Figures and Lua (continuing "Number of pages by Lua of a figure to be inserted?" somehow)

Hello, I tried to make a "more minimal" example. ("3rd call") \stopluacode \externalfigure[Kn.pdf][scale=625] % Found - OK \stoptext ---- The 3rd call of 'test()' seems to not locate 'Kn.pdf' although the path was altered by preceding \setupexternalfigures. How to modify the 'test()' to work properly even in the 3rd case? NB: Sorry for repeating the topic "in another coat" - it may not be so interesting for listeners of this mailing list. But the goal is to add figures and PDF files into the document automatically. One of the tasks is to detect number of pages of the figure. The code above is a core cut out; it should work (or: if this part wouldn't work, neither would the rest) even in the 3rd case. Any help to make the piece of code work would be appreciated. Deactivating gridsetting for TOC

Hi there, thanks for the many helps today, again! Because I use different font sizes for the titles in the TOC (depending on the title-level), I have problems with grid-setting. It makes sometimes blank lines between two titles in the toc. I understand that behaviour, it is because of the different sizes. Instead of involved testings with different sizes and vertical spaces, can I simply switch off the grid-setting for the toc? That would be the easiest. I tried \placeongrid{\completecontent}, and that works, no more blank lines. But now the complete toc is set on one page only, but the toc is much to big for only one page, so it is set beyong the page buttom, and disappears in the pdf-nirvana :D Is there a feature/option "grid" for toc in \completecontent or anything like that? Joinedup itemization with margin

Hi there, I want a joined itemization (I just want no empty lines between two items, is this what "joinedup" means?) with a margin on the left side, so that the complete itemization is indented. My try is this: ++++++++++++++++++ \starttext \startitemize[joinedup] \item First enumeration. \item Second. \item Third. \stopitemize \startitemize[joinedup, margin=1em] \item First enumeration. \item Second. \item Third. \stopitemize \stoptext ++++++++++++++++++ The first example is without indentation, its fine. But the second example does not work properly, it makes the indentation, but ignores the joinedup, so that one has again empty lines between items. I think "joinedup" is the wrong feature, which is the correct one for my purpose? Huseyin

Overlapping \starthanging \stophanging with side captions

Hi, I'm trying to have extra explanatory text on the side of figures that is not part of the figure's caption. I can get a single figure to work but am having problems when there are multiple figures one after the other. I'm new to ConTeXT and have looked at the Details Manual but have not been able to fix this. I've been using something like: \starthanging{ \placefigure[force][fig:first]{Caption 1} {\externalfigure[first-figure][width=\textwidth]}} \inother[width=5cm]{Some text for the other bit} \stophanging \starthanging{ \placefigure[force][fig:first]{Caption 2} {\externalfigure[second-figure][width=\textwidth]}} \inother[width=5cm]{Some text for the other bit 2} \stophanging and the two figures will overlap. strange index behaviour with entries inside separatedlist

Hello, I get wrong list entries when using my register entries inside separate lists. Example case included, even if it is a bit longer. For explanation, I have two lists, the correct index is in section 1.2 in the attached example and printed on page 3 (see test.pdf). The one that causes trouble is set in section 1.3 (green table) and printed on page 5. There the index links to page 4 instead of page 1, on which the entry is placed. The example gets more strange, as the wrong index entries only occurs if there is no regular text below the table in section 1.3. For testing you can uncomment line 70 in file test.tex. I hope anyone can help to explain that functionality. Best regards Wolfgang

arc notation Lucida

My primary plea for help is how to make an arc symbol over 3 letters in ConTEXt with lucidaot as body font. In pdfLaTeX I could use package fourier to get such an extensible symbol where \widearc was preferable to \widehat. Hans' new "about" regarding extensible glyphs is suggestive, but because I am kind of a dope, leads me to my secondary call for help: How can I directly enter the 'code' for a LucidaBrightOT character from the tables at TUG: http://www.tug.org/store/lucida/otmath-blocks.pdf and see the result? Or find the name to use in a math $ \symbolname $ environment? Thanks, Kitz

