With \kn[ab]ccode=1000 a kern of 1em should be inserted.
(Here, it's 2.32pt:)

This bug is caused by missing of declaration of k inside the
function get_auto_kern, hence the global variable k is taken
with wrong type (eight_bits).

In fact, the kerning amount wraps at a kerning code of 256:
