This needs to be stressed in the documentation.
Is this a parsing restriction, or is this a syntax design goal?

This also means that it is an error to attempt:
    \startitemize[1,nowhite,leftmargin=1cm,rightmargin=1cm]
        \item ...
    \stopitemize
