figures: side by side and/or one above the other

Hello, I'm using context for an document with many figures. In some cases I have figures that should appear side by side and/or one above the other – but without combining them (\startcombination... \stopcombination). This I want to avoid because I'd like to give them a plain caption (like non-combined images) and because I would not like putting not directly related figures in a combination. In addition, when placed [left], combinations somehow center all sub-captions, though for single images they are left-aligned. (see http://pastebin.com/tZiNuekZ) Here is what I tried (and what went wron on the way) A) one above the other – so that I have the images on the left side of the page, while the text is on the right. I tried to archive this using the attribute [left]. The text floats aside of the one bottom image (someimage2), but not aside the one above it (someimage1). This code produces a working example: \starttext \placefigure [left] {caption} {\externalfigure[someimage1][width=0.5\textwidth]} \placefigure [left][fig:newton] {caption} {\externalfigure[someimage2][width=0.5\textwidth]} \input tufte \stoptext B) side by side I tried to work with columns here, but i was not successful. The figures often went not together and when a setup worked, the text did not continue to flow after the images but was starting on the next page. I hope there is a more robust solution out there. I would be grateful if somebody could point me in the right direction for solving these issues. Regards, Jan

Adding command pages to the wiki

Hi all, When some command is mentioned on this mailing list, and people say "somebody might want to add this information to the wiki", and the command page doesn't even *exist* yet — don't despair. Creating it is easy, now. * There's a proper copy-paste skeleton for new command pages, now; you can copy it and fill in what you need with a minimum of fuss. It lives at http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Help:Command_reference. * Help:Command_reference is now linked from the [[Category:Commands]] page, so it should be easy to find when you need it. * No more interleaving your prose with <code> and <tt> tags: {{cmd|defineparagraphs|[LeftRight]}} produces a linkified and typewriter-fonted \defineparagraphs[LeftRight]. * Link to up-to-date versions of source files with {{src|m-ipsum.mkiv}}. This links to the repository at http://repo.or.cz/w/context.git. * Mark code with {{code|...}} instead of <code>...</code>. It codes the same thing, but it's easier to type. (And easier to recode what it encodes. Code code code.) Speaking of the command reference: if you click on http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Category:Commands, you'll see that there are only 100 commands left to categorize. Some help would really be appreciated at this stage. Just open two or three commands in tabs, and change [[Category:Commands|mycommand]] to [[Category:Command/SubCategory|mycommand]]; you can see the list of subcategories at the top of the Category:Commands page. advice 4 math font

Hi there, I have a rather general question regarding the options for math fonts in ConTeXt. As I understand from reading older posts to this list, there are currently efforts for making either pagella math or an updated modern font available. I am looking into this for quite some time now, but did not find a solution of my liking. I am currently using \setupbodyfont[modern-designsize] However, I like the rendering of latex's mathpazo a lot better, since in modern design the math font does not match the modern text font. Plain pagella currently is no option, since (i) fraktur is not supported (see P.S.) (ii) I am not happy with px math (integrals…) Another option would to use tex gyre pagella math (which is different from the currently available \setupbodyfong[pagella], right?!): ftp://ftp.mpi-sb.mpg.de/pub/tex/mirror/ftp.dante.de/pub/tex/fonts/tex-gyre-math/doc/presentation-tg_pagella_math.pdf As I understand I'd have to put the tff / otf files into a folder that is recognized by ConTeXt (right?!). However, downloading the zip from here: http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/fonts/tex-gyre-math gives me only the "regular" fonts (i.e. there is no math - or am I missing something?!) Are there any other options, is there someone listening, who was able to mimic mathpazo (I know about math times, but there's money envolved, which I'd rather like to not spend) and could provide me with a solution or are there other options, which I have overseen? I have had a look at the descriptions about handling fonts in the manual(s), but I did not really get into it. I'd have to come up with a solution of my liking in a couple of months (deadline). Your help is very much appreciated. Sorry for bringing this up, especially since it is a stupid discussion about taste, but I spend too much time on this and am quite sure that someone out there must have a solution to these problems or at least point me into the right direction... columns in latest beta

