Hi, One these days there will be a first iteration of this years 'current' release. This has to do with the texlive code freeze. As usual the current is paired with a version of luatex and mplib, of which there also will be a frozen version soon. This year we also have luajittex. Among the biggest differences between this and the previous current are: - More low level tex code has been made mkiv compliant. This had a side effect of introducing bugs. As expected more flexibility an potential for extensions has not resulted in slower runs. - Some mechanisms have been rewritten, some even from scratch (a new table mechanism, multi columns). We tried to remain compatible but where possible inconsistencies have been removed. - Of course bugs have been removed also thanks to Wolfgang and others. Like before users have been very patient and willing to test. The updated wiki and good examples that show up on sites are an indication that mkiv has mostly replaced mkii. - There is some new math magic under the hood. We switched to tex gyre and latin modern open math as defaults. - Lua code has been optimized: leaner, meaner, less dependent, version 5.2 etc. There is more helper code available pending future extensions to mkiv. Basic code can be used in stock Lua. - The 2013 current performs significantly faster than previous versions and (certainly) on complex jobs mkiv outperforms mkii. Lots of time went into identifying and removing bottlenecks. - When luajittex is used, thanks to the faster virtual machine, mkiv benefits a lot: 20-490% faster runs are possible. I usually test with manuals I'm working on, but a nice base test is \dorecurse {1000} {test\page} which now runs 20% faster with stock luatex and 50% faster with luajittex. - The font database generator is made more efficient and unless you do a full reload take hardly any time to regenerate after an update. This means that updating betas is more convenient. In general all logging to the terminal and log file is faster due to several optimizations. - Some mtx scripts have been extended, some more will show up. - We ship a set of advanced scite lexers (tex, lua, cld, mp, w, xml, etc. plus a context setup) that can serve as benchmark for syntax highlighting context code. To some extent this also determines the way mkiv is coded. I probably forgot a lot. After the current is done, we can start thinking of what to do next. Here are some thoughts: - Improving the output routines. This is non-trivial. Maybe I'll rewrite the columnsets code. The mixed column figure placement can be improved too. - Some mechanism will get support for setups alongside commands, like sections and list related mechanisms already has. - Parts of the xml handling can be cleaned up, although the current code performs rather well already. - Support for sql might get more integrated into the core (a side effect of projects I'm working on). - I might pickup the metatex thread: a generic base with special purpose subsets of code. It might not be worth the trouble, but it's good to have a proper dependency tree. - I will continue making some of the Lua code more generic (maybe by introducing some additional namespaces). - I need to cleanup all the s-* files: namespaces, mkii->mkiv, etc. A tedious job. Clean up all mkiv presentation styles. (Something for rainy days or cold winter nights with stacks of new cd's to make that effort bearable.) - Play with a partial css simulator (relates to export), but only when I'm really bored or need it (getting css itself right is already enough of a challenge). - Pick up on ideas with respect to math dictionaries. Add some support for breaking large math formulas. Kick out more old code. - Play with alternative par builders, i.e. finally add the mkiv Lua parbuilder that I have around for years into the distribution. This relates to a drastic cleanup of expansion code in the luatex front- and backend. - Include some third party modules into the core distribution. - Remove bottlenecks in mkiv where possible (user input is needed for this). Then there are the documents: - Update the xml descriptions (Wolfgang has been working on this, and there is the wiki). - Finish the 'cld' manual (mostly done). - Update the 'xml' mkiv manual (doable, maybe users have examples too). - Finish the updated 'mathml' manual (done but needs checking but then I might overhaul the whole lot again). - Finish the more technical 'mkiv font' manual (tedious job but okay). - Pickup the 'stylistics' manual (also nice to do but a bit tedious). - Turn 'hybrid' into a more finished document (the second part of the history of mkiv/luatex). - Add more to the 'about' series (the third part). Of course this is too ambitious but it's good to remind myself that some work needs to be done. And ... users might have ideas of what needs to be done as well. Nabla operator appears italic in formula

