command \text inside math environment not working anymore

Hi, during entering some formulas in a mkiv document I realized that the command \text is not working anymore. What is the new comḿand to embed text into a formula? I attached two minimal examples and the error message. footnotes by chapter

I would like to have my footnotes typeset by chapter, using the following input: \startbuffer This is some text\footnote{First footnote}. Followed by more and more text having a footnote\footnote{Second footnote}. Again some text. Again some text. Again some text. Again some text. \stopbuffer \setupfootnotes[location=text,way=bychapter] \starttext \chapter{Chapter One}\getbuffer\placefootnotes \chapter{Chapter Two}\getbuffer\placefootnotes \chapter{Chapter Three}\getbuffer\placefootnotes \stoptext Note the setup parameter "way=bychapter" but the numbering is not restarted with the chapter! Instead they go on and on. See the example output. How to restart the footnote numbering per chapter if that way= parameter doesn't do it? With the latest discussion about the || in mind, I notice that I cannot get it in iwona. \stupbodyfont[iwona] \starttext $\fenced[doublebar]{v}$ $\Vert v\Vert$ $||v||$ \stoptext Does it mean that the glyph is missing in the font? /Mikael

Glyph Variants with MKIV

Hi, How can I use glyph variants with ConTeXt/LuaTeX? Khaled posted an example with LuaLaTeX[1] and I would like to use that in a ConTeXt document. Can this be achieved with simplefonts or even directly? footnotes and columns

It appears that footnotes and columns are not friends of each other. Setting \setupfootnotes[location=columns] does not place the footnotes in the columns but still at the bottom of the page. Furthermore the \startcolumns..\stopcolumns sequence seems to have an adverse effect on the textheight, because the footnotes can be seen to sometimes intrude in the textarea (or vice versa of course). Changing the footnote setup to location = page, firstcolumn, lastcolumn, nothing different seen. Is this a known problem. I am refraining for the moment of a simple demo, because that is always difficult to achieve with this sort of placement problems. Hans van der Meer

MetaPost Function Grapher

The MetaPost output from my Function Grapher http://www.tlhiv.org/mpgraph/ is now available in ConTeXt format. This can be illustrated by choosing a graph type and selecting an example from one of the Example buttons. Once the graph is drawn, the ConTeXt source can be downloaded using the "Download" drop-down box. Simply executing `context mpgraph.tex` should produce the same graph viewed on the website in PDF. I just read in contextgarden.net the following: "Note that XeTeX uses mkii and LuaTeX uses mkiv ; in principle mkii is frozen so new features and improvements will only happen in mkiv." I use the ConTeXt which comes in TEXLIVE 2012, which I assume uses Mark IV. Does that mean that I can not use this version of ConTeXt with XeteX which also comes packaged in TEXLIVE? Regards

pgfplots in newest beta

Hi list, I've got a problem with the latest beta and pgfplots. It already happens when the module is loaded and also with a minimal file testing pgfplots. Output is attached below. Is this is a known problem that has a workaround or will be fixed in the future? Not a big problem for me, I guess I'll just downgrade to a working version in the meantime. simpleslides bug?

Maybe this is my fault. extras in \cite

Hello Everyone, A while back Aditya provided a patch for using *alternative=authornum* in *\cite*. The patch adds et al. for the cases with more than two authors. I have been using it without a hitch since then. However, today I tried to use *extras* option with this patch and it won't work. The MWE works for *alternative=apa* and *alternative=num* Please let me know if this can be rectified. Quick slide templates

Dear ConTeXt list, This could be more of a style and TeX question than a ConTeXt question. Nevertheles: I am making a presentation that involves some simple animations. The way I make those animations is by: 1. Stopping page numbering. 2. Flipping through the same slide repeated, but with img0, img1, img2 etc. 3. Start page numbering. The problem with my naïve approach of repeating slides is that fixing a spelling error or making changes implies that I have to do it several times for an “animated” slide, and is error-prone. Could you point me to a way by which I can make a slide something like a “function” whose argument is the image, and calling it creates that slide with an image? FWIW, I use texexec --xtx, but I am guessing a LuaTeX solution would be simpler. The XeTeX solution is what I am not able to find now. Thanks! Kumar -- Kumar Appaiah

I would like to convert my ConTeXt document to both PDF and "plain" HTML. I need plain HTML output (i.e., not XML or XHTML) because my institution's web based management software allows me to copy/paste plain HTML snippets but not XML or XHTML. Is it possible for ConTeXt to output HTML so that the result looks as close to the PDF output as possible? Troy Henderson

Spurious line when indenting with tabs using database module

Hi, I get an extra line when I use tabs for indentation, indenting with spaces works fine. bug in paragraph notes

Hi Hans, two months ago, I reported a bug with paragraph linenotes not properly separated from body. Vertical alignment in combinations?

