Hello, Here you see some white space at the left and the right of ".COM": \ss \framed[offset=overlay]{.COM} How can I remove this space in the right, correct, natural, smart, elegant, ConTeXtish manner? I have a workaround, but I find it a bit ugly: \starttext \ss \framed[offset=overlay]{\kern-0.07em.COM\kern-0.07em} \stoptext TIA for any hints! -- Peter

Two columns type problem

Simpleslides crash

mixing Greek and English texts

Hi there, I would like to typeset a classical Greek text that contains a Greek-English dictionary and other explanations in English with Greek passages. In order to get proper hyphenation, I should define English as main language and tag all Greek in the text. This is a lot of work. I need them to have line numbers in the notes, but this doesn't work with latest beta (adding \setupnotation[significa][number=yes] doesn't work either). How can I have line numbers in the line notes? In both line notes groups, there can be many notes that come from the same line. Would it be possible that the number is only printed on the first note from each line? I mean, instead of having: 1 lugar: place 1 nombre: name 2 querer:want 2 acordarse: remember it would be extremely helpful to have the following option: 1 lugar: place nombre: name 2 querer:want acordarse: remember How could this be achieved? In the sample above, \significa is a kind of dictionary in each page. I wonder whether it would be possible for these notes to be displayed in two columns and alphabetically ordered. According to the ConTeXt Reference Manual, items can be displayed in columns and there is a sorting mechanism for lists, but I don't know how this could be applied to notes. Is this possible? wrong footnote number with latest beta

ConTeXt Standalone contents

I am currently in the process of moving the production of our journal and book series from MKII to MKIV and suspect that I now have items in my personal texmf folder that are no longer needed because they are included in the distribution installed using sh //first-setup.sh --modules=all. So I was wondering if there was a listing somewhere of the fonts that come ready to use with MKIV in the ConTeXt Standalone distribution. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. I have checked the wiki but have not yet found what I am looking for. Alan

Hi ConTeXt user's, Sorry about this question, but I want to find out to whom I should turn with the ConTeXt problem I have? I've started two threads ('Cross-document referencing not working!' and 'Cross-document referencing: How to?!') recently dealing with a cross-document referencing problem, but didn't get suggestions on how to get it solved. Perhaps it's just a minor issue!? I got one confirmation of the problem running a simple test file. This feature (described in detail in "This Way", sep 2011 (http://pragma-ade.com/show-mag-15.htm)) is critical for a project I'd like to start! But maybe this is not the right place to ask questions like these, but where should I go, if that's indeed the case? Maybe I'm not patient enough! Regards, Gerard Verhaag

Hi there, I have just installed the latest beta using ConTeXt Standalone. Many thanks for the great work. I have a question: the wiki explains that the system fonts should be set in Linux with "export OSFONTDIR="/usr/local/share/fonts;$HOME/.fonts" (http://wiki.contextgarden.net/ConTeXt_Standalone#Font-Dir) It should be set after "# TODO: we could set OSFONTDIR on Mac for example", but I'm afraid I don't have such a line on my tex/setuptex file. Hi, in yesterday’s Context, text backgrounds between floats cover the highlighted text (text is still there, but behind the color layer). How to make Figure captions justify if long?

Hello, The title is not self explaining, I'll try to do this. My layout style require that table or figure captions stay centered only if short. If long, it needs that the caption be justified (like normal text, but less width). In LaTeX, I know that this works on article document class, like the pdf file I attached shows. -- Wagner Macedo

Questions on Table of Contents

Hey folks, I am familiar with the \completecontent command, but was wondering if there is a way to also typeset just a summary of the table of contents (e.g. just chapters and no sections, sub sections, etc.)? I've also noticed that all of the colours in my table of contents appear to be the same. I don't know if it has always been this way or if it is a recent bug or something has changed in ConTeXt. Regardless, I wonder if someone could tell me how to customize the colours of the various parts of the table of contents, such as the chapter/section number, the name, and the page number it starts on. no liga with Brill font

Hi there, there is a zero-cost font (not available for commercial works without previous permission) from Brill (http://www.brill.nl/news/brill-typeface) Standard ligatures such as fi and fl don't work: \usemodule[simplefonts] \definefontfeature[default][default][script=latn] \setmainfont[Brill] \starttext fi fl ff ffi ffl \stoptext The glyphs are defined (ﬀ, ﬁ, ﬂ, ﬃ, ﬄ), but when I test ligatures with FontForge (Ctrl+K) these glyphs aren't used and single substitution lookups in different subtables are performed for the different ligatures (actually no ligatures are used). Sorry, my explanation isn't as accurate as it should. I'm not a font expert, but Substitutions can be browsed in FontForge selecting the glyph info (Ctrl+I). with some recent beta (sorry for vagueness), tikz stopped working after titles. (i use first-setup.sh to install: these are the betas, not something different, right?) xtables: vertical stretch