Hello, It can be quite common to typeset long quotations in a smaller typeface. The following minimal example is somewhat problematic: ------------------------------------------------------ \setupquotation [style=\tfx\setupinterlinespace] \starttext \startquotation \input tufte \input tufte \input tufte \stopquotation \stoptext ------------------------------------------------------ The interline spacing is wrong for the last paragraph. Adding a \par in the input before \stopquotation puts the right quotation closing mark on a newline. I suppose that the common practice is *not* to use explicit quotation marks when typesetting such long quotations in smaller typeface. In this case, setting left=,right= and explicitly putting a \par would work. However, if one wants to have quotation marks, this is no good. And placing an explicit \par is not very elegant, either. Nor does it seem that \switchtobodyfont[] does any better. Maybe the solution is simple but I have not found it... Alan

Hello, quotation is linked to quote. Indeed, we have in typo-del.mkiv \definedelimitedtext [\v!quote][\v!quotation] However, when the user then changes options using \setupquotation, \startquote\stopquote also gets modified. In the minimal example below, it is necessary to uncomment \setupquote in order to restore normal quote text. different page background for chapter title page

Hi all, I'm sure there must be a solution for this, but I haven't been able to find it yet: I want my chapter titles typeset in a sort of frame which will span the entire page, not only the text area, so I guess the easiest way to do that would be a page background. How can I set up a background that will appear only on the title page, in addition to the regular background? Bonus question: I also want the color schemes of both backgrounds to be different in every chapter, so the solution should make this possible. The example is a bit silly, but it shows what I'm looking for, I hope. widowpenalty

Is the \widowpenalty for avoiding short single lines at the top of the page functional in ConTeXt? Or is there another setup to be done? I find a situation where \widowpenalty=10000 doesn't make a difference. But it is not easily decided if the TeX-engine could have done nothing in this special case or if the parameter is not functional. Hans van der Meer

Bug in \column

Hi, I found a possibly bug (I attached the doc). With bigskip twocolumns work but with \column it does not. That is, with the diff: 98c98 < \bigskip --- > %\bigskip 100c100 < %\column --- > \column it does not work: the last exercise is shown in the first column. Can anyone explain me what happens? Mixed columns

Hi, after the problem with the \column command with the normal columns environment I tried if the original problem can be solved with mixed columns. While the \column command works there a unwanted space appeared at the begin of the second column. "Missing number, treated as zero" error when using \definefont with \define'd dimension

Hello, I reported a Missing Number error back in December (thread at http://www.ntg.nl/pipermail/ntg-context/2012/070471.html) but got sidetracked on another issue before finding a resolution. Now I'm back to the Missing Number error, and I have a short example that reproduces it: \define\largefontsize{13pt} % Works fine: \definefont[SerifL][Arial at 13pt] % Leads to error: \definefont[SerifL][Arial at \largefontsize] % "Missing number, treated as zero" error thrown on the following line: \starttext \SerifL{Hello} \stoptext Note that the SerifL font definition works fine (no error) if I hard-code in "13pt" instead of using an intervening \largefontsize definition. But if I hard-code the point size, it would hamper the modularity of our font configuration and the use of modes in which different size fonts are used. Maybe \define is just the wrong command to use when creating an identifier for a specified dimension? I tried changing it to \def and the error went away! I looked up the documentation of \define (http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Command/define) and \def, and couldn't find any obvious difference, except that \def is TeX and \define is ConTeXt. The wiki page I just linked to mentions differences between MkII and MkIV, but this error occurs in both (in XeTeX and LuaTeX). Can someone help me understand why I should not use \define for this case? (Or in general, when I should not use \define?) Or does the problem lie somewhere else? Thanks, Lars

man pages for ConTeXt: looking for volunteers

Dear users, In preparation of this year's TeX Live release, it would be nice to also revise man pages a bit. Hans just implemented auto-conversion of help into man pages for the lua scripts. So the options are described as they should be, but if there are any volunteers to help polishing out and provide either more extensive descriptions, examples, ... or overall improvements, you are invited to leave some feedback or provide some help (additional text/descriptions or syntax corrections). Dear Knights, What is the canonical way to break a ligature in MkIV? The canonical TeX way, e.g. f{}i does not work if the feature liga=yes. The zero-width joiner or non-joiner will do it but that seems ad hoc or abusive ;-) since those are really for cursive scripts like Arabic and Syriac. Hi all, I'm using the emacs package etexshow to provide a quick ConTeXt command reference in EMACS. This utility parses the interface file cont-en.xml (for english, in my case) and uses the contents to provide a basic dictionary of available commands. In the documentation for etexshow, there is a reference to being able to generate a complete interface description (the aforementioned xml file) like so: ";; There is still an xml-file shipped with this code. Usually you would ;; generate the xml-file with 'texexec'ing the file setupe.tex. Then you ;; will get the cont-en.xml file that can (could) be used as an input for ;; this etexshow. But for now, this won't work. It will work rsn." It is not clear whether that file (setupe.tex or setup.tex) is/was supposed to be shipped with etexshow or was supposed to be a part of context. I've searched and found a few references to this problem, but never a definitive answer, so if anyone knows the answer to these questions I would love to know!! 1. Is the referenced setup(e).tex a file that was previously shipped with ConTeXt - presumably mkii since the author refers to texexec - or would this be something the author would have included with etexshow itself? 2. Is the interface file, e.g. cont-en.xml, auto-generated from all of the defined macros in ConTeXt, or is that file hand-written as metadata to accompany the source-code definitions? 3. Since self-documentation is a goal of the project, is it possible to generate something akin to the interface file that presents a snapshot of all commands known to context at a given time, for use in things like etexshow or other tools? If so, is it possible to do this with modules loaded to see what they additionally define? Thanks in advance for any help! I'm hoping to use any information I get to update etexshow, if possible, and maybe update the ConTeXt support in AUCTEX as well. As can be seen in the following example, within an itemized list the framedtext sticks out to the right, instead of having its right edge aligned with the outer ones. Is there a simple remedy or is it an unwanted effect? I would like the right edges line up perfectly. Dear all, Considering all complaints about the difficulties to find, in the Garden, or in the NTG mail archive, answers to specific problems, wouldn't it be a good idea to ask everybody to clearly state the subject of their message, preferably starting with the most important keyword, and in particular to avoid (no subject) or [***SPAM***], and similar things as subjects. Also, if you forgive me, subjects like "upto current" or "Bug in \column" are not really helpful when on tries to search in the archive for a solution to a specific problem. In the last-mentioned example, wouldn't "\column, Bug in - " or even "\column, Bug in \column" be better? More specific subject titles in the mails might save some of us hours of unfruitful searching and lots of teeth grinding. LuaTeX error [string "\directlua "]:1: invalid escape sequence near '\d'. Second approach, use \edef to get an expanded value. \edef\thedate{\date}\writestatus{***}{\meaning\thedate} *** > macro:->\date Alas, the date is still the unexpanded macro and not something like 20 march 2013. Endnotes - How to place all endnotes in a separate chapter?

Dear list, How can I collect, in a separate (unnumbered) chapter at the end, or in the Backmatter, of a book, all endnotes from the previous chapters, as lists per chapter (for example in sections in this chapter "Notes", with, preferably, the chaptertitles as sectiontitles of that chapter) My setupfile contains, on the subject of notation, only: \setupnotation[endnote][way=bychapter,bodyfont=10pt] and each chapter now ends with: \placenotes[endnote][height=\textheight] which neatly gives a list at the end of each chapter. While reading the ConTeXt Manual I tried the following two commands, which didn't work. Here is the sample souce. \starttext First line. %\hskip With text here, this causes an compile time error. \hskip3em Indented?\crlf \hskip 3em Indented?\crlf \hskip3cm Indented?\crlf %\sym{on} This causes an error. %\sym{$\diamond$} This causes an error. %\sym{$\diamondsuit$} This causes an error. Last line. \stoptext What happened to \hskip and \sym ? Or what am I doing wrong? One further question. I tried nopping \before, \after, \between, and the none, and joinedup option but could not suppress white space occurring after \startitemize and the 1st \item. I tried looking in the garden as well, but had no luck. I believe th e information is in there but I couldn't find it after a hour or so. So please inform me as to how can tell ConTeXt how much space, including none, to place between the an item header (or none) and the list??? I'd appreciate the assistance in learning who to do this.

