Hi, How do you prevent ConTeXt from hiding (collapsing?) duplicate level 2 index items? For example: \startitem 5 array \index{hedgehog+SECTION A}hedgehog \stopitem \startitem 7 army \index{herring+SECTION A}herring \stopitem \startitem 100 bloat \index{hippopotamuses+SECTION A}hippopotamuses \stopitem The text "SECTION A" will only appear once in the index, right after hedgehog. I would like it to appear once per index term, always. Conditional float references

Hi, a couple of times the question came up¹²³ how to create more intelligent referencing. There are already mechanisms in the core, namely \somewhere and \atpage but they both have drawbacks. \somewhere happily prints its text if the figure is placed on the same double page. In fact, no text at all should be printed if the figure is visible. Furthermore it's a little verbose to use unless hidden in a custom macro. \atpage on the other hand doesn't hesitate to print “see figure 1.2 at page 42” while you're on page 42. I'm aware that automatic generation of reference text is problematic since the text depends on the placement of floats which in turn depends on the text which might result in oscillation. I'm not sure how likely this is to occur in practice. I don't know if there's interest in integrating such functionality into the core. Mathdesign GD with simplefonts

Hello list, Long term (silent) on-and-off user with two issues that require some support: 1. How can I use the Mathdesign GD math font in ConTeXt? I use simplefonts to load Adobe Garamond Pro, but mathdesigngd (name as reported by mtxrun fonts script) is somehow not found. At this time I fallback to ugly solutions with \text in math mode. And yes, I know about type-imp-mathdesign.mkiv, but obviously I'm not qualified enough to get it right. Minimal (not) working example: \usemodule[simplefonts] \setmainfont[Adobe Garamond Pro] \setmathfont[mathdesigngd] \starttext I want \m{x^2+y^2=z^2} in my text, and $\alpha\beta\gamma$ too. \stoptext 2. I would like to use the \followtokens macro from within metapost. How can this be achieved? Specifically, I trying to draw a rainbow-like figure with text "between" the colors. Regards, Magnus

wrong positioning of MP graphic in layer

Sorry for the so basic question, but what is wrong there? Besides that, I don’t understand how positioning in layers work. I have read the wiki, but I don’t get it (geometry isn’t my strength). x, y, hoffset and voffset are fine. But location and corner are mysterious to me. Changing them gave me no clue of what they are. The four mentioned options set a point in the paper. The corner could be the point of the graphic or text that would be set in the previously defined point in the paper. Well, if this isn’t wrong, what can location be? Question related to the placement of figures

Dear all, I would like to wrap text around two figures. I tried to use both placefigure and starthangaround without achieving what I wanted. So I moved towards you to get some explanations on the behavior of the commands. I have two figures and one paragraph. If possible, I would like to place one figure on the top left and the other on the bottom right, the text moving smoothly in between, something like (o is figure, x text) ooooo xxxxxxxx ooooo xxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx ooooo xxxxxxxx ooooo or even better xxxxxxxxxxxxxx ooooo xxxxxxxx ooooo xxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx ooooo xxxxxxxx ooooo xxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxx I can, of course, slice the text in two pieces and use either placefigure or hangaround but, then, there's a vertical space between the two paragraphs. LuaTeX fonts script update error

Just installed the ConTeXt standalone, and the fonts script doesn't seem to work: % mtxrun --script fonts --list .../context/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/base/font-trt.lua:11: attempt to index field 'names' (a nil value) Commenting out line 11 seems to make the script function. mathew

Is it clear, what I intend to do, or totally unclear? :) The question is simply to break a title in the TOC, without breaking it in the text. Or more generally: How to change the title in the TOC (maybe a complete other title, as in the text, like it is possible for the header by the key "marking"). TEXpage produces wrong bounding box with rotated images

Hi, when rotation is used, the TEXpage bounding box is incorrect. Angles multiples of 90° are correct, however. It looks like a bug. What I need is a new unit, a quadratic unit like this: Area Moment of Inertia - Metric units mm4 cm4 m4 This kind of units are quite common in civil engineer. Dear list, I would like to have \tex using [option=TEX]. But I cannot get it working, even if I setup \type to [option=TEX]. imposition 2SIDE: feature request

I know this is a bit silly, but maybe useful for a few people: the 2SIDE arrangement is nice for printing out and previewing book pages on A4 landscape. However, the arrangement has even and odd pages swapped. Would it be possible to define a scheme which does exactly the same as 2SIDE, but adds exactly one blank (unnumbered) page at the beginning of the document so odd pages end up on the right and every arranged page looks like a book spread? columns

