For the Mac users: AppleScript to launch ConTeXt in a flexile way

Hello, Some months ago I wrote a little AppleScript script with one purpose: It should be a flexible script to launch ConTeXt typesetting, independently of the text editor I’m using and it should be capable to typeset the Product file even if I’m currently editing any component file belonging to that Product file. I used it for some time, I improved it, and I shared it with a collegue who also works with ConText on OSX. We’re still using it, many bugs have been fixed and some features were added. The script proved to be very useful for us and I thought, why not share it with the other Mac-ConTeXt people? So here it is: https://www.wuala.com/tflo/Scripts/Ctx%20Typeset/?key=75QkpizhdpFS As already said, the main purpose of the script is to launch the Ctx typesetting process (short: Ctx) on a file. Regarding the “a file” the script is very configurable and flexible: A) It can launch Ctx on a file currently opened in your text editor. It works with many text editors (BBEdit, MacVim, TextMate, etc.) as long as the editor is the frontmost process. B) It can launch Ctx on the parent Product file of the component file currently being edited. Defining a “Product file” can either be done semi-automatically or by hard-definition with two swappable register slots. C) If no eligible file is opend in an editor it will launch Ctx on the currently selected tex file in the Finder. The options added in the course of time are: A) Usage of a ConTeXt-Beta or a ConTeXt-Current installation, swappable B) Typesetting in the non-interactive shell or in the visible terminal C) Notifications D) Selection of PDF viewer (Skim, Preview, Adobe, …) E) Automatically calling the PDF viewer or not F) Optionally excluding generated PDFs from TM backup G) luatex or luajitex H) Beeps or no beeps, and so on I) Many other things, explained in the Description Also some features (“Tools”) have been added: A) Purging files including generated PDFs B) Info on the used Ctx version C) Updating the Ctx Minimal (Beta or/and Current) and archiving the old one D) Syntax Check E) Make formats, listing fonts, other, … F) Some extras added in the Extras folder (synctex with BBEdit etc.) G) Much more in the Description Some caveats: A) It works only on OS X B) The script is designed to work with 10.9 (Mavericks). It should also work with 10.8 (old notification via 3rdParty is still implemented). C) Out of the box it works only with the so called “ConTeXt Minimal Installation” (aka ConTeXt Standalone). It won’t work with TeXLive installations or any other kind of excessively screwed-up installations. But you can go into the script to make it work with anything. D) In order to get access to any text editor the script makes use of GUI scripting: you have to liberate the rights in the corresponding OS preferences. This may sound risky to you but the code is open so you can assure yourself of what the script does. E) You have to (and you really should!) read the Description that comes with the script. SOLVED: too many open files

Hi again, in my current songbook project I use t-filter with LilyPond as shown in http://wiki.contextgarden.net/LilyPond with latest beta MkIV on OSX. Every line (system) of notes is included as its own PDF to leave the page breaking to ConTeXt. But since I have some hundred songs with each a few lines, it sums up... I don't understand if the error is really from LilyPond or from LuaTeX (I guess the former), and how I would be able to increase the number of possible files (in bash on OSX 10.8.4). So probably it's more a general Unix question than a ConTeXt one, but anyway... ANALYSIS: $ ulimit -n 256 $ sysctl kern.maxfiles kern.maxfiles: 12288 $ sysctl kern.maxfilesperproc kern.maxfilesperproc: 10240 SOLUTION: $ ulimit -S -n 2048 (Properly describing a problem often helps to solve it. LuaTeX finds font, mtxrun --fonts does not list it?

I'm trying to add a ttf font (Futura) so I can use it in ConTeXt. I've ran mtxrun --script fonts --list --all |less looked at a ttf font that was there, copied my Futura ttfs to the same directory it was in, and ran mtxrun --script fonts --reload --force But I still can't find it in mtxrun --script fonts --list --all |less nor can I use it in ConTeXt. (The filenames don't have spaces.) The curious thing is that the luatex cache has it. It's listed in /home/sandra/.texmf-var/luatex-cache/generic/names/luaotfload-names.luc under various names, all starting with "futuralt". Curiously, /home/sandra/.texmf-var/luatex-cache/context/[number]/fonts/otf/futuralt-book.tm[ac] exist. But the only "book-" related name in luaotfload-names.luc is futuraltbook, not futuralt-book. Neither worked in ConTeXt, though. How do I move forward with this, how do I add ttfs so that ConTeXt understand them? Sandra

extended printing options in ConTeXt

Hans, would it be possible to implement two extended printing options defined in the PDF specification? You have kindly implemented duplex printing and page scaling options. At my workplace, we are it on a daily basis for mail merging (I had to make an “extension” to distinguish between duplex printing and page scaling [it isn’t an option for me]). In the present implementation, page, portrait and landscape values sets page scaling to none. In most of the documents we generate, we have to fit page contents to printer margins. It is a must for us, since corporate templates are the way they are (wrong designed). Would it be possible to have the PDF printing options in different keys than the one used for the the viewing options? It would be also extremely useful to be able to specify the number of copies and select page size from PDF document. These are the keys /NumCopies and /PickTrayByPDFSize (described on page 365 from the PDF specification). The keys and their values would be: duplex page portrait landscape (only a duplex key required) fixed (no value is required) copies number pdfsize yes no This way, the user has only to press the OK button in the printing dialog or enter (and forget about selecting which kind of document requires which options). I’m asking this for my own needs (it is essential for us at work, where none knows what ConTeXt might be). But this implementation benefits any ConTeXt user. Adjusting Kerning/Spacing between Letter

Hi, I am trying to typeset some strings in {\tt ...}, but they turn out to be pretty wide. So, I would like to compress those bits of text a little. Any hints on how I could do that locally, that is without adjusting the entire font. Thank you, Malte.

Support for Optional Content Groups

I am new to ConTeXt (coming from LaTeX), and am really impressed. Great work! I am working on a document that has layers that I want to be screen-only, similar in approach to this: http://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/167846/implementing-full-page-screen… I am assuming that Optional Content Groups would be the best way to do this. How would I set something up like this in ConTeXt/LuaTeX? I know I could make a screen-only version and a print version of the output pdf, but I want to have my cake and eat it too ;) Thanks in advance, Chris Chapman

Hi, (mostly for Thomas) In the next beta: When you include files in another file (using xmlinclude) we now register what gets included. There are two new commands: \xmlinclusion{#1} : the current inclusion \xmlinclusions{#1} : a list of inclusions the first one backtracks till it find a name and the second one will locate the root if needed. This option can be handy for tracing (i.e. seeing where input comes from). Another addition is that \definemode[something][keep] define an undefined mode; the keep makes sure that the already set value is kept (another option is 'yes'). Using defined modes (that is, set with: \enabledmode, \disablemode or \definemode) can be tested about twice as fast as undefined modes which can make a small difference when modes are tested lots of times. I was browsing docs in the contextgarden but not sure what is available for handling bibliography in ConTeXt today? Afaict, RefTeX is for LaTeX only, I recall there was(is). (My dev environment is Debian Linux/Emacs/AUCTeX.) Sincerely, Gour -- Whatever action a great man performs, common men follow. And whatever standards he sets by exemplary acts, all the world pursues.
