Making sure figures are placed within articles

Hello, I usually place figures in the end of the subsection, using the code: \placefigure [middle]{none}{\externalfigure[filyashkin-1.png][width=0.87\textwidth]} Quite often the figure does not fit the page, and is moved to the next one. Ocassionally, another subsection may start at the beginning of next page, so that my figure is placed inside wrong article. Can I setup \placefigure to move non-fitting figures not only forth, but also back within the subsection? In another words, to can I set up the criterium: place the figure no matter where, but inside the current subsection? Otherwise, it needs many manual corrections and re-compilations to get all figures within corresponding articles. I'd doing my first serious work with ConTeXt, so help me please. Best, Vyatcheslav

updating ConTeXt (MacTeX)

In order to be able to use MkIV and Luatex I started, as a MacTeX-user, by updating ConTeXt (*MacTeX*<http://wiki.contextgarden.net/index.php?title=MacTeX&action=edit&redlink=1>: You need to update<http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Running_Mark_IV#Updating_ConTeXt>ConTeXt first.), following instructions on http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Running_Mark_IV#Updating_ConTeXt The command as given (copied and pasted in terminal) does not work: everything fails: Operation not permitted. Redoing it as Sudo does the job. But then: “luatools --generate” gives: -bash: /usr/texbin/luatools: Permission denied, “sudo luatools --generate” gives “luatools: command not found”. So I cd-ed to /usr/texbin, gave the command “sudo chmod 755 luatools” and then “luatools --generate” and got: LuaTools | error unable to identify cnf file LuaTools | no cnf files found (TEXMFCNF may not be set/known) LuaTools | LuaTools | runtime: 0.002 seconds But worst of all is that after all this I could not use MkII any more: Older files that before updating had been nicely typeset couldn’t be processed anymore: permission denied. I tried “sudo chmod 755” on texexec and on texmfstart but that did not help. So in the end I reinstalled MacTeX 2008 and I was back at where I started. The least one can say is that the updating instructions on contextgarden do not work in all circumstances. In all fairness, everybody is warned: “Note that this is a quick-and-dirty way to upgrade TL. Use at your own risk. One should be able to update in a more elegant way.” But now what? Lots of MacTeX-users must have successfully updated ConTeXt. Can anybody disclose a more elegant way that worked for them? Especially one that does not render the existing ConTeXt useless by meddling with permissions. Just for the sake of completeness, I use an Intel iMac under OSX 10.5.6. latext beta + xetex

Hi all, there's a bug somewhere in the latest beta when using it with XeTeX (which I normally don't use, but I have a stubborn pdf file which luatex refuses to embed...). Simple testfile \starttext Hello world \stoptext produces a spurious "sss" in the output. All best Thomas

substitutions

Dear gang, Sometimes I use the following for simple substitutions: \defineactivecharacter ' {\otfchar{quoteright}} But is there a more general mechanism to do things \definesubstitution{<string1>}{<string2>} eg \definesubstitution{--}{–} Of course ConTeXt already provides this particular substitution but I'm interested in such a mechanism for more general purposes. updating context

today, by looking at http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Running_Mark_IV and following instructions, after updating context and luatex binary in opensuse 11.1, if I run luatools --generate in the terminal as both a root user or a normal user, it will not work and I get bash: /usr/local/bin/luatools: Permission denied Does exist a solution for this?

\startlines in mark IV

Hi, I setup this test: %%%%%%%%%%%%%%% \starttext \startlines \input test.tex \stoplines \stoptext %%%%%%%%%%%%%%% File 'test.tex' contains just a 'Hello world!' line. This test goes okay when I use 'texexec' from default Ubuntu package. When I use 'context' from minimals, I get a message that ends with: ! Undefined control sequence. l.3 \input test.tex If I remove lines '\startlines' and \stoplines' from the test, I get no errors. What did I do wrong? Did '\startlines' changed in Mark IV? Linebreak in Metapost/Metafun Label

Hi, Is it possible to break labels in two lines if needed? For example, suppose I have label.rt(textext("Do you see this label text. Quite long. Need to break it across lines"),(3,5)); Can I have it appear in the figure as Do you see this label text. Quite long. Need to break it across lines. Thank you in advance for your help.
