Tikz calendar problem.

Dear list, I have a problem with tikzCalendar on a recent installation. This minimal example : 8< ———————— \usemodule[tikz] \usetikzlibrary[calendar] \starttext This should works: \blank \tikz \calendar[dates=2000-01-01 to 2000-01-31,week list]; \blank but this does not ! \stoptext 8< ———————— should work, but does not. The problem seems to be here: open source > level 2, order 61, name 'tikzlibrarycalendar.code.tex' modules > 'pgfcalendar' is not found close source > level 2, order 61, name ‘tikzlibrarycalendar.code.tex' The file « tikzlibrarycalendar.code.tex » is read, but the file « pgfcalendar » seems missing. I have reinstall a new standalone version of ConTeXt, with all the modules (with the new script from ConTeXt Garden), but nothing works. Thanks for any help, Fabrice.

TOC with sections titles and page numbers like a paragraph beneath chapter

I am attempting to get a TOC that looks like the following (in other words with section titles and their relative page numbers in a block below the chapter): Chapter 1 ...................................................5 Section 1 5, Section 2 6, Section 3 7, Section 4 8, Section 5 9 etc Chapter 2 ................................................10 Section 1 10, Section 2 11, Section 3 12, Section 4 13, Section 5 14 etc As I really had no idea how to do this, I found https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Horizontal_Table_of_Contents thinking it might help, but none of it compiles (for me) in LMTX. So I tried something different, e.g. \definelist[chapter] \setuplist[chapter][label=yes,distance=1.5cm,alternative=c,style=normal,before=\blank] \definelist[section] \setuplist[section] [textcommand=\setups{SecToc}] \setupcombinedlist [content]o [list={chapter,section}] \startsetups [SecToc] \startframedtext [width=\textwidth, align=middle, frame=off] \placelist [section] [ criterium=chapter, ] \stopframedtext \stopsetups While that produces a result, it is nothing like what I want above. Has anyone put together a TOC of this kind and might be able to give me a hint to follow? Julian

Adjust width of section part of table of contents

Adjust pagenumbering while skipping first page

Dear list, after updating to current latest (from 2023.09.03 19:03), packed list doesn’t seem to work in LMTX: \starttext \startTEXpage[offset=1em] \startitemize[packed] \item item \item item \stopitemize \stopTEXpage \stoptext MkIV gets packed lists just right. Trimming (rearranging) long section name

Hello, is there a way to alter the section name to be " Specifické požadavky pro předpokládanou technologii stavby (přístupy, přívody el. energie, skladovací plochy, montážní a pomocné plochy, montážní a pomocné konstrukce, ...) " instead of " Specifické požadavky pro předpokládanou technologii stavby (přístupy, přívody el. energie, skladovací plochy, mon- tážní a pomocné plochy, montážní a pomocné konstrukce, ...) " IOW to force the word "stavby" not to cross the right border (see the green vertical line) but to appear on the next line? I played with "strict", "verytolerant" and similar options but they seem not to affect section titles. (MkIV solution preferably.) Best regards, Lukas

Different Layout for First Page

I have a document with the first page in startfrontmatter and all other pages in startbodymatter. The layout setting is as following \setuplayout [backspace=20mm, width=175mm, topspace=15mm, header=0mm, footer=2mm, height=275mm, bottomheight=1mm, footerdistance=10mm] \setupfootertexts [title] [\pagenumber{} of \totalnumberofpages] \setupfooter[state=stop] \startfrontmatter \input{frontpage.tex} \stopfrontmatter \setupfooter[state=start] \startbodymatter \input{introduction.tex} \stopbodymatter What would be the easiest way to change the layout only for the first page since it has no footer. For the first page, I would like to have the text run all the way to the bottom with \vfill where normally the footer would be. Thanks Jeroen

