Halt ConTeXt on Certain Warnings/Errors

Hi all, Is there are way I can have ConTeXt halt on particular warnings or errors? In particular, I like it to spit the dummy when it finds an unknown reference. Otherwise, I end up with the unknown references in the document that I sometimes don't find until much later. At the moment I grep for "reference" when I run context, as in context *.tex | grep reference ...but I thought there might be some more elegant way to do this. Hans, Thankyou for your suggestion of using the \usereferences tag to reference formulas in another document. This is a good solution. However the example below doesn't give usable results because the references to the external formula output by test2.tex does not include the chapter number: test1.tex: ------------- \starttext \chapter{Chapter 1} \placeformula[one] \startformula x = y \stopformula \placeformula[two] \startformula y = z \stopformula \chapter{Chapter 2} \placeformula[three] \startformula z = x \stopformula \stoptext test2.tex: -------------- \usereferences[test1.tex] \starttext \in{formula}[test1.tex::one] \in{formula}[test1.tex::two] \in{formula}[test1.tex::three] \stoptext In the output of test1.tex, the formulas are labeled (1.1), (1.2), and (2.1). In the output of test2.tex the references are labeled 'formula 1', 'formula 2', and 'formula 1' (i.e. the section number is not included). Using the \usereferences tag works if I label formulas 'bytext' rather than by 'bysection' and turn off chapter prefixes in test1.tex using the following at the start of the document: \setupformulae[way=bytext,prefixsegments=None] I would really prefer to maintain numbering by section, but to do this, I need test2.tex to show external references in the same way as test1.tex (by including the section number in front of the equation number). Is there a way to do this at present? orphans and widows in poems

Dear list, I have a document that contains a long poem and although it contains the following code: \setuplayout[setups=*lessstrict] \startsetups[*lessstrict] \setup[reset] \widowpenalty=10000 \clubpenalty=10000 \brokenpenalty=10000 \stopsetups I'm afraid that I get widow lines in the lines environment. embedding ConTeXt code in an xtable

I am now using xtable to have an XMLish document to store a table. How I can embed ConTeXt code like $\Delta{}N_{\text{test}}$ in the external XML file file with the table? In other words, having mathematical notiation in the table header? I tried various things such as: \expanded{\xmlflush{#1}}

Output from Context standalone (actual version) has wrong utf-8 encoding

Hi list rendering a very easy formula with greek text in it produces a pdf-document that has not a valid utf-8 string. I use evince for displaying pdfs under ubuntu linux. The document appears correctly on the screen but stops printing after a greek letter in a formula. The error-report says: Internal Error: cairo context error: input string not valid UTF-8 The same document compiled in live.contextgarden.net doesn't produce a mistake and can be printed with evince. I can still print the document correctly using 'lpr name.pdf', so it's not a big problem for me. But I don't know if that could be a problem for someone else. Hebrew vowel placement in ConTeXt.

I am new to ConTeXt and very impressed. Much thanks to Hans Hagen and Idris Samawi Hamid for an excellent introduction. I am using the Hebrew Ezra SIL Hebrew Unicode Fonts. My question concerns the placement of the Hebrew vowel points ("niqqud"). For most letters, the vowel points are placed too far to the left, as opposed to centered directly under the letter. A short example follows. For some of the letters, e.g., "Hebrew Letter Alef With Qamats" (kind of a t-shaped vowel underneath the alef), the vowel is correctly centered. For others it appears incorrectly to the left. (This may be connected with whether the letter+vowel is packaged as a single character or whether it is being composed on the fly.) I have used the same font in several predecessor programs (the makor package for lamed and the cjhebrew package for LaTeX) and the vowels points are placed correctly. Please let me know if you have any suggestions regarding adjusting the placement of the vowel points. (ConTeXt version info is at the end of the message.) I am using the latest TeXLive update version of MKIV (used tlmgr to update). In a compile time message Context says that it doesn't like: " ! mathvariant bold NOT bold-italic

Hi, as far as I have understood MathML, elements tagged with mathvariant=bold should be set upright bold, not bold-italic. Could this be corrected, please? Thank you very much! Learning ConTeXt from the Ground Up