Well, I stumbled on the very first basic problem! Using the \useexternalfile[logical_name][filename] resulted in an Undefined control sequence ... error message!? Problem with letter module

Hi, I am writing a letter with the 'letter' module (mkiv and last beta) and the \encl{} command doesn't work anymore. I know that the module has been rewriten recently but I can't find any doc or examples of the new syntax. I tried to look at the source code but it doesn't help. And then I put a cow on to the page ... but it should be on the top/left-corner of the A5-page instead of the A4-page: I know, one posibility would be to use x=... and y=... in \definelayer. Graphics positioning problems in current/recent betas

I have been studying the Details manual and have found that many of the examples presented there do not work correctly with the current or recent betas. The ones I have tested work correctly on texshow and with the Texlive 2011 (MkIV Luatex) version. 1. Hello all, I am presenting an answer rather than a question, for a change. (Though as usual it's about bibliographies.) Last November, Renald Buter posted a question about how to suppress the full stop which follows a publication title in the case where the publication title itself ends in a question mark -- this produces entries like Authorname, A. (1990) A rhetorical question?. Journal of etc. etc. which doesn't look nice. At the time I gave some untested suggestions. Now (due to a sharp-eyed thesis examiner) I've actually had to test and implement a solution. For anyone else with this problem, I've written it up at http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Question_marks_in_bibliography_entries . As usual with BibTeX-y things, it's a hack, but it does the job. A bug in latin modern fonts?

Hi! The following example seems to have some troubles with the latin modern fonts: \starttext The function $f \colon \reals \to \reals$ is given by $x \mapsto x - 3$. \stoptext The colon is printed fine, but the blackboard bold Rs don't look correct. The \mapsto symbol is missing and there's a hyphen instead of minus. Are others having the same issue? I tried to do a fresh install, but the problem persisted. There were some messages like fonts > otf loading > skipping cyclic reference U+00028 in math variant U+00028 during compiling. I don't know if they are related to the problem. Thanks, Janne Junnila

First-page layout is an issue that I have asked about before, but maybe I am doing something wrong. Set a block of content at minimum distance from top of page?

Hi ConTeXt list, I have a document with a graphic (logo) in the upper right corner (positioned on a layer and placed as a background). To the left of this graphic are several text elements (Title, Author List, etc.) that don't go all the way across the page. (Currently I have wrapped them in \startnarrower...\stopnarrower -- is there a better way?) But this is followed by an Abstract paragraph that uses the full width of the page. I would like to ensure that the full-width text never starts high enough on the page that it encroaches on the upper-right-corner graphic. So, I'm looking for a way to protect the graphic, or to force the Abstract to start a minimum distance from the top of the page. The Abstract can be forced down the page if necessary by manually inserting a \godown[] command before it, but I would prefer a programmatic solution. Floating the graphic and wrapping text around it does not seem like a good option, because I want to ensure that its position is absolute and it never moves. Also, the Abstract needs to be full-width throughout, so I need to force it to start after the graphic rather than partially wrapping it. Any suggestions appreciated... Hello, Here's a long-standing problem I have with BibTeX databases in ConTeXt Mk IV (I'm currently using version 2011.10.01). If there are multiple publications with the same authors and year, they get suffixes a, b, etc. as is usually expected in bibliographies. Unfortunately these suffixes appear even if only one of the works is actually cited. Minimal example: ==> test.bib <== @book{book2, title = {The second book}, author = {Ann Author}, year = {2000}, } @book{book1, title = {The first book}, author = {Ann Author}, year = {2000}, } ==> test.tex <== \setupbibtex[database={test},sort=author] \setuppublications[sorttype=bbl,refcommand=authoryear] \starttext % \cite[book1] % uncomment to demonstrate ordering problem \cite[book2] \placepublications[criterium=text] \stoptext This gives a citation of Author (2000a) despite there being no Author (2000b). A related problem is that even when both suffixes are used, they are applied in the order of the original .bib file rather than in the order of the typeset bibliography. So if \cite[book1] is uncommented in the above example, the bibliography contains Author (2000b) followed by Author (2000a). I'm guessing that problem is that the whole BibTeX file is processed into ConTeXt's \startpublication...stoppublication syntax, not just the cited works. I can't see a way around the this, other than creating a custom .bib file for each document with the problematic entries removed or re-ordered. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks, Pont