Dear all, A few days ago (10 April 2013, Vol.106, Issue 25) I posted a question about giving related but not necessarily adjacent floats the same number, as for example Fig. 2a and Fig. 2b. In the meantime I found a, not very elegant, solution that only partly satisfies me. Here is a working example: (I trust the cow and the mill can be found). %--------------------------------------------------- \useexternalfigure[SmallCow][cow.pdf][height=2cm] \useexternalfigure[MediumCow][cow.pdf][height=3cm] \useexternalfigure[Mill][mill.png][height=3cm] \definelist[figure] \setuplist[figure][prefix=yes,label=yes,alternative=c] \starttext This file is for testing the possibility of giving two related musical examples (in old and modern notation respectively) the same figure number with a. and b. as suffixes to the number proper. \placefigure[here][SmallCow1]{A small cow.} {\externalfigure[SmallCow]} A cow again, in two sizes. \in{Figure}[SmallCow2]a shows the same cow as \in{Figure}[SmallCow1]. \placefigure[here][SmallCow2]{{\bf a}. Is there a possibility, when using a combination of figures, to split it, in other words, to separate the figures spatially, to allow them to appear on consecutive pages, and maybe even allowing some text in between? Hi, I need to read the standard output of an external command. This is what I came up with: \starttext \startluacode f = io.popen "ls" context(f:read "*a") \stopluacode \stoptext It works with luajittex, plain lua5.1 and lua5.2, but it fails with a current luatex: ! LuaTeX error [string "\directlua "]:3: attempt to index global 'f' (a nil value) stack traceback: [string "\directlua "]:3: in main chunk. Why does this fail in luatex but works in lua5.2 ? What is the correct way to obtain the output of a command? Marco

As I wrote, wherever possible I use combinations for related examples, and they only give problems when the examples are too large to fit on the same page. The solution with itemize does not help here. With small enough figures the results seems not too different from that with Combinations. With large figures stacked vertically the lower one still gets cut off (and with it also the caption when it is placed underneath the figure). If somehow a pagebreak could be inserted between the two items, then this solution would probably work. But I have no idea how to achieve this. Inserting \page between " \startitem A cow\stopitem" and "\startitem A mill \stopitem" changes nothing. Best regards Robert

Hi Alan, Thank you for your reaction and your suggestions. Indeed, it is not exactly what I envisaged. I would be happiest if there were a way to add a and b as a suffix to the number, like Figure 2a. With combinations it is easy to have a general Caption and specific captions for the components of the combination. But for the List of Figures I see no other possibility than, for instance "2 Dutch scenery. a. Cow, b. Mill". In fact I have no problems when I can make use of a combination, but, as I wrote, sometimes combinations are impossible for lack of space on the page. What you describe as a challenge for Hans could be perfect, I think, provided an itemization can be interrupted and continued on next page. (I tried your liitle code snippet but ConText would not have it.) Splitting a float combination might turn out to be simpler. Only I have no clue as to how to achieve that. Thanks again. I found that using \setscript{nihongo} breaks the functioning of \hskip. Here is a minimal example. MKIV required. Text source is UTF-8 encoded text. In the first case without \setscript the Japanese \hskip properly functions, but just after the \setscript macro it fails (without err or mention). Why automated typesetting shouldn't be able to obtain the same results, like men – some day. Of course that needs much more than just typesetting-rules, e.g. some times one has to rephrase some sentences to get a good result, but this will be possible for programms in future, too. For typesetting alorithms it holds the same, like for chess programms in the past, now fulfilled: They will get to the men-level, and even (far) beyond that. Huseyin

Different fonts for titles

Hi there, how can I use a different font for titles using simplefont? (chapter, section, subsection, ....) At now, I use (e.g.) \definedfont[name:fontname at 12pt], but for many fonts, that results in bad kerning (empty space between characters), but for some fonts, that works. So, is there a better way to change easily the font (using Simplefont maybe), and how to set the title-fonts (no typescript, if possible :)) Thanks! Huseyin

Too many word-breaks in consecutive lines

Hi (sorry for many questions today :)), with German you often have the problem, that words are long (most often much longer than english words). So ConTeXt have to break them. But there is a typographical rule: "Do not break words at the end of lines in more than three consecutive lines." So four (or more) breaks each ofter another (line), is forbidden and considered as ugly! By default, ConTeXt does this in many cases, specially with DIN A5 and long words. And I have to manually fix this in every case, that is normal and ok. Is there a way to highlight these attempts of more than three consecutive breaks in one paragraph? Would be easier to find, and to not-oversee. Future suggestion: Perfectly ConTeXt would try to avoid those breaks, but I suspect that would end in ungly kerning and unnormal gaps between words, correct? Huseyin