Hello Everyone, I have been using ConTeXt for over a year now and worked out how to do most things I need to do. Every now and then, though, I need to do something that I cannot find any information about and in most cases I post a question here on the forum. I have received great help here over the months and like to thank everyone who took the time to answer my questions. The other day, however, I had a problem, posted a message here, got an answer and the answer did not quite work; I went back to the forum, got more help... In the process I realised that I should have been able to work this out myself; I was not even able to tweak the first answer and make it work. I am an IT engineer myself, but with little time (I guess I am not unique here) and even less experience in TeX. I guess what I am saying is, that I would like to gain a much deeper understanding of ConTeXt which will allow me to "program" in ConTeXt rather than just using the documented command. To gather information about ConTeXt I have - read the ConTeXt Reference Manual (http://pmrb.free.fr/contextref.pdf) - bought a couple of the published books by Hans Hagen - started reading the "TeX book" by Donald Knuth I have even briefly flirted with the idea of switching to LaTeX mainly because it would mean having a lot more literature and a broader community at my disposal. However, I just prefer the command structure and output of ConTeXt. Can anyone relate to my problem? Am I on the right track? What else should I be doing or reading to really break into ConTeXt? Alignment of inmframed

\inmframed (and by extension \definemathframed[...][location=low,...]) does not get the right vertical space. For example, \starttext \startformula \ln (1+x) = \inmframed{x - {\frac {x^2}{2}}} + \frac{x^3}{3}-\cdots. \stopformula \stoptext Note that the two fractions do not align at the horizontal bar. Is it possible for all expressions to be aligned at the math axis? Aditya

I'm trying to typeset a book. It has two columns, and some floating diagrams. My problem is that the floats aren't going where I want them to and I can't work out how to fix it. UWIN?

Out of curiosity, has anyone tried porting ConTeXt to the UWIN environment? UWIN is very much like cygwin in being a "Unix on Windows" environment. However, it is not based on GNU but is Real Unix code from AT&T Bell Labs. Many of the utilities are simply the latest versions of the original Version 7 Unix utilities, others are from BSD, System III and System V. The shell is genuine ksh93, not pdksh or bash/dash. There is a POSIX dll to provide a complete POSIX api. This is AT&T's own, not the "POSIX subsystem" from Microsoft. The cc command is a wrapper for Visual C, gcc or whatever you have. Instead of the usual autoconf..configure..make..make install dance you can use nmake. I can run the usual Windows context with a bit of fiddling but it would be nice to use the regular setuptex shell script et. al. -- Bill Meahan Westland, Michigan

I use a very recent version of ConTeXt MKIV, and I was following the instructions on this Wiki page: http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Mixing_XML_and_ConTeXt . However the "contml" module cannot be found and the hyperlink to it on the Wiki page is invalid.

The inkscape command works okay from the command line. Should I upload the SVG and manual PDF output somewhere? MOving from MkII to MkIV / EPUB

Hello folks, I have a ConTeXt Project for a small and simple book, that has the 'basic example' project structure with .../images, .../chapters, .../products etc. I use a Makefile to comppile the book when in the .../chapters directory, as attached below. I use "texexec --pdf" and probably ConTeXt MkII from the MacTeX 2012 distribution. I'd like to make an EPUB from this book as well. I suspect that means going over to LuaTeX/MkIV and doing extra stuff. I got lost in the ConTeXt documentation (for as much as there is, old and new) and would appreciate an instruction on how to do this that does not suppose I am a ConTeXt wizard who is doing stuff like this daily. Is there such a thing? Typefaces ... how does this work?

I want to adjust my document to have Lucida as main typeface, but with brief passages (a few words at most) in a typeface that has the IPA glyphs like Gentium. I've skimmed the manual and the ConTeXt garden Wiki but I do not yet understand which commands I should use where and with which options to achieve this -- preferably in a concise way. Could someone please explain and point out what most current documentation I should read and in which order to fully understand how to work with typography in ConTexT? (Obviously I am not a typographer or typesetter, I just write documents.) I am in a hurry now to complete my document so I would appreciate concrete hints to help with my current need. Still, I am interested to learn a lot about this functionality in the long term.

