Hi, I am trying to export to epub. I found epub-mkiv-demo.tex and export-example.tex, and both compile fine, generating the XML tree. The instructions say that I have to run mtxrun --script epub --make --purge test but I get unknown script ‘epub.lua’. I don’t have epub.lua anywhere. It also says that the console would tell me what script to run, but it only tells me mtx-context | pdfview methods: auto default evince okular pdfxcview sumatra zathura, current method: sumatra (directives_pdfview_method) pdfview | command: wine "sumatrapdf.exe" -reuse-instance -bg-color 0xCCCCCC "epub-mkiv-demo.pdf" 1>/dev/null 2>/dev/null & The directories with the XML trees contain a script epub-mkiv-demo-pub.lua which I can run, but it doesn’t seem to do anything. I am clearly doing something wrong. Any hints on how to proceed will be much appreciated. Thanks, Matthias

Hello all, I would like to typeset a certain enumeration when a corresponding mode is enabled, like so: \defineenumeration [Solution] [text={Solution:}, headstyle=bold, before={\startmode[solution]}, after={\stopmode}, style=normal, title=no ] \starttext \enablemode[solution] \startSolution Enabled \stopSolution \stoptext This works, but when I disable the mode, I get the error message tex error > runaway error: end of file encountered mtx-context | fatal error: return code: 1 Is there a suitable incantation to make this work? K with combining macron below

Hi, I’m trying to use a k with a bar/line below: ḵ. The problem is that my font (Cardo) doesn’t seem to have this character in a precombined version. So, I need to combine the letter with the combining macron below: https://www.compart.com/en/unicode/U+0331 While this works with the default font, with Cardo the result looks off, i.e., the macron is not placed centered under the letter, but slightly to the right. How can I get the correct placement of the macron? Hanging indent in TOC

Hi everyone, I need some help customizing the default TOC so that it has hanging indents. Meaning that, if a heading spans more the one line, all lines after the second one should be indented. For example, if you look at this screen: [cid:image001.png@01DBCA3D.76664030] I would want "den" to be indented to the same level of "Von" in the line above. How would I set this up in ConTeXt? Metapost through context incorrect `hex` function output

Hi, I have found that the metapost `hex` function outputs a strange result when run through `context`. I'm not quite sure what is leading to this output, maybe `hex` is redefined in `metafun`? To reproduce, place the following in test.mp: ``` show hex "8d"; ``` Then run `mpost`, which results in the correct value: ``` mpost -numbersystem=double test.mp ... >> 141 ``` Running the following in context results in the following instead: ``` context test.mp ... >> 56 ``` For some more details on tool versions: ConTeXt: ConTeXt ver: 2025.04.28 14:29 LMTX fmt: 2025.5.7 int: english/english Metafun: metafun xl 2025-5-9 11:26 Metapost: version 2.02 (TeX Live 2023) (kpathsea version 6.3.5) For some reason I couldn't manage to load `metafun` in `mpost` directly to test it outside of ConTeXt, getting: ``` ! Why does \setvalue not work inside \startbodymatter?

I have a document setup with: \starttext\startfrontmatter(contains all front matter content)\stopfrontmatter \startbodymatter \stopbodymatter \startbackmatter \stopbackmatter\stoptext I was noticing very strange behavior where \setvalue was not showing up as \getvalue. I put it in lots of pllaces, but in the main part of the document, it wasn't working. Its like it was never set. After a lot of testing, I discovered if \setvalue is set inside \startbodymatter, its value stays unset. But I can set it in the front matter, backmatter, anywhere else. Here is my minimum working example, note that \getvalue{B} never appears, it was set within the bodymatter. \setvalue{A}{this is a test} \starttext \startbodymatter \setvalue{B}{Why is hits one missing?} \stopbodymatter \startbackmatter \dostepwiserecurse{1}{3}{1}{ \setvalue{C}{this is yet another test} \getvalue{A} \getvalue{B} \getvalue{C} } \stopbackmatter \stoptext What is going on? How to scale a TABLE to \textwidth?

