Typefile with Chinese, Korean or Japanase text
I am writing a manual where I include code snippets with typefile. Some of the code snippets contain text in Japanese but don't appear in the PDF document as typefile seems to skip the Japanese characters MWE file cjk.asy ======== Label L; L = Label("\\begin{CJK}{UTF8}{gbsn}{\\CJKfamily{gbsn}여보세요 \\end{CJK}"); label(L); shipout(); main file ======= \starttext \typefile[C][]{cjk.asy} \stoptext

Assuming a font with the glyphs needed, this should work: \starttext \typefile{cjk.asy} \stoptext -- luigi
I wish it is that simple, but alas, I need to
to inform \typefile of the font as well,
possibly via setuptyping ?
The following works with texlive 2017 (pdflatex), meaning I have the fonts
installed.
I also ran
$ mtxrun --script font --reload
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\usepackage{CJKutf8}
\usepackage[english]{babel}

Here’s an example for Hebrew, I guess you can adapt it to Japanese: \definefallbackfamily[MyBodyFontFamily][sans][Arial Hebrew][range=0591-05F4] Greetlings, Hraban --- http://www.fiee.net http://wiki.contextgarden.net GPG Key ID 1C9B22FD

You are using a very old version of luatex and context. You need to update your distribution or install context standalone, which can be installed in parallel with texlive. http://wiki.contextgarden.net/ConTeXt_Standalone Aditya
I disagree, a version from 2016 is not very old. I have a lot of documents
using a ConText setup which works with this version
of luatex and context.
Last week I tried to use the latest beta with my documents and the beta was
unable to run my documents.
As it seems it is not backward compatible and I have no time at the moment
to debug or test.
So no, I cannot update at the moment.

Sorry, but I’m afraid that ConTeXt has beta releases almost every week (when not every day). Just in case it helps, I had to remove the luatex-cache directory and run "mtxrun --generate", before I could use the new fonts (cache reloading doesn’t work for me [even forcing it]). So no, I cannot update at the moment. It is not necessary to update. You can have multiple separate ConTeXt installations on a single system.

Thanks for all your input and help, but as said before I don't have the
time to upgrade and than to discover existing things don't work
resulting in a complete new thread to debug these existing things and/or
fix with a new beta installation.
But that is perhaps not my biggest concern with all these beta releases,
ConText is great and for the most part easy to use, I am more worried that
my existing ConText environment (setup) becomes broken, and/or resulting in
complete different PDF output.
I have no way of knowing, apart from visually inspecting a lot of pages of
PDF.
I thought including some code examples via \typefile (with a bit of text in
either Cyrillic, Chinese, Japanese or Korean)
could be achieved with a simple local font switch, or setting a regime or
via \setuptyping but not on a global level
with \definefontsynonym, definefontfallback etc.
My fix is to change the examples a bit and continue.
Again thanks for the help

Thanks for all your input and help, but as said before I don't have the time to upgrade and than to discover existing things don't work resulting in a complete new thread to debug these existing things and/or fix with a new beta installation.
But that is perhaps not my biggest concern with all these beta releases, ConText is great and for the most part easy to use, I am more worried that my existing ConText environment (setup) becomes broken, and/or resulting in complete different PDF output. I have no way of knowing, apart from visually inspecting a lot of pages of PDF.
I thought including some code examples via \typefile (with a bit of text in either Cyrillic, Chinese, Japanese or Korean) could be achieved with a simple local font switch, or setting a regime or via \setuptyping but not on a global level with \definefontsynonym, definefontfallback etc.
My fix is to change the examples a bit and continue. Again thanks for the help

I disagree, a version from 2016 is not very old. I have a lot of documents using a ConText setup which works with this version of luatex and context.
Last week I tried to use the latest beta with my documents and the beta was unable to run my documents. As it seems it is not backward compatible and I have no time at the moment to debug or test.
hm, normally updates are backwar dcompatible (apart from very beta features) ... what fails?

You’re using the command \cornflowerbluein in your setups (probably for the header or footer) to change the color of the page number but ConTeXt doesn’t create individual commands anymore for colors which are loaded from the color files. You can fix fix when you change the color setting to \color[cornflowerbluein]{\userpagenumber} or even better you set the color with \setupheader[color=cornflowerbluein] Wolfgang

This change in behavior was (partially) motivated by an amusing bug: \tan Alan