But today a new problem arises, I hope I made this example minimal enough: ++++++++++++++++++++++++++ \setuplayout [grid=yes] \usemodule[simplefonts] \setmainfont[AGaramondPro] \starttext erscheint, aber stetig und beständig ist, hat vor Gott mehr Wert als das, das du zwar auch fortlaufend, doch ohne innere Überzeugung erfüllst. \stoptext ++++++++++++++++++++++++++ It seems that gridding does not work properly here, as you see, we have an empty line after "zwar auch", why, and how to fix this? (If you do not have this font, look at the attachment.) And if the reason is not clear (as gridding conflicts some times with other rules without obvious reason), is there a workaround? Thanks! Hello, using Simplefonts, is it the correct way just to write: \usemodule[simplefonts] \setmainfont[AGaramondPro] [protrusion=quality, expansion=quality] \setupalign[hz, hanging] \setupbodyfont[AGaramondPro,11.5pt] for setting the fontsize (it works). Hello, I need to identify number of pages by Lua of an image which is to be inserted. The image can be of all various types supported by Ctx - e.g. .png, .pdf. I've been using the following code so far (based on a mailing thread in the past): ---- function nOfPages(fn) local fig = figures.push{name = fn} local info = figures.identify() figures.check() local n = fig.used.pages figures.pop() return n end ---- But the code above break Ctx in the case that the image doesn't exist. I'd need to modify the solution somehow so to return 'nil' or 'false' (or a error message) in the case the file was not found. How to do it? TIA. Hello, \cite[A] can yield a hyperlink to the bibliography. However, \cite[A,B] does not (and should). I suppose that this could be a bit complicated when using numbered references (rather than Author, year), in the particular case where one collapses the list of numbers, in which case the hyperlink could naturally point to the first numbered reference of the list. Of course I could write always ++++ Para 1 \blank Para 2 ++++ but it would be easiest, if empty lines in the editors would be automatically interpreted as "\blank" – and then without indenting of course. Dear all, I would like to have in my document floats, i.c. musical examples, that basically have the same number, for example, Ex. 3a and Ex. 3b, with text in between and possibly not even on the same page. It seems that it can be done (Wiki-page Command/setupfloatsplitting) but I have no idea how to to accomplish it for figures. Hi there, normally I use simplefont, with protrusion and typescript. But Simplefont does not recognize the regular, italic, and bold of AdobeGaramondPro correctly by default. So I tried to work with a typescript definition, and it works - with the exception of hanging (and protrusion?). Hello, I am having difficulties with the use of unnumbered chapters (\title) as well as the use of appendices. http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Titles#Unnumbered_titles_in_table_of_contents gives a few recipes for the use of unnumbered titles and their inclusion in the table of contents. Furthermore, placing chapters into \frontmatter and \backmatter might not always be a solution. In a document structured in *parts*, one might want to have an introduction (and other "front matter") as well as conclusions (and other "back matter"). One needs a means of switching section blocks, for example, without resetting everything. Hi all, this is a very far shot, but just maybe... I have been looking at prezi (http://prezi.com/) There's lots of aspects there that don't appeal to me, but I find the general idea very nice: a presentation is sort of a big poster, with some background graphics. You define areas on this poster into which your content goes (so these would be the "slides" in a conventional presentation). When you show your presentation, your viewer will zoom in on these areas and present them full screen, and it will move along a predefined path, thus showing the areas (slides) in a certain order. The nice thing is that you can, at any moment, zoom out and show the entire poster, thus giving an overview of your presentation in which only the bigger elements (headlines etc.) will be readable. Now I was wondering if the same couldn't be done with ConTeXt, pdf and javascript: producing a big pdf with a background image would be fairly easy (metapost's vector graphics would look good at any zoom level). Placing slides with content there could be done via layers. Zooming in and showing certain areas is doable (but obviously would depend on the pdf viewer, especially for the full screen mode). I have no idea if we have support for rotating areas in a pdf viewer. Would javascript be capable of automating this, i.e. defining areas in a pdf, displaying them at a certain zoom level, and move from one area to the next? I think this would be a nice alternative to traditional slide shows. Thomas

White Space after \startalign

Dear all, I have noticed a new problem in the \startalign environment recently. \startalign adds whitespace after the formula. If I remove the *\NR* from the last equation then the white space disappears. But I need to keep it for numbering the last equation. In any case, I thought that the last *\NR* is required in the *math align* environment. I remember getting errors for not including the last \NR when I was just starting out with ConTeXt. May be something has changed or my memory is not quite what I thought it was. Please let me know if I am making a silly mistake. Running heads, American style.