I have some difficulties with columns inside a framedtext. The example below shows that columns does not work inside framedtext, whereas simplecolumns does. However, the latter does not show rules between the columns. Can I have both? Is columns definitely not working here or is it temporarily until something is fixed? Hi, Is it possible to use Nibus Roman with MkIV. I have to send a document where the font used **must** be Times New Roman or Nimbus Roman. I tried using a clone (Termes), but I was told that I must use Times New Roman or Nimbus Roman. (It is a matter of regulations, so it is not possible for me to explain that Termes and Nibmus Roman are essentially the same). So, is it possible to use Nimbus Roman (type1 font) in MkIV? I would like to have the same figure in multiple places in my document, but each instance should use the same figure number. \starttext \placefigure[right][fig-3-36]{}{\externalfigure[cow.pdf][width=2cm]} Here is the first instance of a figure, \in{Figure}[fig-3-36]. \placefigure[right][fig-4-200]{}{\externalfigure[mill.png][width=2cm]} Here is \in{Figure}[fig-4-200], just to spread things out. \placefigure[right][fig-3-36]{}{\externalfigure[cow.pdf][width=2cm]} Here is the original \in{Figure}[fig-3-36], but I would like for it to show the same figure number as the first instance \stoptext But I want the figure to be associated with certain text so that the user doesn't have to flip back to the original instance (it's a workbook of physics problems so certain setups get re-used). Any thoughts or suggestions would be great.

Hello! Inspired by some informal discussions at the recent ConTeXt meeting I started to write a *really* basic ConTeXt tutorial. However, before I get further than the first six chapters, I'd like to get feedback on it, especially on the content, but also on the layout. The file is (at least temporarily) available at <http://www.lucet.fi/pdfs/ctxbasics.pdf>. I know already that there are a few things missing in the existing chapters, but I'd like to know if the document is any good and if the style is suitable for such a document. I knew this commands, but that is, what I meant with this problems I had. In a large document often empty pages (but with numbers) appear infront of a new part, or chapter, because this new part has to be set on a odd page, for example. And so I have always to deactivate all things, and activate them after this empty page again, exactly with these commands above. That is, why I had the pseudo-algorithm idea, that context should just look after, which pages are empty, and to clear everything on them (or: to not set anything on them, if there is no text). That would give perfect result with only one single command, without switching all the way. Huseyin

Hi there, since long time I always use hacks and complicate uses of \setuppagenumbering[location=] and \startfrontmatter \stopfrontmatter in different places of my documents, which habe often sideeffects and make problems. All this just for realizing a very simple rule: If the page is empty (no text), then it should be "totally empty", that is: No header, no footer, no pagenumber. But apart from this, do nothing – do not change effects of partnumerings (like \frontmatter does), or anything else. That is all I need. Is that easy to realize without on/off-commands, which makes confusing in a large document? Thanks. Huseyin

Hi, I wonder if it's necessary to manually load the MetaPost variables using LoadPageState. Some of them are static and do not require an update on each page, e.g. NOfPages, but many of them might change on each page, e.g. OnOddPage, PageNumber, TextWidth. Forgetting to use LoadPageState easily results in perfectly valid code producing wrong results, which might not be hard to spot. Dear all, I have problems with the placement of floats. I need them to be placed in the outer edge of the text, but Context puts them in the middle of the page. The outer, inner, outeredge, inneredge, commands do not work. Right and left do work. Preferably the criterium option should also work, e.g. criterium=0.67. A minimal test file is attached. Try it out with a dummy, or with cow picture, or with any other picture of your liking. I updated my context installation today to a bèta version. The version is: 2013.08.30 02.05. Breaks in TOC

Hi there, two questions about formatting the TOC or the titles in the TOC: 1. How to formate the titles different in the text and in the TOC respectively? I only mean line breaks. E.g., see this minexample: \starttext \completecontent \startsection[ title={Eine sehr, sehr lange Überschrift, die auf jeden Fall irgendeine Art von Formatierung benötigt}, label={Eine sehr, sehr lange Überschrift,\\die auf jeden Fall irgendeine Art von Formatierung benötigt}, marking={Eine sehr, sehr lange Überschrift,\\die auf jeden Fall irgendeine Art von Formatierung benötigt}] \stoptext That does not work, label and marking are the wrong keys for setting the TOC-Title, which have no effect on the title in the toc, which one is the correct key? 2. How to prevent page-breaks after some title in the TOC? E.g. I have a chapter title in the toc, and after chapter-titles there should be no immediate page-break. question about linespace adjustment