Today I feel like a total ConTeXt dummy... The problem: I have 3*1 combination where the end graphics are the same size, but the middle graphic is much shorter. With a standard \startcombination\stopcombination I can easily get all three side-by-side, but they are bottom-aligned while I'd need them middle-aligned. I thought I once had a solution to this, but can't find it - and, for once, the garden doesn't seem to be able to help. Is there a setting I can use to fix the vertical alignment? Or should I give up with combinations and go for a natural table instead? Or do something totally else? Thanks, Mari

Dear ConTeXters, I've found a rsync binary on MinGW project page: http://sourceforge.net/projects/mingw/files/MSYS/Extension/rsync/rsync-3.0.… If there are any volunteers to test how the binary behaves when replacing the one from http://distribution.contextgarden.net/setup/context-setup-mswin.zip with the one from mingw, I will be grateful. The idea is to fetch context-setup-mswin.zip, delete cygiconv-2.dll, cygwin1.dll and rsync.exe, try to replace them with the binary from MinGW and test if everything still runs smoothly after that. If it does, I would prefer to use the binary from MinGW. Mojca

Find too long sentences

Good Friday there, working on a book with many too long sentences, I got the following idea/question: Is it possible to recognize the length of a sentence, and to let context show in the pdf, if there is a too long sentence. For example I am thinking of an command like \version[longsentence,15] which sets an symbol like "*" in the margin, if a sentence has more than 15 words. First, correct sentence-regonition could be a task: It is not enough to count the words between two dots, because of abbreviations. But there is probably a known algorithm for handling those problems. I think a feature like this could be interesting for context (and for my work :D) Thanks for you comments Huseyin

Search path for external figures changed

Is it intended that images are not searched in the texmf tree unless explicitly told to do so? Logical Page Numbers (PDF Bookmarks)

I know how to make the page numbers in the frontmatter to use Roman numerals, say, and in the bodymatter use Arabic numerals. I also know how to reset the page counter so that the numbering "starts over" after the frontmatter. However, I would like to have the page numbers appear in the PDF bookmarks appear as i, ii, iii, ... , 1, 2, 3, ... If there are 5 pages in the frontmatter, then all of my page numbers are off by 5 in the PDF bookmarks. How can this be fixed? Troy Henderson

I would like to process my <dvd> nodes in more than one way but I am stuck with the implementation. Dear all, I hope this doesn't get me banned from the ConTeXt list. What is the easiest/best way to add emoticons in ConTeXt as letters/symbols? In LaTeX, there is a package wasysym that gives \smiley and \frownie. It appears to be based at least partially on MetaFont code by Taco from 1998? I am aware that one can use images as characters as well, but I am looking for a cleaner solution. Incidentally (and irrelevant for my current purposes), my dream/nightmare would be to have animated emoticons in a PDF file. Is that at all possible? Thanks, Matthias

