Ever heard about security related items?
Do YOU want to wade through thousands of packages and check whether they
use xpdf code, zlib code, or whatever, and fix in all of them a severe
security bug?
If not, then learn how big distributions have to work. That is life.
I don't use the system lua because lua has been changed in luatex,
same with xetex and libice (and I am surprised where you got the
information that ubuntu did that, because ubuntu takes my packages from
Debian, and I never did that).
