indeed 'max' is the only candidate ... as \framed is pretty important 
and used all over the place adding extra values to check is not always 
possible without interference so it has to be experimental

wolfgang: in the next beta the width/height/offset/strut handling will 
be csname'd as in other places so you can check for issues then