Bug or feature? \numexpression and hashes

Reinserting a section title followed by (continued) after a page break

I'm trying to use ConTeXt for playwriting, and I think it would be best to use sections for dialog. However, if a dialog's text is interrupted by a page break, it is customary to restate the character name followed by (continued) on the following page: --- open --- John My name is John, and I seek help with my --- page break --- John (cont'd) typesetting needs... --- end --- Maybe what I need is instead a mark? Here's a catch though, I will also need this to work for simultaneous dialog as well. This kind of dialog is represented by having dialog sections in columns: --- open --- Alice Bob John, you fool. John, you imbecile. --- page break --- Alice (cont'd) Don't you know that everyone uses Word to typeset their plays? --- end --- How can I do this kind of thing in ConTeXt? At the moment, I've been looking into adding a hook to shipout to prepend a section header with the last custom mark I've set. Even still, I don't know if this would work, or how to go about achieving this. If columns would be too difficult to implement, I'd be fine with living without (continued) support in them since they are pretty rare.

(feature proposal) link to attachments: /GoToE

Hi Hans, having attachments in PDF is very useful, but the vast majority of people don’t know how to handle them (even with the attachment pane displayed when Acrobat opens the document, or with file annotation). It would be really useful to have a link with destination that it would open the embedded document (when clicked). Since in its basic functionality, this is very similar to links to external documents (GoToR), I wonder whether it would be possible to implement links to embedded documents (GoToE, https://opensource.adobe.com/dc-acrobat-sdk-docs/pdfstandards/PDF32000_2008…) At least to begin with, only links to embedded children documents would be required. If this GoToR is generated by ConTeXt from "\goto{whatever}[destination-doc::page(15)]": 17 0 obj << /D [ 14 /Fit ] /F (destination-doc.pdf) /NewWindow true /S /GoToR >> endobj A GoToE destination for "\attachment[file=destination-doc.pdf, method=hidden]" would read: 1 0 obj << /S /GoToE /D [ 14 /Fit ] /NewWindow true /T << /R /C /N (destination-doc.pdf) >> >> endobj With EmbeddedFiles, the F entry from GoToR is a target dictionary (T key) in GoToE. The T dictionary contains the relation (R key) to the destination file (only C, child, needed) and the name (N) from EmbeddedFiles/Names for the attachment. This is the most basic implementation that allows to link to an attachment. What the spec describes as “a complete facility for linking between a file in a hierarchy of nested embedded files and another file in the same or different hierarchy” is probably unnecesarily complex (even to use). With file annotations, instead of the name from EmbeddedFiles/Names in the target dictionary, it requires the keys P and A (as numbers or strings). P gives the page number which contains the file annotation: zero-based as number, or named destination as string. A gives the annotation: zero-based index of the annotation in the Annots array, or NM entry value from the annotation object. As for the interface, it would be great that GoToR links could be converted automatically in "\goto{some text}[file::page(number)]" for attached files. This basic implementation of GoToE links would be extremely helpful to access embedded documents (believe it or not, this is something I explain almost every week at work). I would be happy to provide the code to implement this, but I’m afraid this is way beyond my knowledge. Many thanks for your help, Pablo

Hi all, esp. module authors! I went through the list of modules on https://modules.contextgarden.net/ (dl/) and the list that controls module installation for “--script install-modules". I removed all font-related modules from the list (not yet from the garden), since they’re probably all obsolete & outdated. Consider publishing typescripts in the wiki. The following modules don’t adhere to the necessary structure and need changes: * t-handlecsv (2023, Pablo) * metaducks (2021, Jairo) * presvoz (2023, Pablo) All of them have a name directory on top of the TDS (tex, doc). If you used a git checkout URL, please try again, for me it worked today. Several modules need testing if they still work and make sense. If their authors are present, I’d appreciate a comment if we should keep them. I’d like to delete at least everything older than 10 years. * grph-downsample.lua (2019) is known to fail in current LMTX (I hope for an integrated solution during the meeting.) t-degrade (2018) is AFAIK an older version of it – delete? * high (2018) and pret-c (2018) are syntax highlighters. Are they better than the vim and scite modules? Building luametatex with Lua symbols exposed

Hi, beloved list. Since sources are in the distribution, I've tried compiling luametatex by setting LMT_STRIP in CMakeLists.txt to 0, yet the resulting binary still warns about undefined symbols, such as lua_gettop, when an external library is loaded in Lua. XML: Correct usage of hash symbol in url

