Using MPgraphics as externalfigures?

Hi All, I'm being a bit clueless about the MPgraphics again... I've got a pile of instructional graphics that will be used and reused in a project. My first try is/was an unwieldy buffer construction, but I'm sure there's a better way than \placefigure[here] [fig: 5 loop departed setup] {The start position for a 5-loop braid with departed loops} {\framed{\getbuffer[setup 5-loop basic]}} Come to think of it, is there another way of framing the incoming graphic? I don't want to include the frames in the MPcode as I may not always want them, but that \framed{\getbuffer} construction is downright ugly. I think the solution to my problem can be found somewhere in the \startreuseagleMPgraphic and \reuseMPgraphic, but I don't seem to be able to figure out the last bits... On the moment my MPgraphics have \startbuffer[g1] \startMPcode ... \stopMPcode \stopbuffer but that's probably an overkill... And I'd really prefer to have the graphic as just a pic so I can easily use them as external figures. Of course one option would be to pdf the MPgraphics and then to insert the pdf, but I'd prefer to skip that step. Any ideas of how to do this in a smart way? Preferably without having to go into the bowels of ConTeXt to get it done... Thank you, Mari

author-title cite command

Dear list, I'm trying to come to grips with creating a customized author-title cite command, based on this[1] thread. I was wondering how I can check on the value of the [artauthor] or [author] fields extracted by \getcitedata? Eventually I'd need a footnote citation style that prints a full citation for the first reference and then uses a author-title style for the subsequent ones: For @incollection only author and title of the article, for @book the author and title of the book. Which is why I'd need to for the existance of an artauthor… Or how can I just grab the bibtex-type? \getcitedata[bibtype] doesn’t seem to return anything. I guess this should be quite easy for someone more experienced. alternative command for lists

I stumble overt the fact, that ConTeXt seems to forget all parameters set in \setuplist once you issue alternative=command, command=… Could anyone of you enlighten me whether I miss something? Hi Everybody, First off, my actual interest is in Lua(La)Tex. It seems that several key features of OpenType are not yet supported by otfload. My direct interest would be GDEF and GPOS. From my understanding of things is that such things are first developed on the Context side the pulled in by LuaTeX. I will be setting up a drive with a Mac OS, and the Context source distro, just to kept things safe. I already have the LuaTeX source distro. I have started into OT-Specifican 1.6. I have started going top down into the lua source in the normal MacTeX 2012 distro. Just to learn how things are getting done. So here are my Questions 1) Is GDEF still not supported in font.loader 2) Is GPOS still not supported in font.loader 3) Are there any Program Specifictions anywhere to be had and where 4) Any Class diagrams, flow charts, UML or similar documentation and where for font manager and even Context or LuaTeX 5) Any of 3 and 4 in the source distribution? 6) Is the font.loader mainly in Lua or C? (I have not gotten that far yet?) (only a couple hours of work done) 7) Can I safely assume that at that there enough modularization in the code sothat I can work bottom up? That is add thing needed to the font.loader{} and font{} 8) Is there any special natural language convention when discussing Context inorder to differentiate between OT-Font-Table and Lua-Tables and data structures? I have self-taught myself LUA form the online reference(far from proficient though, but the lua sources for Context and LuaTeX will get me there fast or i will just fake it. Been around programming since mid-eighties, Have learned some 20-30 programming languages( Pascal, Modula2, Cobol, PM-L, Prolog, LISP, Perl, C, C++, Objective-C) just to mention a few. linenotes: possible bug and feature request

So, the body contains “Sedentia” when it should read “Sed entia” (the same happens with praeter neccesitatem). I'm afraid this is a bug. The feature request is an option in linenotes that only number in the first linenote comming from the same line. You have this practice at line 7 from http://context.aanhet.net/epen2007/share/idris/cr-apparatus.pdf#page=46 and line 81 from http://context.aanhet.net/epen2007/share/idris/cr-apparatus.pdf#page=49. Left margin of vim module output

inheritance of footnotes

dear list, until some months ago it was possible to define/setup a series of notes and then use them as kind of interface, i.e. to let their copies inherit their setups yet be independent sets of notes – However now such copies seem to be get mereley added to the set of notes they are based upon. -- In the following minimal example none of the notes get printed when the "first" series of notes are not placed; on the other hand their respective "\placenotes"-commands are completely ignored. [***SPAM***] Problem with simplefonts, placing of period