Big double quotes

Hello, I am trying to reproduce as closely as possible the large double quotes in the attached file. Though the actual glyph of the double quotes is not important for me (I have gone through the glyphs for CM without any success!), I would like to keep the double quotes large to attract attention to the quote. So I have essentially two problems: 1. Get a close enough glyph. I tried standard double quotes and also tried to use ′′ (U+02033) with context name *m: doubleprime*. But it doesn't produce anything. Please let me know if I am doing anything wrong. 2. Whatever may be the glyph, make is large. I have tried *\quotation* environment but it enlarges the text as well. I didn't see any option for enlarging *only* the quotation marks in *typo-del.mkiv*. So I tried to enlarge them myself. However, this leaves a large interlinespace before the last sentence. I would be grateful for any suggestions though outright solutions won't go remiss. Hello, This is a bit old now, but I would like to come back to it. First of all, Marco, thank you for your response. I did try it and it does work. However, I seem to be loosing other things like adjusting the table width; things that \placetable provides. \placetable also has the advantage that I don't have to wrap it around my tables, it just appears at the beginning, not the end. A couple of points: - I tried to find some documentation about \startplacetable… \stopplacetable to see how I could enforce the width and generally to see what options there were. I could not find any, not even in the source code. How is this pair defined? - I also tried to find out the overall problem with \placetable. According to this page here: http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Floating_Objects the split option should work, but for TABLEs only. So, I think this does not work for me because I am using TABULATE, right? The split function in \setuptabulate works as well, but only if the table is not inserted using \placetable, that is as a float. So, \placetable knows how to split a TABLE but not a TABULATE although \starttabulate… \stoptabulate knows how to split itself. Is that right? But if it is not inserted as a float, I do not get a caption and I cannot refer to my table later on, right? There seem to be different ways of doing this, all of which miss out on some fine detail I need them to do. So, after all that rumbling, I guess, I am asking... …is there another way of: - placing a TABULATE table such that it has a caption that I can refer to; - split the TABULATE table across multiple pages; - and control the width of the TABULATE table. Typesetting LibreOffice (ODT) documents with ConTeXt

I scoured the wiki and mailing-list without finding a definite answer. The most recent discussion I can find is from 2006 and at that time it was "possible" but nobody had yet developed the appropriate template, XSLT style-sheet, module or whatever to actually do it. For a number of reasons (including an absolute necessity to produce MS compatible .doc files) I need to maintain and write documents using LibreOffice Writer (or OO.org Writer) but the quality of the PDF files is, shall we say, not satisfactory. Exporting to LaTeX 2e is possible (and standard equipment in LO-W) but after using both for a while now, I vastly prefer ConTeXt. I could probably use something like the TEI tools to transform the ODT file to XHTML or TEI p5 and process that but I've found over many years such intermediate transformations have a lot of problems of their own. I don't need math support for /my/ work but I am sure others who do need it would like to follow the same route to great PDFs. Any solutions? -- Bill Meahan Westland, Michigan USA

Hi all, when I issue a \startplacefigure, it breaks the flow of the paragraph. Normally, it is not a problem (I can use 2*hang anyway), but I have a one-paragraph enumeration (made by \defineenumeration), and if I give the figure at its beginning, the "label" is on a line by its own; the problem is, I want the enumeration typeset by a block, and that's why I don't want to give the figure *before* the block. mkiv in endless loop

Hello, I have been using context rather extensively until 2008 and then moved to another job where I did not use anything tex related. After those nearly 5 years, I decided to pick up context again. I wanted to try mkiv because the possibility of using openfonts looked interesting, so I made a tex file based on one that worked years ago, changed the font definitions to the texgyre fonts and gave it a try. The font defs seem to be ok (at least there are no error msges related to fonts) but after context gets through my tex file, it enters an endless loop which I have to interrupt. I checked the file over and over and cannot find any error. I tested a short "hello world" tex file, and that one worked fine. any clues on what could be going on here ? fontloader.open() fails on Heiti from acroread fonts

Hi all, I’m not sure this is a Luatex or Context bug so please feel free to forward this to the appropriate ML if necessary. With the latest standalone (Luatex beta-0.74.0-2012122510, Context 2013.02.05 22:32) the font db builder fails at Adobe Heiti as distributed with acroread: [14:33:17=>phg@phlegethon=> ~/tmp/ctx/fontdb] mtxrun --script fonts --reload <... /> fonts | names | adding path from OSFONTDIR: /home/phg/.fonts fonts | names | globbing path /usr/share/fonts/**.otftexlua: ../../../source/texk/kpathsea/cnf.c:255: kpathsea_cnf_get: Assertion `kpse->program_name' failed. Aborted (core dumped) (Full log attached.) All fonts, even Adobe stuff, up until Heiti are processed without complaint. I traced the issue to a call to fontloader.open() in font-syn.lua, line 221. To reproduce it, run this code through texlua: #!/usr/bin/env texlua ff = fontloader.open[[/usr/share/fonts/adobe/AdobeHebrew_Regular.otf]] --> works print(ff) --> userdata ff = fontloader.open[[/usr/share/fonts/adobe/AdobeHeitiStd_Regular.otf]] --> fails print(ff) The problem disappears if I initialize kpathsea first: kpse.set_program_name"texlua" ... Chapter headings macro

