While I'm thinking about it, here are a couple more things from LaTeX's math stuff that might be useful to include in m-newmat: The \stackrel command is listed as "a disguise for plain TeX's \buildrel", much like \frac is a "disguise" for \over: \def\stackrel#1#2{\mathrel{\mathop{#2}\limits^{#1}}} There's also the \lefteqn command: \def\lefteqn#1{\rlap{$\displaystyle #1$}} The \lefteqn command is useful for doing partly-aligned equations, of the sort that get displayed as: long left-hand-side = long right-hand-side part 1 + long right-hand-side part 2 + long right-hand-side part 3 Essentially, you'd write that in an eqalign (or something like it), as: \placeformula \startformula \eqalign{% \lefteqn{long left-hand-side}\qquad & \cr &= long right-hand-side part 1 \cr &\quad {}+ long right-hand-side part 2 \cr &\quad {}+ long right-hand-side part 3 \cr } \stopformula As can be seen, \lefteqn lets the long left-hand-side overlap the alignment point, without shifting it excessively to the right. It's not perfect -- for one thing, if the left-hand-side extends farther to the right than the right-hand-sides, the equation won't be centered -- but it's a good start and works right most of the time. :) - Brooks

Adding webpage to the bibliography entries

Hello, (mostly) Taco, I don't know what the whole functionality of the urlbst (CTAN/biblio/bibtex/contrib/urlbst/) package is, but it offers an entity @webpage for bibiliography style, with url, author, title, year, lastchecked and note. I think it also adds a field url to every(?) other entity. It would be great to be able to use something like \cite[url][our nice garden], which would be equivalent to something like \useURL[bib:our nice garden][http://contextgarden.net][][http://contextgarden.net] \from[bib:our nice garden] and also add URLs to the list of publications (if requested) at the end of the file. Support would probably only make sense in the ConTeXt-wrapped bibliographies (actually is url often already present in usual bib files). Perhaps some other users have some more comments/suggestions about it. Mojca

In the context of bibligraphies, I have been looking at two topics that were the subject of presentations at one of the last TUG meetings, namely, Bibulus MLBibTeX Bibulus interests me because it creates bibliographies directly in XML. MLBibTeX interests me because of its extended encoding (it is billed as "European style bibliography"). In either case, at this time they are for developers only: neither is ready for prime time use (though you can download packages and "play" with them). On the other hand, they seem to be getting *very* close to prime time readiness. Conclusion: if ConTeXt is going to undertake some work concerning "the bibliography", it might be a good idea to consider how that work might tie in with Bibulus or MLBibTeX, or both. This said as an after thought to what Mojca said. Best, elena

Thanks, Matthias and Hans, for the tip about \page[+2]. I have not yet studied a ConTeXt presentation (read, "slides") macros, so it may well be that that use is very practical. (In any of the slides packages I know in LaTeX, it certainly would be.) As for Hans's suggestion, that it might be used to "create two empty pages", say again I think it's great - it would be better yet if the functionality \page[-2] existed to erase the last two pages, say ;-) Thanks again, elena

Regimes to be supported; Comments?

Hello, Some time ago there was a discussion about extending support for different regimes in ConTeXt. The list of (to-be-)supported regimes probably depends strongly on the implementation (ruby+iconv?). I collected a preliminary list of candidate regimes and possible synonyms (some synonyms are listed there for backward compatibility and have to remain there), leaving out most of eastern encodings (not because they shouldn't be on the list, but because I'm completely ignorant about that). Hans suggested to post this to the mailing list first to get some useful comments and suggestions. ##### The following question should probably go in a separate thread, but it's a very similar thematic. In July 2006 Ljubljana will host people from around 85 coutries of the world. One of the very ambitious organizers is dreaming for already a couple of years to print the participant names (on honourable mentions for example, ...) in both latinic transcription and as they are written in original (under an assumption that the names are properly entered in a UTF-8 database). This is probably not possible to do for every single obscure language, but does it in general sound like: a) Good luck (I don't want to be on your place)! b) Take a good (commercial) program c) If you're ready to invest the rest of your time (forget about hobbies!), it's probably doable in LaTeX or ConTeXt until then č) Forget about TeX - it will be possible to solve this problem one day with unicode & one of the new TeX engines. But until then, it's not worth the effort, because any effort you may invest will become obsolete in a couple of years. I saw \hbox, \vbox, \vtop, \lbox, \cbox, \rbox, \sbox, \tbox, \bbox on page 106 of cont-eni.pdf. But if I understand it properly, there's no alternative to LaTeX \parbox command. 1.1.) After grep-ing the LaTeX tree for "\parbox", my disk ran out of space 1.2.) \bTABLE ... \eTABLE seems too complicated to me to be used for such a simple thing as asking for a paragraph of a certain width, centered with regard to the current line. So would it be possible to implement \parbox in ConTeXt (or if someone can point me to an already existing command). The LaTeX definition is in tex\latex\base\latex.ltx, line 4692 (at least in my version). It does not have to have the same syntax, but at least the basic functionality. I also often need some stuff to be centered vertically, for example [big image] ----> some arrows and text ----> [big image] I use \bTABLE ... \eTABLE or \vcenter for that, but it's not the most perfect way of doing it. 2.) Is there any *neutral* version of a \framed command? To explain what I want to achive, an example is probably most illustrative: \starttext Hasselt $\displaystyle{\rm is: \matrix{\rm nice\cr\rm sunny\cr\rm domestic}}$, but the houses there \framed{$\displaystyle{\rm are: \matrix{\rm too\ high\cr\rm too\ bricky}}$} \stoptext Thank you, Mojca

background of a table and fillinlines

One week there are more items and one week the are less items. Now to my problem. I want to have this graphic in the back of the table. Always in the middle of the table. The width of the table is always the same. I can place the background but I shouldn't have a absolute position. The position should vary concerning to the height of the table. Is this possible? I've found nothing in the PDF's to this problem. Another thing are fillinrules: can I define the look of the line? Now it is always a line, but I want a thinner line or points. Like I can define in \setupunderbar but in \setupfillinrules I did't find this option. Hope somebody can help... Big thanks Greetings Jessica

Dear All: This is like going to school: every evening I study a very narrow topic in ConTeXt, the idea being "Si va piano, si va lontano" ("go slow and you'll get far"). So last night I was to study cross-references, and that was simple enough EXCEPT... I could not come up with a practical application for \page[+2] or \page[-2]. I understand the concept (I think): it is two pages ahead, or two pages back, relative to the current page. But could anyone tell me in what context (sorry for the pun) would that be used? I must be missing something. How could I possibly know what's on page "current + 2" or "current - 2" unless I compile, in which case the notation would be equivalent to inserting cross-references manually? As I said, I am missing something, but what. Thanks in advance, elena

custom itemize bullet

But I can't figure out how to use that bullet in an itemized list. I don't think I can use \usesymbols because in some lists I want the regular bullet, and in others I want the custom bullet.
