relative file locations when compiling from different folders (in projects)

Hello, I'm just wondering if there's some recipe about how to simplify the work when icluding other files and images in projects, when one is compiling from different folders. For example: articles/08/01/art-one.tex (product) articles/08/01/art-two.tex (product) articles/08/02/art-three.tex (product) articles/08/02/art-four.tex (product) articles/08/magazine_2008.tex (product) components/funny.tex (component) img/08/01/img-1.png img/08/01/img-2.png img/08/01/img-3.png img/08/02/img-2.png magazine_all.tex (project) layout.tex (environment) If I do > cd articles/08/01 > texexec art-one then images are expected to be set up as ../../../img/08/01 and if I need to \input somefile from the project (like "funny.tex"), even if that's a component, I need to provide some explicit location. But then I would want to compile > cd articles/08 > texexec magazine_2008 and then all relative paths break, even when specified in subfolders. Now I would need to set up ../../img/08/01 as image directory. Even though the article provides relative path, that path is now relative to the document I compile one folder lower in hierarchy, not to the document that defines the relative path (which is a bit weird, but I understad why it is so). Also ... is there some elegant way to include "funny.tex" from an article, so that it will work both in article and magazine? (I'm thinking about putting \def\projectroot{../../} at the top of files, but that's a bit ugly.) I can solve the problem in my own ways with some weird macros, like the ones that set image directory to "directory={../../../img/08/01,../../img/08/01,img/08/01}" at the top of every article file, but my solutions are all a bit ugly. (Another thing is that it needs to be flexible enough, so that I don't need to change every single article in case that I decide to move images or articles to another location in project.) If some elegance exists to solve that, I would welcome any hints or suggestions. But as I said: it's all solvable in one way or another, so this is just a low-priority request for sharing your ideas. I'm posting this because I would almost bet that there's some one-liner to solve it all :) :) :) Thanks, Mojca

showcase on mac?

Willi Egger helped me get a minimal install working on my mac and I'm working on a collection of columns illustrated with pictures. It's been a while since I used Context so I want to download some basic manuals to refresh my memory and learn new things. On my Windows machine I can view/navigate and download manuals from the http://www.pragma-ade.nl/showcase.pdf page, but on my mac this doesn't work. In the Safari browser, nothing happens if I click on the "manuals" link. In Firefox, the showcase PDF is downloaded and I can open it. After allowing the file to go full screen, I get error messages for the links "there was an error opening this document/ the file cannot be found', execpt on the "quit" link ;-) Is there a simple thing I should change to make it work on the mac as well? Mojca, I saw your note on blog.miktex.org: If you still want to run ConTeXt on MikTeX while it has been removed, you may create a file texmfstart.bat in C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.7 \miktex\bin with the content: @echo off ruby "C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.7\scripts\context\ruby\texmfstart.rb" "%*" and extract www.pragma-ade.com/context/current/cont-tmf.zip into C: \Program Files\MiKTeX 2.7. Then, update filename database and generate formats, and everything should work again. Mojca I followed this advice, installed texmfstart.bat, unzipped cont- tmf.zip properly, updated the filename database, then got stuck. At the dos prompt: $ texmfstart --help Worked just fine. However, $ texmfstart texexec --help Did not work. What am I missing? If I recall I'll need to do: $ texmfstart texexec --make --all Or some such thing. \Asterisk

I was working on a document in which I wanted use a symbol that, acording to the Comprehensive LaTeX Symbol List, goes by the name of \Asterisk or \bigast (see p. 22). I saw, though, that this seems to be missing in ConTeXt. Might it be tucked away in some module, or is it just absent? If it's really not there, what would it take to add it? mplib errors

Dear all, I'm using ConTeXt MkIV on Debian with the following version: ConTeXt ver: 2008.05.21 15:21 MKIV fmt: 2008.8.4 int: english/english Everything seems to work well (I am able to run lua code, use otf font facilities, etc...) but the mplib mechanism. Indeed, running through the following simple file : \starttext \startMPcode path p ; p := fullcircle scaled 4cm ; fill p withcolor red ; fill p shifted(2cm,0cm) withcolor blue ; \stopMPcode \stoptext provokes the following logging : mplib : loading format: metafun.mp, name: /home/olivier/luatex-cache/context/6300afb4995fe38c77e9b86ed1ef1028/formats/cont-en-metafun.mem mplib : version mismatch: mp_parent_version <> 2008.05.21 15:21 mplib : making format: metafun.mp, name: /home/olivier/luatex-cache/context/6300afb4995fe38c77e9b86ed1ef1028/formats/cont-en-metafun.mem mplib : loading format: metafun.mp, name: /home/olivier/luatex-cache/context/6300afb4995fe38c77e9b86ed1ef1028/formats/cont-en-metafun.mem report >> mp terminal: (/usr/share/texmf/metapost/context/base/mp-tool.mp ! French punctuation : tests

Hello, It seem's that there's some changes on the « frenchpunctuation front » ! Thank's. I modified my test file and ad more precise rules to the wiki : http://wiki.contextgarden.net/frenchpunctuation I test it with luatex 0.29 and context 2008.09.21 * Strange bug : the space After the openning quote («) is twice bigger than the one before the closing one (»). Look at test 3 * Wolfgang change the wiki about the compose word, but using this (with the syntax compose||word) I get an endash (–) and not the normal sign (-). Test 5 * There should't be space between two sign. Test 2 * The space before the footnote sign is too big (it's clearer with othe fonts). Test 4 As usual, if you need more information, just ask ! ConTeXt to XML or HTML

Hello all, I have been looking for a way to convert from ConTeXt to HTML. I asked for God Google and also I have visited http://wiki.contextgarden.net, and read many times almost all articles. Maybe, I have not undestood the process very well. I could not figure out how to make such conversion yet. I saw many different forms of converting XML to ConTeXt, but I did not see nothing from typing in ConTeXt syntax and get a XML output file. The only program I have noticed that do that is tex4ht. This programs bases its conversion in both .tex and .dvi files. The result is not so exact as the desired. Is there another way to do that? Regards, Betoes

Hi, (1) --mode=modelist (1.1) Is there a limit to the number of modes in modelist ? (1.2) Is there a way to call the modelist and submit it to conditional testing within ConTeXt ? For example, to lookup (true/false) the presence of modes containing/starting with (an) alphannumeric string(s) ? (2) --modefile=file (2.1) What's the syntax of a modefile ? (2.2) How does ConTeXt handle a modefile ?
