It might even refer to the thesis-related feature of automatic generated
expanded versions (when doing hz expansion) which was afaik removed
later for bitmaps.

Yes, unless in some appendix you want to preserve history ... but anyway
it really makes no sense to keep prc around (btw, I rmember lots of
disucssions also with people from adobe about these type 3 quality
issues, because at that time type 3 rendering was not that good. It were
the years that we started with different method for outputting rules
depending on size thresholds and what acrobat liked most).