I was writing a reply to Dalyoung, but Wolfgang beat me to it. So I'm going to ask a question myself: I'm a bit desperate about columns. I want nothing fancy, just a simple two-columns layout for a few pages. Unfortunately, the two betas I have on my computer both have trouble. 2012-06-30 complains about \column: "undefined control sequence." 2012-07-19 throws an error which I've never seen before: system > tex > error on line 901 in file reader.tex: Bad register code ... That's the line where I have \stopcolumns. The full error is this: \page_mul_flush_preceding_ongrid ...ceding_height -\dp \d_page_mul_preceding... \page_mul_flush_packaged_columns_indeed ...ongrid \else \page_mul_flush_prec... \page_mul_flush_packaged_columns_continued ...eed \box \columnpagebox \egroup \page_mul_routine_continue ...d_columns_continued }\page_otr_construct_and_s... \page_otr_command_routine ...mul_routine_continue \or \page_mul_routine_bala... \page_otr_triggered_output_routine ...and_routine \fi What does this "bad register code" mean? I don't even know where to begin to look for an error - there is one \start - \stopcolumns environment earlier in my document, which does appear to work normally. Any pointers? Thomas

Dear Woldgang and Marco, Thank you for your correction. It works after bracing the \externalfigure command. Now, I have to modify the numbers of header, footer, etc to make my style. I also change the order of "\setupexternalfigure[directory=...]" and "\usemodule[simpleslides]..." to apply the relational position. Now, I don't have to keep two mode "my own" and "simple slides". Instead, I just use "simpleslides-s-myown". Thank you again. Best regards, Dalyoung

Dear Thomas, I tested making my simpleslides module "SsuWave" by modifying "simpleslides-s-Rounded.tex" (1) I just replaced MP figures for horizontal and title with some figures as follows for test : \defineoverlay [simpleslides:background:horizontal] % [\useMPgraphic{simpleslides:MP:horizontal}] [\externalfigure[/Users/graph/Documents/figures/background/ssuwave1][]] \defineoverlay [simpleslides:background:title] % [\useMPgraphic{simpleslides:MP:title}] [\externalfigure[/Users/graph/Documents/figures/background/ssuwave][]] But it does not work. I got error as follows: ! Argument of \douseexternalfigure has an extra }. ..... 22 \stopitemize 23 24 >> \SlideTitle{벡터의 연산 } 25 .... <inserted text> \par <to be read again> } \pack_layers_set ...group \edef \currentlayer {#1} \edef \p_pack_layers_state... <to be read again> { \61>simpleslides:background:horizontal ...uwave1]{ \executedefinedoverlay {si... \pack_framed_process_background_indeed_external ... \else \kern -\framedbackgr... ... (2) In the log file, I checked that it was read during the process. mkiv lua stats > loaded tex modules - 6 requested, 6 found (*-animation *-simpleslides *-simpleslides-s-SsuWave *-units simpleslides-f-default simpleslides-s-default), 0 missing ... Hi, Mu current chapter setup is as below: \def\HeadTitle#1#2% {\hbox to \hsize \bgroup \hfill \setupframed[offset=.5em,frame=off] \tbox{\framed[width=3cm,align=left]{#1}}% \tbox{\framed[width=4cm,align=right,leftframe=on]{#2}}% \egroup} \setuphead [chapter] [color=green1, textstyle=, align=normal, continue=no, page=right, style=\tfc, before={\blank[2*big]}, after={\blank[2*big]}, command=\HeadTitle] I want a local TOC after each chapter title. Dear Hans and Thomas, Thank you for the reply. First, I tried \setupbackgrounds [page] [background=yellow-spring, state=repeat] but, there is no change. After the change "page" to "text", my figure appears but it covers slide title. I couldn't test \setupbackgrounds [page] [background={yellow-spring,exist-thing}, state=repeat] yet. As you said, I think that the best way to use my own figure as a background in SimpleSlide is to make my own slide template. I found "simpleslides-template.tex" and I may try to modify it to make a style file. I hope that I can do it using other samples. Thank you again. Best regards, Dalyoung
