OK, found it. File 
lmtx/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/fonts/mkiv/xits-math.lfg

is missing the lines

local common  = fonts.goodies.load("common-math.lfg")
local presets = common.mathematics.tweaks.presets

at the beginning of the file. However, math is typeset in Latin Modern. 
But that's for the math people to see...