Hi, I need to process URLs in XML documents differently depending on the target. Thanks to Hans and Thomas I can now deal with the attributes. Now I need to prefix certain kind of targets with a certain URL (a web viewer for IIIF images in this particular case). The prefix contains a #, which, as a special character seems to cause an error. Fallbacks for design sizes in the current typescripts regime

Dear gang, Design sizes for typefaces -- aka "optical sizes" -- are no longer directly implemented in typescripts. From the manual Fonts out of ConTeXt by Hans Hagen, p. 109: "at some point the decision was made to kick out these definitions and move the burden of figuring out the right size to Lua." (Thus some large typescript collections painstakingly built over the years are now obsolete and have to be rewritten. Oh well..) But there is an issue in the new regime: In the old system, every typescript mapping to a font within a design-size range could have its own fallback. Hi, I have a long document [https://repo.or.cz/apunts-espa-matematiques.git/blob/HEAD:/ng-exercicis.con…] which I migrated from MKIV to LMTX version of ConTeXt. As Wolfgang recommened. I migrated old syntax to new one and replace \page[yes] before each section to \setupheads[section][style={\bf \ssc}, alternative=margin, page=yes] but now after each section there is a new page. your opinion about list structures

Hi, this is about my ConTeXt book again… [ToC] At the moment, my table of contents has chapters and sections and is 8 pages long. I would probably hardly use it. Maybe it would be better to show only chapters (29 content + 12 appendix = 2 pages) and include a list of sections after the chapter title (or not at all). [Registers] I split between command and topic index (9 pages each), because I find it annoying to have the commands between the topics. I also include the topics that are mentioned in titles in the index, because I hate it if I must look in two places. (Otherwise I wouldn’t think about omitting the sections from the ToC.) At the moment there‘s also an index of todo items, but that will disappear before print. [Glossary] There’s a short dictionary of technical terms in the appendix (8.5 p.). Each lemma is also included in the index. Should I add a list of abbreviations? (TDS, TEI, OCG, RAL, PDF, SVG…?) They’re in the index and explained where they matter – I don’t think the meaning of many abbreviations like file types is important. [Other lists] Should I include a list of colors, like the output of \showcolor[crayola]? (I think it would only bloat the book, and everyone can create the list themselves.) I have lists of supported languages (should get checked), fonts in the distribution and all math fonts, because these are not easily reproducible (AFAIK). So, what do you think, and how do you like to work with technical books? What kind of information (about ConTeXt or documents/printing in general) do you find hard to find? Hraban

Disable continued captions for table parts

Dear list, probably a stupid question, but is it possible to have a table splitted across pages without adding labels to all subsequent table parts except the first one? In my book I have captions above tables (\setupcaption[table][location=top]), so they are expected to behave like normal heading. Hi, is this a limitation or a bug? Text inside \quotation{} is not hyphenated. It appears to be like this for a couple of versions, but I'm not sure if it has always been the case. XML processing beginner's question

Low res output possible?

