodyfont[dejavu,12pt,rm] \starttext Token (kerned) T{\char"200C}oken (unkerned) {\ss Token (kerned)} {\ss T{\char"200C}oken (unkerned)} \stoptext (U+200C is the "zero width non-joiner", rather useful as an invisible breaker of kerns and ligatures.) Expected behavior: first line "To" kerned, second line "To" not kerned, third line "To" kerned, fourth line "To" not kerned. footnotes: is this a bug?

Hi all, this is something that has made me wonder: am I doing something wrong here, or is this a bug with footnote placement? Run the attached example, look at the last 2 pages, 5 and 6. On p. 5, the footnotes run off the page area. On p. 6, why is there so much space between text area and footnote area. The reason for this somewhat exotic set-up: our publisher wanted the footnotes of the last page of every chapter to start right after the text, not at the bottom of the page. In the end, I told them I couldn't do it, and they were fine with it. But I still think it should be possible; I've looked into a number of books, and it seems a common layout in the humanities. Maybe someone has a bright idea? (Wolfgang, you answered to this problem 2 weeks ago and suggested having "aftersection={\setupnote[footnote][location=high]}" in \setuphead, but this triggers the same problems). So maybe a bug? Hi Khaled, I took a look at the lunamark code, and ran it on some (copied) sample. As it was much slower than I'd expected from lpeg I messed around a little and could bring down the runtime on the sample from 2 sec to 0.1 sec. Anyhow, there is room for improvement so I wonder If I should take the code, wrap it up a bit, and make a module so that we can directly process markdown in context. (Of course we then need to keep an eye on how the original develops, if mkdown develops at all.) Using mycrotypography features with simplefont module and OTF/TTF

We have tried different things but did not see any difference in the results. problem with columnsetspan

Hi All, I wonder if you can help: I have been having a problem with \startcolumnsetspan when I was trying to create a magazine layout for a Uk psychodrama organisation.