I have a large table that spans multiple pages long. Its just about 1" too wide on the page, so I tried using various means to scale it just a little, such that it fits the page width. For example, I tried this way, by wrapping it inside \scale, but that ends up instead of splitting across pages, will and up seemingly putting it in an invisible box and causing it to split and display two (or more) parts side-by-side. Instead of the next part of the table appearing on the second page, it gets rendered really really small, and the second part of the table rendered right next to the first. intent in \setupbackend

I have a 2022 version of ConTeXt which I have used for the last 3 years. It has no problem with: \setupbackend [format=PDF/X-1a:2001, intent=SWOP2006_Coated3v2.icc] Recently I set up a separate more recent 2025 version of ConTeXt, and I get an error with the above intent statement. If I remove intent entirely, everything compiles correctly. I don't understand a great deal about the 'intent' statement, so bear with my ignorance. For the most part, whatever I produce is printed in BW/grayscale, not color. Two questions: (1) what has changed with the latest ConTeXt that causes this error with that color profile? (2) If preparing for BW/grayscale printing only, should I be using a different profile? I am assuming I cannot simply omit intent= completely. Julian

issue with "intent=cmyk"

Hi Hans and Mikael, https://www.pragma-ade.com/general/manuals/standards.pdf#page=3 seems to miss the CGATS001Compat-v2-micro.icc color profile "intent=cmyk". But lines 504-506 from lpdf-fmt.lmt read: elseif intent == variables.cmyk then intent = "CGATS001Compat-v2-micro.icc" profile = "sRGB-v4.icc,CGATS001Compat-v2-micro.icc" The grayscale color profile is missing (at least, when compared with "intent=rgb"). Accessibility and typesetting with Context.

Hi Everyone, Following up after the side discussion during the meet-up call, here my ideas that can be useful in the accessibility context: 1. Understanding the broader context around the interaction of the PDF readers, screen readers and text-to-speech engines. 2. Drawing attention to the aspects of information that can be or cannot be expressed in different modalities. 3. Giving examples of content and its presentation or interpretation by the assistive technologies in everyday life. Last but not least, I was thinking about doing something like "Ask me anything" on the list to gather questions and do quick and slow responses. I am definitely very eager to try the maths case of preparsing and preinterpreting the tagged output. I will put a simple document to replicate that curious case of Chrome/Brave and Adobe Reader giving differentcontent to NVDA. The list is intentional, for it is a rather broad topic. I want to get the idea what is the most interesting for people in the wild. A side note about me: I had my first experience with Latex years ago, but got back to Context through Pandoc and Markdown. I am working on a book and needed something that gives me stable output and good editing experience. I am blind myself, and have some experience with coding or code reviews. Greetings, I have 365 short poems; one for each day of the year. I thought I'd wrap each month in an enumeration and use the item numbers as titles. My MWE raises several questions: How do I center an index above its item? How do I keep an index and its item together? How do I keep an item's text together? I have the following command which I am using as part of \setuphead[chapter]: \define[2]\MyChapterCommand% {\framed[frame=on,bottomframe=on,leftframe=off,rightframe=off,topframe=off,align=middle] {\vbox{\headtext{chapter} #1 \blank #2}}} Together with the rest of the \setuphead[chapter] elements, it functions correctly, as indeed it should But as soon as I place the full description of the chapter head between a \startsetups.... \stopsetups (since I wanted to create a few different chapter possibilities as setups to choose from), the hashes in the above command cause an error. The error reads: You meant to type ## instead of # right?..... fatal error... Why is this? Julian

Hi Everyone, Adobe Garamond Premier Pro is a very popular font. Understanding that typesetting is both art and science it is not easy to find some neat guidelines on values for size and spacing for this particular font. There are threads on the web that mostly relate to self-publishing with regular text editors. I'm currently drafting a book using the 5.5x8.5 trim size, with typical outer margins of 0.5 inch and the inner one of 0.75 (including the gutter). Would you mind sharing the values for font size and any spacing adjustment for Garamond Premier? I am currently using 11.5pt for font size, and adjust spacing from the default 2.8ex to 2.9ex. Using whitespace between paragraphs set to small, in addition to the former values. It gives me roughly 35...36 lines per page. Thank you for your answers... Pawel

Hi Everyone, I've noticed one thing while tweaking my layout. Namely, the \showlayout command output is missing the value for the cutspace. The values for margins, text area, and backspace is listed, but the mentioned cutspace. The documentation says that cutspace is equal to backspace when cutspace is equal to zero. We can obviously set it to the desired value. Listing it in the output would be useful and complete the values for layout keys when debugging. Sending it as a possible thing to consider. How to force indents to always appear, even after figure?

