Enlarge the bounds of your picture – 

  beginfig(0);
    ahlength := 20;
    linejoin := mitered;
    drawarrow origin--(40,0) withpen pencircle scaled 5;

    setbounds currentpicture to boundingbox currentpicture enlarged 5mm;
  endfig;