Test example for problem

The context docment below shows two anomalies. One is the occurrane of the "unknown font latinmodernmath-regular, loading aborted" and two is that the compilation process halts on the first 'D' in the word Dutch, and no item bullet is typeset. Hi, this is probably a question with very simple solution, but I cannot figure it out or find a solution in wiki or manual. I just want to print simple booklet and after and after picking papers from printer do a single fold. With the following code the TITLE PAGE is correctly placed to the right of first sheet but all pages have backspace and page number on the right edge. bug in compressed linenotes (and two ideas about them)

Hi Hans, I'm afraid I found another bug in linenotes (http://www.ousia.tk/compressed-linenotes.pdf and http://www.ousia.tk/compressed-linenotes.tex) When a compressed linenote is located at the beginning of the line, the inbetween distance from \setupnote is suppressed, but the distance from \setupnotation isn't. This happens either linenotes are in paragraph form or not. I have also three suggestions on the linenote spacing. I'd be highly pleased that Thomas and Idris could comment on them, since they are the experts on the topic. The first one is more a question, because I'm not sure whether this is already possible. Could I set a variable length in inbetween from \setupnote and distance from \setupnotation? This would help better spacing in linenotes. Sorry for asking, but I tried in the past and I wasn't able to do it. The other two suggestions are about enabling different spacing options for compressed linenotes than the standard spacing for linenotes. The sample shows that without separator, compressed linenotes have more blank space than standard linenotes, since compressed linenotes without separator have two added spaces without interruption. How about a compresseddistance option that assumes there is no separator and sets a single space? In the sample, compressed linenotes are preceeded by a 2em space, where standard linenotes are preceeded by a 1.5em space. Having more space for compressed linenotes than for standard ones may be misleading in some cases. And even using a separator, being able to specify different distances would be also extremely helpful, because it is not always the case where separators need more space before than after (as line reference numbers need). How about implementing two options such as compressedbefore and compressedafter that would achieve this? BTW, I tried to enclose the sample within a TEXpage, but it didn't contain the linenotes. Can I fix this by downloading the proper font? Hi Hans, as I posted to the list in the past and it has been confirmed by Wolfgang Schuster, there is a bug that prevents the proper separation of paragraph notes from text body. Some issues with \unit

Hi, most of these issues already have been discussed last year¹, but they don't seem to be solved, yet. 1) \unit{10^3} does display as 10✕10³. This is confusing and wrong. 2) Expressions like \unit{e3} result in ✕10³ instead of 10³. The multiplication sign should be dropped in this case. 3) The minus sign: \unit{e-3} It's too long. Hi there, using the latest beta, I have tried to change the x font size from 0.8 to 0.9, but it doesn't work. distinguish different characters from different languages

Hi, Is there a way in ConTeXt to distinguish (or recognise) different characters from different languages, especially distinguishing those used in China, Japan and Korea (CJK) from English. For example, sentence(1) and its translation (sentence (2)) below are mixed English with Chinese characters, as far as I know, Chinese write 排版 as typography. (1) translation: 据我所知，中国人将typography写作排版。 (2) If I input this sentence in the ConTeXt source file, how can I recognise English characters and Chinese characters respectively so that I can insert space (say, 1/4 space) when nesting English words into Chinese (the result of sentence (2) in PDF file will look like this: 据我所知，中国人将 typography 写作排版。) Are there some materials or topics about this? Layers: corner, location

Hello, I'm trying to understand meaning of "location" and "corner" keywords of layer definition (http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Layers#My_first_Layer) The goal is to place a logo (here: a \framed) to the top right corner of the page, with vertical and horizontal shift 5 mm into the centre of the page. The working code is: ---- \definelayer [Logo] [location={left,bottom}, x=\paperwidth, y=0mm, hoffset=-5mm, voffset=5mm, ] \setlayer [Logo] {\framed[width=4cm,height=1cm]{LOGO}} \setupbackgrounds[page][background=Logo] \starttext \input knuth \stoptext ---- Although it works, it's a result of many attempts. I don't understand why "location={left,bottom}" is the correct choice although the referential point of the logo is *right-top* corner and I'm placing the logo into the *right-top* corner of the layer (page). I played with "corner=" and "location=" combinations but - it seems the only one which gives the good result is the one above. Could anyone explain this? Thanks in advance. Dear All, in my book I want to place the index (aka register) of places. Some of them are mentioned very often (>10). I want to keep that location in the index, but not to create references to all occurrences. In one old book I've found the following solution for this: in the index there are first three page references listed for that index entry followed by 'and many' phrase. Can something like this be done in the ConTeXt (MkIV)? No interactivity is needed. The PDF output will be used just for printing. \setupregister[index][coupling=yes] is not exactly what I want. rebuild font cache