Hi All, I am experiencing a problem with the placement of the period "." after a sentence. In the example below it's the one after "(Englisch)." Once the line \setscript[hanzi] is uncommented, the period sits under, before or far after the closing bracket depending on borders or text before/after. The question is: Is that a bug or feature? The key impact of setscript I see is on spacing/flow of text. A small amount of Chinese text in the complete document appears the same. Hi, my footnotes don't behave as they did three months ago ... I wanted the footnote's number left from the footnote's text, but these numbers should be right aligned: so that the ones (eg. in "1" and "21" and "201") are exactly on top of each other any idea how to achieve this? alternative=d gives "attr"

"a"): attr a) Test one 47 attr b) Test two 51 Any idea where this "attr2 comes from, and how to get rid of it?? Font recognition with command "context", but not with command "texexec"

Hi, this might be a very simple problem, but I tried to figure it out for some time now without success. Reading manuals, searching with Google, etc. did not help. So if it actually is very simple, I herewith apologize. I really tried to solve it without the mailing list. Here is the Problem: The command "texexec" ignores the bodyfont setup. When I process the following code \setupbodyfont[gentium] \starttext This little text is enough to demonstrate the problem. \stoptext with the command "texexec /filename/", the default font is used. Only when i use the command "context/filename/.tex", context uses the font gentium. The gentium font is a truetype font and stored on my system under /usr/share/fonts. I use Linux Mint Debian Edition 201204. My .bashrc file contains the following line: export OSFONTDIR="/usr/local/share/fonts;$HOME/.fonts;/usr/share/fonts" I use the standalone version of context with pdftex. The command \contextversion returns "2012.07.27 16:41", i.e. the time I last updated it. Using the mkiv switch did not help. texexec mkiv /filename/ Any comments are welcome. Best, martin

SVG?

Do recent versions of MKIV (specifically, the one in TeXLive 2012) support SVG graphics directly or is it still necessary to convert to PDF as in the wiki example? I've created a couple of items in Inkscape and can save them to PDF directly without the "automatic" background conversion but native SVG support would be better if it exists. Hello, I am a bit afraid to gain a nickname "the itemize-column guy", but it seems that again there's a problem with this feature... Unfortunately, I did not manage to isolate the problem, so maybe it lies somewhere completely else. Anyway, sorry for spamming the list again with a complete file of one of my documents (it's all Polish to most of you anyway;)), but it compiles succesfully, but very strangely (it looks like \vsize > \paperheight) on newest ConTeXt (it used to look just fine about three weeks ago). how to avoid CID Identity-H encoding?

Hi Hans, hi friends, while the PDF that are produced by MkIV show no problems, some applications that use these PDF files for post-processing have big problems with CID/Encoding Identity-H. For example (as far as I have understood) german umlauts eg. "ä" are not recognized anymore but split in eg. "a" and diaeresis (with a space between?). I was told, that other PDF creators have an option to avoid using this kind of encoding. Is this also possible with MkIV? Thanks, Steffen

There is also an updated status-mkiv document: files done 644 files todo 314 files pending 21 (some day) obsolete 2 total 981 So, I have some files to go (mostly lua files) before I pick up the column thread. The memory footprint should be somewhat smaller for non cjk usage. (format generation as well as runtime) and the format file is some 10-15% smaller now. Struggling with custom title command

Hi, my document was compiling fine with an old beta (guess it was from late may - early june). I'm confused again. :\ When do you use a \defineSOMETHING instead of \setupSOMETHING ? Must something be "\define"'ed before it is "\setup" or is it the other way around or is one required or one not or.... Reading the manual and wiki just leaves me more confused since examples are given which use one OR the other but don't seem to require both. Or am I missing something again. Reading the pages for the individual commands doesn't help since it is often the case the page detailing the "\define" commands mostly seem to imply "\define" inherits from "\setup". Hi all, To load the lua functions in a file mycode.lua, I can use one of these two commands: \registerctxluafile{mycode}{0.1} \ctxloadluafile{mycode}\ Here 0.1 is the version number, which is only recorded if `environment.initex` is true. As far as I can tell they differ only in this: the second command registers mycode.lua as having version number `nil`. Questions: 1. Can these commands be used ad-hoc, or should they be reserved for module-writing? (1b. If reserved, what alternative for users?) 2. Is anything ever done with the version number? 3. Database module gives an error