Just wondering: in programs like InDesign, Viva Designer, it is trivial to produce a low resolution pdf output (useful when exchanging a hi-res file with authors and editors prior to pre-print is difficult). I assume it might be possible to do so in ConTeXt. Currently I use a script (gs) to achieve that once I have the ConTeXt output so it is no difficulty, but if that could be done at time of compiling it would make the process just that bit simpler. If I have the following, with these linebreaks as in: {\par But a system cannot be successful if it is too strongly influenced by a single person. {\obeylines Once the initial design is complete and fairly robust, the real test begins as people with many different viewpoints undertake their own experiments.}} and opted to load another font, other than cmr that is, a \frenchspacing approach wouldn't be further required Bear with me here, in the current state, for example, and as long as say «…person.␣{\obeylines Once the initial is complete…» though feasible enough, leaves any prior \␣ at the mercy of whatever fontsize and/or set width happens to be. And this is just plain wrong. Likewise, if a word sequence such as \TeX\ occurs as in {\ss The separation of any of these four components would have hurt \TeX\ significantly. } The next sentence: «If I had not participated…» does not get any \nofrenchspacing which is equally and doubly problematic. It shows lack of consistency. And this ought not to be an ‹either› ‹or› scenario. But rather, an and conjunctional construct. It fails both ways. Furthermore, with the same token, if width is specified with a \setuplayout[width=15cm] Anything less than 12.895pt, especifically for that use case, wwould throw anything, particularly control sequences such as \TeX\ out of whack, and conversely, once a value of that very pt or pica or whatever is lowered, it brings that nonfrenchspacing right back on. And if width increments occur, then it follows that any control sequence kerning also gets thrown off as a result. It seems so far, that with lmtx, any standalone file, document, minimal working example that does not load cmr at the outset does not produce an acceptable outcome either. By saying acceptable I meant to say it namely from a typographical point of view. Nothing else. from the TeXbook 380-381 «\obeylines doesn’t say ‘\def^^M{\par}’, so we must make any desired changes to \par before invoking \obeylines. (2) The \uncatcodespecials operation changes a space to category 12; but the \tt font has the character ‘␣’ in the ⟨space⟩ position, so we don’t really want ␣12 . (3) The \obeyspaces macro in Appendix B merely changes the ⟨space⟩ character to category 13; active character ␣13 has been defined to be the same as \space, a macro that expands to ␣10 . This is usually what is desired; for example, it means that spaces in constructions like ‘\hbox to 10 pt {...}’ won’t cause any trouble. But in our application it has an undesirable effect, because it produces spaces that are affected by the space factor. To defeat this feature, it’s necessary either to say \frenchspacing or to redefine ␣13 to be the same as \␣. The latter alternative is better, because the former will discard spaces at the beginning of each line.» «In theory, this seems like it ought to work; but in practice, it fails in two ways. One rather obvious failure—at least, it becomes obvious when the macro is tested—is that all the empty lines of the file are omitted. The reason is that the \par command at the end of an empty line doesn’t start up a new paragraph, because it occurs in vertical mode. The other failure is not as obvious, because it occurs much less often: The \tt fonts contain ligatures for Spanish punctuation, so the sequences ?‘ and !‘ will be printed as ¿ and ¡ respectively. Both of these defects can be cured by inserting and «When INITEX creates a brand new TEX, all characters have a space factor code of 1000, except that the uppercase letters ‘A’ through ‘Z’ have code 999. zint 2.12.0 barcode generator

Hi all, I've updated the zint barcode generator on my mac mini to 2.12.0 and now no barcode is produced. I have this vague recollection that it is only the 2.10.0 version of zint which works in ConTeXt. If I am correct, is ConTeXt likely to be updated so that 2.12.0 works? I originally installed zint with Homebrew. There is a very complicated thread on stackoverflow on how to downgrade to previous versions of a formula in homebrew, but it is far too complicated for my wee brain. Thanks Keith McKay

If it had happened, I wouldnt' have had this issue with sizes say at 10pt and 11pt The permissions for these font files are 644 or read permissions only and I wrongly assumed this would be taken care of by the backend, but by the looks of it, it didn't. Is there a (simple) way to export the results of a \startMPpage ... \stopMPpage directly to a svg file? My current route is to import the pdf into inkscape, group path objects by stroke color, then save the result as svg and translate that into a hpgl format for the pen plotter. I guess/hope there is some hidden switch dumping the MPpage directly into a hpgl file ;-) .Floris