Hello, I'm working through the reference manual trying to understand how things work in regard to fonts. I'll be submitting clarifications and elaborations to the manual in an attempt to help other non-experts to grasp the design of ConTeXt. There's a point that's confusing to me in section 5.5, Line spacing. On page 108 of the manual it says "Linespacing alters when a new bodyfont is used or when linespacing is deﬁned explicitly by \setupinterlinespace (which is explained later)" But on the next page it says, "When you make a font switch the linespacing is adapted when you give the command \setupinterlinespace without any setup parameters and also when you add the key reset, for example..." So here's why I'm confused. When you change fonts, (a) does linespacing get changed automatically, or (b) do you have to say \setupinterlinespace? If (a), then why does the second quote above seem to say you need \setupinterlinespace to make it happen? If (b), then isn't the first quote above inaccurate? Is there a distinction being drawn here between "when a new bodyfont is used" and "when you make a font switch", or are those just variant phrasings for what is intended to mean the same thing? What do \start and \stop mean?

I found \start and \stop referenced in the context reference manual (e.g. section 5.5). While \startXYZ - \stopXYZ pairs are discussed earlier, I can't find any place that \start and \stop (with no suffix) are described. They seem to be used like \bgroup and \egroup. Is that right? They are defined in core-sys.mkiv, but I can't figure out from there what they actually do. I'll contribute documentation for them if someone can tell me what they mean. Thanks, Lars

fake feature “extend” behaving weirdly

If the scaled variant is used before the regular one then the latter will appear scaled as well and the spacing (bboxes?) gets messed up. PDF Transparency and ConTeXt

Hi, I have written up a question on TeX.SE: http://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/135543/pdf-colour-space-and-context Aditya mentioned that the problem with transparencies is that it is likely a known bug with Adobe Acrobat Reader: "I remember similar questions being asked in the past, and the conclusion was that it was a known bug in Adobe Reader." Has anyone else come across this issue and found a way to resolve it in ConTeXt? I ran into what I think is a similar issue with LaTeX and was able to resolve it using the following command in the preamble: \pdfpageattr{/Group << /S /Transparency /I true /CS /DeviceRGB>>} I have not yet tried to reproduce the problem in either LuaLaTeX or LaTeX. Hello, I update my ConTeXt setup about every couple of weeks. I use Ubuntu font in some of my documents. My setup from 2013-09-11 was selecting the specified fonts correctly. However my setup from 2013-09-25 (today) selects "Ubuntu Light" when I specify just "Ubuntu". When I specifically ask it to use "Ubuntu Regular", it forces this weight everywhere (including places where I specify \em). But when I try to rebuild the font cache, I get the following error (with option verbose): resolvers | resolving | remembering file 'font-otp.lua'cannot open : No such file or directory I don’t know what I’m doing wrong, but I get the error as root also. Confounding colour conundrums

Hi, In the attached example, I thought the word *Website* should be *orange*, but it is *blue*. If *color=blue* is removed (from \setupinteraction[state=start]), then the word *Website* is *dark green*, which is also unexpected, because the only place *dark green* occurs is in the setuplist for the chapter's page number (i.e., pagecolor=darkgreen). It appears that the default colour for links embedded with \useurl bucks trendy traditional *blue* hyperlinks, favouring *dark green*. (*Black* would also make sense as a default.) I am confounded because the code explicitly contains the line: \setupurl[color=orange] I thought that that would set the external hyperlink colour to *orange*. In the same document, how do I set: - hyperlink colours to *orange*; - index page number colours to *red*; - table of contents text to *dark cyan*; and - table of contents page numbers to *dark green*. Hi, I get a “Missing { inserted.” error under certain circumstances. Here is an example: \starttext \blackrule [height=8cm] \startpostponing \placefigure [] {foo}{bar} \stoppostponing \blackrule [height=15cm] \startlines a b \stoplines \stoptext I used black rules to insert boxes of a particular height, any content would do. Funnily enough it works with \placefigure [] {foo}{bar}, but not with \placefigure [] {foo}{bar} I have no clue what's wrong here. Marco

I am so disappointed that I cannot attend the upcoming ConTeXt meeting in Brejlov, but as I type this I am remembering vividly the hospitality and affection shown by all at the 2010 meeting, especially Pavel's father, to this tee-totalling vegetarian---not something that lands up at the Brejlov Inn too often, I imagine! The reason for my absence this year is that I will be heading to India shortly to conduct what is known as "antim yatra" (final journey) in Hindi for my mother; I'll leave the details of what that implies to those who wish to search on DuckDuckGo ;). Anyway that is strictly an aside to this post. You'll have to forgive me if I am feeling sentimental, but Prague does, as it has throughout its history, enter one's soul. To walk through its streets is to be smitten by it for life. Recently I picked up a book that I would like to share as it may help provide a context to those travelling through Prague on their way to Brejlov. bug? gap appears in columnset