Hello All, I'm looking for some "for dummies" information about using variables. I tried looking for it in the wiki, but only found this "Internals" page that's a bit too advantaged to me: http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Inside_ConTeXt#Using_variables I'm obviously missing something important, so I'd love to see a few more examples of variables and variable input files... What I want is price tags with the item name in Finnish and English/Swedish and then the price. These are placed on a small page and those small pages are then fit onto one A4 by imposition. Like this: Pieni nyörihaarukka, koivua %variable 1,v-descr-fi {\em Small lucet, beech} %variable 2, v-descr-en 6 eur %variable 3, v-price1 Made in xxx %variable 4, v-origin I can do the imposition, that is not a problem - and it works a lot better than a table, so no tables this way... . My data is in a list that can be converted to csv (although it'll then have a bunch of quotes to be removed), the list format is just like above: Item in Finnish, Item in English, price, country of origin. So the main problem is database/mailmerge/variablerelated: How do I (or should I) use variables to fetch this information from a separate spreadsheet type file, i.e. my price list? (IF this was MS Word or OpenOffice, it would be called Mail Merge, but in OO it sucks a bit; and I think the operation itself should be easy if I just figure out how to do it... Thank you, Mari

Small caps?

Hello. I'm a veritable noob to both TeX and ConTeXT, so please bear with my ignorance. I request your kind guidance. (BTW as I use Indic scripts a lot, my typesetting engine is XeTeX.) I want to produce small caps like those I can get in LibreOffice by doing Right Click > Character > Font Effects > Effects > Small Capitals. Basically the capital letters would be shown in their regular size and the small letters would be shown as small size capital letters. Using \sc seems to select a particular font and ignore my current font selection. (I am using DejaVu Sans Condensed font.) \kap or \cap seems to produce all small caps which is not what I want -- only the small letters in the text should be shown as small caps and the capital letters in the text should be left alone. Can anyone please advise me what to do to get small caps in my current font like in LibO and other popular GUI word-processing systems? Thanks! -- Shriramana Sharma

Bug with rule between columns in columnset

Hi, this seems like a bug in the MetaFun or column set code. Printing a vertical rule between columns fails with ! terminal: >> NOfTextColumns-1 ! Too large value of \definecolumnsethsize

Hi, the following test file has a weird page break, caused by a too wide image set with \definecolumnsethsize. I am talking about the blank space at the right of the image. \definecolumnsethsize defines a with of 202.01262pt, that's too wide, 202pt would be correct, I guess. Is that a rounding error? If the figure width is slightly decreased (see the commented part), the first page looks as intended. But that's exactly what the command \definecolumnsethsize is for -- to get the correct size. Another workaround is to define the column width, so it is a know value. The behaviour is reproducible in all betas. Hello all, I am here at TUG 2012 updating the presentation that I am to give in the morning. I have had a couple of lingering questions regarding simpleslides that I thought I would put out there. They are not show stoppers, and I have lived with them in my other presentations. It is just that with my brain on TeX (and ConTeXt) for the past few days, I thought that I would try to resolve them once and for all. 1. Fonts I would like to specify separate mainfont and bodyfont using the simplefonts module (or some other consistent mechanism). I have read the thread from: http://www.ntg.nl/pipermail/ntg-context/2011/056495.html and have tried to split up Wolfgang's suggestion into the two parts. I have tried: \usemodule[simplefonts][size=18pt] \setmainfont[grandesignneueserif] \setupbodyfont[dejavuserif] which gets me the title font, but not the body font. The other approach: \definetypeface[mainface][rm][serif][DejaVu Serif][default] \definetypeface[mainface][ss][sans][DejaVu Sans][default] \definetypeface[mainface][tt][mono][Inconsolata][default] \setupbodyfont[mainface] also doesn't seem to work at all. I get what I believe to be Latin Modern Sans across the board. I have resorted to using one of the default fonts via the module switch for now, but would like to customize the font selection to my taste. 2. Margins I have the following slide, where only the right margin is affected. issue with module name "resume"