My copy editor has warned that because my target audience is children, this will confuse them, so I need to make sure the start of a new paragraph always has an indent. I tried adding the 'always' detail to \setupindenting, see above, but that didn't help. What setting will make sure the start of my paragraph always gets an indent? Note, in my passage, I've marked every single paragraph with \startparagraph and \stopparagraph. --Joel

bytemap problem

Hi all, I've been playing with bytemaps (see the latest LuaMetaFun manual) and I have come across a problem when I create more than 15 bytemaps. This came about as part of a bigger project where I create a large bytemap and then make smaller bytemaps with the data from the large bytemap. Changing x or y to 3 will give 15 coloured squares, but a 4 X 4 grid and above gives black squares above 15 coloured squares. I can't see anything wrong with the code so I'm wondering if it is a bug. At the beginning of a report I would like to have a page with an abbreviation listing with for example HTML hypertext mark-up language CSS cascade style sheets etc The distancing where the long explanation starts should be the same at lets say 30mm from the margin and in case it jumps to a next line, it also should continue at 30mm from the margin and not back at the margin. Hi, At last week bachotex we (Tove, Mikael, Willi, Hans) cinducted the first in a series of experiments and presentations dealing with accessibility. After all, why bother more about pdf than of the tool that makes it. - we tested if qr codes were easier on users than tex error messages (experiment conducted with high end wooden ear-tags with qr codes made by Willi, who else) because after all humans are good in pattern recognition - we (read: Tove, well known from the "ts" unit) tested to what extend colors could be recognized (after all in Sweden PDF documents have to obey very strict rules wrt color); we will report later on this promissing "flagged pdf" (with color light bulbs triggered by pdf) experiment in an article - as side track (okay: logical follow up) we checked how users react on more vivid visual feedback (this is already supported but the manual was on purpose not yet added to the distribution); we will follow up on this at the context meeting You can do part of this experiment by adding this to the top of your file: % signal=qr (There's also a command line option plus a related script. The next upload will have the preliminary "signals.pdf" manual, just in case you have the needed equipment.) In that case an error will pop up a qr code. The idea is that after while you (or your mobile phone) will recognize these messages easier than parsing a log. It also fits more in todays paradigms. We might eplore easy installations with qr codes because after all that's how things are done these days. So, thanks to Tove, we ended up in modern times. Hi, we just saw the Accessibility Directive, now there is another demand: the TDM protocol (concerning the reuse of protected works for AI training purposes). Is it possible to implement these TDM Metadata when producing PDF files with ConTeXt? This technique provides a way to embed the rightsholder's choice into a PDF file. Hello! Since OpenBSD has upgraded to 7.7, I performed a manual installation of LMTX standalone after upgrading to my new OS version. What I did: download cont-lmt.zip into /usr/local/context/tex/texmf-context/ mv /home/dthiriet/cont-lmt.zip . unzip cont-lmt.zip cd source/luametatex/ ./build.sh (ou si ça ne marche pas pour des raisons d’autorisation: sh build.sh) cp build/native/luametatex tex/texmf-openbsd-amd64/bin/ depuis $HOME mtxrun --generate mtxrun --script fonts --reload Everything compiles, but the fonts are not found: fonts > defining > font with asked name 'lmsans10-regular' is not found using lookup 'file' fonts > defining > unable to define 'lmsans10-regular' as 'modern-12pt-ss-tf-' fonts > defining > forced type 'otf' of 'latinmodern-math' not found fonts > defining > unable to define 'latinmodern-math.otf' as 'modern-12pt-mm-mr-' fonts > defining > unable to define 'latinmodern-math.otf' as 'modern-12pt-mm-mb-' fonts > 'fallback modern ss 12pt' is loaded When I search my texmf-context file, I cannot find these otf files, so the problem isn't that I put them in the wrong place. I compared with my previous context install, and I can see the difference is that in the former my tree looked like this /usr/local/context | |-- texmf-context/ |-- texmf-openbsd-amd64/ |-- texmf This texmf/ folder, which contains fonts/ (with lmodern otf files and so on) and web2c misses in my current tree. But sometimes, for testing purposes, I want to make sure my code is functioning good, so I will go an un-comment all of the macros, and then compile, and it basically does a test, making sure all of the macros in my code function perfectly. When testing, it looks like this: \starttext \macroA\macroB\macroC\macroD\macroE %%% some more code \macroF{a}{b}\macroG\macroH \stoptext Because the actual file is quite large, commenting and un-commenting the lines takes a long time, and can lead to mistakes. How to force end-of-sentence space?

