Thank you very much for your help.

I added:

\defineunicodecommand 255 {\lookaheaduchar}
\defineunicodecommand 32 {\lookaheaduchar}
\defineunicodecommand 37 {\lookaheaduchar}
\defineunicodecommand 38 {\lookaheaduchar}

to unic-cjk.tex and all works now as expected.