Hello everyone, I have defined a macro for the chapter layouts -- nothing fancy, but still it is giving me trouble. Essentially, I call this macro using *command=* in *\setuphead*. My philosophy was to add all the details in the macro, so that I don't have to call anyother keyvalue pairs in *\setuphead*. However, the macro gives two different results when called for typesetting a chapter heading by ConTeXt internals and explicitly by me in the document (see attached file). I don't know why the chapter number font style is not obeyed. If I add *numberstyle=dfont* in *\setuphead*, then the font size is increased but the frame size has spurious space at top and bottom. When I call the macro myself, there is a single whitespace before the chapter heading (as can be seen in the attached file). I have gone through the wiki as much as possible and I think that I could have easily copied *much better* heading styles from it. But I do not want to use code that I don't fully understand. Any suggestions/help will be most appreciated. I need margin notes in a doublesided page environment in MKIV. The following: \setuppagenumbering[alternative=doublesided] \setupinmargin[location=both] \starttext \inmargin{n1}\input knuth\inmargin{note 1} \page \inmargin{n2}\input knuth\inmargin{note 2} \page \inmargin{n3}\input knuth\inmargin{note 4} \stoptext works in MKII. In MKIV, however, all the margin notes are on the left. So how can I get this right in MKIV? Alan

Ok, not everything works fine, now everything is bold. So ConTeXt cant recognize the different versions (normal, bold, italic) from adobe garamond pro correctly. But I use them without simplefonts, then it works. Why it is so hard for hard to recognize them correctly, I saw that for other fonts, too. Whereelse other programs do not have these problems. I would be thankful for hints, because I would like it very much to use Adobe Garamond with ConTeXt, like it is very easy to use it in WinWord, or Corel Draw, or many other programs I use. How to scale fonts?

Hello, I want to use truly huge (40pt) fonts for chapter numbers. In my latex code, I used \newfont{\chapterNumber}{pplr9d scaled 7000} From the context manual, I thought that \definebodyfont [11pt] [rm] [ tfH=cmr12 scaled 7000] should do it. Fixed Line Height

When a page begins to get "full", TeX automatically squeezes lines slightly closer together (vertically) to help the page "break" where it thinks that it should. If the page is less than full, then the (vertical) distance between lines is fixed. How can I make this fixed distance remain fixed even as the page starts approaching full? That is, I don't want the lines to squeeze together when the page gets full. I'm familiar with \clubpenalty \interlinepenalty \displaywidowpenalty \widowpenalty \keeplinestogether (ConTeXt) but I'm not sure how to use any/all of these to get this effect. Troy Henderson

No number of chapter in TOC

Hi there, after each chapter I begin with a section. So in the table of content every chapter has the same page-number as the section, which comes directly after the chapter-title (so no text is between them). In the TOC it is not necessary to have Chapter 1 ........... 7 Section 1 .............7 .... Chapter 1 ............. 22 Section 1 .............. 22 And so on. Rotating \copypages

I have a PORTRAIT letter size PDF that I would like to include in my LANDSCAPE letter size document. I am doing \setuppapersize[letter,landscape] \starttext \copypage[foo.pdf] \stoptext but foo.pdf is being inserted "as-is" and thus is being clipped since the height of a letter size page is 8.5in and the height of foo.pdf is 11in. I would like to use \copypages to insert foo.pdf rotated 90 degrees. How can this be done? Troy Henderson

Hi there, for images I use: \startplacefigure [title=desciption, reference=fig:demo, number=no] \externalfigure[example][width=13cm] \stopplacefigure But how to reference to the image, if it is in another folger. Say my context mainfile is in ...\projekt and the images are in \projekt\images, then how to reference correctly directly to the images in the subfolder "images"? Thanks Huseyin

local picture not found anymore

Having a file picture.jpg worked fine. Now it results in inclusion of "The picture package by Heiko Oberdiek". Suddenly file searching doesn't start with the current directory anymore but somewhere in the /tex-chain. Were the significant changes here? Something to do with Luatex? deferred variable lookup in environment?

