hm, no system file cache?
anyhow,
(1) use a small tex tree, throw everything out that you don't need (like
fonts and documentation and sources)
(2) run mktexlsr
(3) maybe tune your texmf.cnf file and get rid of funny trees (expand
$TEXMF and see what it contains)

(4) optimize your macros
(5) use 10 windows machines instead of the one aix -)