To update or not to update - that is the question...

Hi all, I have an issue with \overrightarrow being positioned under its argument. I've read on the list that this is now fixed, but... I can't upgrade! This is because I'm preparing a document in an "incremental" way, that is, I'm preparing course materials (problem sets) for the next class each week and giving them away to students. If I upgrade, the pagebreaks change (probably due to some tweaking Hans added to multicolumn itemgroups a few months ago). So what would you suggest? I can see at least three solutions, none of which is ideal for me. 1. Manually backport the fix to my ConTeXt. Pro: ideal solution (at least for now). Con: no idea how to do it - I don't know how to access ConTeXt repository (if it's at all possible for a non-developer). 2. Upgrade and insert some manual pagebreaks so that pages 21-22 (which I'm currently working on) contain the same problems as they used to. Pro: easy fix. Con: very dirty trick, and what if someone asks me about some old problems, because he lost his copy? 3. Just use \vec instead of \overrightarrow. Pro: very easy, no dirty hacks. Con: ugly looking (see: \vec{AB}). Any ideas? Is it possible to find the official ConTeXt repo somewhere, or if not, maybe someone could send me the diff of the commit which fixed that (this post: http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.tex.context/79011 suggests that it is the 2012.10.30 21:13 commit)? I'm getting "mtxrun | unknown script 'context.lua' or 'mtx-context.lua'" on the three line \starttext This is the text section. \stoptext This is the TeXLive distributed version and it worked yesterday. I'm pretty sure I messup up the paths or tex path database used by kpathse, etc. Is there a program I can run to go through a texlive installation and rebuild the TDS database? Thanks

TeX macro to MP variable

Hi, I am looking for a way to assign the value of a TeX macro to an MP variable. However, this only works the first time, then the value is not updated any longer. Hi, After some experimenting, I settled on the next interface for dynamic features: The is also a generic command \type {\feature} that takes two arguments. This mechanism replaces \addff cum suis, although for a while they will stay around (mapped onto add and subtract). Idris is testing it (as he used this kind of trickery extensively for complex arabic) and he make a nice wiki page. We can think of a predefined set of simple features. I am stuck with the following problem. Inside an \halign (table) I can insert a colored rule with: \noalign{\color[red]{\hrule height#1 depth\zeropoint}} Now I want something more involved like: \color[red]{\hrule height#1 width2mm}% fixed length colored block \color[black]{\hrule height#1}% filling the width left \color[red]{\hrule height#1 width2mm}% fixed length colored block producing [red][black black black …][red] However, this doesn't work. There are also features that one only wants to enable in small text snippets. For this we have \addff etc but these don't accumulate. Maybe I have not made it clear, what I mean? My Minexample is: \setuplist[chapter][pagenumber=no] \starttext \completecontent \chapter{Chapter 1} \section{Section 1} \chapter{Chapter 2} \stoptext Now Chapter 1 is without pagenumber in the TOC, correct, because it has a section after the chapter-title! reStructuredText module

