Controlling figure placement?

Hi everyone, Is there a way that gives more control over figure placement within a columnset area? What I'd like to do is: - have a columnset area that covers a whole page - if possible, leave out headers and footers on that page (don't know how) - place an external figure on that page which is the same size as the whole page, 210 by 297mm. What I tried so far is: \definecolumnset[test][n=3,distance=15pt] \definecolumnsetspan[intro][n=2] \definecolumnsetarea[one][fixed][x=1,y=1,nx=3,ny=46,page=3,state=start] \definecolumnsetarea[two][fixed][x=1,y=1,nx=3,ny=46,page=5,state=start] \setupcolumnsetareatext[one][\setups{mypdf}] \setupcolumnsetareatext[two][\setups{myjpg}] \startsetups[mypdf]\externalfigure[01-x3.pdf]\stopsetups \startsetups[myjpg]\externalfigure[01.jpg]\stopsetups The pdf is placed on page 3, left aligned at the text body, top aligned at the text body. Both is not what I want in this case. The jpg is placed on page 5, vertically centered which is ok, left aligned at the text body which is also not what I want. Headers and footers are not a problem this time, since the figure obscures them. But in the past I've had images slightly smaller than the text body, in which case I'd like to wipe out headers and footers on that particular page... Any ideas anyone? Cheers Michael

The figure searching code gets confused if a file of the same basename (but in a different directory) has already been loaded. Here is a minimal min.tex to show what I mean: \starttext \setupexternalfigures[directory={1}] \placefigure[here][ch1fig]{should be 1/fig-1.pdf}{\externalfigure[fig-1.pdf]} \setupexternalfigures[directory={2}] \placefigure[here][ch2fig1]{should be 2/fig-1.pdf}{\externalfigure[fig-1.pdf]} \placefigure[here][ch2fig2]{should be 2/fig-2.pdf}{\externalfigure[fig-2.pdf]} \stoptext Probably it's a silly idea to use \setupexternalfigures within the body, but the same problem happens when using components (where each component's preamble has a similar line), where it makes more sense. Here is the directory structure (all the files are attached as a .tgz): min.tex 1/fig-1.pdf 2/fig-1.pdf 2/fig-2.pdf The final (third) figure is correctly found as 2/fig-2.pdf. But the second figure is reused from 1/fig-1.pdf because another fig-1.pdf has already been found: as 1/fig-1.pdf. Here is the relevant bit from the texexec output: <./1/fig-1.pdf> figures : dimensions of 1/fig-1.pdf loaded from figurefile itself (./min.tuo) (/home/sanjoy/texmf/tex/context/base/pdfr-ec.tex) floatblocks : 1 placed figures : figureobject fig-1.pdf is reused <===== The problem?? floatblocks : 2 placed <./2/fig-2.pdf> figures : dimensions of 2/fig-2.pdf loaded from figurefile itself floatblocks : 3 placed One part of ConTeXt does know the right figure path. A \getfiguredimensions[fig-1.pdf] after the second \placefigure will trigger a kpathsea search for 2/fig-1.pdf, which it finds. But it still loads 1/fig-1.pdf, which is why I've said 'sort of searched' in the subject line. -Sanjoy

texmfstart?

Since installing the last ConTeXt update I am aware of the message from texexec: warning : use 'texmfstart texexec' instead Good, I call: "texmfstart texexec --version" instead of "texexec --version" Result: -bash: texmfstart: command not found Is my system suddenly incomplete? I am using Mac OS X 10.4.6, the most recent development I would think. What happened and how can I get to the level of system support ConTeXt seems to expect of me? Hans van der Meer

Hello, I freshly switched to the ruby script and have now a problem: texmfstart texexec --pdf --pages=1:2 produces: No pages of output. texmfstart texexec --pdf however, works: Output written on tmp_.pdf (3 pages, 103204 bytes) Tobias

Textbackground overlapping (2)

Hello, Sorry, just another overlapping case I should have put in the preceding mail: when a float cuts the backgrounded stuff, the float is backgrounded too. Maybe harder to fix. corrupted .map files or MikTeX messing around?

Hello, a friend sent me some currupted PDF files (produced by ConTeXt) yesterday: all the fonts were missing in the document. He installed the latest ConTeXt (unzipped cont-tmf) on top of MikTeX (and I was able to reproduce his problem). In MikTeX the file fonts/map/dvipdfm/context/ec-public-lm.map was used instead of fonts/map/dvips/context/ec-lm.map ec-public-lm.map looks like: ec-lmb10 lm-ec lmb10 ec-lmbo10 lm-ec lmbo10 ec-lmbx10 lm-ec lmbx10 ec-lmbx12 lm-ec lmbx12 while the other one reads: ec-lmb10 LMRoman10-Demi "enclmec ReEncodeFont" <lm-ec.enc <lmb10.pfb ec-lmbo10 LMRoman10-DemiOblique "enclmec ReEncodeFont" <lm-ec.enc <lmbo10.pfb ec-lmbx10 LMRoman10-Bold "enclmec ReEncodeFont" <lm-ec.enc <lmbx10.pfb ec-lmbx12 LMRoman12-Bold "enclmec ReEncodeFont" <lm-ec.enc <lmbx12.pfb So pdfTeX reported many arrors (see one of the recent threads "new release"): Warning: pdfetex (file original-base.map): invalid entry for `fmvr8x': font fil e missing ... Whose fault is it? MikTeX's pdfTeX using the wrong path & files or were the map files [unintentionally] changed in order to support XeTeX perhaps? Mojca

Framedtext width

Hello, Is there a way (magical option) to have the framedtext width adapt to the environment width where it is put? I've tried width=broad, but it always uses the page \textwidth, even if the framedtext is in an item or something like this. There is the same behaviour for background too. An example: \setuplayout[middle] \setupcolors[state=start] \defineframedtext[mybox] [width=broad, frame=on, before=\blank, after=\blank] \starttext Here is an example: \startitemize[n] \item \input tufte \startmybox Some text in the box \stopmybox \input tufte \stopitemize \stoptext Regards, BG

Background placement

Hello, The placement of backgrounded text is sometimes unexpected: it forces a page break even if there's much room in the page to put the whole thing. Searching in the mailing list I've found one thread about the subject (http://archive.contextgarden.net/message/20051205.090518.90cc69d4.en.html) but playing with \setupinterlinespace as suggested doesn't help. The problem often occurs just after a heading starting at the top of a page (section, enumeration title). Dropped Caps with Numerals

Hello, I was wondering if there is a way to do dropped caps (in ConTeXt) but with numerals instead of letters. The standard DroppedCaps macro only seems to work with letters. Jeff Dodson
