Can this be enhanced to allow more than one alignment points?
For instance
 f(x)   = x²+b²  = g(x)      (1)
 h(x,y) = x²-5y² = g_2(x,y)  (2)
should be aligned at the each "=", currently - using \equalign(no) or 
\startalign - one can only align at one.