Dubious "checksum mismatch" message on log file

Hello, please consider the following example: <example file="ex8.tex"> \starttext \font\test=txr \test abs \stoptext </example> I process this document with context (context --version -> 2012.01.25) nothing suspecious in terminal output but in log file I see "checksum mismatch", <terminal> $ grep 'checksum' ex8.log checksum mismatch in font txr.vf ignored </terminal> Simple plain tex file <example file="ex9.tex"> \font\test=txr \test abs \bye </example> processed by luatex and pdftex engines (both from TeX Live 2011, I don't know how to generate formats for them in context suite) doesn't give same message. Is it a "bug" in font system of context? P.S. There is a thread on tex-live mailing list about "checksum mismatch", I took a little investigation that reveals the source of problem: 'luaotfload', adaptation of context font system for latex world. As you can see from "ex8.tex", current context have the same behaviour. Problem with Lua processing UTF8 substrings

Hello ConTeXist, I want to use Lua to write characters (substrings) from a string, but I get an error message: ! String contains an invalid utf-8 sequence. I tried various Lua functions for working with UTF8 strings for example: string.subutf8(string, start[,end]) for i, char in str:nextutf8(orig_pos) string.lenutf8(string), but without success. With the current (2011.05.18 22:26) everything is fine. Using [number=no] with the beta the numbers disapper, while the current prints out the numer (and again a mess in the ToC). http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Reference/en/setupheads says that the right command is sectionnumber, but it's obviously outdated. If I change the font, add \agr to the text, change the script or remove Latin for the default font feature, GSUB no longer work. Links in TOC not working properly?!

Hi, I installed the newest upgrade of ConTeXt, but processing my files yields strange results! In an interactive document the links to the different sections are not working any more. Problem Citing a Definition

Hey list, I am trying to cite a definition typeset with a \startdefinition[definition:foo] and \stopdefinition pair. I am doing this by using a \in{definition}[definition:foo]. That works, but in the text I just see linkable text "definition". I'd like it to be more descriptive of the physical location in the book, e.g. "foo in section 10.2". Hi all, to bring some traffic to the list I have a question where I hope even non regulars send a answer. The ConTeXt package is huge and provides dozen of commands but I guess many have *one* favorite command (maybe also functionality). As I started this thread I’ll present my favorite command which is \donothing, it is a internal command and only a synonym for \empty but it’s one reason why I prefer ConTeXt’s coding style (especially with the recent changes in MkIV) over the unreadable LaTeX code. My favourite command chooses to remain anonymous for now. All it has agreed to disclose about itself is that it gives total control over margin notes, in particular placement & page breaking... In case an ID is required for attendance, I think I'll go for \setCJKmainfont, representing Unicode support and simple way of choosing fonts across scripts, which is a "deal maker" for me... I'm afraid this might be a bug. BTW, how can I get a table of contents with heading that doesn't contain subsections? Canonical way to escape the square brackets?

Dear list, I swear I searched the internet, but I guess the terms are too generic. The question is: is there a safe way to escape the square brackets, preventing them to be eaten by the previous command? For example: \item [this should be in brackets] My solution is: \define\leftsquarebracket{[} \define\rightsquarebracket{]} \item \leftsquarebracket this should be in brackets\rightsquarebracket I'm pretty sure there is already a built-in command for them, so I'm asking the list. Scaling of math glyphs

Hi, In my opinion, the size of the \sum in Cambria in display style is too large. I know that this is a design decision on part of Cambria designers, but I am wondering if I can scale the glyph down. I made a local copy of cambria-math.lfg and changed FixDisplayOperatorMinHeight to local function FixDisplayOperatorMinHeight(value,target,original) table.print(target) local o = original.mathparameters.DisplayOperatorMinHeight if o < 2240 then return 2240.0 * target.parameters.factor else return 0.8 * value -- already scaled end end This works, but as expected, it scales down both \sum and \int. Hi List, I am trying to program with Lua but there are concepts I must not understand, and the documentation is somewhat lacking. The only useful thing I could use is Hans' manual, thanks to him. xtables: stretch a single column

Hi, xtables offers option=stretch to stretch the whole table evenly. Is there also a way (without manually calculating the width) to stretch the whole table using a given column? Short use case: I have a table with three columns. Column 1 has an external figure, column 3 a variable length (but still short) text/string and column 2 has either no text at all or maybe a longer phrase. Columns 1 and 3 should be auto-sized (i.e as small as possible) while column 2 should be as width as necessary, to make the whole table fit perfectly onto the page (width-wise; height doesn't matter for now). I think with natural tables it was possible to set width=broad for a certain column. Is something like that possible with xtables as well? Thanks! -- Best Regards, Andreas

"overscored" or "overlined" text … (or whatever it should be called)