Hi, I would like a variant of cite per the APA specification that removes the bracket when quoted in mathematical definitions, theorems, etc. I could of course do it manually for reach using right= and left= but I didn't want to do it every time. Hi, I am trying to generate a table representation for some xml source. As the data structure doesn't directly correspond to the desired table structure, some manipulations via lua are required. So far everything works OK except table sectioning commands, like \bTABLEhead, \eTABLEhead, bTABLEbody or \eTABLEbody: it seems impossible to incapsulate them into lua functions. Hi, I uploaded a new lmtx (some new - experimental - things will be explained after the ctx meeting), but there's one thing that is somewhat important. In addition to the built in units we can now have so called user units. There is some more info about this in the lowlevel-registers manual. One of the predefined units is 'uu' with an associated \ununit (dimension) variable and it's is also interfaced to metafun. That means that when you use uu in metapost graphics you have to make sure that you save the meaning and/or numeric uu now. The idea is that just as in mp one can say 20xx with xx being a (sort of) unit, one can do the same in tex. Think of \newdimension \MyUnitA \MyUnitA 1.23pt \pushoverloadmode % just in case \newuserunit\MyUnitA ua % binds the unit to the variable \popoverloadmode x\hskip 10ua\relax x The units starting with 'u' are considered user units but be carefulk with other combinations as we have (and will have more) built into context ones, like pi : pi for Mikael ft : foot for Alan fs : (global body) font size tw : (layout) text width th : (layout) text height hs : (current) hsize vs : (current) vsize cd : (when set) column distance cw : (when set) column width cx : combination cell width uu : user unit (\METAFUN) So Mikael can now have test \hskip 3pi\relax test and Alan can have \setuplayout [width=1ft] to be consistent with inches. The reason why we have this mechanism is that it provides a level of abstraction. It might evolve over time but don't expect the 600+ units possible to show up because one needs sensible shortcuts. Already built in unit always win and you cna only bind to already defined quantities. Here's one for those who want to go beyond the normal: \newdimension \FooA \FooA 1.23pt \newdimen \FooB \FooB 12.3pt \protected\def\FooC {\the\dimexpr\FooA +\FooB\relax} So you can now figure how 'cx' is defined in a dynamic way. disable header for endnotes

I wonder if someone might be able to help me with this. I have a book in three parts and the author wants endnotes. No problem. I can produce those with \setupfootnotes[location=text] and then \placefootnotes. However, I would like the header to read 'Notes' on the recto page (or indeed be blank with no header), but I am currently getting the header that belongs to the main setup for headers, which happens to be: \startsetups[middle] \hfill \getmarking[section] \hfill \stopsetups \setupheadertexts [{\hfill\documentvariable{metadata:title}\hfill}][] [\setups{middle}][] How do I deal with the \placefootnotes command so that it ignores this and either gives me no header, or perhaps a new header with 'Notes' in place of [section] (which is achieved in centered position with setups[middle])? Placing identical images in a n x m grid shows extra space every two rows. Also the vertical and horizontal spaces are different. Hi, There has been some additions to itemize wrt columns. One problem with columns is that we have a 'cross page' and 'balancing' situation. The existing columns features has been improved a bit. That leaves the problem that mixing single and multi columns is not really tex's strong point. So, when Mikael and I were looking at one of his documents that mixes a lot of math into itemized situations, a different variant was made (ok, there was another reason but that's a bit technical). At that time, I had already adapted itemize to work a bit better with bTABLE and starttabulate (nesting, trial mode etc), think of \bTABLE \bTR \bTD \startitemize[a] \startitem \im{\sqrt{\frac{1}{x^4}}} \stopitem \startitem \startitemize[n] \startitem \im{\sqrt{\frac{1}{x^4}}} \stopitem \startitem \im{\sqrt{\frac{1}{x^4}}} \stopitem \stopitemize \stopitem \startitem \im{\sqrt{\frac{1}{x^4}}} \stopitem \stopitemize \eTD \eTR \eTABLE or with tabulate \startitemize[n] \starttabulate[||k2|] \NC \startitem test \stopitem \NC \startitem test \stopitem \NC \NR \NC \startitem test \stopitem \NC \startitem test \stopitem \NC \NR \stoptabulate \stopitemize so basically inside these tables items can be dealt with. Don't wonder too much how this translates into structure. This kind of columnizing has the advantage that esp with math that has different heights all aligns rather well. A limitation is that we number horizontally but that actually makes sense when we cross pages (I might cook up a transposed numbering but it's not entirely trivial). The first one who uses this other than Mikael is invited to wikify it. Hans ps. Very strange error:

After I run context (LMTX version) to my document (attached) I get this error: tex error > tex error on line 540 in file ./dev.tex: The file ended when scanning an argument. I don't know how to start... Can anyone help me? Thanks, Xavier PS: I receive this error after upgrading to MKIV to LMTX. Before with MKIV I get no errors.