Since I spent the better part of two days puzzling over this simple task I thought I would share. The American style for running heads for non-fiction books is to have the current chapter on the left (verso) page and the current section on the right (recto) page. The text for each is near the spine and the page number near the outside edge. The layout must be set doublesided in context. Two commands are pertinent: \setupheader[leftstyle=bold,rightstyle=bold] \setupheadertexts[text][section][pagenumber][pagenumber][chapter] On the actual page spread the chapter title wll be on the laft of the spread and the section title on the right. But the \setupheadertexts command has them reversed. The recto gets described first and then the verso. The manual describes them otherwise. left then right, but it is really right, then left. Also the location parameter (first bracket pair) is mandatory for this kind of header setup. And just putting [] won't work. You have to specify a location. Now old hands will have memorized all these peculiarities long ago. Math typesetting problems

Hi all, I've run into a couple of problems with math typesetting. (I'm using the latest ConTeXt standalone beta.) The following doesn't print [x,x] at all: \startformula [x,x]_t = x \stopformula It can be fixed by using \left[x,x\right]_t, but I find the behaviour weird. Another problem I have is related to the positioning of minus signs in front of fractions. I would expect the minus sign to align with the horizontal line of the fraction, as it does on LaTeX. Below is an example formula to illustrate my point. The result seems to be independent of the font in use. \startformula -\frac{e^{\frac{4}{5}}}{4} \stopformula Janne

Now, I just saw this timing plan on the TeX Live website: http://www.tug.org/texlive/ March 27: sources committed, builds begin. April 8: tlnet (and TL'12) frozen, tlpretest starts, CTAN updates continue there. May 20: complete freeze for final build, no more updates, final doc tweaks, always more testing. Does this mean any improvements to the man pages should be in on April 8; or that you want them May 20; or has the deadline already passed and are any improvements due next year? mathcases look different in mathalign and formula

Hi all, While playing with \startmathcases, I discovered some strange (maybe wanted?) behaviour of \startmathcases and \stopmathcases: - The interline spacing in mathcases is different depending on whether the mathcases are used in a mathalignment or a formula environment. - Lucida OpenType math has some nice curly brace that is also used in cases environments. However, if \startmathcases, \stopmathcases is used in some mathalignment environment and the cases contain subscripts, the curly brace disappears and some "straight" brace is used instead. - When using superscripts instead of subscripts, the curly brace reappears but the cases look like not vertically centered in both formula and mathalignment environments. I produced an example demonstrating the above observations. In my opinion, the disappearing curly brace is worst of all of them since one frequently has formulas both with and without subscripts on the same page and different braces are quite easily spotted. Unusual error in Math mode

Hello Everyone, \starttext $ E [ w ] = 1 $ \stoptext produces Eaw]=1 using my context (current version: 2013.03.29 01:03). Needless to say that the MWE works as expected on the Context live @ contextgarden. I have no clue as to how to go about debugging the problem. So did a fresh install in a different directory but still get exactly the same result. I have a file called title.tex which should be followed on the next page (title verso) by the file copy.tex. but a blank page occurs between the two. error calling font.getfont() on certain fonts

Hi all, I get an error when I run this code: \ctxlua{font.getfont( font.current() )} (Complete example below.) Oddly, whether or not this fails depends on the font. The issue does occur with both today’s beta and Tex Live. Different Horizontal Lines with Tabulate

Hello, I have a table in which I have to group a number of rows together. Let's say I have a table with two columns, the first is an item ID and the second a multi-line description for that item. Say I have ten items in the table and I need to group Item 1 and 2, 3 and 4, 5 and 6 and so on. Due to the description being quite lengthy in some cases, I would like to use some sort of horizontal rule between items. It seems I have to following options: 1. Using horizontal rules of two different thicknesses (eg. thicker between groups and thinner between items within the same group) 2. Using horizontal rules of two different colour (eg. black between groups and a light grey between items within the same group) 3. Using horizontal rules of different lengths (that is, full length between groups and only in the second column between items within the same group) Are any of the above possible with tabulate? I could not find anything to achieve any of those. I am quite used to tabulate as my table framework, so I would prefer to use that. If that's not possible however, I'd be happy to use something else. Any pointers would be much appreciated. Thank you, Malte.