(apologies if this is sent twice, problem with mail) I am trying out the resume module mentioned on http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Curriculum_Vitae I saved the given code into a file "p-resume.tex" within the minimals folder (updated 20.7.2012), ran: context --generate When using it I consistently get told "module not found". If I rename it to eg. p-lebenslauf.tex, using \usemodule[lebenslauf] works as expected. I have created other modules in the same folder without problems. There is not other file with the (partial) name "resume" in the minimals folder. Is the word "resume" reserved? What is happening? Thanks! Hi there, after reading the reference manual on font switches, I still have a question. For my presentation I need to use a default higher font size: \usemodule[simplefonts][size=30pt] But given that \tfx and \tfxx scale the font to 0.8 and 0.6, I would need to scale the font also to 0.4 and 0.2 (at least to 0.4). This should contain the latest build. As I understand it, there has been an update to the letter-module, but there is currently no updated documentation available. Is this correct? Dear all, I am struggling with a sectioned Bibliography for a thesis. I think I may have found a, maybe not very elegant but workable, solution: I need three Bibliography sections: Books&Articles, Treatises and Music. I have a separate .bib-file for each (I use BibDesk but that is probably not relevant for my problem), of which I have ConTeXt create a .bbl-file. In the backmatter I include an unnumbered chapter, with three sections, in each of which I import its own .bbl-file and a file just containing all its \nocites. With \placepublications[criterium=local] it gives the desired result, but unfortunately only with mkii. It does not work with mkiv (of july 13 and earlier) and I need mkiv for the rest of the thesis. The example given below works with mkii but not with mkiv (of july 13 and earlier). With mkiv the following happens: With \placepublications[criterium=local] the sections remain empty. With \placepublications[criterium=text] only the first section contains data. With \placepublications[criterium=all] all trhree sections contain data but the content of the previous sections is added to the next. I also tried \placepublications[criterium=section] and placepublications[criterium=bysection] but sections remain empty. What can I do to get it, sections with individual Bibliographies, working with mkiv? Thanks in advance for any advice. two questions for the simplest slides

Hi there, I would like to create the simplest slides ever. I have done in LaTeX before, but I'm not sure how to do it with ConTeXt. All I want is to be able to center both vertically and horizontally whatever each slide contains and to change background and text colors in an easy manner (something like from now on background is red and text is white). Looking to http://tug.org/pracjourn/2006-2/schmitz/ and http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Presentations, I still have two questions. How can I get every single slide, no matter there is text or images, vertically centered? How can I change background and text colors after a \page? I mean something like: \setuppapersize[S6][S6] \setupcolors[state=start] \setuppagenumber[state=stop] \setupbackgrounds[page][background=color,backgroundcolor=red] \startcolor[white] \starttext Page is red and text is white. \page Page is blue and text is yellow. \page Page is green and text is white. \page Page is white and text is black. \page Page is red and text is white (again). \stoptext I mean, I know how to start, but I don't know how to change after the start. I cannot see the italic correction. Neither in the default not, nor in lucidaot. An explicit \/ (plain TeX material!) makes no difference. Addition of \setupitaliccorrection[always] also did not make a difference. What am I doing wrong? Some time ago, I faced a strange pdf output. For example, I want two steps inside the second item. So, I use the following: \usemodule[pre60] ... ... I have tested in many ways to know why the table disappeared after \StartStep. I found that it is neither the order of the code nor the some other settings. It is the level of the location of \StartSteps. If I put \StartSteps in the first level of itemization, there is no problem. The space around formula with \placeformula is a bit too large to my taste, even in the case of \setupformulae[spaceafter=small]. Because setting this to 0pt didn't make much difference, I had to resort to spaceafter=-1ex. Why is there seemingly always such a large space around the formula? Why not a much tighter boundary? Furthermore, it seems that there is no difference like above/below-displayskip and ditto displayshortskip as in Plain TeX. At least, I could not find it. Or did I miss that? figures: side by side and/or one above the other