Hello, We have a document where a gap occurs in a columnset under certain conditions. It seems to be a confluence of: - 2 sections, each with 2-column columnsets - \page[empty] between them - the 2nd section has a tighter interline space The problem is that on the first page of the second section, a two-line gap appears where gridlines 50 and 51 are. It may be a coincidence, but 50 is also the number of lines per page in the first section. We've found that "coincidence" to be true even with different page and font sizes. Can anyone tell us a way to get rid of the gap? We've tried things like \setupcolumnsetlines[columnsetbibliography][1][1][-1] \setupcolumnsetlines[columnsetbibliography][1][2][-1] with various values for the last parameter, but nothing helps. Clean Machine, MacTeX 2013 installed, ConTeXt problem

As my computer died I had to set up a clean one. section numbers in margin eventually get placed too far left

It works fine for the first four sections. But sections 5 and 6 (on page 2) have the section number shifted further left from the correct position by roughly 10pt or so. It seems very sensitive to the layout. If I change the leftmargindistance to 0.25in, the section numbers are all placed correctly. I noticed the problem on my default context version: ConTeXt ver: 2013.05.28 00:36 MKIV current [from the Debian TL2013 pkgs] It also happens with the live ConTeXt and with vanilla TL2013. (Though it works fine with MKII.) Is this a bug, or just a change in setuphead that I didn't take account of? -Sanjoy

Difference between base and third

Bug in maths prime (derivative)

columns vs. paragraphs, and a question about fillinrule

As part of this legal document set that I have been working to put together, I needed side-by-side text. Looking at the wiki, I noticed that there are at least 3 methods: columns, paragraphs, columnsets. I only attempted two, but they seem to have quite different results. I understood that columns were for simple cases. However, in my MWE below, the \column command breaks the "columns" in unusual way. One can also swap out the order of the paragraphs and columns methods; the results are similar. Also, one can adjust the dorecurse command with additional lorems to see where the "columns" land on the page. Again results are similar. Any suggestions? Another question: I am trying to have the numbers in the \fillinrule command to be hanging so that the rules are lined up. Is this possible, and if so how best to do it? advTHANKSance. Why is my module not automatically included?

Hello list I tried to compile the CV from [1] with context. But it does not recognize the module m.resume.tex in the same directory, I had to use the flag --usemodule=m-resume.tex. Bug with adaptlayout

Hi, There is a subtle bug with \adaptlayout. \adaptlayout[1][height=max] does not work, e.g., \showframe \adaptlayout[1][height=max] \starttext \dorecurse{10}{\input knuth \par} \stoptext but \adaptlayout[2][..] etc work. The reason is the following. Typically, we use \adaptlayout[...][...] before \starttext at which point \realpageno=1. Now, \page_adapts_layout calls \page_adopts_check which checks if "\??pageadaptions\the\realpageno" is set. If so, it calls the pageadaptions and resets it to relax. Since all this happens before \starttext, it does not affect the first page. I am not sure what is the best way to fix this. Aditya

Using mkiv to what degree can one depend on the encoding of a font to be in texnansi form? 1. typescript fonts? 2. otf fonts? 3. type 1 fonts? 4. ttf fonts? 5. No guarantees? And does it make a difference if one uses \simplefonts versus typescripts? -- John Culleton

Another small \underbar issue

I just noticed the recent issue brought up regarding \underbar, and wanted to mention a curiosity that I have come across. After "RE: " the underbar is contiguous. However, if we change it to "Re: " there is a break in the underbar. This seems independent of font selected, althought I have only tried it was gentiumalt, texgyreschola, texgyretermes. I was writing a business letter recently and used what I think is proper, "Re: ", for the subject line. It was only then that I came across this. Is there an explanation for this? On a slight tangent, what would be the best way to tighten up the space between the "\hl" or "\fillinline" alternative, and the name of the signatory? Thanks. I found the following bug in \inframed, getting problems with inframing arabic words, try the following example \definefont[arab][name:arial*arabic at 18pt] \define[1]\awort{{\hbox{\setupalign[r2l]\arab#1}}} \starttext \awort{بِالصَّالِحِينَ}\blank \awort{\inframed{بِالصَّالِحِينَ}} \stoptext You see the difference: The inframed has right-shifted vocalizations.