Hi, sorry if the subject is misleading, I'm not sure how to say it in few words. I'm trying to have the date in a layer in an environment. In the text using the environment, I want to be able to set the date. If the date is not set, the current date should be used, otherwise the set date. This is what I've tried, but it is always the currentdate, that is displayes. Hello ConTeXist. I would like use modes alternative to change of image dimensions in different documents (presentation or print version). Compilation in ConTeXt TeXLive 2012 version will compile without error, but without visual effect. Compilation with the standalone version fails. What is problem or eventually. how to solve my problem another way. Indentation in TOC

Hello, I am trying to indent my section/subsection etc. progressively. I am using *numbercommand* and added *hspace* before the numbers. But the section title is not moved to the right along with the section number and overlaps with it. I tried adding *loffset=2cm* (since all the options of *\framed* are valid for *setuplist*) also, but doesn't seem to have any effect. Please point out the mistake. Using num and authornum bibliography style simultaneously

Hi, I want to use *num* and *authornum* bibliiography style simultaneously in my document. \setuppublications[alternative=num] ------------------------------------------- [1]. \setuppublications[alternative=num, refcommand=authornum] -- Author name [1]. So I have defined a macro as: \define[1]\citet{% \setuppublications[alternative=num, refcommand=authornum] \cite[#1] \setuppublications[alternative=num] } to give me the *authornum* format and default \cite behaviour is *num*. This works. However, I have a feeling that this is not the recommended way of doing things in ConTeXt. Do let me know. Regards, Devendra

Bug in \externalfigure[...][factor=max]

\externalfigure[...][factor=max] behaves incorrectly (or at lease does not behave as expected) when the width of the figure is less than the height. Looking at the grph-inc.mkiv (in particular \grph_scale_apply_size), I no longer understand what factor=max is supposed to do! facor=fit seems to behave as expected, although I don't understand the purpose of factor=broad (why subtract 4*bodyfont? How do I disable \externalfigure to search in texmf-directory? Using \setupexternalfigures [location=local] \starttext \externalfigure[cow] \stoptext still includes the figure. The tracker shows: graphics > inclusion > locations: local graphics > inclusion > path list: . .. ../.. graphics > inclusion > strategy: unknown format, prefer quality graphics > inclusion > found: ./cow.pdf -> /opt/context-minimals/texmf-context/tex/context/sample/cow.pdf Also, if location={local,global}, which directories of TEXMF tree are searched? No interaction for publications with author-year style

Hi all, I cannot get interactive publication references with author-year styles, i.e. all apa and ssa alternatives. See below: \setupbibtex[database={sample}] \setuppublications[alternative=apa] \setupinteraction[state=start,color=blue] \setupcombinedlist[publications][interaction=all] \starttext Here I reference Ref1 \cite[ref1] and Ref2 \cite[ref2]. \page[yes] \placepublications[criterium=all] \stoptext It works, however, with \setuppublications[alternative=ams] or with the num alternatives. In short, author-year styles do not work, but number styles do. Any clues as to what might help? I attached the bib file. Thanks in advance. Best, Martin

Processing MP graphics without interference

Hi, I have MetaPost graphics that are generated by an external program. Each graphic is an individual file and the code is enclosed by beginfig(1) … endfig; end The beginfig argument is always “1”, it does not increment. Including the graphics using MPrun fails, since the first figure's “end” stops the MetaPost run: \startMPrun{foo} beginfig(1); fill fullcircle scaled 1cm withcolor blue; endfig; end; %% prevents the second graph from being processed \stopMPrun \startMPrun{bar} beginfig(1); fill unitsquare scaled 2cm withcolor red; endfig; end; \stopMPrun \starttext foo: \externalfigure[mprun:foo.1] bar: \externalfigure[mprun:bar.1] %% not shown \stoptext I want to avoid preprocessing the generated MP graphics, if possible (stripping the “end”s). To get a feel for it, I am setting up a letter style for my self, and some problems are showing up now. So here it goes ... What I want to accomplish: The user writes the address, and he should not have to use \crlf or have to use several distinct commands. See the attached pdf files for the output of different versions of context (test.pdf is compiled with the latest beta). I think the look in test20121210.pdf is the right one. /Mikael
