[NTG-context] Why is [left=(, right=)] ignored when using the aps btx rendering specification?

To answer my own question, it must be

\usebtxdefinitions[aps]

\setupbtxlist
   [aps]
   [alternative=b,
    after=,
    before=]

\definebtx
   [aps:cite:num]
   [left={(},
    right={)}]

\definebtx
   [aps:list:numbering]
   [aps:list]
   [left={(},
    right={)}]
