Unicode symbols in math mode

I was wondering if it would be easy to add UTF-8 transformations of symbols like ≥ to \geq in math mode, much like “ and ” are transformed to `` and '' (atleast I assume this to be true, as it works for me). prevent hyphenation

Hi. I'm typesetting a text with some citations in nineteenth-century Dutch and French, in which I don't want hyphenation. How can this be done? I now have two macros: \def\stophyph{\pretolerance=15000\tolerance=400} \def\starthyph{\pretolerance=200\tolerance=400} At the beginning of every citation I enter \stophyph{} and at the end \starthyph{}. But the cited words are still hyphenated. Putting single words in a mbox also doesn't help... ;( Tanks in advance, Peter van Kranenburg

presentations: "page number" and "next page"

Hello, Shortly: I would like modify the meaning of "previous/next page" buttons in interaction menu to point to the previous/next slide instead on the previous/next physical page. And I would like to number pages according to slides instead of considering physical pages. *********************************************************************** And here's a more detailed description: I use the "rsteps" module (by David Munger) for my presentation. I also use the interaction menu: \startinteractionmenu[bottom] ... \but [nextpage] \symbol[nextpage] \\ \but [lastpage] \symbol[lastpage] \\ ... \but [CloseDocument] \symbol[CloseDocument] \\ \stopinteractionmenu Instead of \but [previouspage] \symbol[previouspage] \\ \but [nextpage] \symbol[nextpage] \\ pointing on the previous and next slide, I would like these two buttons to have slightly different functionality: pointing to the LAST step of the previous/next slide. Apart from that, I would like to keep the page number on different steps of the same slide. I would use this number to print it in footer and to call it from Metafun (PageNumber, NOfPages or a similar name, as in meta-ini.tex). Here's the idea of how the presentation should look like. In the table below there's a: - real page number (in pdf document), - slide number (= same content gradually growing), - step on slide, - page number as it should be printed in footer and made accessible to metapost if needed, - real page number where the "Previous" button should point to, - real page number where the "Next" button should point to 1 - titlepage 2 - slide 1, step 1 - page 1 - < [titlepage] > 3 3 - slide 1, step 2 - page 1 - < [titlepage] > 6 4 - slide 2, step 1 - page 2 - < 3 > 6 5 - slide 2, step 2 - page 2 - < 3 > 6 6 - slide 2, step 3 - page 2 - < 3 > 7 7 - slide 3, step 1 - page 3 - < 6 > 10 8 - slide 4, step 1 - page 4 - < 7 > 10 9 - slide 4, step 2 - page 4 - < 7 > 10 0 - slide 4, step 3 - page 4 - < 7 > [none/self] I'm interested in the result on the first place, not so much on the mechanism that would "automatically recognize a new page and place everything as desired", so I don't mind if I have to (type)set anything manually. lost position information with metafun registers

Dear ConTeXt users (and developers), I am very fond of the presentation capabilites of ConTeXt, especially in connection with the Metafun macros. A big hand for the ConTeXt team! Now I want to link some checkboxes to a MPgraphic (a fieldstack actually) and I thought, that the best approach would be via the layer mechanism described in section 5.4 of the Metafun manual. I got the background picture and the checkboxes, but unfortunately the checkboxes were not in the intended positions (saved in register macros) but rather in the top left corner of the image. Metapost animation

Good evening. First of all I want to thank to Mr. Hagen for his last answer. I will check your last code of balanced columnsets at home (with the newest ConTeXt). As for your correcting code for ordinary collumns, I have tried it with three different types of my documents, and it worked well. Maybe this is the final solution of the problem. I will try it with more documents and let you know, anyway. Now to my next question. I have seen a great thing: Metapost pictures were animated (probably with the JavaScript code). You can found some examples here: http://www.math.muni.cz/~plch/nkpm/nradanm6.pdf http://www.math.muni.cz/~plch/nkpm/nradanm8.pdf (Just click on the `Spustit animaci' button.) Is it possible to do it simply in the ConTeXt? Of course I may break down the mechanism of widgets and write my own JavaScript (I don't know how to do timing), but isn't there some special macro for animating series of figures? It would be great. If so, is Acrobat Reader fast enough to simulate this way the nice feature of MS PowerPoint---curves and shapes that are drawn by pieces, or that appear somewhere and then go to its final location? (This is quite instructive in economics, because you can easily notice which curve is drawn first, what second, and so on.) How can I do it? With many greetings and thanks Michal Kvasnicka

encircled characters

Hi! Is there a way to use encircled characters in context? Similar to the Copyright-Symbol, but with selfdefined characters or numbers. I was trying to use metapost for the job, but I wasn't able to get the "circleit" function to work. Best Regards Michael

Just to add a slightly different flavour, I have been using PdfLatex for several years to produce technical manuals for various pieces of software, which have included a lot of graphics and tables. I have recently changed to ConText mainly because it is far easier to set up how you want the text to be displayed and you don't need to include lots of additional packages which often have side effects with each other and need to be included in the correct order. I have also found it very easy to modify Latex input to Context input and particularly like the separation possible with graphics (whereby you can have a separate file that points to the graphics file and not have to embed the file name in the middle of the document) It would be nice if this list could produce some "good" layouts for others to use to provide us all with some defaults and a starting point rather than everyone reinventing the wheel.