When I have a word like "U.S." in a sentence, I'm using code like this: After the U.S.\ Army left Vietnam, they focused on... ...that seems to make sure the space between U.S. Army isn't so big. My copy editor noticed that when I use footnote, there isn't the right space after, like. Here is a sentence.\footnote{This is footnote text.} This is another sentence. They are saying that after that, the space isn't the right size. Is there something similar to the first option that makes sure a full end-of-sentence space width appears? --Joel

*Not* starting a section at the very bottom of a page

This could be a bug report, but it is mostly a request for assistance. In https://www.pragma-ade.com/general/manuals/mathincontext-screen.pdf I see "2.11 Big operators" is at the very bottom of a page (no "content" of section 2.11 is on that page). This is an example of what I don't want, and anyone who feels the same way would consider this a (very minor) bug report for the (otherwise most excellent) math manual. For plain TeX, I have been using a macro I wrote called \need, so that a usage like \need 2cm would end the current page before omitting any more material, if there is less than 2cm left on the current page. I then used this in chapter and section macros (and anywhere else I felt like). I have played around a little bit with converting that macro for ConTeXt, but I'm not as confident that it Does The Right Thing in ConTeXt as for plain TeX. Q: is there a ConTeXt macro which does a \page if there is less space on the current page than specified by the argument to the macro? Thanks. Jim

Rotating and scaling images to fit a page

Greetings, I have many images, all with different aspect ratios, that I would like to collect in a document. Each image should be rotated and scaled to fit its page. My MWE uses an image's width and height to discern whether it's wide, tall, or square. This works, but I feel I'm reinventing the wheel. Is there a more straightforward way to implement this? Aligning sub- and superscripts

Hi, I was going through the ‘Mathematics/Mathematical glyphs’ section of the wiki. Unless I am missing something, the first method proposed in the section ‘Subscript and superscript’ ( https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Mathematics/Mathematical_glyphs#Subscript_an…) to align sub- and superscripts does not seem to align them with ConTeXt 2025.04.01. The following example: \starttext $T^a_b^c$ $T^a{}_b{}^c{}$ \stoptext produces (unless my eyes are deceiving me) twice the same output, with the subscript b below a. One possible workaround is to add 0-width spaces after indices (I just added this workaround to the wiki so that it shows one working option). This seems a bit of a hack, though (and not the easiest to type with most keyboards), and the results are not perfect (the space between the a and c looks a bit too wide to me; although that is probably subjective, and can be resolved by manually adding \kern s). Would anyone know if there is a better (easier to type and/or producing a better result without having to manually add negative \kern s) solution? Cheers, Florent

Why is this code not creating "Ibid" style entries?

