I will try to discuss that with somebody from the industry... can you try both with $>pdffonts <file1>.pdf $>pdffonts <file2>.pdf where file1 and file 2 are from http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4393365/embedded.png and http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4393365/subset.png and include the output here ?
