Adding \obeylines to \grabbufferdatadirect would also work

\unexpanded\def\grabbufferdatadirect % name start stop
  {\begingroup % (6)
+  \obeylines
   \buff_start_indeed\empty}

but I’m interested what’s the purpose of the fifth argument for \buff_start_indeed.
