Sorry for my first post, I have misunderstood the problem...
I have checked your example with texexec --dvi + viewing it in xdvi: no
problem at all...
The complete log to see what happened:

xdvi does't complain about pk fonts at all... but I cannot say more
about xdvi since I don't use it...
I've just found that http://www.die.net/doc/linux/man/man1/t1mapper.1.html
=> xdvi can use t1 fonts ;)

Something's obviously missing in my install ... but what?
tia
i dunno where xdvi gets its info from, but it should use latin modern
instead of cmr but then, there are no mf sources of latin modern; can
xdvi use type 1 fonts?
(is there a reason why you use xdvi?)