Hello, I'm using context for an document with many figures. In some cases I have figures that should appear side by side and/or one above the other – but without combining them (\startcombination... \stopcombination). This I want to avoid because I'd like to give them a plain caption (like non-combined images) and because I would not like putting not directly related figures in a combination. In addition, when placed [left], combinations somehow center all sub-captions, though for single images they are left-aligned. (see http://pastebin.com/tZiNuekZ) Here is what I tried (and what went wron on the way) A) one above the other – so that I have the images on the left side of the page, while the text is on the right. I tried to archive this using the attribute [left]. The text floats aside of the one bottom image (someimage2), but not aside the one above it (someimage1). This code produces a working example: \starttext \placefigure [left] {caption} {\externalfigure[someimage1][width=0.5\textwidth]} \placefigure [left][fig:newton] {caption} {\externalfigure[someimage2][width=0.5\textwidth]} \input tufte \stoptext B) side by side I tried to work with columns here, but i was not successful. The figures often went not together and when a setup worked, the text did not continue to flow after the images but was starting on the next page. I hope there is a more robust solution out there. Creating it is easy, now. * There's a proper copy-paste skeleton for new command pages, now; you can copy it and fill in what you need with a minimum of fuss. It lives at http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Help:Command_reference. * Help:Command_reference is now linked from the [[Category:Commands]] page, so it should be easy to find when you need it. * No more interleaving your prose with <code> and <tt> tags: {{cmd|defineparagraphs|[LeftRight]}} produces a linkified and typewriter-fonted \defineparagraphs[LeftRight]. * Link to up-to-date versions of source files with {{src|m-ipsum.mkiv}}. Hi there, I have a rather general question regarding the options for math fonts in ConTeXt. As I understand from reading older posts to this list, there are currently efforts for making either pagella math or an updated modern font available. I am looking into this for quite some time now, but did not find a solution of my liking. I am currently using \setupbodyfont[modern-designsize] However, I like the rendering of latex's mathpazo a lot better, since in modern design the math font does not match the modern text font. Plain pagella currently is no option, since (i) fraktur is not supported (see P.S.) (ii) I am not happy with px math (integrals…) Another option would to use tex gyre pagella math (which is different from the currently available \setupbodyfong[pagella], right?!): ftp://ftp.mpi-sb.mpg.de/pub/tex/mirror/ftp.dante.de/pub/tex/fonts/tex-gyre-math/doc/presentation-tg_pagella_math.pdf As I understand I'd have to put the tff / otf files into a folder that is recognized by ConTeXt (right?!). However, downloading the zip from here: http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/fonts/tex-gyre-math gives me only the "regular" fonts (i.e. there is no math - or am I missing something?!) Are there any other options, is there someone listening, who was able to mimic mathpazo (I know about math times, but there's money envolved, which I'd rather like to not spend) and could provide me with a solution or are there other options, which I have overseen? I have had a look at the descriptions about handling fonts in the manual(s), but I did not really get into it. I'd have to come up with a solution of my liking in a couple of months (deadline). Your help is very much appreciated. columns in latest beta

I was writing a reply to Dalyoung, but Wolfgang beat me to it. So I'm going to ask a question myself: I'm a bit desperate about columns. I want nothing fancy, just a simple two-columns layout for a few pages. Unfortunately, the two betas I have on my computer both have trouble. 2012-06-30 complains about \column: "undefined control sequence." 2012-07-19 throws an error which I've never seen before: system > tex > error on line 901 in file reader.tex: Bad register code ... That's the line where I have \stopcolumns. Dear Woldgang and Marco, Thank you for your correction. It works after bracing the \externalfigure command. Now, I have to modify the numbers of header, footer, etc to make my style. I also change the order of "\setupexternalfigure[directory=...]" and "\usemodule[simpleslides]..." to apply the relational position. Now, I don't have to keep two mode "my own" and "simple slides". Dear Hans and Thomas, Thank you for the reply. First, I tried \setupbackgrounds [page] [background=yellow-spring, state=repeat] but, there is no change. After the change "page" to "text", my figure appears but it covers slide title. I couldn't test \setupbackgrounds [page] [background={yellow-spring,exist-thing}, state=repeat] yet. As you said, I think that the best way to use my own figure as a background in SimpleSlide is to make my own slide template. I found "simpleslides-template.tex" and I may try to modify it to make a style file. I hope that I can do it using other samples. Thank you again. Best regards, Dalyoung