I created this simple macro, for citing papers. Basically just use this format: \turabian{bibtextkey}{page range} or \turabian{smith1980}{10-23} ...and it places a citation. Now, one feature I needed was if the bibtextkey ever repeated, it should instead display "Ibid. p. 10-23" So if I have text like this... This is a passage about some trees. The trees were tall. \turabian{smith1980}{2-30} The trees were also really green.\turabian{smith1980}{40-44} ...the second citation just displays the "Ibid., p. 40-44". I did this by at the end of the macro, setting \setvalue{previousmymacro}{#1}, then checking if that value is the same the next time hte macro is called. So its just checking, if #1 is same as last time the macro was called, then use Ibid. Something though isn't working as expected. Thesis in ConTeXt

Hi, I just published my PhD thesis in ConTeXt (with graphics in LaTeX/TikZ) [1]. For a lot of typesetting tasks I got great help here. Thank you for making ConTeXt and thank you for helping me here! I published the source code here [2] to maybe give something back. For this community, probably the most interesting part are the data and acronyms "modules". ## Data For scientific papers, often you need to embed some measurement data. The simple approach here is to let some programs produce the data and then just copy them data for data into the text. This, however, is a really tedious and error-prone task when you do it multiple times. Thus, a colleague of mine develops versuchung [3] and dataref [4]. The first one is a Python library to output measurement data in a defined format and the latter is a LaTeX/PGF library to embed that data referenced by its key into a LaTeX document. For ConTeXt, this was not possible. Therefore, Versuchung is now able to directly output lua tables and "data.lua" [5] provides minimal tooling to read that data in a ConTeXt document. The idea is to have a function "get_experiment" to get all data of a specific experiment. The function returns another function that allows to give a specific string (the keys in the Lua table) to get the actual data. The meaning of returning another function is to be able to track all usages of the data (for example one can generate a datagraphy with this). Example usages are here [6] and here [7]. ## Acronyms I wrote the thesis in German but had the problem that a lot of computer science acronyms are in English. I therefore decided to use either the German long version (correctly declined) or the English acronym. However, this should happen in an automated way (I want to always write down the acronym in the source code) and it should track that the acronym is _always_ fully described before using it. This behavior is similar to the acronym package of LaTeX [8]. To simplify data transfer the logic and the acronyms are entirely in Lua and I just provided an interface for ConTeXt/TeX. The acronym logic is here [9], the TeX interface here [10]. It provides mainly the \acr command with a few arguments: \acr[f, l, p, g, d, a, b]{my-acronym} - f (full) to get the full acronym: acronym in long form in German, English long form and acronym - l (long) to get the acronym written out - p (plural) to get the plural form - g (genitive) to get the genitive form - d (dative) to get the dative form - a (accusative) to get the accusative form - b (bestimmt) to get the definite form (indefinite otherwise) A test document is also provided [11] (I attached the generated PDF for that document). This is _not_ generically usable. It works for the acronyms used in the thesis. I had a hard time figure out patterns for endings in German (I'm not a linguist) and basically provide exactly the patterns for the acronyms in the thesis. It may be useful anyway. ## General experience with ConTeXt so far I used LaTeX a lot, I've written my master's and PhD thesis in ConTeXt now. Recently, I also experimented with Typst. In general, I find ConTeXt way more consistent than LaTeX. I really like the key value interface for most functions. It also feels like (and is) a complete system (not like LaTeX as a system consisting of _a lot of_ different modules, most of them playing together just most of the times). I find Lua way easier to use as TeX as a programming language, therefore I prefer writing everything that contains programming logic in Lua. AFAIK, this aligns with ConTeXt. BTW, does a public Lua interface of ConTeXt exist with a reference what ConTeXt specific functions can be called directly in Lua? I find the ConTeXt source code hard to read. I dug around in the source code for typesetting references to personalize them and needed time to find the files that are responsible for this and understand the relevant variable and function names therein. When searching (grep) for a command, I often got some really long lists of commands containing the one I searched for, but I had a hard time finding the TeX and Lua code that implemented that specific command. I also needed some time to find out that manuals exist for most parts (first source for information was the wiki). When I found them, though, they were really helpful, especially for more low level knowledge (and as code examples). The context command line program is way better than the ones LaTeX provides (something like latexmk for example is simply not needed). Also, ConTeXt is way faster than LaTeX (though much slower than Typst but AFAIK, Typst is not as complete as ConTeXt). How to stop lists from being double-spaced?

