For the problem at hand, maybe I'm naive, but here's my thoughts: would it be very hard to implement an alternative with layers? All we need for stepwise stuff to work would be
- reset userpagenumber to current value
- collect everything on slide in layer X, add layer X + 1 on top of this.
Or is this too simplistic?
