Another test result using ConTeXt + XeTeX
Dear Mojca, As you told me, I changed "outputdriver" in tex.rb from xdvipdfmx to xdv2pdf and run it. There is no delay at all, but the output pdf lost color and mp stuffs. I think that it is better to use xdvipdfmx even though it took more times. During the test, I found a strange result. Here is the last part of the log file. %%%%%%%%%%% systems : no file 'cont-sys.tex', using 'cont-sys.rme' instead ) ) [7][8][9] <--- at this point, TeXniscope redisplay the pdf file in which backgroundscreen or backgroundcolor is well applied 81117 bytes written Output written on combimain.pdf (9 pages). Support for special stuff such as graphics and color takes time & effort for each driver separately. Support for metapost has been improved on the first day when XeTeX for linux came out, but support for xdv2pdf will most probably never be available unless one of the users would be willing to write it. (Also, more and more features are now only available for xdvipdfmx. It might be that support for xdv2pdf gets dropped completely one day - but I'm just speculating, I don't know anything about it.)

Sorry, I don't use that program. On Windows I use gsview and everywhere else I still manuall close & open the viewer. I have no idea why the long delay occurs. Mojca