When I set items in a list, like this: \starttext\startitemize[n]\startitem \input knuth \stopitem\startitem \input knuth \stopitem\stopitemize\stoptext ...it ends up placing the items in double-space, or similar, where there's about a gap of one text-height between lines, instead ofthe usual gap between lines. If you render the above, it makes a gap between the two quotes. Is there a way to make it have normal line width? --Joel

I see that lines 600 to 750 from lpdf-fmt.lmt include these metadata (even with WTPDF-1.0 accesibility and reuse), but somehow they don’t end up in the output PDF document. We pushed the first post texlive 2025 update. Apart from a few pending patches, we spend some time on what we call retrotex and retropost. retrotex: Due to external factors the decision was made to let luatex math default to a more conservative handling of fonts: we just assume that opentype fonts are implemented like traditional tex fonts. This makes math in the engine behave like xetex. The primitives that relate to controling some aspects of math rendering are obsolete (we also removed experimental additional italics mode code). This change doesn't affect ConTeXt (MkIV) because there we do things differently. The adapted engine will be used in texlive 2026 (but we already have it in the distribution). retropost: We had to spend some time on fixing a bug in the mp library, one that was introduced when the additional number models were implemented and that surfaced when testing files of a power user. It was a rather nasty one that only showed up when using equations with no viable solution. In the process we (MS and HH) had to consult the metafont books, because we basically had to check all relevant code, and then fell in love with bitmaps. That made us decide to bring back bitmaps in the mp engine even if it sounds somewhat going back in time. We actually had some other reasons but those will be revealed at the meeting. tariffs: Talking of the ctx meeting, we might have to make some decisions there. A recent post on the list indicated that some installations default to letter size paper format, which one canconsider a bad idea but let's put that aside. The fact that installations can adapt that way, makes that we can also implement a tex tariffs system (tts) in accordance with current and upcoming European guidelines. For instance we can make context run 25 percent slower when the main language is us-english or 50 percent when fonts originating at (spineless) big tech companies are used. It's not that hard to do this (via directives). We assume that at some point tex installations used in the usa have to provide similar means but we leave that to those responsible for the distributions. After all, they already have to deal with excluding files that show traces of support for commercial fonts. At the meeting we might also decide to default to Canadian English patterns or those used in GB. And who knows if and when we're forced to (or feel that we have to) remove software components from the engine that relate too much to big tech or come with unacceptable demands for conformance. The good news here is that we have no dependencies that can't be overcome. Maybe we should also support the euro as math marker or just ditch the dollar for that purpose. Mixed in with preparations for the upcoming BT we will come back to some issues reported on the list. We've been a bit silent for various reasons but Wolfgang made sure all went well which feels good. If MakeSomething is a command already "edef-ed", I can use tokens.getters.macro.MakeSomething to find the value. If MakeSomething has an argument which is determined within the lua block, then I can't use this hack. How to get TABLE to start on the same page, split when needed?

I was using tabulate, but ended up with some strange error I could not track down. So I switched to using TABLE, the error went away, but now I have a new problem: If the TABLE is really big, but fits on the next page, it seems to add a \pagebreak before, then shows the table. This is wasting way too much paper, it means I have instructions, then the activity appears on the entirely next page, with a big unneeded blank space given. I need the table to start, then split whenever the end of the page is reached. In the wiki, I found this comment from 2021: "Beware: Split tables often begin not on the page (or in the column, if you use them) where they could start, but on/in the next one.This is a known limitation due to the complicated calculation of remaining space on the page." Is this still an error in TABLE, or is there a fix? --Joel

As far as I understood (and ConTeXt behaved like that last time I used this feature) the separator command replaces the repeated line number. It should not be used as an stopper (or to mark the separation with next line). Could anyone be so kind to confirm that this is unintended and that I’m not missing anything? mathmatrix: Aligning row baseline to text baseline

