[NTG-pdftex] \pdffontobjnum assertion failed

Weird, i get

but when I comment the edef I get the same as you. So maybe some 
difference in the whole system setup triggeres the error.

(I don't use pdftex apart from an occasional test so my setup is a bit 
minimalistic but quite normal.)