Why overbar is so big

Pass string into text background graphic

Hi list, I'm attempting to make a stylized border around paragraphs that can span pages. The border runs along the side and the top. (Ideally the top border wouldn't repeat, but that's a minor issue.) The issue I'm having is that the title for the text doesn't always appear. side-by-side paragraphs broken?

Hi, in more recent versions of lmtx, the side-by-side mechanism appears to be broken; example below. The right-hand paragraph does not respect the margin and backspace setting. The output looks fine in mkiv and with older versions of lmtx (the one from texlive, so 2023.03.10). Not sure if this has been reported yet. Assuming that this is expected behavior, it appears to follow that fontfeatures cannot be invoked for \switchtobodyfont and the like, only from within the typescript read by \switchtobodyfont etc. ======= REQUEST: Since ALMFixed is already distributed with ConTeXt, could Hans make the fontfeature "arabic" default for this font? That is \switchtobodyfont[almfixed] should automatically a) give us Arabic-script bidi output (already there), b) exhibit Arabic-script features (missing) c) gives the same result for each size switch (already there) (Indeed, it would be useful to have *arabic-predefined typescripts/bodyfonts for a few other commonly available/used Arabic fonts as well. Scaling characters without font switching in CLD

Of course, with the right typescripts and \setupbodyfont, one can maintain stylistic consistency when switching fonts. But what if we want to scale independently of font switching? II. One approach might be to use symbols: \startTEXpage \definesymbol[Tee][\getglyph{times}{T}] \symbol[Tee]est \tfx \symbol[Tee]est \tfa \symbol[Tee]est \stopTEXpage In this example, \tfa does scale the symbol Tee. But \tfx does not scale the symbol! Why does \tfa (or higher such as \tfb etc.) work, but not \tfx (or lower)? III. The best approach would be to do it in CLD (Context Lua Code). That is mostly beyond my skill to write from scratch without a template, but there are some experiments in the system file font-imp-effects.lua. It is up to the user to decide to use {} (as before) or not but it is less error prone. It is now also possible to nest setups as in \starttext \startsetups one \startsetups [three] HERE \stopsetups \stopsetups \startsetups two \startsetups [three] THERE \stopsetups \stopsetups \setups[one] \setups[three] \setups[two] \setups[three] \stoptext As part of the ongoing improvements on math rendering we added some classic lm/cm kerns (between upperacse and periods / commas) in the goodie files. Some lowlevel manuals have been extended, explaining experimental 'named cross macro nesting parameter referencing' and 'constrained cq. retained assignments', but that is only relevant for those interested in overcoming some limitations in the traditional engines. How to override parts of a typescript

Say I want to use the Adobe Source font family in my document. They are installed on my system, but the file names are different to what’s in the typescript file provided with the ConTeXt distribution. The question is: can I move the \start/stoptypescript code into its own typescript file that would somehow refer to the official one and override only what’s needed? Or is the only solution to just copy the whole file and tweak what I need? I found some thread in the mailing list archive relating to this but it’s more than 15 years old. xml: matches always child of other element

Hi, I must be missing something obvious, but in this example the pattern for <term> always matches the first element, not the one under the current <index-entry>. Interestingly, using xml:index-entry-2 instead of the normal version matches correctly... Any hints what is going off the rails here? Map XML attributes to variables, dynamically

I'd like to dynamically define all the data- attributes to make key/value pairs accessible from the document. For example, I have this: \definestartstop[concurrent][ before={% \blank[big]% \setMPtext{1}{Berth 5}% \startTextConcurrentFrame}, after={\stopTextConcurrentFrame\blank[big]}, ] I'd like to replace \setMPText calls with a reference to a dynamically created variable reference. Tracker for hyphens at the end of lines

Hi colleagues, Is there a tracker for highlighting hyphens at the end of lines similar the way underfull and overfull boxes can be displayed with a coloured bar at the end of the offending line? I have looked at the wiki page "Reviewing hyphenation" and it has a solution for mkii from 2009 which, I would think, won't be suitable for present day ConTeXt. I have tried searching for hyphens using Skim and Adobe Acrobate viewers but although they find hyphenation in line they don't recognise hyphens at the edge of lines. Any help would be appreciated.