Width of text in startcolumns environment (MkIV)

glyph outlines

Hello to everybody, how to draw character outlines for plotter to cut the letters out of the plate in mkiv? mmakempy.pdf is over 10 years old, so the situation could change since then. Anyway, even if I stick to the above method, the minimal example \starttext \startMPcode graphictext "Test"; \stopMPcode \stoptext doesn't work as expected in mkiv. *.mpy file is empty. In mkii error is issued during the run. Ignoring it finally produces the outlines, so it seems, everything needed is available (gs, pdftops, pstoedit). Anyway, mkiv way is preferred. A "Lorem ipsum" module?

Hi all, in LaTeX, there is quite a useful package called "lipsum", for typesetting varioud amounts of "Lorem ipsum" stuff. Is there anything like that in ConTeXt? (I know about \input knuth, \input tufte etc., but that is not exactly what I have in mind, especially when giving a sample of some design to a customer;).) If not (as I suspect), what should I do to write such a module? I expect this shouldn't be too difficult, and I could learn a few things (like using key-value syntax in ConTeXt, for instance); are there any recommendations for people wanting to learn to write a (simple) module for ConTeXt (other than the relevant wiki page)? Dear all, I have two questions. 1. I'd like to write various text in the header differently at every page. It is like "SlideTitle{}" used in the simpleslide module. I tried "\setupheadertexts[text]" at the beginning of every page. But only the text defined at last appeared at the header of every page. Is there a way to do such a job? 2. This used to work in earlier versions of MKIV, but does no longer—the page sets without complaint but the footer does not appear. Returning...need advice on manuals for MKIV

Returning after a long absence... Downloaded a fistful of manuals, concentrating on MKIV. One of these lists commands, and is dated 2012 which is promising. Many of these commands are not included in "Context, The Manual". So is there a manual or guide (or multiples) that expains these new commands? Let me put it a different way. If a person familiar with TeX but not Context wanted to use MKIV what documents beyond "Context the Manual" would that person need to understand and use Context for ordinary documents (like a book on another software project)? I use TexLive 2011 on a Slackware Linux platform. -- John Culleton

Broken for a while now...

I've noticed two things that seem to be broken in the betas, and they've been broken for a while now. \resetpagenumber \setuppagenumber[number=1] sets the page number to zero rather than 1. Also, the width= setting in \setuplist doesn't work anymore, either. I apologise if I sound like I'm whining. I just wanted to bring it to your attention. --DB

Hi, I uploaded a new beta. The usual fixes. New is a first version of a new multi column handler. Pretty experimental but eventually it will replace the current multi column routine, which is fact is then an instance, think of \definemixedcolumns [columns] \unexpanded\def\setupcolumns {\setupmixedcolumns[columns]} The simple columns routine is already replaced (by an instance) as is the multi column handler of itemize. bad kerning with Garamond

Hi, I've copied the files GARA.TTF, GARABD.TTF and GARAIT.TTF (Monotype Garamond) to the fonts directory and then regenerated the database. ancient greek module and footnote fontsize problem

Hi, I run into trouble with mkiv (ConTeXt ver: 2012.05.30 11:26 MKIV fmt: 2012.7.7 int: english/english). A small example: \starttext \def\c#1#2{\halign{##\hfil&##\cr\bf#1&\quad#2\cr}} \c{11}{this} \stoptext gives and error: ! Only one # is allowed per tab. This runs error-free under mkii (pdftex, xetex), plain tex (luatex, xetex), latex (luatex) etc. Would someone comment? Thank you, Eythan

Hi, Is it possible to place one box beside another, both with the same height, one box with an image of unknown width, and the other uses the remaining width.