Dear all, I am trying to reproduce with ConTeXt an old french text that contains numerous abbreviations, mostly of two types: - words cut off by means of a "period", with the last letter of the complete word as a superscript above the period. - "overscores" --either for single characters, for instance in words with double consonances, like "comme". One of these is sometimes omitted and replaced by an "overscore" on the previous vowel -- or on an entire abbreviation, such as "coe" for "comme" and "nre" for "notre"; they become coe and nre overscored. Now I would like to reproduce these as closely as possible. For the "period + superscript letter" I found a solution: \lohi[]{\cdot}{t} (for superscript t), nearly perfect. The only imperfection I can see is that the dot sits slightly below the baseline. Is there a way to get it on the baseline? The overscore on a single character presents no problem. For an overscore on a complete word I have not found a solution. Three individual overscores on a three-letter word give a broken line; I do not know how to merge the three line components. (Incidentally, this hack does not work with mkiv) The other solution I have tried is to put the word in a frame with a top-frame only. But this way the word (abbreviation) hangs underneath the base-line. Using \inframed instead of \framed makes no difference. There appears not to be something like \setupinframed. Hi everyone, This minimal example causes my luatex process to spin consuming 100 percent cpu (latest minimals, freebsd 9): \setupbackend[export=yes] \starttext hello world \stoptext To rule out any issue with FreeBSD 9, which is fairly recent, I compiled my own luatex binary from the svn trunk but still experienced the problem. Adding \startparagraph and \stopparagraph also produced the same result, but with slightly different output after interrupting the compilation process. bug on margin data and line numbering?

Hi there, when I try to add margin data to a line numbered text, this line is not counted or numbered. I have a layout using a columset and grid. When I insert a formula into a column of text, the text following the formula is not snapped to the grid, and the next paragraph is not indented. How can I make the text return to the grid after a formula? \externalfigure and file size

Hey list, I have a number of \externalfigure commands to typeset some svg images. This is often handy to have them vectorized because it allows for the user to zoom in on diagrams of great detail. In other situations, I find that for images that are not so important, they would benefit from ConTeXt rasterizing them when they are imported. The reason for this is I find some vector images get enormously bloated when they are typeset. As an example, I have a Logo.svg of only 6.8 KB. The m_k_i_v_Logo.pdf intermediate ConTeXt generates is nearly a megabyte in size. Why? I have no idea, as they both appear to be the same image with the same gausian blur. Is there a flag I can pass certain instances of \externalfigure that tells the image processing backend that a simple rasterized version of the figure is fine? Or is there a better approach? Hi, I uploaded a beta to the website. The most important upgrades concern the font subsystem. - there was still some mkii code around ... all that has gone ... as a consequence all code has been overhauled (a rather tedious job) ... some code might be a bit faster (but nothing fundamental changed) - designsizes are now dealt with in a different way but as only lm has them no one will probably notice .. anyway it saves a lot of definitions and (at least on my machine) the start up is somewhat faster - the type-otf file is no longer used but its content has been distributed over a some smaller files ... loading these files is rather automatic and it should be compatible .. again this might give a (small) startup speed improvement (and a bit less memory which quite certainly goes unnoticed compared to the average memory usage) - bodyfont environments are a bit more flexible now which was one of the reasons for rewriting much code as there is some complex inheritance and defaulting going on there - Wolfgang is adapting / extending the simple fonts code but in principle it should still work In addition, the lists related code has been reorganized / redone and it seems to be ok. There have been some conceptual changes to the list rendering (easier for future extensions) but old commands still apply. It's anyhow still somewhat experimental. Of course there are some fixes and other cleanups done. After updating to the current beta, I discovered that the \note macro does not format the note marker correctly. In the minimal example below, I define an item group for a paragraph-formatted list of article authors, and an "affiliation" note for a paragraph-formatted list of affiliations below them. (This is fairly common in academic journals; I have left out most of the text formatting.) The note marks for the third and fourth authors (Jones and Mandrell), which are created using the \note macro to reference previous affiliations, are too small and not bold. Footnote marker inside custom list environment - font problem

Hello, Maybe this is related to the problems with \definenote posted recently...I have played with setups but have been unable to figure this one out. I have a custom enumeration environment to display the names of journal authors in a paragraph format, with local footnotes for their affiliations. Since updating, it no longer works as expected; the footnote markers after author names use the document roman font instead of the sans font. Hi there, I'm trying to get a header that contains the numbers of first numbered line on each page and the number of the last numbered line on that page. This is especially useful for poetry. Centring rotated float

I discovered some problems centring a float which is rotated using externalfigure. Without rotation everything is fine. However, when the orientation option is provided, the frame doesn't match the figure any more and the centring gets lost. Using the dedicated rotation command works. (I haven't checked all languages, but it works with la, en, ru and es.) I'm using MkIV from TL2011 and I don't know whether there is a newer command. \startitemize[columns] broken with backgrounds?
