My sincere thanks to all who responded;
I have reverted to an earlier version
which did not use \halign, and I can
once again process all images.  I think
that in retrospect, expecting PdfTeX to
buffer all 4500 images while it computed
the widths of the columns of an \halign
was probably expecting too much.
