The next version will have:

\starttext

\setuphyphenation[method=traditional]

\hsize 1mm

aaaaabbbbb

\registerhyphenationexception[aaaaa-bbbbb]

\blank

aaaaabbbbb

\stoptext

(the functionality is already there, this wraps it in a macro)