Am I correct in thinking the rst module does not process the "class" and "container" directives? I looked through the Lua source and didn't see anyplace where these directives are processed although I will be the first to admit I don't know much about Lua. I retired from software development before Lua became popular and never bothered to learn it. Assembler, FORTRAN, C, SQL, PL/SQL, Perl.... I know or knew, Lua I do not. :) I use these directives heavily and pandoc ignores them so I'm beginning to think I have a problem generating EPUB + ConTeXt + HTML(5) versions of the same document from common rst source. Dear gang, Here is the situation: For an upcoming book project I may use a set of proprietary fonts whose license that does not allow modification even for personal, private use. Some characters I need are absent, but the components I need are there (macrons, dots, etc). So I can conceivably use \defineactivecharacter to map each needed unicode char to a \def made of glyph components in the font. Now in a typescript we have different fonts: Each individual font needs its own setup in terms of \defineactivecharacter. So the final typeface will be able to associate each individual font with its associated setup. Hello there, normally I use \setuplist[chapter][pagenumber=no] to prevent pages for chapters in the TOC, because normally (!) after every chapter-titel comes a section-title, directly, without text between the two titles. And so it is in this case enough to give the page-number for the section-titles only. But now I have an book with one single chapter, which do not have sections. So with \setuplist[chapter][pagenumber=no] it has no page-number in the TOC. I want to have the page-number for this single chapter-title only, but for the other chapter-titles (which have section-titles after them) I want still the above setting. How to do that? Thank you! Reusing MP graphics

Hi, I'm trying to use "width=local" in an enumartion, but the width is the same for hsize, broad and local. Separation of delimited text symbol

Hi, this issue was raised on stackexchange¹. When setting up a delimited text, a line break is allowed between the character and the following text, which is always undesired (maybe I lack imagination where this might be intended). I am just learning ConTeXt, so please bare with me. In all of the documentation that I've read so far, it shows the names of imported photographs, graphs, blocks, etc as a simple filename without any filename extensions or pathnames. Having a bunch of photographs anc charts files in the same directory as te tex files reallys clutters things up. I'd like to store photographs, etc., to use used in a subdirectory of the project. Also might be nice to have subdirectories for the sourc e of each part of a book. How do experienced people handle organizing files for large-ish scale projects such as a book? It would be educational to learn how this is handled. Thanks

\usemodule not working in latest beta

Forgive me if this has been answered else where, I couldn't seem to spot it. I have my own little version of t-title.tex that worked with the beta before luatex 0.75. Upon updating to the latest beta last night, the document wouldn't compile. It looked like it wasn't reading up the \usemodule[title] at all, because it was giving me an undefined control sequence error on the first macro defined in t-title.tex (\doctitle{my title}). Dear all, With recent standalones (jan. 7, jan. 29 and march 2) I am experiencing trouble processing .tex-files that gave no problems in november (14-11). For instance, when processing with "ConTeXt ver: 2013.01.02 18:19 MKIV fmt: 2013.1.7 int: english/english", the log file gives the following information: ------------------------------------------------------------------- ! Hello, which XML processing Lua engine is used by ConTeXt? There are more XML processors developed for Lua - LuaXML, LuaExpat etc. Does ConTeXt use one of these or another, or its own - a built-in one? processing xml with lua

Hi all, one of my favorite topics… Here is a minimal example which shows something that I don't understand: when I process the subsection with the lua code, I want to get the value of the current section's "label" attribute in xml.attribute(r, "../../section", "label", "X"). So i was expecting that lua would go up (../../) and fetch the current section's label. But if you run the example, you see that it actually always gets the first section's label (value is always 1). How can I get the current section's label with a lua function? Understanding \lesshyphens

Hi, how is \lesshyphens supposed to work? According to the source it's supposed to increment the current value of lefthyphenmin and righthyphenmin. But apparently I'm mistaken, it has no effect whatsoever. Dear list, with the (almost minimal) example below, I hoped that the frame would be recalculated at every page. But it is not (they all look the same in my output pdf). How can I force the frame to be redrawn at every page? Btw, If I change the uniqueMPgraphic to useMPgraphic (everywhere) my file does not compile anymore. A trouble with setupbodyfontenvironment

So I've come back to using ConTeXt after a year away from it (publishers preferring LaTeX, y'know), and in revising some student notes I'm getting errors which seem new. For a collection of overheads, I've set up \setupbodyfontenvironment[default][em={\slanted\color[red]}] However, when I run context on my files, a command such as {\em elephant} produces: l.3 The {\em elephant} is a large gray animal ? h The control sequence marked <to be read again> should not appear between \csname and \endcsname. vertical position in itemize and math