A thinner hrule for headers

Hello everyone, I'd like to know if it is possible to get a thinner hrule in headers (mkiv). Right now I am using \setupheader[after=\hrule] replacing hrule with thinrule or hairline results in space below the header text and the line, and the line actually spans two lines. Hi, The uploaded beta has marco's ugs fixed (minus one) plus some (less important) pending issues in test files. The main change is that the root setup commands of enumerations, notes, formulas, floats, etc can now be used to set up the counters (was only possible by explicit setups e.g. per float). Hello, \startpagefigure[...] ... \stoppagefigure enlarges page by 1 mm in both directions. This is an undesired effect as when the printer has auto-select-page mode on (which is useful when printing a document with mixed A4 and A3 pages) and an A4 page (210 x 297 mm) is enlarged to 211 x 298, the printer doesn't (auto)choose A4 but a nearest BIGGER page (8.5 x 13 in page in my case). Hi, shouldn't this work? \setupuserpagenumber[number=34] \starttext \dorecurse{20}{\userpagenumber \page} \stoptext I must admit that I'm pretty confused about pagenumbering; there are too many options of \setup...pagenumber and \setup...pagenumbering for my simple brain now, and I often don't know which is supposed to do what. \setuplabeltext [chapter=Chapter ] enables a label in chapter headings. Sometimes, one wants to have an unnumbered chapter-level structure that otherwise appears in the table of contents, bookmarks, marking, etc. without having to make many special definitions. One suggests: \definehead [NOchapter] [chapter] \setuphead [NOchapter] [incrementnumber=no,number=no,bodypartlabel=] \starttext \startNOchapter [title=Introduction] \stopNOchapter \startchapter [title=First chapter] \stopchapter \stoptext And then adding NOchapter to the contents combined list, to the bookmarks, and so on, not to speak about marking. Ugh! Much easier would be the occasional use of \startchapter [title=Introduction,incrementnumber=no,number=no,bodypartlabel=] \stopchapter but this does not work! One gets: "Chapter Introduction". That this does not work I suppose might be somewhat of a bug... Even better, more coherent, more logical, would be \startchapter [title=Introduction,incrementnumber=no,number=no,label=no] \stopchapter (Note that "label=no" is used for lists). This would also have the advantage of allowing the chapter labeltext to be defined for each language, rather than be empty, so that it could then be simply turned on or off. In fact, label=no would be the default setup. Alan

Hi list, While learning the very basics of context, I stumbled upon the following bug: When I try to use \setupenumerations in the latest beta (2013.03.22 12:06) for multiple enumerations, the alternative=... is ignored for all but the first enumeration. A minimal example demonstrating what I mean is attached. This bug, however, seems not to be present in the TL version (2012.05.30) of context. I don't know if this is a well-known bug and apologize in advance if this happens to be the case. Tobias

Hello, \setupheadertexts [chapter] will center the current chapter title (or abbreviated version using marking=) in the running page headers. However, how can one also put unnumbered chapter-level titles (\starttitle\stoptitle) in the running headers? \setupheadertexts [chapter,title] seems natural but does not work. Also, what seems to be a bug, the running text does *not* get reset to empty upon leaving the chapter. Suggestion for bibtex: command to switch between upper and lower case for title

Dear context folks, I would like to have the possibility to change between upper and lower case in titles for bibliography items, e.g. for English and German items. This is controlled by the bst-files as described in [1]. But changing these files after an update is rather annoying. Is there maybe even such a function that I do not know? setups in the latest Context release

Hello Everyone I have been using the following setup (provided by Wolfgang on this list) to format my chapter headings till now. However, it does not work since I upgraded by context installation today. If the entire *\startlinealignment .... \stoplinealignment* block is copied outside the setups then it works fine. So the change must have been in the interface for *setups*. Please let me know if there has been a change OR I have made some kind of mistake. Hello, I have a *project* that consists of a book in 3 volumes. Each volume is a *part*. Each volume or part has a (recto-verso) title page. Each volume or part also has front and back matter: table of contents, bibliography, index, ... Each volume or part also has *appendices* Thus, I have 3 *products* corresponding to the three volumes. Each product has *components*: chapters, appendices, ... Now, I would like the second volume to know that it is Part II and the third volume to know that it is Part III. I would also like to continue the chapter numbering in succession in each volume: i.e. 1, 2, 3 in Part I; 4, 5, 6 in Part II; 7, 8, 9 in Part III. Furthermore, I would like the appendices to do likewise: i.e. A, B in Part I; C, D, and E in Part II; F in Part III. Of course, I need to specify in my *environment* \definestructureresetset [default] [0,0] [1] \setuphead [part] [sectionresetset=default,conversion=Romannumerals] But... how do I propagate the numbering from product to product, that is part to part? Everything was just fine when all of the parts were collected into a single product having a unique front and back matter and all of the appendices at the end... It should be simple, but sometimes I fail to see the obvious! :) Alan