Hi there, after installing a new beta this morning, I'm afraid that ConTeXt isn't able to find the installed fonts on my system (path is added to setuptex). It isn't the first time I experience this. I solved this in the past rebuilding the font cache. But now it doesn't work. mtxrun --script fonts --reload fonts | names | warnings are disabled (tracker 'fonts.warnings').../ctxbeta/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/base/font-syn.lua:723: attempt to index field 'treatments' (a nil value) How can I force the font cache to be rebuild? Missing keys in reference line (letter module)

Hi, the keys "name" and "phone" are not included in the reference line using the minimal example from the correspondence manual below. The reference line just contains the date. Also changing the alternative from "a" to "b" has no effect. What am I missing? I upgraded to the latest beta and the header of s-cor-01.mkvi states version 2013.01.14. In my component files, the tools for cross-references work except for \at and \in. These commands produce links that display properly but go to a null page, i.e., nowhere. If I modify a core lua file how do I remake the format file? Is this something that is done from mtxrun.exe? I would certainly prefer to use a hook rather than modifying a core file, but how do I identify the hooks that are available? Is there a list of hooks that are available, or a standard way that hooks are called from the context code so that I can look for an appropriate hook? Where do I place my hook scripts? Is there a guide that is available that might get me started? What I trying to do is map equation references to the equation number generated by context. So for example, if I have an equation: \placeformula \startformula \NC F = m a \NC \NR[eq:newtonslaw] \stopformula I need a way to log the fact that 'eq:newton' became something like equation (2.3). I hoped there was a tracker that printed this out (maybe there is, but I haven't found it). So I thought maybe I could find where equation numbers are defined by context and add a tracker. The code in 'strc-ref.mkvi' and 'strc-ref.lua' looked promising. Incidentally, is this where equation numbers are created, or should I be looking in another file? Is there a lua function that gets called consistently around the time equation numbers are defined where the equation reference (i.e. eq:newtonslaw) and the associated equation number are both available and could be logged? I tried adding a new tracker in strc-ref.lua to see if I could narrow down where the labels are created, but my tracker did not seem to work. Therefore, I identified a tracker that was working and tried to modify the output slightly only to find that this did not work either. It is not clear to me at present how context loads the lua files. Hans, Your reply below was very helpful. I looked at the context command line options and saw 'make'. After running this, the code changes took effect. Thankyou. I could still use help in identifying where equation numbers are defined in the code so that I can add a tracker. Do you have a suggestion of which function (or at least lua file) I should look in for this? I am also curious how hooks are defined, so that I can identify them in the code and see if there is one that would meek my purpose - also where the hook scripts are placed so that context can find them. Hello, just an idea: \page[header] and \page[blank] suppresses temporarily header defined by \setupheadertexts. But, when header is underlined by \setupbackgrounds[header][text][bottomframe=on], this frame (rule) is not cancelled - it still appears on the (blank) page. Wouldn't be good that \page[header] and \page[blank] disable header & footer frames (rules), too? Dear All, I'd like to type two blocks of text with different 'align' settings side by side. A desired output can be found e.g. in examples 1.9-1.10 in http://www.pragma-ade.com/general/manuals/style.pdf Here blocks have a background instead of frames though. Hi, I'd like to have my \startlines ... \stoplines indented in the following way: the first two lines unindented, the next two indented, and so on. Basically, this means that I'd like the pattern to be based on (mod 4) arithmetic and not (mod 2). Is it possible? If yes, how? More question and answers blocks \stoptext My problems: - Sometimes the answer is not broken up into lines correctly, but prints over the externalfigure, which is a marker, with the given answer is the correct one. - I want the question to stay together on one page with the answers, but sometimes there are pagebreaks in between. - I guess there are better ways to code this, so if you have a better ideas, go ahead. Last standalone version suddenly will not load user module