Greetings, This is little more than a pet peeve of mine, but the `location=normal` option for `mathmatrix` has the matrix's center row baseline misaligned with the baseline of the math around. The severity of the misalignment seems to correlate with interline space settings — more space, worse the misalignment. Is it possible to align the baselines? I've been spoiled by LaTeX's `tabularray` package — it has an undocumented value for its `baseline` key. Setting it to `M` does exactly what I want. footnotes with separate lines

I am wondering if there is a solution to the problem I have just encountered. I have a footnote that requires separate lines. I have achieved that in a straightforward case as follows: \footnote{1770 – the discovery\\ 1778 – the invasion\\ 1824 – the war of extermination\\ 1901 – the Constitution} That works, but if I add \setupinteraction[state=start] to the file it does not. That particular footnote causes the compilation to go into an endless loop. All other footnotes are ok. I tried replacing the \\ with \crlf but that has the same result. I tried \start...\stoplines in the hope that this might work inside a footnote, but it doesn't. Of course, I do not understand what is happening between 'interaction' and what I am doing with this particular footnote, but clearly it is problematic. Any way I can get my separate lines and still have interaction working in that file? Julian

The first line shows different versions text. I wonder whether there would be an automatic way to get the \inframed highlighting with any character that differs from the other column (it might be different, or just missing or being added). Problem with JPEG2000 inclusion in 2025.02.28 update

I use JPEG2000 images and, unit the most recent update, these worked fine for me (i.e., anywhere a "normal" JPEG could be included, a JPEG2000 could be included). This seems to have come to a crashing halt with the 2025.02.28 update. Now I just get the gray box. Here is an example of it not working (I have attached a .JP2 image of ConTeXt's favourite cow): %%%% begin here \setupexternalfigures[location={local,default}] \starttext \line{% \externalfigure[cow.pdf][height=1in]% \hss \externalfigure[cow-jp2.jp2][height=1in]} \stoptext %%%% end here I get the same problem with .JPX (JPEG2000 Part 2) images (which are the ones I really want to use). This is a show-stopper for the document I produce. Can anyone suggest either (a) a workaround so that I can include JPEG2000 images (aside from converting them to JPEGs and including those), or (b) tell me how I can revert to the previous version of ConTeXt? (Unfortunately, my web search for installing an older version is polluted by mostly non-ConTeXt uses of the word "context".) Thanks. Jim

Dear list, first of all, sorry for not providing a MWE, but it is really hard in this case. To enjoy the new added abilities for parallel texts in ConTeXt, I’m making a six-language version of an ancient Greek text. Columns setup (using landscape A4), so there are two pages: \definecolumnset [parallel] [n=3, align={lesswidows,lessclubs,lessbroken,lessorphans}, ] All works fine, but I have a single passage that has problems. It’s a chapter with title and two lines of text (in original Greek) and title and three/four lines of translation. Chapter setup reads (for the relevant parts): \setuphead[chapter] [before={\blank[none, preference]\testcolumn[5]}, after={\blank[none, samepage]}] Well, the problem is that only the Greek text appears at the end of the first page (no translation is shown at the end of the first or second page), and all translations appear at the beginning of the third and fourth page (no Greek text at the beginning of the third page). How can I make that ConTeXt prioritizes leaving one (or two) orphan line(s), but flushes that Greek text and the five translations? Many thanks for your help, Pablo

How to span an image across two pages with a caption?

I am trying to do this, basically my document has some floats, with captions, that appear within the text, but occasionally, I want some special images to be rendered across the full page (left and right). The text of the chapter should appear on the pages before this and after it, but not on the page with these images. And the page number/headings shouldn't appear. Ideally the caption just is displayed bottom left, on the left-side / verso page. Is there a simple way to achieve that? Can context automatically italicize foreign words?

Its common convention to italicize words that are of a different language. I've tried marking these words, but then when they also appear in the glossary and index, they are not appearing in the correct placement--somehow the italicized words appear under the "s" category, no matter what letter they start with. Is there any way in ConTeXt to just give it a list of words, and it will italicize them wherever they are found in the text, no matter they are in the body, some index, etc.? --Joel