Hi, I have two problems with vertical position, one in itemize and one in math. This is pushed down (because of the formula it seems). What if I want the a) aligned with the 1.? (I wrote about this problem some time ago, and it got solved, but that time no math was included) The second one is the "division line" in \frac{NN^T}{N^TN} that look pushed down to me. I'm not sure how it should be, but my guess is aligned with the minus sign or so. All this with the latest ConTeXt suite. /Mikael

Please can someone explain why the column before the floating figure is empty? I thought that the figure would float through the text to the first location with sufficient space. That appears not te be the case: the input behind the figure does not typeset before it although there is ample space for the text that now follows the picture. Arranging framed text without gaps

Dear all, I am trying to create a table where the entries have determined width and height. They typically are something like \framed[width=5cm,height=4cm,align={center,middle}{Text} and I understand that I will be responsible for making the dimensions so that everything fits nicely. What has happened to the joinedup parameter of \startitemize? As can be seen in the following minimal example, the \setupwhitespace effectively kills the effect of the joinedup. Making it impossible to typeset preceding text and item list close together. I can barely believe that this side effect of \setupwhitespace is inentional. float placement

I would like to place a figure (float) on a page by itself, at a specific point. Using \placefigure[force] gives me the figures at that point but not on separate page, whereas \placefigure[page] puts it on a page but not at the point where it should appear. I find the distance between my footnotes too large: 1 first foornote <too much space> 2 second footnote Trying \setupfootnotes[after={\blank-2mm]}] does not change anything as is the case with \setupnotation[footnote][after={\blank[-2mm]}] A strange phenomenon I noticed when wxperimenting for this post: \setupnotes[bodyfont=12pt] does change the font in the footnotes, but \setupnotation[footnote][bodyfont=12pt] does not. I thought that in mkiv \setupnotation[footnote] should completely replace \setupnotes. How is that? Hans van der Meer

Hi, I just want to know if there is a equal thing like python.sty [1], sympytex [2] or sagetex [3] for embed python, sympy and sage into ConTeXt documents as there exist for latex. Yeah, I know I could write a script and run python externally to ConTeXt but this were easier to use. Thanks in advance, Xan. problem with --arrange option (current 2011.05.18 18:04 MKIV and actual beta)

Hi, I would print a booklet with trap of 3mm. With the current version 2011.05.18 18:04 MKIV – luatex 0.70, all's right. But with the current version 2012.05.30 11:26 MKIV – luatex 0.72 and the actuel beta – luatex 0.74, the header logo is cut into the cut marks (w/o trap). You can see my minimal in attachment. makeupwidth in columns

The contextrefmanual tells me in table 3.2 the following on the behaviour of the variables denoting the width of texts: [cid:D468CE47-C987-414C-84B0-47652AC59361@fritz.box] But the claim that \textwidth gives the width of a column is false. See the following minimal example, the first picture is set with 0.45\makeupwidth, the second with 0.9\textwidth. It is clear that \textwidth does not follow the claim. Previously I could use \chapter[reference-to-this-chapter]{title} Now the preferred way seems to be \startchapter[title=the-title], but how do I program now the reference to this chapter? The Wiki does not contains a page for \startchapter and the section on command only gives info and examples on the \chapter macro. Hans van der Meer

Hi, I thought I could use zapfino as a calligraphicfont as it is indeed a calligraphic typeface. The following example (modified from bitbucket.org/wolfs/simplefonts/src/tip/files/simplefonts-34.tex) however gives me an error: \usemodule[simplefonts] \setcalligraphicfont[zapfinoextraltpro] \starttext \cg\input knuth \stoptext --- fonts > typescripts > unknown: library 'calligraphicfont:2' --- Adam

footnotes what happened?

What has happened to \setupfootnotes? \setupfootnotes defines [textcolor=] although in the wiki just below this the example has [color=] instead. But neither of these do color the footnote text. As the reset of the footnote numbering by chapter with way=bychapter doesn't work either, though advertised in the wiki, I really fear there is something amiss here. I am the one who is mistaken or are some reparations needed? Hans van der Meer
