BTW, is there a way to restore a primitive without having
a previously generated backup?

Example:

\def\show{something}% (e.g. ucsenc.def)

% Can something like
\expandafter\let\expandafter\show\pdfprimitive\show
% be used for restoring the meaning of \show?
% Or is the following the only way:
\def\show{\pdfprimitive\show}