Hello ConTeXist. For several years, I use very often my library for processing CSV tables. Even 2 months ago worked flawlessly in both versions (standalone version and ConTeXt TeXLive 2012). I am update standalone version fairly often (at least one times for two months). Unfortunately, today I found out that my latest standalone version fails to load the library and the compilation is complete with an error message. I find now that I can not detect and correct a problem in the library. Maybe in it any longer unsupported commands. Can someone be read from the attached log file? Or I'll have to conserve the previous version of the standalone for my ConTeXt applications? I can, if necessary, to send my module... Dear All, as a newbie I am investigating various ConTeXt (MkIV) concepts and I feel that any direct comparison of the source and the final output would help me a lot. While in the ConTeXt reference manual I can see e.g. nice side-by-side framed text blocks, I am lost in various text box, framing or columns switches and unable to create something similar. While in this guide http://www.pragma-ade.com/general/manuals/style.pdf I can see many options for font expansion, something like this is not applicable to MkIV: \setupfonthandling [hz] [min=30,max=30,step=5] I've search for doc source in the source browser http://source.contextgarden.net/ but I still haven't found anything promising. Hello ConTeXist. Obviously I have a problem with expansion. My question is: How can I place the elements of the list into macros for later use? Basically, my point is that I want assign individual values into macros within the cycle of and those subsequently used in a buffer to creating my own report. Perhaps is can be understood what I want from my minimal example. Exporting labels from a ConTeXt document

I have a document with several equations included. I need to reference these in an external document. To automate the process, I need a mapping between the equation label (i.e., eq:my_eq_name) to an equation number such as (4.22). Is there a way to export this mapping possibly as a command line input? Or is there a log file I can parse to get this information (the *.tuc file did list equation reference names, but I did not see a mapping to equation numbers). If there is not a command line option to dump this information, what is the best way to extract it. Can I embed lua code in the document that reads the equation number as the document in processed? If I could read the number from lua, I could write this to a file. Any help is appreciated. -Lance Larsen

I have often the problem of moving footnotes (with activated grid setting). That means, the footnote is not on the same page as the footnotenumber, but moved on the next page. That apperas often if you have a book with many not-so-short footnotes. Maybe one has to accept that, but in some cases it is really ugly. How do you manish these cases, how to control in general this problem? It appears, if the footnote is not very short and the footnotenumber is at the bottom of the page (in the text). So the footnote on the same text would shift the footnotenumber on the next. Are there some automated strategies and keys in context, or is there no other way than manipulating the text itself? Hello there, I want to place a picture at the top on a page, and directly after that a chapter-title (without a page break). I tried it with the key "continue", but that does not work. Problems with columns and grid

Hello list, in the following minimal working example (using Mark IV), the \column command is ignored. It works if the grid is disabled or balance=no is set. I need the grid, and regarding the balance: without balance, the columns use the whole type area height, but I want additional text to appear underneath the columns. The height parameter doesn't seem to control the columns' height. So my question is: How can I make \column to work or how can I at least set the column height as a workaround? \setuplayout[grid=yes] \starttext \startcolumns%[balance=no] left \column right 1\\right 2 \stopcolumns \stoptext Kind regards, Joshua

PDF X-3 format.

Is there a way to convince Context to output a file in PDF X-3 format? Some of the newer presses and prepress software will accept this format and convert to CMYK automatically, and correctly for that particular press. ToC - right-alignment of roman numerals

Dear All, in fresh MkIV I use the following commands for building ToC, but I have no idea how to align the label (roman numeral) to the right. Including a large SVG image

Hi, I have a few SVG graphics of multiple megabytes. They contain a lot of objects (text/shapes). All graphics except for one gets properly included in my ConTeXt document. In place of the failed one there the gray placeholder box with 'status unknown'. I noticed that ConTeXt uses Inkscape to convert these SVGs to PDF. Is there a way in which I can increase the timeout for this conversion process? That is just a guess, maybe the problem is due to something else. Best, Sander

character spacing for guillemets in English

Is there a global way to insert a very thin (ca 1pt) unbreakable space before a right guillemet and after a left guillemet when the main language and character spacing are English, so that “«” and “»” in my source file are processed properly? The font that I am using puts them too close to the enclosed characters (typically, Greek). Basically, I need to borrow the French spacing for these two characters but have not been able to figure out how to do this from the ConTeXt source files. Alan
