Determing if the argument is one character or not

Hi, I want to write a macro which behaves differently depending on whether its argumet is a single character or not. \MACRO[a] should give $X_{a}$ \MACRO[a:b] should give $X_{[a:b]}$ Any hints on how to do this? Thanks, Aditya

footnote inside footnote

How to get a second level footnote that is typeset with it own numbering, some thing like: Main text body[1] has two footnotes[2]. ------ 1. First level footnote[1] 2. Another one ------ 1. I often find myself amazed at the speed at which ConTeXt develops and very much look forward to the end of font voodoo as promised by MKIV.

Error with TrueType flavor OpenType fonts with .otf extension

I came across an OpenType font with TrueType outline that had an .otf extension, attempting to use it gave me this error: !luaTeX error (file /home/khaled/.fonts/UthmanTN1_Ver06.otf): can't find table `CFF ' ==> Fatal error occurred, no output PDF file produced! Reading OpenType specification, I see that it allows this: * In all cases, fonts with only CFF data (no TrueType outlines) always have an .OTF extension. * Fonts containing TrueType outlines may have either .OTF or .TTF, depending on the desire for backward compatibility on older systems or with previous versions of the font. TrueType Collection fonts should have a .TTC extension whether or not the fonts have OpenType layout tables present. I'm not sure if this is a LuaTeX of ConTeXt issue, but my guess is that a ConTeXt issue, thus reported here. Regards, Khaled -- Khaled Hosny Arabic localizer and member of Arabeyes.org team

Page number not updating in layer

I am trying to use a layer to insert a page number in my document, but the page always displays page number 1. It seems nothing that I have tried has worked. I also don't know how to exclude the first page from the total number of pages count. unwanted rgb-->gray conversion (mkiv)

Hi Hans, The attached example works fine with mkii (text and gfx both use RGB colors). Using mkiv reduces the colorspace of the graphic to GRAY. Sadly PDFX/-4 doesn't allow to mix color profiles of colorspace RGB with GRAY ones. So I'm forced to always use the RGB colorspace... Any ConTeXt user with ancient linux distribution?

Hello, The new server on contextgarden.net has a newer linux distribution and 64-bit kernel. I used to compile the linux binaries on the server since they worked everywhere, also on newer machines (I once wrote a note "compiled with glibc 2.3.6" and maybe the kernel was 2.4.something; it was debian etch). The vice versa doesn't hold - if we compile the binaries on some newer machine, they won't work on older linuxes. So I have two questions: - Are there still users with old linux distributions using the minimals? - And if yes - any volunteer to compile the binaries on regular basis? (The releases of new luatex are the most critical ones. Other binaries can usually wait longer.) You may write me off-list. Mojca
