Hinting matters less on modern printers, but screen resolution is
still quite poor. Consider that the distance between your eyes and a
book or a computer screen is similar. Resolution of printers is
1200 dpi or more, manufacturers of computer screens still believe that
less than 100 dpi is good enough. Sure, you can zoom in, but I'd like
to see a whole page on screen with a reasonable resolution.

Latin Modern and TeX Gyre fonts are hinted, though not perfectly.
Jacko said that parts of the specs are ambiguous. You can try
yourself with Latin Modern Typewriter

  {\tt ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ}

and you'll see that not all glyphs have the same height (at least in
Adobe Reader). Hinting still needs some improvement but ATM Jacko
concentrates on math fonts. Since hinting has no impact on metrics,
it can be improved at a later time anyway.

Regards,
  Reinhard
